- La litiofilita és un mineral de la classe dels minerals fosfats, i dins d'aquesta pertany a l'anomenat "grup de la trifilita". Va ser descoberta l'any 1878 en mines de la localitat de , a l'estat de Connecticut (EUA), sent nomenada a partir de liti i del grec talls -amistat-, en al·lusió al seu contingut en liti. Un sinònim poc usat és el de litiolita. (ca)
- Lithiophilit ist ein eher selten vorkommendes Mineral aus der Mineralklasse der „Phosphate, Arsenate und Vanadate“ mit der chemischen Zusammensetzung LiMn[PO4] und damit chemisch gesehen ein Lithium-Mangan-Phosphat. Lithiophilit bildet allerdings eine lückenlose Mischkristallreihe mit Triphylin (LiFePO4), daher ist meist ein geringer Anteil von Mangan durch Eisen ersetzt (substituiert), wenn er mit diesem vergesellschaftet vorkommt. Die Mischformel wird entsprechend in verschiedenen Quellen mit Li(Mn2+,Fe2+)[PO4] angegeben. Lithiophilit kristallisiert im orthorhombischen Kristallsystem und entwickelt gelegentlich scharfkantige, kurz- bis langprismatische und flächenreiche Kristalle aus. Meist findet er sich jedoch in eher grobkristallinen oder körnigen bis derben Mineral-Aggregaten und Kluftfüllungen. In reiner Form ist Lithiophilit farblos und durchsichtig, im Durchlichtmikroskop auch hellgelb oder rosa. Durch vielfache Lichtbrechung aufgrund von Gitterbaufehlern oder polykristalliner Ausbildung kann er aber auch durchscheinend weiß sein und durch Fremdbeimengungen eine rötlichbraune, gelblichbraune bis honiggelbe oder lachsrosa, blaugraue bis graue Farbe annehmen. - Lithiophilite is a mineral containing the element lithium. It is lithium manganese(II) phosphate with chemical formula LiMnPO4. It occurs in pegmatites often associated with triphylite, the iron end member in a solid solution series. The mineral with intermediate composition is known as sicklerite and has the chemical formula Li(Mn,Fe)PO4). The name lithiophilite is derived from the Greek philos (φιλός) "friend," as lithiophilite is usually found with lithium. Lithiophylite is a resinous reddish to yellowish brown mineral crystallizing in the orthorhombic system often as slender prisms. It is usually associated with lepidolite, beryl, quartz, albite, amblygonite, and spodumene of pegmatitic origin. It rather readily weathers to a variety of secondary manganese phosphates and oxides. It is a late-stage mineral in some complex granite pegmatites. Members of the triphylite-lithiophilite series readily alter to secondary minerals. The type locality is the Branchville Quarry, Branchville, Fairfield County, Connecticut where it was first reported in 1878. The largest documented single crystal of lithiophilite was found in New Hampshire, US, measured 2.44×1.83×1.22 m3 and weighed about 20 tonnes. The synthetic form of triphylite, lithium iron phosphate, is a promising material for the production of lithium-ion batteries. (en)
