- Nuyorican – Kofferwort aus New York und (Puerto) Rican – ist die Bezeichnung für die Angehörigen der kulturellen Diaspora von Puerto Ricanern in und um New York City und für deren Nachkommen. Ihre Zahl wird heute mit rund 1,1 Millionen angegeben. Der Schriftsteller (1901–1974) gilt als Vater der nuyoricanischen Bewegung. Der puerto-ricanische Dichter, Journalist und politische Aktivist Clemente Soto Vélez ließ sich in den 1940er Jahren in New York nieder. International bekannter wurde die Personenbezeichnung, als 1975 in New York den um ihn entstandenen Literaturzirkel von seiner Wohnung in ein angemietetes Irish Pub verlegte und dieses „Nuyorican Poets Cafe“ genannt wurde. In diesem Jahr erschien von dort ausgehend auch Miguel Algarin, , und Buch Nuyorican Poetry. An Anthology of Puerto Rican Words and Feelings. Diese Kulturinstitution ist später in die Alphabet City umgezogen. Über die Jahre hinweg entstand auf diese Weise ein multiethnisches Kulturzentrum, das als Zentrum der Nuyorican-Kunstbewegung gilt. Die in Deutschland bekanntesten Schriftstellerinnen, die sich zu den Nuyoricans zählen, sind Giannina Braschi (Empire of Dreams) und Julia de Burgos (Yo misma fui mi ruta). Hinzu kommt auch der Poetry-Slammer Emanuel Xavier. Bei den Theater- und Filmschaffenden werden unter anderen René Marqués, Míriam Colón, Giannina Braschi, und Lin-Manuel Miranda genannt. Im Bereich der Musik zählen Kenny Dope (Masters at Work; Project „Nuyorican Soul“), Tito Puente (Oye como va), Ray Barretto, das Duo Richie Ray und Bobby Cruz, die Brüder Charlie und Eddie Palmieri, Willie Colón, Tony Touch, George Benson, Hilton Ruiz, La India und Joe Cuba zu den Nuyoricanern. Zu den nuyoricanischen Rappern gehören unter anderen Big Pun, Chino XL, Fat Joe, Jim Jones, Joell Ortiz, Kevin Gates, Lloyd Banks, N.O.R.E. und Thirstin Howl III. Der Nuyoricaner Nicky Cruz wurde als Anführer einer New Yorker Gang mit Namen The Mau-Maus bekannt, hat sich von dieser kriminellen Vergangenheit losgesagt und lebt heute als christlicher Prediger in Colorado. Des Weiteren sehen sich die Richter Edwin Torres und Sonia Sotomayor als Vertreter dieser Volksgruppe. Das Museum El Museo del Barrio hat einen seiner Schwerpunkte auf der Kultur der nuyoricanischen Bewegung. Laurie Collyer drehte 2000 den Dokumentarfilm „Nuyorican Dream“. Eine der in New York City gesprochenen Varianten des Puerto Rican English ist auch als bekannt. (de)

También se refiere a la diáspora puertorriqueña situada en y alrededor del estado de Nueva York, especialmente en la ciudad de Nueva York. El término también se puede usar para describir los puertorriqueños que viven en otras áreas del noreste de los Estados Unidos pero fuera del estado de Nueva York. A veces los «boricuas», los puertorriqueños nacidos en la isla, usan la palabra para diferenciar entre las personas descendidas de ellos y las personas descendidas de la gente de la raza puertorriqueña nacido fuera de la isla. - Nuyorican is a portmanteau of the terms "New York" and "Puerto Rican" and refers to the members or culture of the Puerto Ricans located in or around New York City, or of their descendants (especially those raised or currently living in the New York metropolitan area). This term is sometimes used for Puerto Ricans living in other areas in the Northeastern US Mainland outside New York State as well. The term is also used by Islander Puerto Ricans (Puerto Ricans from Puerto Rico) to differentiate those of Puerto Rican descent from the Puerto Rico-born. The term Nuyorican is also sometimes used to refer to the Spanish spoken by New York Puerto Ricans. An estimated 1,800,000 Nuyoricans are said to live in New York City, the largest Puerto Rican community outside Puerto Rico. Nuyoricans are not considered Puerto Ricans by some island Puerto Ricans due to cultural differences, which remains a point of controversy among both groups of Puerto Ricans. Nuyorican has a broad meaning; originally it meant Puerto Ricans, both island-born and mainland-born, living in New York, but many island-born Puerto Ricans use the term to describe assimilated Americans of Puerto Rican descent, living in any US state, or very assimilated or "Afro-Americanized" people of Puerto Rican ancestry, who largely lost touch with traditional Puerto Rican culture, and grew up culturally Afro-American, though still identify with Puerto Rico. Ethnic enclaves centered on Puerto Ricans include Spanish Harlem, Manhattan; Williamsburg, Brooklyn; Bushwick, Brooklyn; and the South Bronx. Although Florida has received some dispersal of the population, there has been a resurgence in Puerto Rican migration to New York and New Jersey, primarily for economic and cultural considerations, topped by another surge of arrivals after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in September 2017 – consequently, the New York City metropolitan area has witnessed a significant increase in its Nuyorican population, individuals in the region of Puerto Rican descent, increasing from 1,177,430 in 2010 to a Census-estimated 1,494,670 in 2016, maintaining New York's status by a significant margin as the most important cultural and demographic center for Puerto Ricans outside San Juan.
