- Pepsis grossa (Syn.: Pepsis formosa), zum Teil auch im Deutschen als Tarantulafalke bezeichnet, ist eine Wespenart aus der Familie der Wegwespen (Pompilidae), die Vogelspinnen jagt. - Pepsis grossa is a very large species of pepsine spider wasp from the southern part of North America, south to northern South America. It preys on tarantula spiders, giving rise to the name tarantula hawk for the wasps in the genus Pepsis and the related Hemipepsis. Only the females hunt, so only they are capable of delivering a sting, which is considered the second most painful of any insect sting; scoring 4.0 on the Schmidt sting pain index compared to the bullet ant's 4.0+. It is the state insect of New Mexico. The colour morphs are the xanthic orange-winged form and the melanic black winged form. In northern South America, a third form, known as "lygamorphic", has a dark base to the wings which have dark amber median patches and a pale tip. (en)
- Il falco delle tarantole (Fabricius, 1798), altrimenti noto come vespa falco delle tarantole, è un insetto appartenente alla famiglia Pompilidae. Preda tarantole, caratteristica che garantisce questo nome comune alla specie ed affini, appartenenti sia al genere Pepsis sia a quello Hemipepsis. Solamente le femmine della specie vanno a caccia, il che le rende, a differenza dei maschi, capaci di pungere. Possiedono la terza puntura più dolorosa secondo la scala di Schmidt, con un valore pari a 4.0 che è superato solo da quello della formica proiettile (4.0+) e da quello della vespa carnefice (4.0++). Le particolarità che consentono il riconoscimento della specie sono l'arancione acceso delle ali e certe volte il loro contorno nero. Nella parte settentrionale del Sud America, una forma conosciuta come ligamorfica presenta le ali inscurite alla base con chiazze color ambrato. (it)
