- Sheela Gowda (en kannada : ಶೀಲಾ ಗೌಡ ; née en 1957 à ) est une artiste contemporaine indienne qui vit et travaille à Bangalore. Gowda étudie la peinture à la Ken School of Art de Bangalore (Inde) (1979) puis étudie à l’université de Visva-Bharati (Santiniketan, Inde) en 1982 et obtient une maîtrise en peinture du Royal College of Art de Londres en 1986. Gowda élargi sa pratique à la sculpture et à l'installation en utilisant une diversité de matériaux tels que les cheveux, la bouse de vache, l'encens et la poudre de (pigment naturel le plus souvent disponible en rouge brillant). Elle est connue pour son travail « axé sur les processus », souvent inspiré par les expériences de travail quotidiennes de personnes marginalisées en Inde. Son travail est associé au dessin postminimaliste des associations rituelles. Ses premières huiles avec des filles songeuses dans la nature ont été influencées par son mentor K. G. Subramanyan, et plus tard par Nalini Malani vers une direction quelque peu expressionniste illustrant un chaos de la classe moyenne et des tensions minimisées par un érotisme grossier. Gowda studied painting at Ken School of Art, Bangalore, India (1979) pursued a postgraduate diploma at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, India (1982), and a MA in painting from the Royal College of Art in London in 1986. Trained as a painter Gowda expanded her practice into sculpture and installation employing a diversity of material like human hair, cow-dung, incense and kumkuma powder (a natural pigment most often available in brilliant red). She is known for her 'process-orientated' work, often inspired by the everyday labor experiences of marginalized people in India. Her work is associated with postminimalism drawing from ritualistic associations. Her early oils with pensive girls in nature were influenced by her mentor K. G. Subramanyan, and later ones by Nalini Malani towards a somewhat expressionistic direction depicting a middle class chaos and tensions underplayed by coarse eroticism. She is the recipient of the 2019 Maria Lassnig Prize. (en)
