- Le Nautilus (1931) est un navire submersible avec lequel Sir Hubert Wilkins, un scientifique-aventurier australien, se lança dans la course au pôle Nord en 1931. Il échoua à 800 km du pôle, mais son expédition fut cependant un succès sur le plan scientifique. Wilkins avait l’intention de parvenir au pôle Nord avec son navire en passant sous la banquise. Il devait retrouver au pôle Nord le dirigeable LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin affrété pour l'occasion par le magnat de la presse William Randolph Hearst. Hearst voulait publier quotidiennement dans ses journaux un compte-rendu envoyé par TSF depuis le sous-marin, et de plus diffuser le livre que Wilkins écrirait après la réussite de son expédition. Wilkins, qui avait atteint la célébrité en 1928 (il avait même été anobli par le roi d'Angleterre) après sa précédente traversée dans un petit avion monomoteur, de l'Alaska au Spitzberg, cherchait à unir ainsi la recherche scientifique (océanographie, géophysique, météorologie, cartographie et climatologie) à un effet publicitaire qui lui permettrait de réunir des crédits. Pour financer l'« expédition Nautilus », Lincoln Ellsworth (un riche mécène et explorateur polaire) fit don de 70 000 $, plus un prêt de 20 000 $ ; Hearst acheta 61 000 $ les droits à l'exclusivité pour le futur livre ; l'Institut océanographique de Woods Hole contribua pour 35 000 $ ; et Wilkins ajouta finalement 25 000 $ de ses fonds personnels provenant d'articles et de tournées de conférences. - USS O-12 (SS-73) was an O-class submarine of the United States Navy. These later O-boats, O-11 through O-16, were designed by Lake Torpedo Boat to different specifications than the earlier Electric Boat designs. They performed poorly as compared to the Electric Boat units, and are sometimes considered a separate class. The ship was launched in 1917 and entered service with the Navy in 1918 in the Panama Canal Zone. Taken out of service by the US Navy in 1924, the submarine was leased for use in Arctic exploration in 1930 sponsored by William Randolph Hearst. Renamed Nautilus, the submarine suffered significant damage while exploring the Arctic in 1931 and having recorded significant data while there, Hearst considered the venture a failure. Having returned to Norway to repair the damage, the submarine was returned to the United States Navy there, and they had the submarine towed down a fjord and scuttled in November 1931. (en)
