- Zanja Madre è l'acquedotto originale che portava l'acqua al Pueblo de Los Angeles (oggi metropoli di Los Angeles) dal Río Porciuncula (oggi chiamato fiume Los Angeles).L'opera originale era costituita da un canale aperto e fu completato dai lavoratori appena dopo un mese dalla fondazione del pueblo.Il sistema forniva acqua sia per uso domestico che per l'irrigazione dei campi ad ovest del villaggio.La disponibilità dell'acqua era ai tempi essenziale alla sopravvivenza ed allo sviluppo della comunità. Vennè dismesso ed abbandonato nel 1904. Il recente sviluppo edilizio lungo la linea Oro della Metropolitana di Los Angeles e vari progetti nel quartiere di Chinatown hanno portato alla riscoperta di quest'opera. Il grande interesse archeologico che si è creato ha favorito la sviluppo di progetti per renderne possibile la conservazione. (it)
- The Zanja Madre (Spanish: [ˈsaŋxa ˈmaðɾe], "Mother Trench") is the original aqueduct that brought water to the Pueblo de Los Angeles from the Río Porciúncula (Los Angeles River). The original open, earthen ditch, or zanja was completed by community laborers within a month of founding the pueblo. This water system was used for both domestic uses and irrigation to fields west of town. This availability of water was essential to the survival and growth of the community founded here. Brick conduits 3 to 3.5 feet (0.91 to 1.07 m) in diameter were built to improve the system after 1884. Eventually the system did not supply enough water to keep pace with population growth and irrigation demand. The system was abandoned by 1904 though portions were still used for storm water purposes. It was maintained by the Zanjero of Los Angeles. (en)
