Security is not just a feature. It’s our foundation.

Every design decision in 1Password begins with the safety and privacy of your data in mind.

Uncompromising commitment to security

Everything 1Password does is guided by principles that put your safety first. One of these principles is that only you should have the keys required to decrypt your data.

Privacy by design

Our dual-key model ensures that even we can't see exactly what you've saved in 1Password. And we can't use, lose, or abuse data that we don't have.

Encryption you can count on

We use proven, industry-recommended encryption algorithms to protect your data. Cryptography prevents anyone from seeing items they’re not supposed to – servers and people can be tricked, but cryptography cannot.

Made for people

You don’t have to be a security expert to use 1Password. It’s simple to use, despite being very complex. We want the secure thing to do to also be the easy thing.

Open about our design

We are open and explicit about the security design of our systems so that we can continually improve. We are regularly assessed by independent experts to scrutinize our security design to make sure our approach is rock solid.

What makes 1Password so secure

1Password security goes far beyond end-to-end encryption. We’ve taken additional steps to limit your exposure to threats outside of 1Password. Learn about our security model.

Unique dual-key encryption

Your account is secured with two powerful layers of protection: a password – which we never store and only you know – and a 128-bit encrypted Secret Key.

Protect data in transit

Secure Remote Password authenticates your account without sending your credentials over the Internet. This prevents anyone from stealing your data while it’s in transit.

Alerts you to security breaches

Watchtower alerts you to password breaches and other security problems with your saved items.

Only works in verified browsers

1Password only fills your details after it verifies that your browser has been signed by an identified developer.

Removes secrets from your clipboard

To prevent people or clipboard tools from learning your secrets, 1Password regularly removes item details from the clipboard.

Always requires your input

To protect your data from shoulder surfers and browser-based attacks, 1Password only displays or fills data when you tell it to.

Security with the proof to back it up

We adhere to industry standards and regulations so you can be sure your personal or company info is safe. And we protect against evolving threats with third-party testing and the industry’s largest bug bounty.

Industry standards

1Password is SOC 2 type 2 certified and complies with the most stringent industry standards for data confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Digital badge for AICPA SOC certification.

Open and verified

We collaborate with other security experts to make sure our security is rock solid, and we publish the results of independent audits on our website.
