The paper examines the way that problem of “transgressions between literature and music” (U. Weimann) corresponds to the modern epistemological, medial, and poetological ideas. The subject of the study is intermedial utopias. Using representative lyrical and prose German texts of the twentieth century as examples, I describe the ambivalent cultural situation of modernity, in which literature assimilates the abstract thinking of music and uses the tone painting beyond measure, while music is developing from “Wagnerian music as language” (T. Adorno) to the “absolute music” or performative acoustic phenomena of New Music. The objective of the study is to identify typical forms of intermedial verbal-musical utopia in late modern German literature. The work uses comparative, narratological, musicological methods, qualitative analysis of verse forms and thematic analysis of prose. During research I come to the conclusion that there are three ways of “literary music making”, i.e. talking about music (T. Mann, H. Hesse, M. Beyer, P. Süskind), imitating the musical language (as performed by avant-gardists) or as shown in the works by H. Wollschläger, T. Bernhard, E. Jelinek etc., who realize both models. In German modernism and postmodernism, this intermedial transfer is complicated by ethical and political collision, which has its origins in utopian romantic thinking, and which became increasingly acute during the Third Reich era (cf. Thomas Mann’s and Hans Wollschläger’s reconstruction of the devil’s pact fable). Music becomes a form of escape into the metaphysics, while music structure is chosen as an alternative to traditional lyrical or narrative forms. Thus, this collision is considered in the context of the modernist crisis and critique of language. The results of this study can be used in the formation of an alternative history of literature based not only on the evolution of verbal forms, but also on hybrid genres, namely, verbal-musical forms.

The paper examines the quasi-musical prose of Thomas Bernhard, that imitate the polyphonic writing of J.S. Bach. Intermedial transfer is considered in some aspects: as an representation of the Schopenhauer hierarchy of sense organs, in which hearing is coming to the fore; display, on the one hand, of Bernhard's thinking style, which leads to "the theoretical magic" (der Zauber des Theoretischen) and gestural rhetorization of discourse, on the other hand, the trends of modernist prose such as reduction of mimesis, flight to "absolute music" (C. Dahlhaus), metaization. The transfer of the fugue technique to poetics correlates with the rhetorical schematism of the Bach fugue, which is charac-terised by the "rigidity of the monoidea" (Yu. Kholopov). In the cultural-historical aspect, I interpret the imitation of the fugue as nostalgia for the baroque divine "circle", while

Стихотворения входят в сборники ранней лирики Бернхарда: “Auf der Erde und in der Hölle” (1957), “In hora mortis” (1958) и “Unter dem Eisen des Mondes” (1958).
The author offers her own translation of five poems of the Austrian modernist Thomas Bernhard (1931–1989) as well as the introduction to these texts. Presented poems are selected from the collections of the early poetry of Bernhard (“On Earth and in Hell”, 1957; “In Hora Mortis”, 1958; “Under the Iron of the Moon”, 1958). The paper offers provisional remarks to the lyrics of Bernhard, which had not previously been translated in Russia and did not become the subject of literary study. The author reconstructed the cultural-historical and also biographical context of Bernhard’s poetry, traced its main motifs and images, as well as the genesis of the interpreted texts from the European lyric tradition, for another thing the meaning of the lyrics in the evolution of Bernhard’s poetics. This translation was made as part of the Moscow publishing house “libra” project in collaboration with the German publishing house “Suhrkamp” and the result of which should be the first publication in Russia of the complete poems by Thomas Bernhard.

The paper deals with comparative analysis of Feodor Gladkov's novel “Cement” and the play “Cement” by Heiner Müller. Müller conceptualized the October revolution, Civil war, and industrialization as stages of death and revival of a collective body (the people). The cement factory becomes an ambivalent image of the dead past and live future. Characters are mythologized in the context of Homer's “Odyssey” and pre-Homeric cultural heroes. Müller represented the project of the Russian revolution in double optics of futurology versus archetypisation. The Greek myths are “melted” the same way as the individual, being transformed into new homo laborans.

This paper offers an analysis of a literary interpretation of the early and late thought of Wittgenstein by Austrian novelist Thomas Bernhard. The poetics of "Korrektur" (1975) is at the centre of discussion of obvious intertextual links with Wittgenstein.
Particular attention is paid to the spatial image of the ‘cone house’: it was constructed by the character of the novel and became an embodiment of his philosophical and architectural ideas. A comparative study of the Wittgenstein-Engelmann project of the house and the cone house in Bernhard’s novel makes it possible to highlight the aesthetic and philosophical analogies between them.
Bernhard’s philosophy of language represented by the protagonist Roithamer evolves from a research of the conditions of language reference to doubting the possibility language, and ultimately to searching ways to go beyond the language-world model in favour of a language-discourse model. The failure of the logic of the language-
world model is represented in the novel through the crash of the utopian architectural project (the construction of the cone house for the character’s sister). Thus, the novel presents a fictional analogy between two stages of Wittgenstein’s philosophy: the stage of the “Tractatus” and the stage of “Philosophical investigations,” the so-called Wittgenstein I and Wittgenstein II. The ideal of verbal exactness is impossible, both for the character as well as Wittgenstein I, a Cambridge scholar, a writer and an amateur architect. The discourse about the world is consequently represented as a never-ending correction and rewriting of “propositions” (Sätze) which can never be an exact “picture of reality” (Bild der Wirklichkeit). The key idea of the present paper is focused on defining the ambiguous identity of Bernhard’s intellectual hero and Wittgenstein, the literary character and the real philosopher.
The childhood as the subject of psychology, philosophy, and art is object of intensive study in the 20th century Austrian culture. Childhood is seen as the origin of personhood, its “code” that calls for interpretation. Psychoanalysis of Freud and Rank, fiction of Rilke, Musil, Kafka, Bernhard, Bachmann, and Handke are the landmarks in the development of the Austrian modernist text on childhood. The study of the conceptualization of childhood in the 20th century Austrian fiction being part of the modernist project of the independent personality generating autonomous art is of scholarly relevance. Rainer Maria Rilke imparts a confessional tone to the theme as he develops the neo‑romantic idea of childhood as the source of artistic personality. The child is conceptualized as the other of the adult whereas art is conceived to compensate the loss of the former. Experience of self-research is undertaken by Rilke in the novel about a fictional Danish poet Malte Laurids Brigge (Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge / “Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge”, 1910). The author first describes the past of the character, or his “lonely” childhood, and then turns to the historical past of the mankind and evangelical parable from which the narrator draws exemplae as arguments for his juxtaposition of the “mask” and the self. The fragmentariness or dissociation of the adult self becomes partly overcome by means of return to the childhood, a period when the narrator already gains experience of self-loss and self-discovery. Thus, for the modernist artist, the aesthetic project is inseparably interrelated with the “Sisyphean labor” of writing (Albert Camus), loss of the transcendental principles of poetic “labor,” and total experience of despair which, according to Kierkegaard, inspires self-reflection.

The review analyzes two bilingual publications of Herta Müller (b. 1953), Nobel Prizewinner in Literature (2009), a writer of Romanian origin, writing in German and Romanian. Her books “Im Haarknoten wohnt eine Dame” (2000, transl. from German by A. Prokopyev) and “Die blassen Herren mit den Mokkatassen” (2005, transl. from German by B. Shapiro) were published by “Literature without Borders” and included into the “Poetry Without Borders” series (Latvia, Ozolnieki, 2018). The genre and stylistic originality of the collage poems by Herta Müller is observed in their reference to the avant-garde experiments of the twentieth century. The review displays the author’s rethinking of the principle of andomness and the “childish” language of Dadaists, as well as developing of the surrealistic montage of everyday and dreamy. The transformation of German language becomes a means of experiencing and overcoming of personal and collective trauma (Nazism, socialist totalitarianism). The space is represented as a specific heterotopy, and the body reveals itself as the fragmented and estranged one. Apart from this the contamination of visual and verbal codes, as well as the stylistic, rhythmic and syntactic features of the Russian translation are demonstrated.
Key words: Herta Müller, “Die blassen Herren mit den Mokkatassen”, “Im Haarknoten wohnt eine Dame”, Boris Shapiro, Alyosha Prokopyev, otherness, estrangement, heterotopy, totalitarianism, trauma, German poetry of the 21th century, translation poetics.
