But this does not warranty that the power converted by the whole wind farm be a maximum due to the interaction between turbines (wake effect). Unlike the conventional operation, this paper proposes the individual selection of the operation point of each turbine so that the overall production of the wind farm is maximized. To reach that goal, the power produced by some upwind turbines is slightly reduced in order to increase the available aerodynamic power for the downwind turbines, which results in an increase of the overall wind farm energy extraction. The optimization is performed by means of a genetic algorithm that selects the optimal pitch angle and tip speed ratio of each individual wind turbine, in order to maximize the overall wind farm production.

The conclusions are that, with the current technology, cost and prices, the medium-size open cycle gas plants are not viable for a private investor, in spite of their total contribution to the global welfare being high. For this reason, it makes sense to design a system of subsidies or public helps to assure the correct development of this kind of power plants.

Meteorological datasets of 32 weather stations located over northern Venezuela are used in the development of the maps of three main regions in Venezuela: West, Central and East. Hourly observations of wind speed and direction at each anemometer mast, recorded during the period 2005-2007, have been analysed in order to define the statistical description of the wind resource in the studied area. This processed data along with information on elevation and roughness length is used to model the horizontal and vertical extrapolation of wind data and the estimation of the wind resource. An implementation of Mass-conservation Wind-Flow Model in OpenWind software is used to calculate the wind resource at each anemometer mast. A distance-squared interpolation method is proposed as the post-processing procedure and blending technique to create each map upon which a Venezuelan wind atlas is then built. Simulation results include two main wind-resource atlases obtained at 80 m height above ground: (i) a traditional map of mean wind speed for each direction; and (ii) a map of power density. Results show that the best wind-energy resources are located in the northern coastal area of Venezuela.

The optimization is done by controlling the pitch angle and the tip speed ratio of each one of the wind turbines in order to minimize the overall wake effect between wind turbines and, as a consequence, maximize the power produced by the facility. The optimization is performed by using a genetic algorithm with the aim of maximizing the power production. The production model considers aspects as the wind turbine power coefficient dependence on the pitch angle and the tip speed ratio as well as the influence of these variables on the wake effect performance.
