It is the story of Samba Diallo, his family and his people; the Diallobe. He lived a short life but a rich one nevertheless, rich in experience, thoughts and feelings, a life also full of conflicts. These conflicts eventually led to the abrupt end of his life. The book has generated various and sometimes opposing viewpoints and literary studies, one example is (Suffern, 2012 ); “The book manages to cover considerable ground in its 160 pages: the African diaspora; the collision between indigenous and colonial cultures; how religion and education can ensure imperialistic power; and finally, how individuals can become expendable experiments to their conquerors”. Another reader sees that the book “...addresses a critical contemporary issue—the collision of Islamic African values and Western culture.” However, it is not possible to look at all these issues in one short study. So, this article will give a general review of the book concentrating on the relationship of Samba Diallobe and his teacher at the Quranic school then discusses one of the important themes in the story; that of Death.

Despite this I argue that my own work and the work of Ahfad University for Women, in Sudan, where I am employed, represents the issues that scholars and institutions are addressing in terms of gender/women’s studies in the Global South and as such we “have made great strides in documenting and theorizing these social processes, leading to bold and insightful intellectual advances” (Hale, 2009, p. 136).

This paper will examine the possibility of using the simplified novels as supplementary materials with secondary school students from the teachers' perspectives. The study uses the interview as a tool to elicit data about the teachers' objectives and the techniques employed in teaching the simplified novels. Ten teachers are included in the sample: 4 females and 6 males. They all work in model secondary schools and teach the simplified novels to their students. It has been found that the main objective is to improve the students' reading skills with a moderate potential for supporting their oral/aural skills. Increasing students' motivation is viewed as an important objective, while non-language objectives have received no attention. As for the teaching techniques, loud reading is found to be dominant, with almost complete absence of silent and home reading. Discussion comes in the second place (5 teachers), while role play is used by only 3 teachers. The study recommends the use of more challenging materials as the teachers believe the simplified novels being used do not help increase their students' vocabulary. Moreover, the teachers' beliefs about loud reading and non-language objectives need reexamination.
