Un tema presente en Arquíloco en el Fr. 128 de la edición de West, la alternancia entre males y bienes, es tratado también y de modo muy próximo por dos autores modernos: san John Henry Newman en su novela Perder y ganar y Joni Mitchell en su poema cantado Ambas caras, ahora. Los tres autores abordan el tema desde una perspectiva íntima y personal, y están interesados en los efectos de esta alternancia en la esfera interior del hombre. Sin embargo, presentan diferencias sutiles en el planteamiento del tema, la forma y su resolución, si bien también en estos aspectos cabe señalar similitudes. Se intenta concluir del análisis y de la comparación en términos de estructura, motivación, intención y contenido con los dos testimonios modernos, más próximos al crítico actual, una definición profunda del tratamiento de Arquíloco.
A topic found in Archilochus in the Fr. 128 of West’s edition, the alternation of goods and misfortunes, is also found, and in a very similar way, in the work of two modern authors: saint John Henry Newman –he talks extensively about it in his novel Loss and Gain–, and Joni Mitchell, in her song Both Sides Now. On the one hand, the three authors take the topic from an intimal and a personal perspective and the three of them are interested in the effects that this alternation has in man’s inner self. On the other hand, there are subtle differences in the way they present the topic, the formal aspects of their work and the literary solutions they try, even if in these aspects they share some characteristics. From the discussion and a comparative study in terms of structure, motivation, purpose and content with the two modern works, less alien to our time, we try to conclude a deeper definition of the poem by Archilochus.
