Politicians, parties, and the public engage in social networks like Twitter or Facebook. This panel focuses on election campaigns and policy-making process in social media. How do politicians use social media during elections? How can we identify the public opinion of voters through the application of text-mining in social media? The US presidential election in 2016, possess big discussions and critics about the general social media usage in the context of election campaigns. Considering the case of Cambridge Analytica, information leakage, privacy issues, and trust also play an essential role as well. In respect of truthfulness, how can we encourage more robust and wide-reaching sharing of trustworthy material, such as scholarly research? Besides politicians, the public comes more and more into the focus as a political stakeholder in social media. How does the public engage in policy-making? Electronic-petitioning serves as a medium to mobilize support and interest of the public. The panel provides the possibility for speaker and participants to exchange both, information as well as methodological approaches of political communication in social media.

Since iSchools include faculty from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, such effective communication is especially important for collaborative interaction. The growth of knowledge depends on potential strategies for sharing ideas, concepts, methods, vocabularies, and so on. This article suggests that semiotics may be the strategy that holds the most promise for success.

We discuss the case of We the People, a US national experiment in the use of social media technology to enable users to propose and solicit support for policy suggestions to the White House. We apply Baumgartner and Jones's work on agenda setting and punctuated equilibrium, which suggests that policy issues may lie dormant for periods of time until some event triggers attention from the media, interest groups, and elected representatives. In the case study presented, we focus on 21 petitions initiated during the week after the Sandy Hook shooting (14–21 December 2012) in opposition to gun control or in support of policy proposals that are alternatives to gun control, which we view as mobilized efforts to maintain stability and equilibrium in a policy system threatening to change. Using market basket analysis and social ...

This Internet-based tool enables users to petition the Obama Administration and solicit support for policy suggestions. Using WtP petition data, we focused on 33 petitions that were initiated the week after the Sandy Hook shooting (December 14-21, 2012) involving gun control and collectively received a response from President Obama. We apply Baumgartner and Jones's (1993) work on agenda setting and punctuated equilibrium, which suggests that policy issues may lie dormant until a " focusing event " triggers the attention from political figures, interest groups, and the media. Using some techniques from market basket analysis and social network analysis we found evidence of the mobilization of online c...

This makes it very difficult for the systems to disambiguate their queries and identify potentially relevant documents, resulting in sub-optimal retrieval performance. We hypothesize that users will provide better and more useful descriptions of their information problems if they are able to speak to the system and easily indicate through speech and gesture those documents and aspects of documents which they find useful, and not useful. In this paper, a spoken interface is described, and a planned wizard of oz study will be introduced.

With 43 student chapters around the world, ASIS&T has a good foundation of student support; having an active chapter at each university with studies in information science would further strengthen the Association. An early 2014 survey elicited responses from 38 current or past students, 28 of whom had a local ASIS&T student chapter with 23 being members. Just over half had attended an ASIS&T Annual Meeting. Respondents noted the value of networking within the Association and special interest groups and the assistance available for career and research goals. They also observed drawbacks including the cost of Annual Meeting attendance and feeling lost at the large conference. Students are drawn by the opportunities for involvement and networking. Among the numerous suggestions offered to strengthen and enrich the student experience were leadership training, practical skill development and improved communications.

This, in turn, makes their information seeking process even more challenging. As an important research area in the field of information science and human computer interaction, human information seeking behavior has been researched for decades. In this entry, the authors focus on human information seeking behaviors in terms of their definition, the interactive, cognitive, contextual, and task aspects, and the intellectual knowledge and history. Since information seeking behaviors are a facet of the relatively new field of cyber behaviors, the chapter also discusses cyber behaviors in information seeking and the future research directions.
