The central question examined in this article is whether, and to what extent, the Chinese family is undergoing a Western process of modernization and an associated reduction in the previously very high rate of parent-adult child co-residence. Using recent national survey data, this study reveals that only two decades into the 21st century, co-residence in China is as low as, if not lower than, that in the West, and instead, living apart but in proximity in the same city/county has replaced co-residence as the most prevalent living arrangement. We show that the shift to proximity is a result of the negotiations between traditional and modernizing tendencies, and is further enabled by significantly improved housing and household financial conditions.

The housing source and housing tenure of urban household have been changed greatly with the housing reform, from the pure renting of public housing to various sources and complex tenure structure, and some urban households even begin to have a second house. Geographical factors affect the accessibility of multiple home ownership. This paper studies the spatial pattern of multiple home owners with CGSS data in 2005, and finds that the proportion of multiple home owners in municipalities and provincial capitals is lower than that in other cities, with cities with more population lower than smaller cities, first and second class cities lower than third and fourth class cities. When urban residents are divided into local citizens, urban migrants without local urban registration, and rural migrants without local urban registration, the spatial pattern of multiple home ownersh...

Minority communities, however, suffered disproportionally high percentage of infection and mortality rates, a disturbing phenomenon that deserves scrutiny. Adopting a spatial and temporal perspective, this study aims to investigate health disparities in this pandemic by focusing on mobility in the city. Considering both public transit and the lockdown policy essential factors that impact infection and mortality, this study introduced a measure indicating mobility-restricted transit as the spatial factor. Additional factors include ethnic minorities based on their nativity and three categories of social vulnerability: socioeconomic status, household composition, and housing type. This study selects eight phases, each of which consists of 2 weeks to derive infection and mortality rates to investigate the impacts of those...

We find that both market mechanisms and institutional forces affect households' tenure choice in urban China. While some socioeconomic factors such as age, household size, household income and housing price have similar effects on tenure choice as in the West, others such as the number of workers and marital status have rather different effects. In addition, factors characterising institutional relationships among the state, work units and households, such as hukou, job rank and work unit rank, still play important roles in tenure choice.

Four main challenges are briefly discussed in this chapter, including the new domestic and international context, new urban development model, migrants’ inclusion and affordable housing for the growing and aging urban population, and urban sustainability environmentally and socioeconomically. Related chapters are summarized and contributions and limitations of this book are discussed at the end.
