Social work is a profession that supports vulnerable people in need, including those experiencing war. A social worker is a professional who “can help translate policy into workable projects, help design and evaluate direct services and projects, and work towards community capacity building”. The influx of refugees from the Ukraine war has created unprecedented challenges for social workers. This research was conducted between 6 and 20 July 2022 using the computerassisted web interviewing (CAWI) technique in six voivodships in Poland among social workers employed in local social welfare institutions where most war refugees were given shelter. Most respondents were satisfied with the help provided to refugees in their municipalities. Grassroots initiatives for refugees were particularly appreciated. Most social welfare institutions for refugees from Ukraine offered social counselling as well as material and financial assistance. Integration and social activation services were provided much less frequently. The research shows the scope of cross-sectoral cooperation. The key partners helping refugees from Ukraine, in addition to schools, were ordinary citizens, creating various informal insurance groups.

In June 2022, in the Gułtów Palace and Park Complex, property of the Adama Mickiewicz University in Poznań, during a two-day meeting, academics and experts from all over Poland discussed the current status and challenges that are important for social work in the context of its professionalization and academic potential. As part of the seminar, five debates were held, each consisting of a substantive introduction and discussion. The authors of this report presented their opinions, conclusions, and recommendations. The participants agreed that such discussions should be a cyclical event because they integrate around important issues having consequences not only for the development of social work but also for effectively dealing with critical soc...

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, nursing homes had particularly high infection rates. In this context, it is important to ask about the experiences of the care workers working in these institutions. Methods: This research was conducted using the computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) technique in five provinces in Poland. The field research was carried out in April 2021. The research sample included, among others, nurses, care workers, therapists, social workers and the management staff of institutions whose representatives worked during the COVID-19 pandemic. Respondents were asked to assess the care provided to residents. Results: It turned out that the vast majority of respondents positively assessed the fulfillment of the basic living needs of residents and the availability of care. The assessment of the organization of residents’ leisure time, the fu...

It takes as its point of departure two models of advocacy structuring multiple types of activity in this field, ranging from work with particular individuals to political engagement at the macro level. The next part offers a discussion of the results of a quantitative study (CAWI and CATI interviews) conducted among social workers from local social welfare centres in the Wielkopolska region. In the light of analysis of the obtained data, the practice of advocacy in social work emerges as one focused on providing direct assistance in the form of financial and non-financial benefits. The declared level of acceptance to facilitating collective action and macro practice of social work was lower. The results also reveal the attitudes of social workers to social rights and social problems.

Firstly, we have a discourse on social campaigns. In my opinion, social campaigns are an institutional discourse, in which a planned statement strives for the legitimization of particular meanings. Secondly, the paper discusses the social world, which refers to those who have directly experienced working as volunteers. In this article, I point out the differences and similarities in representations of voluntary work, which are created by these two discourses. Both representations present volunteers as altruistic people, who are focused on helping people. The main difference concerns the meaning of volunteering. On the one hand, we have a discourse on social campaigns, in which the message is more individualized. On the other hand, volunteers stress the systemic importance of voluntary work as activities that are pragmatic and functional for societies or events. The article is based on data of fifty-nine IDI (in-depth ...

The article is based on the concept of the Other presented by Zygmunt Bauman. The author analyzes three basic strategies: strategy of cultural body, strategy of heterotopia and strategy of odour which dominate in the manner in which smokers are separated. Through body, place and smell modern culture defines smokers as an Other which differs from the socially accepted norms and is continually and increasingly excluded from mainstream society.
