Stanisława Moniuszki w Gdańsku niewielki księgozbiór złożony z 19 utworów muzycznych, należący do Friedricha Wilhelma Jünckego (1842-1897).

In the face of limited knowledge about the life of this merchant from Gdańsk, and then from Sopot, the discovery that, apart from numismatic items and so-called Gdansk door, he also collected musical items was a big surprise for the employees of the Art Inkubator, an institution that, since 2019, has been taking care of, e.g. Jüncke’s villa and cherishes the memory of the former owner of the building. The musical and bibliological characteristics of the music prints showed that Jüncke gathered them for collecting rather than for utilitarian purposes. The provenance entries found in two prints prove that Jüncke was not their first owner. In addition, the entries found in the next five prints may prove that after Jüncke’s death some items were in the possession of the Gdańsk NSDAP, and after the war they ended up in the aMuz Library. Undoubtedly, finding this small book collection contributes to supplementing the information about Jüncke and – indirectly – to expanding knowledge about the musical culture of Gdańsk in the period 1939–1945.

One of them is a collection of notes used in artistic work and maybe in vocal teaching by the outstanding Polish singer Kazimierz Czekotowski. The article describes the contents of the collection, particularly the items concerning composers and publishers. The most interesting are hand-written dedications, because, in many cases, it’s the only one document confirming artistic contacts between a composer and a performer. It also enables determining the date of composing and the first performance of the work or – indirectly – help identify publication dates. Secondly, it is drawn up a list of publishers present in these collection, which is a contribution to the characteristics of the situation of the Polish music publishing market… (time limits due to publication dates of the items from the Czekotowski collection).

Circulating music prints reach various recipients at home and abroad, while the production and distribution of such publications depend mainly on the needs and tastes of consumers. Musical instruments provided by the music industry also find their way to many customers. This industry is an integral part of culture as it provides the material basis for creating and performing music. Musical culture emerges ‘in movement’: through encounters and the exchange of people, compositions, ideas, and physical goods. It has its own dynamics and channels of expansion; it relies on extensive and ever changing networks on personal, professional, institutional, and commercial levels. This musical exchange happens across state borders; it is not blocked by geography or politics, although both may affect it to an extent. The present collective work Polsko-rosyjskie spotkania w przestrzeni kultury muzycznej (XIX wiek i początek XX stulecia) [Polish-Russian Encounters in the Space of Musical Culture: The 19th and Early 20th Centuries] attempts to show this exchange through the testimony of historical sources: autographs, music prints, records of social life (concert programmes), and press materials. The main focus of the articles is on the presence of Polish music and Polish musicians in Russian culture; however, there is also a discussion of the opposite perspective, of Russian music and musicians in Polish culture.

It was dictated mainly by practical reasons: the series could be ended at any time, and it was easier to include thematically the works published in the series. This form of publishing induced a potential buyer to complete the entire series of publications. Identifying the group of the recipients of the music prints was one of the marketing measures that were most simply reflected in the meaningful titles (names) of the series. In this article, the author shows that this phenomenon was particularly noticeable in Warsaw music publications published in the years 1875-1918; publishing sheet music in series fully corresponded to the music editors’ focus not only on dissemination, but – thanks to the knowledge of consumers' needs – also on the commercialization of music.

These legacies belonged primarily to the musicians who, after World War II, moved to the Coast, mainly from Warsaw. The purpose of the discussion is to prove that the music prints they brought were a canon of music literature for promoting Polish culture and music education both in Warsaw in 1875-1918 and in post-war Gdańsk. Due to the weak publishing situation in Tricity, the musicians were forced to use their own collections, which properties prove that these prints were used primarily by artists to promote Polish music, to train new generations of professional musicians, and thus to develop Polish higher music education.

The culture immediately gained the status of high culture due to dynamically developing music education, which had not collapsed even in the face of the outbreak of World War II. Despite excellent cultural conditions, musical activity with regard to publishing sheet music was at the other extreme. Basic Polish music literature was not available in the library of the State High School of Music (established in 1947), therefore, in order to study the students used the sheet music gathered by the lecturers, who would purchase them in Warsaw antiquarian bookshops, selecting the best publications. At present their history constitutes valuable material for provenance and musicological research, mainly due to the proprietary marks and personal notes in the documents.Out of 371 titles of Warsaw ...
