Through a selfreflexive reading of the memoir and newspaper accounts from this period, this article explores how a narrative transgender subjectivity emerges from the appropriation and negotiation of tropes, figures and discourses that make this subjectivity intelligible. Through the use of the medium of photography, which exposed and spectacularised gender nonconformity, Kenan was able to performatively embody and visually present a masculine gender identity. However, the space Kenan created for narrative and visual self-constitution was conditioned by their privileges based on class, urban-rural hierarchy, ethnicity and normative sexual dimorphism. To understand the diverse and conflicted genealogies of Turkey’s feminism(s), we argue, it is necessary to critically engage with the notion of the ‘barren period.’ In the 1950s, ‘the discourse of indebtedness’ to Atatürk and the gender project of Kemalism became hegemonic through production of collective memory in which the women’s movement participated. Haunted by the radical struggles of Ottoman and early Republican feminists for equality, the mid-twentieth century women’s movement selectively remembered them in shaping this memory. Beginning in the second half of the 1960s, younger generations of women began to question women’s movement’s agendas and actions. This article focuses on two issues where the intergenerational conflict was particularly evident: (Anti-)veiling and (anti-)communism. These themes reveal that the discourse of indebted...

tutar. Yirminci yüzyıl Türkiyesi’nde dile getirilmesi güç homoerotik arzulara ve
cinsiyet normlarının dışına düşen yaşantılara bolca yer veren İstanbul Ansiklopedisi
arşivini araştırmacılar, “queer hisler arşivi” olarak ele almaktadır. Bu yazıda, İstanbul
Ansiklopedisi’nin queer bir arşiv inşa ederken aynı zamanda arşiv kavramına içkin bazı
çelişkileri abartıp dramatize ederek arşivi queerleştirdiği öne sürülmektedir. Kadir Has

Yazı Donna Haraway'in Derrida eleştirisinden ilham alarak insan/hayvan ayrımının ötesinde türlerle kurulacak yeni yoldaşlık ilişkilerinin ipuçlarını aramayı amaçlamaktadır.

In this essay, we examine the period after 1935, when the TKB (Turkish Women's Union) was forced to dissolve itself, and seek to answer the following questions: How did the TKB, which was re-established in 1949, some twenty years after the suppression of the feminist struggle for political rights, position itself in relation to the state, how did it relate to its past, where did it place itself in the history of women's struggle, what kind of language and policies did it produce on behalf of women, and how did it relate to different groups of women?

The period from 1935 to 1980s-when " second wave " feminism emerged-is usually discussed in one or two paragraphs and characterized with compromise, defeat and silence. Although cannot be characterized as a period of feminist heroism, the 1950s has been a lively period for women's movement. With the relative democratization brought by the multi-party system, women started to form new associations and struggled for their rights although in more compromising ways. They struggled for more representation at the parliamentarian level, struggled for the rights of working women, raised their voices against discrimination and violence. While doing these they reproduced a discourse of " true womanhood " who would be a hardworking patriotic mother. The paper deals with the question of what we seek in feminist history. If we stop looking for heroic grandmothers, we will start seeing the ruptures as well as continuities of women's movements in different periods whether they are regarded as feminist waves or periods of silence. We aim to reconsider the 1950s with this perspective.

In order to understand the significance of different uses of video in the city, first the visual terrain of the city video is acting in will be explored around the concepts of spectacle and surveillance. After that the relation of the visual technologies of
photography and cinema with the modern city will be analysed. Although these two are not taken as predecessors of video, some of their uses resemble to that of video’s. Video is a technology that is used in different contexts. In the scope of this thesis, video art, video activism and participatory uses of video will be dealt with in detail. Video is also defined as a tactic using de Certeau’s terminology.
Process and practice are important in studying video’s uses, so this thesis will also
be informed by different practices of three different video groups. Karahaber in
Ankara, PTTL in Brussels and Spectacle in London have developed different
practices that are defined by their local conditions as well as aspirations of the
group members. No matter how locally defined and specific they are, these
practices can be assembled together under certain topics. Documenting,
reconstruction, monitoring the monitors, having a voice, encounter(s) and
transformation are such topics defined in this thesis.
The main argument of the thesis is that video is a tool that is capable of creating
local narratives that can bring about the differential space Henri Lefebvre has
situated against the abstract space of capitalism. The former will not emerge with an overnight collapse of the latter, but rather will infiltrate through the cracks left open. Video is one medium that can create more cracks.
aimed to mobilize the masses. In addition to this, music has functioned as a field where the collective identity of the movement as well as the Kurdish identity is
constructed. As the Kurdish movement did not possess the institutional and ideological apparatuses of the national state in its national identity construction process, music started to play an important role. Through modernization of Kurdish folk music, the identity is constructed as a modern and authentic one. In addition, with the political lyrics of the songs, the national elements such as common language, common history and the imagined territory are constructed, popularized, and canonized. Despite their counter-hegemonic position, koms have articulated elements of the hegemonic discourses as well.
