The conditions these benefits depend on will subsequently be presented: training workshop leaders, scientific choices and educational and philosophical choices. Following these observations, the need to change
current practice surrounding science workshops will be elaborated on. Consequently, a circular structure between the scientific community and civil society supervised by the science educator will be proposed. This structure will enable mutual understanding and enrichment involving not only civil society but also the scientific community through the science educator. To do this, the beginnings of a solution are proposed based upon a digital platform, which could be envisaged at a French level or an international level.

Since February 2010, the issue of Users of Metal Detectors (UMDs) has been a hot topic in France.... more Since February 2010, the issue of Users of Metal Detectors (UMDs) has been a hot topic in France. If the issue unleashed passions, although this has not really been reflected in the French media, a question is implicitly linked to the subject: apart from preventing the very real danger of new archaeological sites being destroyed, will this spell the end of amateur archaeology? With the creation of the National Archaeological Excavations Association (INRAP) in 1973, which became a public service called the National Institute for Preventative Archaeological Research in 2002, coupled with the growth of private companies in archaeology, the professionalisation of French archaeology has significantly changed the relationship between this profession and amateur archaeologists. This evolution now underlines the ambiguous position of the French state, which, on the one hand, supports the contributions of civil society to the profession, yet on the other hand, is still very suspicious about organisations that are not directly dependent upon the state. After a quick review of relevant legislation and the evolution of French archaeology, we will present a profile of the UMDs, their impact on archaeology and the reactions to this subject by professionals as well as the state, communities and citizens. Then, we will broaden the issue by asking if UMDs represent the only human danger for archaeology. Finally, we will discuss potential solutions to the problem of looting while still encouraging the involvement and recognition of amateur archaeologists and citizens committed to the protection of French heritage.

The problem of analysing archaeological documents had already arisen with significant consequences on the final result, in particular when only the foundations of the structure had been found. Instead of an argued reconstruction, the reconstruction was an elevated projection of the plan drawn up by the excavator, the superstructure thus being merely a product of his imagination. Since then, the use of information technology has not changed the situation at all: the final document still lacks scientific value; the superstructure is still a product of the imagination. However, the authors point out, it could be obtained scientifically for any remains using the convergence of multiple indicators pointing in the same direction and towards the same conclusion.

Like any scientific discipline, the goal of archaeology is to produce knowledge based on data. So... more Like any scientific discipline, the goal of archaeology is to produce knowledge based on data. So how can archaeology already benefit society? Aside from a specialized community publishing for itself, what are those benefits to society?
In fact, everyone uses the results of archaeology, but without knowing it. Like Mr. Jourdain in Molière’s comédie-ballet, everyone uses archaeology from school to adulthood in our interactions with others without realizing that it is thanks to archaeology that we can do so. From school to diplomatic relations, from the economy to the protection of cultural heritage, we will show how much archaeology is present in our daily life.
This reality is not sufficiently recognized inside our archaeological community, which explains why we still wonder about our place in society. This is why this issue of the applications of archaeology, whether beneficial or harmful, represents a challenge for those who seek to make archaeology even more useful to society. How do we communicate this reality to archaeologists and policy-makers within and beyond the heritage sector? How can we encourage new forms of public service? Launched in March 2018 with a first corpus of letters from the 19th century, the program is aimed at individuals interested in archaeology and at archaeologists, both students and researchers as well as enthusiasts. Its objective is to encourage them to digitize and then publish their historical sources on Wikimedia via the Open Source tools. In this way, the various documents will be accessible to the greatest number of people all over the world and research on them will be encouraged.
With this first experience, we hope to encourage private individuals to enhance their personal collections, archaeology students to contribute to the work of referencing, and researchers to take note of the information on display and to study them. The goal is to complete the current project on Anatole de Barthélémy's archives and to initiate others, all archaeological periods combined.
The communication will come back on the genesis of the program and will present the study in progress in order to attract attention about how Wikimedia projects can help to design citizen science research program without important funds.

EAA2020 - Prehistory, Archaeology and Archaeologists as Reflected in School Books and Curricula
Confusion between paleontology and archaeology is a common error in primary and high school teach... more Confusion between paleontology and archaeology is a common error in primary and high school teaching in France, but it is not the only difficulty to overcome at school and in school books. Wrong logical chronology, prehistorical cultures technicity considered as undeveloped, archaeology considered only from the excavation point of view, aso., the teaching of prehistoric and historic times in France generates numerous mixes between disciplines and periods as well as false ideas (linear evolution, eurocentric vision, aso.) among children as well as teachers.
Using case studies, we will show what are the difficulties to overcome for a respectful prehistoric times teaching dealing with our true current knowledge of periods and disciplines. We will, also, present some experiments done with school student from 7 to 8 years old (CE1-CE2) at primary schools in Saint-Denis. In conclusion, other possibilities will be present to change the prehistory teaching in order to distinguish cultural prehistoric teaching and natural prehistoric teaching, or how archaeology, associated to events or organizations linked to science workshops, would provide a better vision of what prehistory and archaeology are.

Archaeology is amongst the scientific disciplines most frequently calling upon a multitude of other disciplines, both scientific ones and crafts. In this way, art history or iconological approach involving identification, description and image comprehension give new informations to archaeology. This case shows interdisciplinarity as producer of an actual new form of knowledge.
This presentation will present A. why iconology and archaeology are differents disciplines because their topics are not the same : images in the first case and techniques in the second case, B. how an interdisciplinarity approach is useful to better understand an archaeological topic thanks to an iconological approach dealing with: - Canine farming techniques in pre-pharaonic times in Egypt from the 5th millennium BCE and suidae farming in the Middle-East during the 1st millennium BCE, - Technicians' (farmers') movement between the Middle-East and Egypt during the 5th millennium BCE.

Archaeology amongst the scientific disciplines most frequently calling upon a multitude of other disciplines, both scientific ones and crafts. In this way, zoology has enabled archaeology to consider skeletal remains through a different light in archaeozoology; botany has enabled the use of plants and pollen in analyses; and experimental testing has improved through contact with various craftspeople.
The same interdisciplinarity has been applied to images with the iconological approach. This has created an approach involving identification using biological, geographical and chronological criteria, integration of dimensions such as ethology (animal behavior) into image comprehension, and classical and logical description.
This presentation shows how iconology can be useful to archaeology through examples covering: • Canine farming techniques in pre-pharaonic times in Egypt from the 5th millennium BCE and suidae farming in the Middle-East during the 1st millennium BCE. • Technicians’ (farmers’) movement between the Middle-East and Egypt during the 5th millennium BCE. •The use of animals by political and religious powers and communities of crafts people in Syria during the Bronze Age using feline and bovine analysis

The project was born to put an end to the endless work of copying data and parallels in previously published studies, while so many new finds keep on emerging from rescue excavations as well as from older museum collections. While the huge amount of knowledge about small finds is scattered in uncountable publications printed in several european countries, it seems unreasonable for a single scholar to have them all in mind. Yet this ambition can be adopted by a community, if specialists from various countries succeed in sharing a common tool. Artefacts would like to be this tool, a space of shared knowledge and a link between specialists from all countries.
Now available in 5 languages, Artefacts offers a classification system organized with typological codes and periods; individual type pages can also be found through site name, museum or bibliography. Most of the processed data comes from publications, but the database also welcomes lists and images from museums, as well as from recent unpublished excavations. Links are given, when available, towards online publications, museum pages or other databases, such as the British PAS (Portable Antiquities Scheme). The wish to arouse a specialists community is now achieved by an interactive forum, where all sorts of questions can be discussed within connected users.

They are a formal tool through which interest groups can neutrally communicate with political parties and voters during upcoming elections. The process is as follows: a short specific catalogue of relevant questions is formulated and sent to the parties. The politicians are requested to reveal how they intend to act – e.g. regarding legislation or financing of archaeology and heritage protection – during the next legislative period. The answers of the parties are collected and published in order to provide voters interested in archaeology with criteria for their decision.

We would like to look at three main objectives: - to review the practicalities of operating an EAA Working Group. What is the collective experience? - to consider the overlaps in working group aims and endeavour, thereby identifying common themes - to draft a statement of intent on future collaborative working, with recommendations to the EAA Executive Board.

At its Annual Conferences archaeologists from all over Europe and beyond meet, present their research and discuss professional issues. As much as words and writing can change the minds of people, the results remain theoretical and intellectual, but do have very little direct impact on the situation of archaeology and archaeologists. Is that the successful path to follow or should the EAA think about developing a political strategy on a European level? Up to now the EAA has not played an active role in European politics. Not being “political” is actually leading to an implicit support of existing structures and to an inability to react to important developments. In this Round Table we would like to draw on the experiences and expertise of EAA members which have in their official role or by their own initiative acted politically in the interest of archaeology. Together with them we would like to develop proposals for a future political strategy of the EAA. With the support of the EAA Executive Board and a majority of the members – to be sought for at the ABM – these proposals could be integrated into the new Business Model that is currently being developed to
professionalize the EAA. Apart from the invited contributors, we would like to encourage all members of the EAA to share their experiences and ideas with us before during and after the Round Table.

This draft bibliography from CEN TC346 Working Group 14 is designed to assist authorities, archaeological and other consultants, owners, developers, applicants and others responsible for sites of archaeological and historical significance to ensure the best outcome for the preservation of discovered material and may also be helpful in ensuring that relevant legislation and conditions are abided by. It sets out a “decision-making” framework for the in situ preservation of archaeological deposits and identifies mechanisms for assessing and, where appropriate, monitoring of these sites.

Identifying the function and destination of human occupation is a constant problem in archaeological research. Whether it is an architectural analysis or determining the function of a movable vestige within an architecture, archaeologists have always been confronted with questions such as: What was this space used for? or What was the space from which this object came from? Review of existing methods and persistent difficulties. current practice surrounding science workshops will be elaborated on. To do this, the beginnings of a solution are proposed based upon a digital platform, which could be envisaged at a French level or an international level.

Through this presentation, these questions will open the debate.

- to review the practicalities of operating an EAA Working Group. What is the collective experience?
- to consider the overlaps in working group aims and endeavour, thereby identifying common themes
- to draft a statement of intent on future collaborative working, with recommendations to the EAA Executive Board.
professionalize the EAA. Apart from the invited contributors, we would like to encourage all members of the EAA to share their experiences and ideas with us before during and after the Round Table.

You can participate remotely (online) or on-site (Sapienza University of Rome).
Proceedings will be published in the year following the colloquium.

In June 2021 the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) adopted the standard on Cultural heritage-Investigation and Monitoring of archaeological deposits for preservation in situ. This is a product of the CEN Technical Committee on "Conservation of cultural property" (TC 346) Working Group on "Monitoring of Cultural Deposit" (WG 14).
