Title:Anomalous diffusion and Lévy walks distinguish active turbulence
View PDFAbstract:Dense active systems, such as bacterial swarms, display intriguing dynamical states like active turbulence. Some recent experiments also suggest that microorganisms in such dense suspensions, move in signature straight segments punctuated by random, localized knotted patches - Lévy walks - facilitating super-diffusion and efficient means of foraging and survival. However, detecting such anomalous behaviour has so far remained theoretically elusive. By using a hydrodynamic model of "active fluids", we now show that such suspensions are super-diffusive, with associated Lévy walks, which can masquerade as a crossover from ballistic to diffusive scaling in measurements of mean-squared-displacements. We also uncover the origins of this anomolous behaviour in hitherto undetected oscillatory "streaks" in the bacterial flow. Thus, while laying the theoretical framework of an emergent, advantageous strategy in the collective behaviour of microorganisms, our study also provides clear observations for corroboration with experiments as well as underlines the essential differences between active and inertial turbulence.
