Title:$Λ$-Wright--Fisher processes with general selection and opposing environmental effects: fixation and coexistence
View PDFAbstract:Our results reveal a rich variety of parameter-dependent long-term behaviors for a broad class of $\Lambda$-Wright--Fisher processes with frequency-dependent and environmental selection, and they allow us to discriminate the different boundary behaviors by explicit criteria. In particular, we describe situations in which both boundary points are asymptotically inaccessible - an apparently new phenomenon in this context. Such a boundary behavior has significant biological implications, because it exhibits a class of stochastic population models in which selection alone maintains coexistence. If a boundary point is asymptotically accessible, we derive polynomial/exponential decay rates for the probability of not being polynomially/exponentially close to the boundary, depending on some integrability conditions on the involved measures. To prove this result, we establish and employ Siegmund duality. The dual process can be sandwiched at the boundary in between two transformed Lévy processes. This allows us to relate the boundary behavior of the dual to fluctuation properties of the Lévy processes and sheds new light on previously established accessibility conditions. Our method based on Siegmund duality allows us to treat models that so far could not be analyzed by means of moment or Bernstein duality. Moreover, it also leads to a representation of the fixation probability that is particularly useful for simulations.
