A combinatorial formula for the coefficients of multidimensional resultants

This is the approach via the so-called inertia forms or Trägheitsformen. Using clever substitutions, Mertens and Hurwitz gave a criterion, for recognizing such inertia forms, which amounts to a linear system for their numerical coefficients. In this article we explicitly solve this linear system. We do so by identifying a subset of the available equations which forms a unitriangular system. The key notion we use is that of transversal, i.e., a selection of a monomial term in each of the homogeneous polynomials at hand. We need two such transversals which are disjoint and extremal, in the sense that they relate to extremizers of a, possibly new, determinantal inequality for differences of two substochastic matrices. Thanks to this notion of extremal pair of transversals, we derive an explicit formula for the coefficients of general multidimensional resultants, as a sum of terms made of a sign times a product of multinomial coefficients, thereby explicitly showing they are integer-valued. △ Less

On a mod $3$ property of $\ell $-tuples of pairwise commuting permutations

Abstract: Let $S_n$ denote the symmetric group of permutations acting on $n$ elements. We investigate the double sequence $\{N_{\ell}(n)\}$ counting the number of $\ell$ tuples of elements of the symmetric group $S_n$, where the components commute, normalized by the order of $S_n$. We investigate the double sequence $\{N_{\ell}(n)\}$ counting the number of $\ell$ tuples of elements of the symmetric group $S_n$, where the components commute, normalized by the order of $S_n$. These numbers are studied by Bryan and Fulman as the $n$th orbifold characteristics, generalizing work of Macdonald and Hirzebruch--Hofer concerning the ordinary and string-theoretic Euler characteristics of symmetric products. Notably, $N_2(n)$ represents the partition numbers $p(n)$, while $N_{3}(n)$ represents the number of non-equivalent $n$-sheeted coverings of a torus studied by Liskovets and Medynkh. We formulate the conjecture that, for every fixed $p$ and $n$, the $A(p,n,k)$ form a log-concave sequence with respect to $k$. For $p=1$ this is a well known property of unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind. As the $p=2$ case, our conjecture includes a previous one by Heim and Neuhauser, which strengthens a unimodality conjecture for the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook length polynomials. In this article, we prove the $p=\infty$ case of our conjecture. We start from an expression for the $A(p,n,k)$ which follows from an identity by Bryan and Fulman, obtained in the their study of orbifold higher equivariant Euler characteristics. Supervised Class-pairwise NMF for Data Representation and Classification

The added term is mainly weighted by a hyper-parameter to control the balance of the overall formula to guide the optimization process towards the objective… ▽ More Various Non-negative Matrix factorization (NMF) based methods add new terms to the cost function to adapt the model to specific tasks, such as clustering, or to preserve some structural properties in the reduced space (e.g., local invariance). The added term is mainly weighted by a hyper-parameter to control the balance of the overall formula to guide the optimization process towards the objective. The result is a parameterized NMF method. However, NMF method adopts unsupervised approaches to estimate the factorizing matrices. Thus, the ability to perform prediction (e.g. classification) using the new obtained features is not guaranteed. The objective of this work is to design an evolutionary framework to learn the hyper-parameter of the parameterized NMF and estimate the factorizing matrices in a supervised way to be more suitable for classification problems. Moreover, we claim that applying NMF-based algorithms separately to different class-pairs instead of applying it once to the whole dataset improves the effectiveness of the matrix factorization process. This results in training multiple parameterized NMF algorithms with different balancing parameter values. A cross-validation combination learning framework is adopted and a Genetic Algorithm is used to identify the optimal set of hyper-parameter values. The experiments we conducted on both real and synthetic datasets demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approach. △ Less

Non-Negative Matrix Factorization with Scale Data Structure Preservation

In addition to preserving the data positivity property, it aims also to preserve the structure of data during matrix factorization. The idea is to add, to the NMF cost function, a penalty term to impose a scale relationship between the pairwise similarity matrices of the original and transformed data points. The solution of the new model involves deriving a new parametrized update scheme for the coefficient matrix, which makes it possible to improve the quality of reduced data when used for clustering and classification. The proposed clustering algorithm is compared to some existing NMF-based algorithms and to some manifold learning-based algorithms when applied to some real-life datasets. Non-Abelian correlation inequalities and stable determinantal polynomials

The latter therefore provide a simplified toy model for the investig… ▽ More We consider the correlations of invariant observables for the $O(N)$ and $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{N-1}$ models at zero coupling, namely, with respect to the natural group-invariant measure. In the limit where one takes a large power of the integrand, we show that these correlations become inverse powers of the Kirchhoff polynomial. The latter therefore provide a simplified toy model for the investigation of inequalities between products of correlations. Properties such as ferromagnetic behavior for spin model correlations correspond, in this asymptotic limit, to log-ultramodularity which is a consequence of the Rayleigh property of the Kirchhoff polynomial. In addition to the above rigorous asymptotics, the main result of this article is a general theorem which shows that inverse half-integer powers of certain determinantal stable polynomials, such as the Kirchhoff polynomials, satisfy generalizations of the GKS 2 inequalities and the Ginibre inequalities. We conclude with some open problems, e.g., the question of whether the last statement holds for powers which are not half-integers. This leads to a Hirota-bilinear analogue of the complete monotonicity property recently investigated by Scott and Sokal. △ Less

A local injective proof of log-concavity for increasing spanning forests

Abstract: In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$ proceed via tree-level $b\to u$ and penguin $b\to s$ transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays $B_s \to ηη, ηη^{\prime}, η^{\prime}η^{\prime} $ are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. Measurement of two-particle correlations in hadronic $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at Belle

In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possib… ▽ More The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the $e^+e^-$ collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV is reported. The hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime. △ Less

The analysis utilizes a method where the tag-side $B$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode, and the signal-side $τ$ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^{\ast})= 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within $0.2$ and $1.1$ standard deviations, respectively, while their combination agrees with the Standard Model predictions within $1.2$ standard deviations. △ Less

Along the way we provide a very elementary proof à la Racah, namely, only using the Chu-Vandermonde Theorem, for Dixon's Summation Theorem. Measurement of the $D^{\ast-}$ polarization in the decay $B^0 \to D^{\ast -}τ^+ν_τ$

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the $D^{\ast -}$ meson polarization in the decay $B^0 \to D^{*-} τ^+ν_τ$ using the full data sample of 772$\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Unfolded differential decay rates of four kinematic variables fully describing the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar ν_\ell$ decay in the $B$-meson rest frame are presented. We measure the total branching fraction $\mathcal{B}( \bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar ν_\ell ) = \left(4.95 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.22 \right) \times 10^{-2}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic respectively. Abstract: We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. A Second-Quantized Kolmogorov-Chentsov Theorem via the Operator Product Expansion

Abstract: We establish a direct connection between two fundamental topics: one in probability theory and one in quantum field theory. The first topic is the problem of pointwise multiplication of random Schwartz distributions which has been the object of recent progress thanks to Hairer's theory of regularity structures and the theory of paracontrolled distributions introduced by Gubinelli, Imkeller and Per… ▽ More We establish a direct connection between two fundamental topics: one in probability theory and one in quantum field theory. The first topic is the problem of pointwise multiplication of random Schwartz distributions which has been the object of recent progress thanks to Hairer's theory of regularity structures and the theory of paracontrolled distributions introduced by Gubinelli, Imkeller and Perkowski. The second topic is Wilson's operator product expansion which is a general property of models of quantum field theory and a cornerstone of the bootstrap approach to conformal field theory. Our main result is a general theorem for the almost sure construction of products of random distributions by mollification and suitable additive as well as multiplicative renormalizations. The hypothesis for this theorem is the operator product expansion with precise bounds for pointwise correlations. We conjecture these bounds to be universal features of quantum field theories with gapped dimension spectrum. Our theorem can accommodate logarithmic corrections, anomalous scaling dimensions and even lack of translation invariance. However, it only applies to fields with short distance singularities that are milder than white noise. As an application, we provide a detailed treatment of a scalar conformal field theory of mean field type, i.e., the fractional massless free field also known as the fractional Gaussian field. △ Less

Abstract: We report inclusive and exclusive measurements for $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ production in $B$ decays. We measure $\mathcal{B}(B \to χ_{c1} X)$= $(3.03 \pm 0.05(\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.24(\mbox{syst})) \times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B \to χ_{c2} X)$= $(0.70 \pm 0.06(\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.10(\mbox{syst})) \times 10^{-3}$. For $χ_{c1}$ production, we report the first observation in the $B^+ \to χ_{c1} π^+ π^- K^+$, $B^0 \to χ_{c1} π^+ π^- K_S^0$ and $B^0 \to χ_{c1} π^0 π^- K^+$ decay modes. Using these decay modes, we observe a difference in the production mechanism of $χ_{c2}$ in comparison to $χ_{c1}$ in $B$ decays. In addition, we report searches for $X(3872)$ and $χ_{c1}(2P)$ in the $B^+ \to (χ_{c1} π^+ π^-) K^+$ decay mode. Towards three-dimensional conformal probability

Abstract: In this outline of a program, based on rigorous renormalization group theory, we introduce new definitions which allow one to formulate precise mathematical conjectures related to conformal invariance as studied by physicists in the area known as higher-dimensional conformal bootstrap which has developed at a breathtaking pace over the last few years. We also explore a second theme, intimately tie… ▽ More In this outline of a program, based on rigorous renormalization group theory, we introduce new definitions which allow one to formulate precise mathematical conjectures related to conformal invariance as studied by physicists in the area known as higher-dimensional conformal bootstrap which has developed at a breathtaking pace over the last few years. We also explore a second theme, intimately tied to conformal invariance for random distributions, which can be construed as a search for very general first and second-quantized Kolmogorov-Chentsov Theorems. First-quantized refers to regularity of sample paths. Second-quantized refers to regularity of generalized functionals or Hida distributions and relates to the operator product expansion. We formulate this program in both the Archimedean and $p$-adic situations. Indeed, the study of conformal field theory and its connections with probability provides a golden opportunity where $p$-adic analysis can lead the way towards a better understanding of open problems in the Archimedean setting. Finally, we present a summary of progress made on a $p$-adic hierarchical model and point out possible connections to number theory. One $B$ meson in the event is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode while the other, on the signal side, is partially reconstructed from a charged lepton and either a $D^+$ or $D^0$ meson in a total of 23 hadronic decay modes. The isospin-averaged branching fraction of the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ is found to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^- \ell^+ ν_{\ell})=(2.31\pm 0.03(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.11(\mathrm{syst}))\%$. Analyzing the differential decay rate as a function of the hadronic recoil with the parameterization of Caprini, Lelouch and Neubert and using the form-factor prediction $\mathcal{G}(1)=1.0541\pm 0.0083$ calculated by FNAL/MILC, we obtain $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(40.12\pm 1.34)\times 10^{-3}$, where $η_\mathrm{EW}$ is the electroweak correction factor. Alternatively, assuming the model-independent form-factor parameterization of Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed and using lattice QCD data from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations, we find $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(41.10 \pm 1.14)\times 10^{-3}$. △ Less

We… ▽ More We present a measurement of the branching fraction and the longitudinal polarization fraction of $B^{0}\rightarrowρ^+ρ^-$ decays, as well as the time-dependent $CP$ violating parameters in decays into longitudinally polarized $ρ^{+}ρ^{-}$ pairs with Belle's final data set of $772\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs, at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance, collected at the asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider KEKB. We obtain ${\cal B}(B^0 \rightarrow ρ^+ ρ^-)=(28.3\pm 1.5\;(\rm stat) \pm 1.5\;(\rm syst))\times 10^{-6}$, $f_L = 0.988\pm 0.012\;(\rm stat ) \pm0.023\;(\rm syst)$, ${\cal A}_{CP} = 0.00\pm0.10\;(\rm stat ) \pm0.06\;(\rm syst)$, ${\cal S}_{CP} = -0.13\pm0.15\;(\rm stat ) \pm0.05\;(\rm syst).$ We perform an isospin analysis to constrain the CKM angle $φ_2$ and obtain two solutions with \begin{eqnarray} φ_{2} = (93.7\pm10.6)^{\circ},\nonumber \end{eqnarray} being most compatible with other Standard-Model based fits to the data. △ Less

Abstract: We report the first observation of the decays $B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{(*)-}$. The data sample of $711$ fb$^{-1}$ used in this analysis corresponds to $772$ million $B\bar{B}$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. Abstract: We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons ($e^+e^- \rightarrow hhX$) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. For example, we find that the ratio of same-sign pion pairs over opposite-sign pion pairs drops toward higher fractional energies where disfavored fragmentation is expected to be suppressed. These di-hadron results are obtained from a $655\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Abstract: We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}$. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair p… ▽ More We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function $G_1^\perp$. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near $\sqrt{s}\approx10.58$ GeV. △ Less

The data samples contain ( 471 +/- 3 ) x 10^6 BB pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and ( 772 +/- 11 ) x 10^6, BB pairs recorded by the Belle detector. We measure the CP asymmetry parameters -eta_f S = +0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (syst.) and C = -0.02 +/- 0.07 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (syst.). These results correspond to the first observation of CP violation in B0->D(*)CP h0 decays.
