In this paper we present a multi-stage stochastic optimization model to solve an inventory routing problem for recyclable waste collection. The objective is the maximization of the total expected profit of the waste collection company. The decisions are related to the selection of the bins to be visited and the corresponding routing plan in a predefined time horizon. Stochasticity in waste accumulation is modeled through scenario trees generated via conditional density estimation and dynamic stochastic approximation techniques. The proposed formulation is solved through a rolling horizon approach, providing a worst-case analysis on its performance. Extensive computational experiments are carried out on small- and large-sized instances based on real data provided by a large Portuguese waste collection company. The impact of stochasticity on waste generation is examined through stochastic measures, and the performance of the rolling horizon approach is evaluated. Some managerial insights on different configurations of the instances are finally discussed.

Dealing with multi-objective problems by using generation methods has some interesting advantages since it provides the decision-maker with the complete information about the set of non-dominated points (Pareto front) and a clear overview of the problem. However, providing many solutions to the decision-maker might also be overwhelming. As an alternative approach, presenting a representative set of solutions of the Pareto front may be advantageous. Choosing such a representative set is by itself also a multi-objective problem that must consider the number of solutions to present, the uniformity, and/or the coverage of the representation, to guarantee its quality. This paper proposes three algorithms for the representation problem for multi-objective integer linear programming problems with two or more objective functions, each one of them dealing with each dimension of the problem (cardinality, coverage, and uniformity). Such algorithms are all based on the $ε$-constraint approach. In addition, the paper also presents strategies to overcome poor estimations of the Pareto front bounds. The algorithms were tested on the ability to efficiently generate the whole Pareto front or its representation. The uniformity and cardinality algorithms proved to be very efficient both in binary and integer problems, being amongst the best in the literature. Both coverage and uniformity algorithms provide good quality representations on their targeted objective, while the cardinality algorithm appears to be the most flexible, privileging uniformity for lower cardinality representations and coverage on higher cardinality.

Sustainable Supply Chain (SSC) management aims at integrating economic, environmental and social goals to assist in the long-term planning of a company and its supply chains. There is no consensus in the literature as to whether social and environmental responsibilities are profit-compatible. However, the conflicting nature of these goals is explicit when considering specific assessment measures and, in this scenario, multi-objective optimization is a way to represent problems that simultaneously optimize the goals. This paper proposes a Lagrangian matheuristic method, called $AugMathLagr$, to solve a hard and relevant multi-objective problem found in the literature. $AugMathLagr$ was extensively tested using artificial instances defined by a generator presented in this paper. The results show a competitive performance of $AugMathLagr$ when compared with an exact multi-objective method limited by time and a matheuristic recently proposed in the literature and adapted here to address the studied problem. In addition, computational results on a case study are presented and analyzed, and demonstrate the outstanding performance of $AugMathLagr$.
