We have performed three-dimensional thunderstorm real simulations using the two-moment and three-moment bulk microphysics schemes in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. We have analyzed three cases to understand the potential differences between the double-moment (Morrison-2M) and National Taiwan University triple-moment (NTU-3M) microphysics parameterizations in capturing the characteristics of lightning events over the Indian subcontinent. Despite general resemblances in these schemes, the simulations reveal distinct differences in storm structure, cloud hydrometeors formation, and precipitation. The lightning flash counts from the in situ lightning detection network (LDN) are also used to compare the simulation of storms. The Lightning Potential Index (LPI) is computed for Morrison-2M and NTU-3M microphysics schemes and compared it with the Lightning Detection Network (LDN) observation. In most cases, the Morrison-2M shows more LPI than the NTU-3M scheme. Both the schemes also differ in simulating rainfall and other thermodynamical, dynamical, and microphysical parameters in the model. Here, we have attempted to identify the basic differences between these two schemes, which may be responsible for the discrepancies in the simulations. In particular, the Morrison-2M produced much higher surface precipitation rates. The effects on the size distributions cloud hydrometeors between two microphysical schemes are important to simulate the biases in the precipitation and lightning flash counts. The inclusions of ice crystal shapes are responsible for many of the key differences between the two microphysics simulations. Different approaches in treating cloud ice, snow, and graupel may have an impact on the simulation of lightning and precipitation. Results show that the simulation of lightning events is sensitive to microphysical parameterization schemes in NWP models.

The seasonal prediction of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) and Monsoon Intraseasonal Oscillations (MISO), as well as the Madden Julian Oscillations (MJO) that strongly modulate MISO, is important to the country for water and crop management. We have analyzed the precipitation, convection, and total cloud fraction (TCF) in the sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Projects (CMIP6). This study highlights the significant differences in simulating MISO and MJO between the two groups of selected CMIP6 models and physical reasons behind them. The mean and intraseasonal features of MISO and MJO varied significantly in CMIP6 models, which are linked with a better depiction of convection and total cloud fraction. The probability distributions of rainfall and OLR in CMIP6 models indicate significant variations in simulating ISM precipitating clouds. TaiESM1 and IITM-ESM demonstrate improvements in capturing the MISO features. TaiESM1 depicts better eastward propagation of MJO during both summer and winter. The biases in OLR and TCF are also less in the IITM-ESM and TaiESM1 models than in CanESM5 and FGOALS-g3. The results demonstrate the importance of cloud and convection in CMIP6 models to depict realistic MISO and MJO and provide a road map for improving ISM climate prediction and projections.

On a multi-connected domain $Ω$, a version of Heglotz's representation is known. Carathéodory's approximation was not known. We formulate and prove it and then show that it is equivalent to the known form of Herglotz's representation. Additionally, it also enables us to prove a new Heglotz's representation in the style of Koranyi and Pukanszky. Of particular interest is the fact that the scaling technique of the disc is replaced by Carathéodory's approximation theorem while proving this new form of Herglotz's representation.
Carathéodory's approximation theorem is also proved for matrix-valued functions on a multi-connected domain.

An unresolved problem of present generation coupled climate models is the realistic distribution of rainfall over Indian monsoon region, which is also related to the persistent dry bias over Indian land mass. Therefore, quantitative prediction of the intensity of rainfall events has remained a challenge for the state-of-the-art global coupled models. Guided by the observation, it is hypothesized that insufficient growth of cloud droplets and processes responsible for the cloud to rain water conversion are key components to distinguish between shallow to convective clouds. The new diffusional growth rates and relative dispersion based autoconversion from the Eulerian-Lagrangian particleby-particle based small-scale model provide a pathway to revisit the parameterizations in climate models for monsoon clouds. The realistic information of cloud drop size distribution is incorporated in the microphysical parameterization scheme of climate model. Two sensitivity simulations are conducted using coupled forecast system (CFSv2) model. When our physically based small-scale derived modified parameterization is used, a coupled climate model simulates the probability distribution (PDF) of rainfall and accompanying specific humidity, liquid water content, and outgoing long-wave radiation (OLR) with increasing accuracy. The improved simulation of rainfall PDF appears to have been aided by much improved simulation of OLR and resulted better simulation of the ISM rainfall.

The quantitative prediction of the intensity of rainfall events (light or heavy) has remained a challenge in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. For the first time the mean coefficient of diffusional growth rates are calculated using an Eulerian-Lagrangian particle-based small-scale model on in situ airborne measurement data of Cloud Aerosol Interaction and Precipitation Enhancement Experiment (CAIPEEX) during monsoon over Indian sub-continent. The results show that diffusional growth rates varies in the range of 0.00025 - 0.0015(cm/s). The generic problem of the overestimation of light rain in NWP models might be related with the choice of cm in the model. It is also shown from DNS experiment using Eulerian-Lagrangian particle-based small-scale model that the relative dispersion is constrained with average values in the range of ~ 0.2 - 0.37 (~ 0.1- 0.26) in less humid (more humid) conditions. This is in agreement with in situ airborne observation (dispersion ~ 0.36) and previous study over Indian sub-continent. The linear relationship between relative dispersion and cloud droplet number concentration (NC) is obtained from this study using CAIPEEX observation over Indian subcontinent. The dispersion based autoconversion-scheme for Indian region must be useful for the Indian summer monsoon precipitation calculation in the general circulation model. The present study also provide valuable guidance for the parameterization of effective radius, important for radiation scheme.

Simulation of turbulent flows, especially at the edges of clouds in the atmosphere, is an inherently challenging task. Hitherto, the best possible computational method to perform such experiments is the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). DNS involves solving non-linear partial differential equations for fluid flows, also known as Navier-Stokes equations, on discretized grid boxes in a three-dimensional space. It is a valuable paradigm that has guided the numerical weather prediction models to compute rainfall formation. However, DNS cannot be performed for large domains of practical utility to the weather forecast community. Here, we introduce DeepClouds.ai, a 3D-UNET that simulates the outputs of a rising cloud DNS experiment. The problem of increasing the domain size in DNS is addressed by mapping an inner 3D cube to the complete 3D cube from the output of the DNS discretized grid simulation. Our approach effectively captures turbulent flow dynamics without having to solve the complex dynamical core. The baseline shows that the deep learning-based simulation is comparable to the partial-differential equation-based model as measured by various score metrics. This framework can be used to further the science of turbulence and cloud flows by enabling simulations over large physical domains in the atmosphere. It would lead to cascading societal benefits by improved weather predictions via advanced parameterization schemes.

In this note, we first show that the closed algebra generated by them in the symmetrized bidisc is a proper subalgebra of the algebra of all bounded holomorphic functions. We follow it up by showing, nevertheless, certain approximation results. Revolving around the theme of a celebrated classical result of Caratheodory, which states that any holomorphic function defined on the open unit disc and mapping into it, can be approximated uniformly on compact subsets by finite Blaschke products, we prove a host of results on the symmetrized bidisc (many of them extending to the symmetrized polydisc) culminating in a Caratheodory type theorem for matrix-valued holomorphic functions.

We find an explicit tetrablock isometric dilation for every member $(A_α, B, P)$ of a family of tetrablock contractions indexed by a parameter $α$ in the closed unit disc (only the first operator of the tetrablock contraction depends on the parameter). The dilation space is the same for any member of the family. Explicit dilation for the adjoint tetrablock contraction $(A_α^*, B^*, P^*)$ for every member of the family mentioned above is constructed as well. This example is important because it has been claimed in the literature that this example does not have a dilation. Taking cue from this construction and using Toeplitz operators on $H^2_{\mathbb D}(\mathcal D_P)$, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a tetrablock contraction to have a certain type of tetrablock isometric dilation.

This paper demonstrates two different fusion techniques at two different levels of a human face recognition process. The first one is called data fusion at lower level and the second one is the decision fusion towards the end of the recognition process. At first a data fusion is applied on visual and corresponding thermal images to generate fused image. Data fusion is implemented in the wavelet domain after decomposing the images through Daubechies wavelet coefficients (db2). During the data fusion maximum of approximate and other three details coefficients are merged together. After that Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is applied over the fused coefficients and finally two different artificial neural networks namely Multilayer Perceptron(MLP) and Radial Basis Function(RBF) networks have been used separately to classify the images. After that, for decision fusion based decisions from both the classifiers are combined together using Bayesian formulation. For experiments, IRIS thermal/visible Face Database has been used. Experimental results show that the performance of multiple classifier system along with decision fusion works well over the single classifier system.

This paper presents a comparative study of two different methods, which are based on fusion and polar transformation of visual and thermal images. Here, investigation is done to handle the challenges of face recognition, which include pose variations, changes in facial expression, partial occlusions, variations in illumination, rotation through different angles, change in scale etc. To overcome these obstacles we have implemented and thoroughly examined two different fusion techniques through rigorous experimentation. In the first method log-polar transformation is applied to the fused images obtained after fusion of visual and thermal images whereas in second method fusion is applied on log-polar transformed individual visual and thermal images. After this step, which is thus obtained in one form or another, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is applied to reduce dimension of the fused images. Log-polar transformed images are capable of handling complicacies introduced by scaling and rotation. The main objective of employing fusion is to produce a fused image that provides more detailed and reliable information, which is capable to overcome the drawbacks present in the individual visual and thermal face images. Finally, those reduced fused images are classified using a multilayer perceptron neural network. The database used for the experiments conducted here is Object Tracking and Classification Beyond Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS) database benchmark thermal and visual face images. The second method has shown better performance, which is 95.71% (maximum) and on an average 93.81% as correct recognition rate.

Finally, the images projected into eigenspace are classified using a multi-layer perceptron. In the experiments we have used Object Tracking and Classification Beyond Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS) database. Experimental results show that the proposed approach significantly improves the verification and identification performance and the success rate is 99.25%.

The proposed approach registers the training and testing visual face images by log-polar transformation, which is capable to handle complicacies introduced by scaling and rotation. Log-polar images are projected into eigenspace and finally classified using an improved multi-layer perceptron. In the experiments we have used ORL face database and Object Tracking and Classification Beyond Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS) database for visual face images. Experimental results show that the proposed approach significantly improves the recognition performances from visual to log-polar-visual face images. In case of ORL face database, recognition rate for visual face images is 89.5% and that is increased to 97.5% for log-polar-visual face images whereas for OTCBVS face database recognition rate for visual images is 87.84% and 96.36% for log-polar-visual face images.

Several factors affect face recognition performance including pose variations, facial expression changes, occlusions, and most importantly illumination changes. So, image pixel fusion of thermal and visual images is a solution to overcome the drawbacks present in the individual thermal and visual face images. Fused images are projected into eigenspace and finally classified using a multi-layer perceptron. In the experiments we have used Object Tracking and Classification Beyond Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS) database benchmark thermal and visual face images. Experimental results show that the proposed approach significantly improves the verification and identification performance and the success rate is 95.07%. The main objective of employing fusion is to produce a fused image that provides the most detailed and reliable information. Fusion of multiple images together produces a more efficient representation of the image.

In this paper we present a technique for fusion of optical and thermal face images based on image pixel fusion approach. Out of several factors, which affect face recognition performance in case of visual images, illumination changes are a significant factor that needs to be addressed. Thermal images are better in handling illumination conditions but not very consistent in capturing texture details of the faces. Other factors like sunglasses, beard, moustache etc also play active role in adding complicacies to the recognition process. Fusion of thermal and visual images is a solution to overcome the drawbacks present in the individual thermal and visual face images. Here fused images are projected into an eigenspace and the projected images are classified using a radial basis function (RBF) neural network and also by a multi-layer perceptron (MLP). In the experiments Object Tracking and Classification Beyond Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS) database benchmark for thermal and visual face images have been used. Comparison of experimental results show that the proposed approach performs significantly well in recognizing face images with a success rate of 96% and 95.07% for RBF Neural Network and MLP respectively.

Artificial neural networks have already shown their success in face recognition and similar complex pattern recognition tasks. However, a major disadvantage of the technique is that it is extremely slow during training for larger classes and hence not suitable for real-time complex problems such as pattern recognition. This is an attempt to develop a parallel framework for the training algorithm of a perceptron. In this paper, two general architectures for a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) have been demonstrated. The first architecture is All-Class-in-One-Network (ACON) where all the classes are placed in a single network and the second one is One-Class-in-One-Network (OCON) where an individual single network is responsible for each and every class. Capabilities of these two architectures were compared and verified in solving human face recognition, which is a complex pattern recognition task where several factors affect the recognition performance like pose variations, facial expression changes, occlusions, and most importantly illumination changes. Both the structures were implemented and tested for face recognition purpose and experimental results show that the OCON structure performs better than the generally used ACON ones in term of training convergence speed of the network. Unlike the conventional sequential approach of training the neural networks, the OCON technique may be implemented by training all the classes of the face images simultaneously.

In this paper fusion of visual and thermal images in wavelet transformed domain has been presented. Here, Daubechies wavelet transform, called as D2, coefficients from visual and corresponding coefficients computed in the same manner from thermal images are combined to get fused coefficients. After decomposition up to fifth level (Level 5) fusion of coefficients is done. Inverse Daubechies wavelet transform of those coefficients gives us fused face images. The main advantage of using wavelet transform is that it is well-suited to manage different image resolution and allows the image decomposition in different kinds of coefficients, while preserving the image information. Fused images thus found are passed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for reduction of dimensions and then those reduced fused images are classified using a multi-layer perceptron. For experiments IRIS Thermal/Visual Face Database was used. Experimental results show that the performance of the approach presented here achieves maximum success rate of 100% in many cases.

This paper investigates the multiresolution level-1 and level-2 Quotient based Fusion of thermal and visual images. In the proposed system, the method-1 namely "Decompose then Quotient Fuse Level-1" and the method-2 namely "Decompose-Reconstruct then Quotient Fuse Level-2" both work on wavelet transformations of the visual and thermal face images. The wavelet transform is well-suited to manage different image resolution and allows the image decomposition in different kinds of coefficients, while preserving the image information without any loss. This approach is based on a definition of an illumination invariant signature image which enables an analytic generation of the image space with varying illumination. The quotient fused images are passed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for dimension reduction and then those images are classified using a multi-layer perceptron (MLP). The performances of both the methods have been evaluated using OTCBVS and IRIS databases. All the different classes have been tested separately, among them the maximum recognition result is 100%.
