The high-pressure behavior of monoclinic VO$_2$ is revisited by a combination of Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction on a single crystal under hydrostatic conditions at room temperature. A soft mode is observed up to P$_c$ = 13.9(1) GPa. At this pressure, an isostructural phase transition between two monoclinic phases M$_1$ and M$_1$' hinders this instability. The features of this transformation (no apparent volume jump) indicate that the compression at ambient temperature passes close to a critical point. An analysis based on the Landau theory of phase transitions gives a complete description of the P-T phase diagram. The M1' is characterized by spontaneous displacements of the oxygen sub-lattice without any strong modification of the VV dimers distances nor the twist angle of vanadium chains. The spontaneous displacements of oxygen and the spontaneous deformations of the ($b_{M1}$, $c_{M1}$) plane follow the same quadratic dependence with pressure and scales with spontaneous shifts of the Raman phonons located at 225, 260 and 310 cm$^{-1}$. Pressure-induced shifts of the Raman peaks allows for new assignment of several Raman modes. In particular, the A$_g$(1)+B$_g$(1) modes at 145 cm$^{-1}$ are identified as the vanadium displacive phonons. A second transformation in the metallic phase X, which is found triclinic (P$\bar1$) is observed starting at 32 GPa, with a wide coexistence region (up to 42 GPa). Upon decompression, phase X transforms, between 20 GPa and 3 GPa, to another phase that is neither the M$_1$' nor M$_1$ phase. The structural transitions identified under pressure match with all the previously reported electronic modifications confirming that lattice and electronic degrees of freedom are closely coupled in this correlated material.

Lead vanadate PbVO3 is a polar crystal with a P4mm space group at ambient conditions. It is isostructural with the model soft-mode driven ferroelectric PbTiO3, but differs from it by the so-called 'supertetragonal' elongation of its unit cell. In this paper, we report a combined study of the lattice dynamics of PbVO3 by Raman spectroscopy at room temperature and first-principle calculations. All zone-center transverse optical (TO) phonon modes are identified by polarized, angle-dependent Raman spectroscopy and assigned as follows: E modes at 136, 269, 374 and 508 cm-1, A1 modes at 188, 429 and 874 cm-1 and B1 mode at 319 cm-1. The calculations confirm the experimental symmetry assignment and allow to obtain the longitudinal (LO) phonons wavenumbers. Besides, we analyze the mode eigenvectors in detail, in order to identify the atomic displacements associated with each mode and compare them with PbTiO3. In spite of their differences in chemistry and strain, the phonon eigenvectors are found to be remarkably comparable in both compounds. We discuss the position of the ferroelectric soft mode in PbVO3 as compared to PbTiO3. A sizeable splitting of the B1+E modes appears as a characteristic feature of supertetragonal phases. The peculiarity of the vanadyl V-O bond frequency in PbVO3 is also addressed.

In this paper, we revisit the high-pressure behavior of BaZrO3 by a combination of first-principle calculations, Raman spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction under high pressure. We confirm experimentally the cubic-to-tetragonal transition at 10 GPa and find no evidence for any other phase transition up to 45 GPa, the highest pressures investigated, at variance with past reports. We re-investigate phase stability with density functional theory considering not only the known tetragonal (I4/mcm) phase but also other potential antiferrodistortive candidates. This shows that the tetragonal phase becomes progressively more stable upon increasing pressure as compared to phases with more complex tilt systems. The possibility for a second transition to another tilted phase at higher pressures, and in particular to the very common orthorhombic Pnma structure, is therefore ruled out.

The complete set of structural parameters of the new series of compounds NiNb$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_6$ ($0\leq x \leq 2$) with the unusual columbite-type structure is presented here. In the samples containing vanadium, this crystalline structure was stabilized by synthesis in conditions of high pressure and high temperature. Here we report here the first Raman spectrum for the NiV$_2$O$_6$-\textsl{Pbcn} polymorph and extend the list of the previously observed modes for the NiNb$_2$O$_6$. The evolution of the vibrational Raman spectrum produced when the vanadium is substituted for niobium along the series is also presented and discussed. This evolution is interpreted by taking into account the changes in the local structural environment of the niobium/vanadium atoms and its influence over the nickel-oxygen bonds around them. The presence of vanadium atoms favors an increase of the symmetry in the arrangement of oxygen atoms around the nickel-ones; in counterpart, the vanadium is in an octahedral environment which is more distorted than that of the niobium. Because of these apparently subtle differences, the homogeneous distribution of vanadium in the solid solution NiNb$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_6$ is not possible.

This work reports on the pressure dependence of the octahedra tilts and mean Fe-O bond lengths in RFeO3 (R=Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb and Dy), determined through synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering, and their role on the pressure induced phase transition displayed by all of these compounds. For larger rare-earth cations (Nd-Sm), both anti- and in-phase octahedra tilting decrease as pressure increases, whereas the reverse behavior is observed for smaller ones (Gd-Dy). EuFeO3 stands at the borderline, as the tilts are pressure independent. For the compounds where the tilts increase with pressure, the FeO6 octahedra are compressed at lower rates than for those ones exhibiting opposite pressure tilt dependence. The crossover between the two opposite pressure behaviors is discussed and faced with the rules grounded on the current theoretical approaches. The similarity of the pressure-induced isostructural insulator-to-metal phase transition, observed in the whole series, point out that the tilts play a minor role in its driving mechanisms. A clear relationship between octahedra compressibility and critical pressure is ascertained.

We report a high-pressure study of orthorhombic rare-earth manganites AMnO3 using Raman scattering (for A = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb and Dy) and synchrotron X-ray diffraction (for A = Pr, Sm, Eu, and Dy). In all cases, a structural and insulator-to-metal transition was evidenced, with a critical pressure that depends on the A-cation size. We analyze the compression mechanisms at work in the different manganites via the pressure dependence of the lattice parameters, the shear strain in the a-c plane, and the Raman bands associated with out-of-phase MnO6 rotations and in-plane O2 symmetric stretching modes. Our data show a crossover across the rare-earth series between two different kinds of behavior. For the smallest A-cations, the compression is nearly isotropic in the ac plane, with presumably only very slight changes of tilt angles and Jahn-Teller distortion. As the radius of the A-cation increases, the pressure-induced reduction of Jahn-Teller distortion becomes more pronounced and increasingly significant as a compression mechanism, while the pressure-induced bending of octahedra chains becomes conversely less pronounced. We finally discuss our results in the light of the notion of chemical pressure, and show that the analogy with hydrostatic pressure works quite well for manganites with small A-cations but can be misleading with large A-cations.

We consider a toy model of interacting Dirac fermions in a 1+1 dimensional space time describing the exterior of a star collapsing to a blackhole. In this situation we give a rigorous proof of the {\em Hawking effect}, namely that under the associated quantum evolution, an initial vacuum state will converge when $t\to +\infty$ to a thermal state at Hawking temperature. We establish this result both for observables falling into the blackhole along null characteristics, and for static observables. We also consider the case of an interaction localized near the star boundary, obtaining similar results. We hence extend to an interacting model previous results of Bachelot and Melnyk, obtained for free Dirac fields.

The interaction of coexisting structural instabilities in multiferroic materials gives rise to intriguing coupling phenomena and extraordinarily rich phase diagrams, both in bulk materials and strained thin films. Here we investigate the multiferroic BiMnO3 with its peculiar 6s2 electrons and four interacting mechanisms: electric polarity, octahedra tilts, magnetism, and cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion. We have probed structural transitions under high pressure by synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy up to 60 GPa. We show that BiMnO3 displays under pressure a rich sequence of five phases with a great variety of structures and properties, including a metallic phase above 53 GPa and, between 37 and 53 GPa, a strongly elongated monoclinic phase that allows ferroelectricity, which contradicts the traditional expectation that ferroelectricity vanishes under pressure. Between 7 and 37 GPa, the Pnma structure remains remarkably stable but shows a reduction of the Jahn-Teller distortion in a way that differs from the behavior observed in the archetypal orthorhombic Jahn-Teller distorted perovskite LaMnO3.

Six phase transitions are reported in the 0-60 GPa range. At low pressures, up to 15 GPa, 4 transitions are evidenced at 4, 5, 7 and 11 GPa. In this range, the crystals display large unit cells and complex domain structures, which suggests a competition between complex tilt systems and possibly off-center cation displacements. The non polar Pnma phase remains stable over a large pressure range between 11 and 38 GPa, where the distortion (tilt angles) changes only little with pressure. The two high-pressure phase transitions at 38 and 48 GPa are marked by the occurence of larger unit cells and an increase of the distorsion away from the cubic parent perovskite cell. We find no evidence for a cubic phase at high pressure, nor indications that the structure tends to become cubic. The previously reported insulator-to-metal transition at 50 GPa appears to be symmetry breaking.

Both experiments show that the orthorhombic Pnma structure remains stable up to the highest pressures measured, in contradiction to ab-initio predictions. A fit of the compression data with a second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state yields a bulk modulus K0 of 181.0(6) GPa. The orthorhombic distortion is found to increase slightly with pressure, in agreement with previous experiments at lower pressures and the general rules for the evolution of perovskites under pressure. High-pressure polarized Raman spectra also enable us to clarify the Raman mode assignment of CTO and identify the modes corresponding to rigid rotation of the octahedra, A-cation shifts and Ti-O bond stretching. The Raman signature is then discussed in terms of compression mechanisms.

We investigate the cubic to tetragonal phase transition in the pressure-temperature phase diagram of strontium titanate SrTiO3 (STO) by means of Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction on single crystal samples. X-ray diffraction experiments are performed at room temperature, 381 and 467 K up to 53 GPa, 30 GPa and 26 GPa respectively. The observation of the superstructure reflections in the X-ray patterns provides evidence that the crystal undergoes at all investigated temperatures a pressure-induced transition from cubic to the tetragonal I4/mcm phase, identical to the low-temperature phase. No other phase transition is observed at room temperature up to 53 GPa. Together with previously published data, our results allow us to propose a new linear phase boundary in the pressure-temperature phase diagram. The data are analyzed in the framework of the Landau theory of phase transitions. With a revised value of the coupling coefficient between the order parameter and the volume spontaneous strain, the model built from pressure-independent coefficients reproduces satisfactorily the boundary in the phase diagram, but fails at reflecting the more pronounced second-order character of the pressure-induced phase transition as compared to the temperature-induced transition. We propose a new Landau potential suitable for the description of the pressure-induced phase transition. Finally, we show that particular attention has to be paid to hydrostatic conditions in the study of the high-pressure phase transition in STO.

The intermediate phase from 3 to 9 GPa crystallizes in a monoclinic space group, with octahedra tilts and small cation displacements. When the pressure is further increased the cation displacements (and thus the polar character) of BiFeO3 is suppressed above 10 GPa. The above 10 GPa observed non-polar orthorhombic Pnma structure is in agreement with recent theoretical ab-initio prediction, while the intermediate monoclinic phase was not predicted theoretically.

Two novel room-temperature phase transitions are observed, via synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, in the Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 alloy under hydrostatic pressures up to 16 GPa. A monoclinic (M)-to-rhombohedral (R1) phase transition takes place around 2-3 GPa, while this R1 phase transforms into another rhombohedral phase, R2, at about 6-7 GPa. First-principles calculations assign the R3m and R3c symmetry to R1 and R2, respectively, and reveal that R2 acts as a pressure-induced structural bridge between the polar R3m and a predicted antiferrodistortive R-3c phase.

The effect of high pressures to 40 GPa on the crystal structure and lattice dynamics of AlB2 was studied by synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. There are no indications for a pressure-induced structural phase transition. The Raman spectra of the metallic sample exhibit a well-defined peak near 980 cm^{-1} at 0 GPa which can be attributed to the Raman-active E_{2g} zone-center phonon. Al deficiency of ~11% in AlB2, as indicated by the x-ray data, changes qualitatively the electronic structure, and there are indications that it may have a sizable effect on the pressure dependence of the E_{2g} phonon frequency. Similar changes of the pressure dependence of phonon frequencies, caused by non-stoichiometry, are proposed as an explanation for the unusually large variation of the pressure dependence of T_c for different samples of MgB2.
