Abstract:
The reduced transition probabilities $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2_1^+,2^+_2)$ in $^{70}$Zn and the full $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2^+)$ strength up to S$_n$=7.79 MeV in $^{68}$Ni have been determined at the LISE/GANIL facility using the Coulomb-excitation technique at intermediate beam energy on a $^{208}$Pb target. The $γ$ rays emitted in-flight were detected with an array of 46 BaF$_2$ crystals. The angles of the deflected nuclei were determined in order to disentangle and extract the Coulomb and nuclear contributions to the excitation of the 2$^+$ states. The measured $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2_1^+)$ of 1432(124) e$^2$fm$^4$ for $^{70}$Zn falls in the lower part of the published values which clustered either around 1600 or above 2000 e$^2$fm$^4$, while the $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2^+_2)$ of 53(7) e$^2$fm$^4$ agrees very well with the two published values. The relatively low $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2_1^+)$ of 301(38) e$^2$fm$^4$ for $^{68}$Ni agrees with previous studies and confirms a local magicity at $Z=28, N=40$. Combining the results of the low-energy spectra of $^{68}$Ni and $^{70}$Zn and their shell-model interpretations, it is interesting to notice that four different shapes (spherical, oblate, prolate and triaxial) are present. Finally, a summed $E2$ strength of only about 150 e$^2$fm$^4$ has been found experimentally at high excitation energy, likely due to proton excitations across the $Z=28$ gap. The experimental distribution of this high-energy $E2$ excitation agrees with SM calculations, but its strength is about two times weaker.

Therefore, the paper will review the indirect methods in nuclear astrophysics, their use and their specific problems, old and new, the need to further developments rather than giving complete treatments of each method or reviewing exhaustively the existing literature. The workshop was from its inception aiming also at reviewing the status of the field of nuclear astrophysics and its connections with adjacent branches of physics. A study of interaction of neutron rich oxygen isotopes $^{17,18}$O with light targets has been undertaken in order to determine the optical potentials needed for the transfer reaction $^{13}$C($^{17}$O,$^{18}$O)$^{12}$C. Optical potentials in both incoming and outgoing channels have been determined in a single experiment. This transfer reaction was used to infer the direct capture rate to the $^{17}$F(p,$γ$)$^{18}$Ne which is essential to estimate the production of $^{18}$F at stellar energies in ONe novae. The success of the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) as indirect method for astrophysics is guaranteed if the reaction mechanism is peripheral and the DWBA cross section calculations are warranted and stable against OMP used. We demonstrate the stability of the ANC method and OMP results using good quality elastic and inelastic scattering data with stable beams before extending the procedures to rare ion beams. The peripherality of our reaction is inferred from a semiclassical decomposition of the total scattering amplitude into barrier and internal barrier components.
Comparison between elastic scattering of $^{17}$O, $^{18}$O and $^{16}$O projectiles is made.

The ground state of the proton-rich nucleus 23Al has been studied by one-proton removal on a carbon target at about 50 MeV/nucleon using the EXOGAM + SPEG experimental setup at GANIL. Longitudinal momentum distributions of the 22Mg breakup fragments, inclusive and in coincidence with gamma rays de-exciting the residues, were measured. The ground-state structure of 23Al is found to be a configuration mixing of a d-orbital valence proton coupled to four core states - 0$^{+}_{gs}$, 2$^{+}_{1}$, 4$^{+}_{1}$, 4$^{+}_{2}$. We confirm the ground state spin and parity of 23Al as $J^π = 5/2^{+}$. The measured exclusive momentum distributions are compared with extended Glauber model calculations to extract spectroscopic factors and asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs). The spectroscopic factors are presented in comparison with those obtained from large-scale shell model calculations. We determined the asymptotic normalization coefficient of the nuclear system $^{23}$Al$_{gs}$ $\rightarrow$ $^{22}$Mg(0$^{+}$) + p to be $C^{2}_{d_{5/2}}$($^{23}Al_{gs}$) = (3.90 $\pm$ 0.44) $\times$ 10$^{3}$ fm$^{-1}$, and used it to infer the stellar reaction rate of the direct radiative proton capture $^{22}$Mg(p,$γ$)$^{23}$Al. Astrophysical implications related to $^{22}$Na nucleosynthesis in ONe novae and the use of one-nucleon breakup at intermediate energies as an indirect method in nuclear astrophysics are discussed.

As a prerequisite for such calculation we take from the literature or propose new $\alp-\alp$ potentials that are particularly suitable for this task, i.e. posses a repulsive core and/or reproduce the low energy scattering data and the resonance properties of the $\alp-\alp$ system. The alpha matter EOS is then obtained with the HNC method using Pandharipande-Bethe correlation derived variationally in the lowest order expansion of the energy functional or a simple gaussian function with a healing range determined by the normalization of the radial distribution function in the lowest order. We show that saturation is achieved only via repulsive and shallow potentials that are not consistent with the scattering and resonance constraints.

In the cluster expansion framework of Bose liquids we calculate analytical expressions of the two-body, three-body and four-body diagrams contributing to the g.s. energy of an infinite system of neutral alpha-particles at zero-temperature, interacting via the strong nuclear forces exclusively. This is analytically tractable by assuming a density dependent two-body correlation function of Gaussian type. For the alpha-alpha potential we adopt the phenomenological Ali-Bodmer interaction and semi-microscopic potentials obtained from the Gogny force parametrizations. We show that under such assumptions we achieve a rapid convergence in the cluster expansion, the four-body contributions to the energy being smaller than the two-body and three-body contributions by at least an order of magnitude.

The ground state energy of ideal alpha-matter at T=0 is analyzed within the framework of variational theory of Bose quantum liquids. Calculations are done for three local alpha-alpha potentials with positive volume integrals and two-body correlation functions obtained from the Pandharipande-Bethe equation. The energy per particle of $\alp$ matter is evaluated in the cluster expansion formalism up to four-body diagrams, and using the HNC/0 and HNC/4 approximation for a Bose liquid. Inclusion of higher order terms in the cluster expansion of the condensate fraction are leading to a stronger depletion of the alpha condensate with the density compared to the two-body approximation prediction.

The cross section of the radiative proton capture reaction on the drip line nucleus 12N was investigated using the Asymptotic Normalization Coefficient (ANC) method. We have used the 14N(12N,13O)13C proton transfer reaction at 12 MeV/nucleon to extract the ANC for 13O -> 12N + p and calculate from it the direct component of the astrophysical S factor of the 12N(p,gamma)13O reaction. The optical potentials used and the DWBA analysis of the proton transfer reaction are discussed. For the entrance channel, the optical potential was inferred from an elastic scattering measurement carried out at the same time with the transfer measurement. From the transfer, we determined the square of the ANC, C^2(13Og.s.) = 2.53 +/- 0.30 fm-1, and hence a value of 0.33(4) keVb was obtained for the direct astrophysical S factor at zero energy. Constructive interference at low energies between the direct and resonant captures leads to an enhancement of Stotal(0) = 0.42(5) keVb. The 12N(p,gamma)13O reaction was investigated in relation to the evolution of hydrogen-rich massive Population III stars, for the role that it may play in the hot pp-chain nuclear burning processes, possibly occurring in such objects.

We discuss the use of one-nucleon breakup reactions of loosely bound nuclei at intermediate energies as an indirect method in nuclear astrophysics. These are peripheral processes, therefore we can extract asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANC) from which reaction rates of astrophysical interest can be inferred. To show the usefulness of the method, three different cases are discussed. In the first, existing experimental data for the breakup of 8B at energies from 30 to 1000 MeV/u and of 9C at 285 MeV/u on light through heavy targets are analyzed. Glauber model calculations in the eikonal approximation and in the optical limit using different effective interactions give consistent, though slightly different results, showing the limits of the precision of the method. The results lead to the astrophysical factor S_17(0)=18.7+/-1.9 eVb for the key reaction for solar neutrino production 7Be(p,γ)8B. It is consistent with the values from other indirect methods and most direct measurements, but one. Breakup reactions can be measured with radioactive beams as weak as a few particles per second, and therefore can be used for cases where no direct measurements or other indirect methods for nuclear astrophysics can be applied. We discuss a proposed use of the breakup of the proton drip line nucleus 23Al to obtain spectroscopic information and the stellar reaction rate for 22Mg(p,γ)23Al.

The measurements allowed us to check and improve the optical model potentials used in the incoming and outgoing channels for the analysis of existing data on the proton transfer reaction $^{14}$N($^{7}$Be,$^{8}$B)$^{13}$C. The resultslead to an updated determination of the asymptotic normalization coefficient for the virtual decay $^{8}$B $\to$ $^{7}$Be + $p$. We find a slightly larger value, $C_{tot}^{2}(^{8}B)=0.466\pm 0.047$ fm$^{-1}$, for the melamine target. This implies an astrophysical factor, $S_{17}(0)=18.0\pm 1.8$ eV$\cdot$b, for the solar neutrino generating reaction $^{7}$Be($p$,$γ$)$^{8}$B.

The strong absorption model reproduces the $A$-dependence of $σ_R$, but not the detailed structure. Glauber multiple scattering theory and the JLM folding model provided improved descriptions of the measured $σ_R$ values. $rms$ radii, extracted from the measured $σ_R$ using the optical limit of Glauber theory, are in good agreement with those obtained from high energy data. One-proton removal reactions are described using an extended Glauber model, incorporating second order noneikonal corrections, realistic single particle densities, and spectroscopic factors from shell model calculations.

A model based on the sudden approximation has been developed to describe high energy single nucleon removal reactions. Within this approach, which takes as its starting point the formalism of Hansen \cite{Anne2}, the nucleon-removal cross section and the full 3-dimensional momentum distributions of the core fragments including absorption, diffraction, Coulomb and nuclear-Coulomb interference amplitudes, have been calculated. The Coulomb breakup has been treated to all orders for the dipole interaction. The model has been compared to experimental data for a range of light, neutron-rich psd-shell nuclei. Good agreement was found for both the inclusive cross sections and momentum distributions. In the case of $^{17}$C, comparison is also made with the results of calculations using the transfer-to-the-continuum model. The calculated 3-dimensional momentum distributions exhibit longitudinal and transverse momentum components that are strongly coupled by the reaction for s-wave states, whilst no such effect is apparent for d-waves. Incomplete detection of transverse momenta arising fromlimited experimental acceptances thus leads to a narrowing of the longitudinal distributions for nuclei with significant s-wave valence neutron configurations, as confirmed by the data. Asymmetries in the longitudinal momentum distributions attributed to diffractive dissociation are also explored.

With the determination of unambiguous optical potentials in mind, elastic data for four projectile-target combinations and one neutron transfer reaction 13C(7Li,8Li)12C have been measured on a large angular range. The kinematical regime encompasses a region where the mean field (optical potential) has a marked variation with mass and energy, but turns out to be sufficiently surface transparent to allow strong refractive effects to be manifested in elastic scattering data at intermediate angles. The identified exotic feature, a "plateau" in the angular distributions at intermediate angles, is fully confirmed in four reaction channels and interpreted as a pre-rainbow oscillation resulting from the interference of the barrier and internal barrier farside scattering subamplitudes.

Existing experimental data for the breakup of 8B at energies from 30 to 1000 MeV/nucleon on light through heavy targets are analyzed in detail in terms of an extended Glauber model. The predictions of the model are in excellent agreement with independent reaction data (reaction cross sections and parallel momentum distributions for core like fragments). Final state interactions have been included in the Coulomb dissociation component. We extract asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANC) from which the strophysical factor S17(0) for the key reaction for solar neutrino production, 7Be(p,gamma)8B, can be evaluated. Glauber model calculations using different effective interactions give consistent, though slightly different results. The differences give a measure of the precision one can expect from the method. The unweighted average of all ANCs extracted leads to S17(0)=18.7+/-1.9 eVb. The results of this new analysis are compared with the earlier one. They are consistent with the values from most direct measurements and other indirect methods.

A study of high energy (43--68 MeV/nucleon) one-neutron removal reactions on a range of neutron-rich psd-shell nuclei (Z = 5--9, A = 12--25) has been undertaken. The inclusive longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions for the core fragments, together with the cross sections have been measured for breakup on a carbon target. Momentum distributions for reactions on tantalum were also measured for a subset of nuclei. An extended version of the Glauber model incorporating second order noneikonal corrections to the JLM parametrisation of the optical potential has been used to describe the nuclear breakup, whilst the Coulomb dissociation is treated within first order perturbation theory. The projectile structure has been taken into account via shell model calculations employing the psd-interaction of Warburton and Brown. Both the longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions, together with the integrated cross sections were well reproduced by these calculations and spin-parity assignments are thus proposed for $^{15}$B, $^{17}$C, $^{19-21}$N, $^{21,23}$O, $^{23-25}$F. In addition to the large spectroscopic amplitudes for the $\nu2$s$_{1/2}$ intruder configuration in the N=9 isotones,$^{14}$B and $^{15}$C, significant $\nu2$s$_{1/2}^2$ admixtures appear to occur in the ground state of the neighbouring N=10 nuclei $^{15}$B and $^{16}$C. Similarly, crossing the N=14 subshell, the occupation of the $\nu2$s$_{1/2}$ orbital is observed for $^{23}$O, $^{24,25}$F. Analysis of the longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions reveals that both carry spectroscopic information, often of a complementary nature. The general utility of high energy nucleon removal reactions as a spectroscopic tool is also examined.

We have also separated the contributions from the p_1/2 and p_3/2 components in the transfer. We find the astrophysical factor for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction to be S_17(0)=17.6+/-1.7 eVb. This is the first time that the rate of a direct capture reaction of astrophysical interest has been determined through a measurement of the ANCs in the mirror system.

We have used existing data on the one-proton-removal cross section of 9C at 285 MeV/u and Glauber model calculations to extract the asymptotic normalization coefficient for the wave function of the last proton in the ground state of 9C. The calculations are done first using folded potentials starting from two different effective nucleon-nucleon interactions and second in the optical limit using three nucleon-nucleon interactions, and the results are found to be consistent, with no new parameters adjusted. We find C^2(p3/2)+C^2(p1/2)=1.22+/- fm-1. From this result we obtain the astrophysical factor for the proton radiative capture reaction 8B(p,gamma)9C as S_18(0)=46+/-6 eVb. The calculated energy dependence of the astrophysical S-factor for the energy region Ecm=0-0.8 MeV and the reaction rates for T_9=0-1 are included. The optical potential of halo and weakly bound nuclei has a long range part due to the coupling to breakup that damps the elastic scattering angular distributions at all angles for which the effect of the nuclear interaction is felt. In charge exchange reactions leading to a final state with a halo nucleus, the surface potential is responsible for a strong reduction in the absolute cross section. We show how the halo effect can be simply estimated semiclassically and related to the properties of the halo wave function. Assuming an exponential tail for the imaginary surface potential we show that the most important parameter is the diffusness $α$ of the potential which is directly related to the decay length $γ_i$ of the initial wave function by $α\approx(2γ_i)^{-1}$

The procedure described here is more general, providing an indirect method to determine reaction rates of astrophysical interest with beams of loosely bound radioactive nuclei.

The longitudinal momentum distributions of the core fragments and corresponding single-neutron removal cross sections are reported for reactions on a carbon target. Extended Glauber model calculations, weighted by the spectroscopic factors obtained from shell model calculations, are compared to the experimental results. Conclusions are drawn regarding the use of such reactions as a spectroscopic tool and spin-parity assignments are proposed for 15B, 17C, 19-21N, 21,23O, 23-25F. The nature of the weakly bound systems 14B and 15,17C is discussed.

We present the results of a search for optical model potentials for use in the description of elastic scattering and transfer reactions involving stable and radioactive p-shell nuclei. This was done in connection with our program to use transfer reactions to obtain data for nuclear astrophysics, in particular for the determination of the astrophysical S_17 factor for 7Be(p,γ)8B using two (7Be,8B) proton transfer reactions. Elastic scattering was measured using 7Li, 10B, 13C and 14N projectiles on 9Be and 13C targets at or about E/A=10 MeV/nucleon. Woods-Saxon type optical model potentials were extracted and are compared with potentials obtained from a microscopic double folding model. We use these results to find optical model potentials for unstable nuclei with emphasis on the reliability of the description they provide for peripheral proton transfer reactions. We discuss the uncertainty introduced by the procedure in the prediction of the DWBA cross sections for the (7Be,8B) reactions used in extracting the astrophysical factor S_17(0).

We compute the final kinetic energies of the fragments emitted in the light charged particle accompanied cold fission of $^{252}$Cf taking into account the ground state quadrupole deformation and the finite-size effects of the fragments and integrating the equations of motion for a three-body system subjected only to Coulomb forces. The initial conditions for the trajectory calculations were derived in the frame of a deformed cluster model which includes also the effect due to the absorbative nuclear part. Although the distributions of initial kinetic energies is rather broad we show that in cold fission the initial conditions can be better determined than in the usual spontaneous fission.

A new type of decay corresponding to the neutronless $^{10}$Be-accompanied fragmentation of $^{252}$Cf is studied. We employ a cluster model similar to the model used for the description of cluster radioactivity.
No preformation factors were considered.
The ternary relative isotopic yields were calculated as the ratio of the penetrability of a given ternary fragmentation over the sum of penetrabilities of all possible ternary neutronless fragmentations. The corresponding barriers between the light and heavy fragment and between the $^{10}$Be cluster and the two heavier fragments were computed with the help of a double folding potential generated by M3Y-$NN$ effective interaction and realistic fragment ground state deformations.
Also, we studied the influence of the fragment excitation energies on the yields, by including the level densities and the
$β$-stretching of the fragments.
The new phenomenon could be experimentally observed by the triple gamma coincidence technique between the fragments and $^{10}$Be.

We study the binary cold fission of $^{252}$Cf in the frame of a cluster model where the fragments are born to their respective ground states and interact via a double-folded potential with deformation effects taken into account up to multipolarity $λ=4$. The preformation factors were neglected. In the case when the fragments are assumed to be spherical or with ground state quadrupole deformation, the $Q$-value principle dictates the occurence of a narrow region around the double magic $^{132}$Sn, like in the case of cluster radioactivity. When the hexadecupole deformation is turned on, an entire mass-region of cold fission in the range 138 - 156 for the heavy fragment arise, in agreement with the experimental observations.
This fact suggests that in the above mentioned mass-region, contrary to the usual cluster radioactivity where the daughter nucleus is always a neutron/proton (or both) closed shell or nearly closed shell spherical nucleus, the clusterization mechanism seems to be strongly influenced by the hexadecupole deformations rather than the $Q$-value.
