Accelerated muon beams have been considered for next-generation studies of high-energy lepton-antilepton collisions and neutrino oscillations. However, high-brightness muon beams have not yet been produced. The main challenge for muon acceleration and storage stems from the large phase-space volume occupied by the beam, derived from the muon production mechanism through the decay of pions from proton collisions. Ionization cooling is the technique proposed to decrease the muon beam phase-space volume. Here we demonstrate a clear signal of ionization cooling through the observation of transverse emittance reduction in beams that traverse lithium hydride or liquid hydrogen absorbers in the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE). The measurement is well reproduced by the simulation of the experiment and the theoretical model. The results shown here represent a substantial advance towards the realization of muon-based facilities that could operate at the energy and intensity frontiers.

Multiple Coulomb Scattering (MCS) is a well known phenomenon occurring when charged particles traverse materials. Measurements of muons traversing low $Z$ materials made in the MuScat experiment showed that theoretical models and simulation codes, such as GEANT4 (v7.0), over-estimated the scattering. The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) measured the cooling of a muon beam traversing a liquid hydrogen or lithium hydride (LiH) energy absorber as part of a programme to develop muon accelerator facilities, such as a Neutrino Factory or a Muon Collider. The energy loss and MCS that occur in the absorber material are competing effects that alter the performance of the cooling channel. Therefore measurements of MCS are required in order to validate the simulations used to predict the cooling performance in future accelerator facilities. We report measurements made in the MICE apparatus of MCS using a LiH absorber and muons within the momentum range 160 to 245 MeV/c. The measured RMS scattering width is about 9% smaller than that predicted by the approximate formula proposed by the Particle Data Group. Data at 172, 200 and 240 MeV/c are compared to the GEANT4 (v9.6) default scattering model. These measurements show agreement with this more recent GEANT4 (v9.6) version over the range of incident muon momenta.

Abstract:
We study Seifert linking form which is an invariant of embeddings of punctured $n$-manifolds in $\mathbb R^{2n-1}$. For punctured $n$-manifold $N_0$ the values of this invariant are integer valued bilinear symmetric forms on $H_{n-1}(N_0;\mathbb Z)$. We also prove that any such form can be realized by some embedding $N_0\to\mathbb R^{2n-1}$. To evaluate the role of Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) on Northern Hemisphere (NH) surface air temperature trends it is important to have reliable estimates of both quantities. 16 different TSI estimates were compiled from the literature. 1/2 of these estimates are low variability and 1/2 are high variability. 5 largely-independent methods for estimating NH temperature trends were evaluated using: 1) only rural weather stations; 2) all available stations whether urban or rural (the standard approach); 3) only sea surface temperatures; 4) tree-ring temperature proxies; 5) glacier length temperature proxies. The standard estimates using urban as well as rural stations were anomalous as they implied a much greater warming in recent decades than the other estimates. This suggests urbanization bias might still be a problem in current global temperature datasets despite the conclusions of some earlier studies. Still, all 5 estimates confirm it is currently warmer than the late 19th century, i.e., there has been some global warming since 1850. For the 5 estimates of NH temperatures, the contribution from direct solar forcing for all 16 estimates of TSI was evaluated using simple linear least-squares fitting. The role of human activity in recent warming was then calculated by fitting the residuals to the UN IPCC's recommended anthropogenic forcings time series. For all 5 NH temperature series, different TSI estimates implied everything from recent global warming being mostly human-caused to it being mostly natural. It seems previous studies (including the most recent IPCC reports) that had prematurely concluded the former failed to adequately consider all the relevant estimates of TSI and/or to satisfactorily address the uncertainties still associated with NH temperature trend estimates. Several recommendations are provided on how future research could more satisfactorily resolve these issues.

As known, the degree of entanglement of biphoton states with respect to the transverse components of photon wave vectors (momenta) or coordinates can be characterized either by the parameter K associated with the Schmidt decompositions, or by the parameter R, defined as the ratio of the widths of the unconditional and conditional single-particle distributions of biphoton states. As entanglement is a fundamental characteristics of a state, it must be independent of a choice of its different representations, i.e. its entanglement parameters must be identical in the coordinate and momentum representations. Likewise, entanglement itself and its characterization parameters must remain constant along the photon propagation length. It's known, however, that only the parameter K obeys these requirements, whereas the parameter R in the coordinate representation deviates from K beyond the near zone and, thus, becomes inapplicable as a measure of the degree of entablement. But, as shown below, there is a way of saving the parameter R by means of modifying its definition in such a way that the modified parameter R turns out to be as good as the parameter K both in the momentum and coordinate representations, as well as in the near and far zones and everywhere between them. We will discuss also possible ways of measuring this newly defined parameter R experimentally.

Neural Architecture Search (NAS) is a promising and rapidly evolving research area. Training a large number of neural networks requires an exceptional amount of computational power, which makes NAS unreachable for those researchers who have limited or no access to high-performance clusters and supercomputers. A few benchmarks with precomputed neural architectures performances have been recently introduced to overcome this problem and ensure more reproducible experiments. However, these benchmarks are only for the computer vision domain and, thus, are built from the image datasets and convolution-derived architectures. In this work, we step outside the computer vision domain by leveraging the language modeling task, which is the core of natural language processing (NLP). Our main contribution is as follows: we have provided search space of recurrent neural networks on the text datasets and trained 14k architectures within it; we have conducted both intrinsic and extrinsic evaluation of the trained models using datasets for semantic relatedness and language understanding evaluation; finally, we have tested several NAS algorithms to demonstrate how the precomputed results can be utilized. We believe that our results have high potential of usage for both NAS and NLP communities.

Molecular dynamics simulations are essential for better understanding the complex phenomena occurring at the electrode-IL interface. In this work, we have studied the interface between graphene and 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate IL, using density functional theory-based molecular dynamics simulations at variable surface charge densities. We have disassembled the electrical double layer potential drop into two main components: one involving atomic charges and the other - dipoles. The latter component arises due to the electronic polarisation of the surface and is related to concepts hotly debated in the literature, such as the Thomas-Fermi screening length, effective surface charge plane, and quantum capacitance.

The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) collaboration has developed the MICE Analysis User Software (MAUS) to simulate and analyze experimental data. It serves as the primary codebase for the experiment, providing for offline batch simulation and reconstruction as well as online data quality checks. The software provides both traditional particle-physics functionalities such as track reconstruction and particle identification, and accelerator physics functions, such as calculating transfer matrices and emittances. The code design is object orientated, but has a top-level structure based on the Map-Reduce model. This allows for parallelization to support live data reconstruction during data-taking operations. MAUS allows users to develop in either Python or C++ and provides APIs for both. Various software engineering practices from industry are also used to ensure correct and maintainable code, including style, unit and integration tests, continuous integration and load testing, code reviews, and distributed version control. We consider regimes of Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion both noncollinear and nondegenerate in frequencies. Parameters characterizing degrees of noncollinearity and of nondgeneracy are defined, and they are shown to be not independent of each other. At a given degree of nondegeneracy the emitted photons are shown to propagate along two different cones opening angles of which are determined by the degree of nondegeneracy. Based on this, the degree of nondegeneracy can be controlled by means of the angular selection of photons, e.g., with the help of appropriately installed slits. For such selected photons their wave functions are found depending on two frequency or on two temporal variables. Interference effects arising in such states are tested by analyzes of the Hong-Ou-Mandel type scheme with the varying delay time in one of two channels and with photons from two channels sent to the beamsplitter. The temporal pictures arising after the beamsplitter are found to demonstrate extremely strong interference exhibiting itself in formation of finite-size temporal combs filled with quantum beats. Parameters of combs depend on the degree of nondegeneracy, and the physical reasons of this dependence are clarified.

The well-known Hong-Ou-Mandel effect is revisited. Two physical reasons are discussed for the effect to be less pronounced or even to disappear: differing polarizations of photons coming to the beamsplitter and delay time of photons in one of two channels. For the latter we use the concepts of biphoton frequency and temporal wave functions depending, correspondingly, on two frequency continuous variables of photons and on two time variables $t_1$ and $t_2$ interpreted as the arrival times of photons to the beamsplitter. Explicit expressions are found for the probability densities and total probabilities for photon pairs to be split between two channels after the beamsplitter and to be unsplit, when two photons appear together in one of two channels.

Related to this, the degree of entanglement appears to be very high and, in fact, this is the same enormous resource of azimuthal entanglement which was found to occur in the formalism of spherical angles used for characterization of photon wave vectors (Phys. Rev. A, {\bf 93}, 033830, 2016). In Cartesian variables this phenomenon manifests itself as a strong broadening and a very unusual and peculiar shape of the arising single-particle distribution curves. In theory, the key reason for these effects is the reduction of the total wave function of two photons over one of two orthogonal degrees of freedom. In the suggested and discussed experimental scheme this means that all photons of the emission cone have to be taken into account rather than only photons propagating in one given plane which is a common practice in many experiments.

We analyze the origins of the luminescence in germania-silica fibers with high germanium concentration (about 30 mol. % GeO2) in the region 1-2 μm with a laser pump at the wavelength 532 nm. We show that such fibers demonstrate the high level of luminescence which unlikely allows the observation of photon triplets, generated in a third-order spontaneous parametric down-conversion process in such fibers. The only efficient approach to the luminescence reduction is the hydrogen saturation of fiber samples, however, even in this case the level of residual luminescence is still too high for three-photon registration.

The Tunka-Radio extension (Tunka-Rex) is a radio detector for air showers in Siberia. From 2012 to 2014, Tunka-Rex operated exclusively together with its host experiment, the air-Cherenkov array Tunka-133, which provided trigger, data acquisition, and an independent air-shower reconstruction. It was shown that the air-shower energy can be reconstructed by Tunka-Rex with a precision of 15\% for events with signal in at least 3 antennas, using the radio amplitude at a distance of 120\,m from the shower axis as an energy estimator. Using the reconstruction from the host experiment Tunka-133 for the air-shower geometry (shower core and direction), the energy estimator can in principle already be obtained with measurements from a single antenna, close to the reference distance. We present a method for event selection and energy reconstruction, requiring only one antenna, and achieving a precision of about 20\%. This method increases the effective detector area and lowers thresholds for zenith angle and energy, resulting in three times more events than in the standard reconstruction.

This work describes the behaviour of water molecules in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid under nanoconfinement between graphene sheets. By means of molecular dynamics simulations, an adsorption of water molecules at the graphene surface is studied. A depletion of water molecules in the vicinity of the neutral and negatively charged graphene surfaces and their adsorption at the positively charged surface are observed in line with the preferential hydration of the ionic liquid anions. The findings are appropriately described using a two-level statistical model. The confinement effect on the structure and dynamics of the mixtures is thoroughly analyzed using the density and the potential of mean force profiles, as well as by the vibrational densities of states of water molecules near the graphene surface. The orientation of water molecules and the water-induced structural transitions in the layer closest to the graphene surface are also discussed.

A simple method is suggested for factorizing the state vector and the explicit expressions for the factorizing photon creation operators are found. The degrees of entanglement and polarization of a qutrit are shown to depend directly on the commutation features of the factorizing operators. Clear graphic representations for the Stokes vectors of the qutrit state as a whole, its Schmidt modes, and factorizing single-photon creation operators are given, based on the Poincaré sphere. An experimental scheme is proposed for measuring the parameters of the Schmidt decomposition as well as for demonstrating the operational meaning of qutrit entanglement.

If in experiments one uses only polarization measurements, the originally pure states of ququarts can be seen as mixed biphoton polarization states. We analyze features of mixed biphoton polarization states which arise from pure states of polarization-frequency biphoton ququarts after averaging over frequencies of photons. For mixed states we find their concurrence C, Schmidt parameter K and degree of polarization P, as well as the von Neumann mutual information I. In some simple cases we find also the relative entropy S_{rel} and the degree of classical correlations C_{cl}. We show that in mixed states the Schmidt parameter does not characterize anymore the degree of entanglement, as it does in pure states. Nevertheless, the Schmidt parameter remains useful even in the case of mixed states because it remains directly related to the degree of polarization. We compare results occurring in the cases of full pure polarization-frequency states of ququarts, mixed states (averaged over frequencies) and states with separated high- and low-frequency parts. Differences between these results can be seen in experiments with and without a dichroic beam-splitter, as well as with and without frequency filters in front of detector.

We investigate in a general form entanglement of biphoton qutrits and ququarts, i.e. states formed in the processes of collinear and, correspondingly, degenerate and non-degenerate Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion. Indistinguishability of photons and, for ququarts, joint presence of the frequency and and polarization entanglement are fully taken into account. In the case of qutrits the most general 3-parametric families of maximally entangled and non-entangled states are found, and anti-correlation of the degree of entanglement and polarization is shown to occur and to be characterized by a rather simple formula. Biphoton ququarts are shown to be two-qudits with the single-photon Hilbert space dimensionality $d=4$, which differs them significantly from the often used two-qubit model ($d=2$). New expressions for entanglement quantifiers of biphoton ququarts are derived and discussed. Rather simple procedures for a direct measurement of the degree of entanglement are described for both qutrits and ququarts.

Spectral and temporal coincidence and single-particle photon wave packets are described and their widths and durations are found. The degree of entanglement is characterized by the experimentally measurable parameter R defined as the ratio of the coincidence and single-particle spectral widths. In the frequency representation, this parameter is found as a function of the pump-pulse duration. This function is shown to have a minimum and even in the minimum, at rather natural conditions, the parameter R is found to be very high (R=73>>1). The Schmidt number K is found for both short and long pump pulses and interpolated for arbitrary pulse durations. All functional dependences of R and K are found to be identical and numerical difference between them is shown to be not exceeding 20%. Two-time temporal wave function of a biphoton state is investigated in details, and a rather significant difference between the cases of short and long pump pulses is found to occur. In the case of long pulses, the temporal parameter R is defined as the ratio of durations of the single-particle and coincidence signals, and the defined in such a way parameter R is shown to be very close to the Schmidt number K.

Its anisotropic features manifest themselves very clearly in comparison of measurements performed in two different schemes: when the detector scanning plane is perpendicular or parallel to the plane containing the crystal optical axis and the laser axis. The first of these two schemes is traditional whereas the second one gives rise to such unexpected new results as anomalously strong narrowing of the biphoton wave packet measured in the coincidence scheme and very high degree of entanglement. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a method to prepare a nonspreading atomic wave packet. Our technique relies on a spatially modulated absorption constantly chiseling away from an initially broad de Broglie wave. The resulting contraction is balanced by dispersion due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. This quantum evolution results in the formation of a nonspreading wave packet of Gaussian form with a spatially quadratic phase. Experimentally, we confirm these predictions by observing the evolution of the momentum distribution. Moreover, by employing interferometric techniques, we measure the predicted quadratic phase across the wave packet. Nonspreading wave packets of this kind also exist in two space dimensions and we can control their amplitude and phase using optical elements.

Spontaneous emission of a photon by an atom is described theoretically in three dimensions with the initial wave function of a finite-mass atom taken in the form of a finite-size wave packet. Recoil and wave-packet spreading are taken into account. The total atom-photon wave function is found in the momentum and coordinate representations as the solution of an initial-value problem. The atom-photon entanglement arising in such a process is shown to be closely related to the structure of atom and photon wave packets which can be measured in the coincidence and single-particle schemes of measurements. Two predicted effects, arising under the conditions of high entanglement, are anomalous narrowing of the coincidence wave packets and, under different conditions, anomalous broadening of the single-particle wave packets. Fundamental symmetry relations between the photon and atom single-particle and coincidence wave packet widths are established. The relationship with the famous scenario of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen is discussed.
