We investigate a promising conformal field theory realization scheme for topological quantum computation based on the Fibonacci anyons, which are believed to be realized as quasiparticle excitations in the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion fractional quantum Hall state in the second Landau level with filling factor $ν=12/5$. These anyons are non-Abelian and are known to be capable of universal topological quantum computation. The quantum information is encoded in the fusion channels of pairs of such non-Abelian anyons and is protected from noise and decoherence by the topological properties of these systems. The quantum gates are realized by braiding of these anyons. We propose here an implementation of the $n$-qubit topological quantum register in terms of $2n+2$ Fibonacci anyons. The matrices emerging from the anyon exchanges, i.e. the generators of the braid group for one qubit are derived from the coordinate wave functions of a large number of electron holes and 4 Fibonacci anyons which can furthermore be represented as correlation functions in $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermionic two-dimensional conformal field theory. The representations of the braid groups for more than 4 anyons are obtained by fusing pairs of anyons before braiding, thus reducing eventually the system to 4 anyons.

Fibonacci anyons provide the simplest possible model of non-Abelian fusion rules: [1] x [1] = [0] + [1]. We propose a conformal field theory construction of topological quantum registers based on Fibonacci anyons realized as quasiparticle excitations in the Z_3 parafermion fractional quantum Hall state. To this end, the results of Ardonne and Schoutens for the correlation function of n = 4 Fibonacci fields are extended to the case of arbitrary n (and 3 r electrons). Special attention is paid to the braiding properties of the obtained correlators. We explain in details the construction of a monodromy representation of the Artin braid group acting on n-point conformal blocks of Fibonacci anyons. For low n (up to n = 8), the matrices of braid group generators are displayed explicitly. A simple recursion formula makes it possible to extend without efforts the construction to any n. Finally, we construct N qubit computational spaces in terms of conformal blocks of 2N + 2 Fibonacci anyons.

We study its magnetic activity in the context of stellar evolution, and for this purpose, we also refined its evolutionary status and Li abundance. In general, for the M giants, little is known about the properties of the magnetic activity and its causes. RZ~Ari posses the strongest surface magnetic field of the known Zeeman-detected M giants and is bright enough to allow a deep study of its surface magnetic structure. The results are expected to shed light on the activity mechanism in these stars.

The integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into shared airspace for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations presents significant challenges but holds transformative potential for sectors like transportation, construction, energy and defense. A critical prerequisite for this integration is equipping UAVs with enhanced situational awareness to ensure safe operations. Current approaches mainly target single object detection or classification, or simpler sensing outputs that offer limited perceptual understanding and lack the rapid end-to-end processing needed to convert sensor data into safety-critical insights. In contrast, our study leverages radar technology for novel end-to-end semantic segmentation of aerial point clouds to simultaneously identify multiple collision hazards. By adapting and optimizing the PointNet architecture and integrating aerial domain insights, our framework distinguishes five distinct classes: mobile drones (DJI M300 and DJI Mini) and airplanes (Ikarus C42), and static returns (ground and infrastructure) which results in enhanced situational awareness for UAVs. To our knowledge, this is the first approach addressing simultaneous identification of multiple collision threats in an aerial setting, achieving a robust 94% accuracy. This work highlights the potential of radar technology to advance situational awareness in UAVs, facilitating safe and efficient BVLOS operations.

Our investigation is based on the longest spectropolarimetric survey ever performed on this variable star. The analysis of high resolution spectra and circular polarization data give sharp information on the dynamics of the atmosphere and the surface magnetism, respectively. Our analysis shows that surface magnetic field can be detected at different phases along a pulsating cycle, and that it may be related to the presence of a radiative shock wave periodically emerging out of the photosphere and propagating throughout the stellar atmosphere.

We consider small nonlinear perturbations of linear systems on a time scale with the phase space being finite or infinite-dimensional. For $Δ$-differential operators, corresponding to linear dynamic systems we consider their solvability in various functional spaces. Based on these techniques, we prove several results on the existence of a bounded solution for some systems with small nonlinearities. Thus we introduce some generalizations of the classic hyperbolicity property (exponential dichotomy) for systems of ordinary differential equations.
Besides, we introduce the Lyapunov regularity condition that coincides with the classic one for ordinary differential equations. For regular systems, we prove some criteria for the existence of bounded solutions of perturbed systems.

Aims. We seek to understand convection in red supergiants and the mechanisms that trigger the mass loss from cool evolved stars. Methods. Linear spectropolarimetry of the atomic lines of the spectrum of $μ$ Cep reveals information well outside the wavelength range expected from previous models. This is interpreted as structures in expansion that are visible in the front hemisphere and sometimes also in the back hemisphere. We model the plasma distribution together with its associated velocities through an inversion algorithm to fit the observed linear polarization. Results. We find that supposing the existence of plasma beyond the limb rising high enough to be visible above it can explain the observed linear polarization signatures as well as their evolution in time. From this we are able to infer the geometric heights of the convective plumes and establish that this hot plasma rises to at least 1.1 R*. Conclusions. $μ$ Cep appears to be in an active phase in which plasma rises often above 1.1 R* . We generalize this result to all red supergiants in a similarly evolved stage, which at certain epochs may easily send plasma to greater heights, as $μ$ Cep appears to be doing at present. Plasma rising to such heights can easily escape the stellar gravity.

Understanding convection in red supergiants and the mechanisms that trigger the mass loss from these evolved stars are the general goals of most observations of Betelgeuse and its inner circumstellar environment. Linear spectropolarimetry of the atomic lines of the spectrum of Betelgeuse reveals information about the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of brightness in its atmosphere. We model the distribution of plasma and its velocities and use inversion algorithms to fit the observed linear polarization. We obtain the first 3D images of the photosphere of Betelgeuse. Within the limits of the used approximations, we recover vertical convective flows and measure the velocity of the rising plasma at different heights in the photosphere. In several cases, we find this velocity to be constant with height, indicating the presence of forces other than gravity acting on the plasma and counteracting it. In some cases, these forces are sufficient to maintain plasma rising at 60\,\kms to heights where this velocity is comparable to the escape velocity. Forces are present in the photosphere of Betelgeuse that allow plasma to reach velocities close to the escape velocity. These mechanisms may suffice to trigger mass loss and sustain the observed large stellar winds of these evolved stars.

We present a spectral study of the single magnetically active K giant OP And in the period 1979 -- 2018, monitoring the variability of the activity indicator line H$α$. Original data obtained in the period 2015 -- 2018 with the echelle spectrograph ESpeRo at the 2m telescope of the National Astronomical Observatory Rozhen in Bulgaria, previously unpublished original data obtained in the period 1997 -- 2007 and on one night in 2013 with the Coude spectrograph at the same telescope, as well as data from the literature are presented in this study. The variability of the H$α$ line reveals that the activity level of OP And is higher in the period 1993 -- 2000, while during the period 2008 -- 2010 it is lower, possibly close to a minimum. Also, our data for the period 2015 -- 2018 show that the activity level is increasing again. Spectral observations of the activity indicators CaII H&K lines and CaII IR triplet are sparse during the studied period. We use such ones when possible to confirm the detection of some flare events. The structure of H$α$ changes with the activity level: when the activity is higher, we observe a blue-shifted component of this line, interpreted as an expanding area above the photosphere, but during a lower activity period it is almost absent. Our results are in a good agreement with the idea that the magnetic field controls the mass outflow in this giant. More years of observations are necessary to determine the eventual activity cycle of OP And.

Training datasets are often constructed over a fixed period of time and by carefully curating the data to be labeled. Thus, training datasets may not contain all possible variations of data that could be encountered in real-world production environments. Tasked with building an entity resolution system - a model that identifies and consolidates data points that represent the same person - our first model exhibited a clear training-production performance gap. In this case study, we discuss our human-in-the-loop enabled, data-centric solution to closing the training-production performance divergence. This precise neutral-part parafermion $S$ matrix is derived from the explicit relations between the coset matrix and those for the numerator and denominator of the coset and the latter is expressed in compact form due to the level--rank duality between the affine Lie algebras $\widehat{su(k)_2}$ and $\widehat{su(2)_k}$. The exact results obtained for the $S$ matrix elements are expected to play an important role for identifying interference patterns of fractional quantum Hall states in Fabry-Pérot interferometers which can be used to distinguish between Abelian and non-Abelian statistics of quasiparticles localized in the bulk of fractional quantum Hall droplets as well as for nondestructive interference measurement of Fibonacci anyons which can be used for universal topological quantum computation.

We review the general strategy of topologically protected quantum information processing based on non-Abelian anyons, in which quantum information is encoded into the fusion channels of pairs of anyons and in fusion paths for multi-anyon states, realized in two-dimensional fractional quantum Hall systems. The quantum gates which are needed for the quantum information processing in these multi-qubit registers are implemented by exchange or braiding of the non-Abelian anyons that are at fixed positions in two-dimensional coordinate space. As an example we consider the Pfaffian topological quantum computer based on the fractional quantum Hall state with filling factor $ν_H=5/2$. The elementary qubits are constructed by localizing Ising anyons on fractional quantum Hall antidots and various quantum gates, such as the Hadamard gate, phase gates and CNOT, are explicitly realized by braiding. We also discuss the appropriate experimental signatures which could eventually be used to detect non-Abelian anyons in Coulomb blockaded quantum Hall islands.

Using the explicit rational conformal field theory partition functions for the ${\mathbb Z}_k$ parafermion quantum Hall states on a disk we compute numerically the thermoelectric power factor for Coulomb-blockaded islands at finite temperature. We demonstrate that the power factor is rather sensitive to the neutral degrees of freedom and could eventually be used to distinguish experimentally between different quantum Hall states having identical electric properties. Using the conformal field theory approach to the thermoelectric characteristics of fractional quantum Hall states, previously developed in Nucl. Phys. B 894 (2015) 284, we show that the thermoelectric power factor of Coulomb-blockaded islands, realized by point contacts in Fabry--Pérot interferometers in the $\mathbb{Z}_k$ parafermion Hall states, could give reliable signatures for distinguishing the topological orders of different quantum Hall states having identical electric properties. For example, while the conductance peak patterns in the Coulomb blockade regime for such states are practically indistinguishable for $v_n \ll v_c$ even at finite temperature, where $v_n$ and $v_c$ are the Fermi velocities of the neutral and charged modes respectively, the power factors $\mathcal{P}_T$ of the corresponding states are much more sensitive to the neutral modes. In particular, the smaller $r=v_n/v_c$ the bigger the asymmetries in the power factor which combined with the thermal broadening of the conductance peaks due to the neutral modes' multiplicities could give us the ultimate tool to figure out which of the competing quantum Hall universality classes are indeed realized in the experiments. We give a complete description of the power factor profiles in the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ parafermion states with arbitrary number of quasiparticles localized in the bulk which could be useful for comparison with the experiments.

The scalability of statistical estimators is of increasing importance in modern applications. One approach to implementing scalable algorithms is to compress data into a low dimensional latent space using dimension reduction methods. In this paper we develop an approach for dimension reduction that exploits the assumption of low rank structure in high dimensional data to gain both computational and statistical advantages. We adapt recent randomized low-rank approximation algorithms to provide an efficient solution to principal component analysis (PCA), and we use this efficient solver to improve parameter estimation in large-scale linear mixed models (LMM) for association mapping in statistical and quantitative genomics. A key observation in this paper is that randomization serves a dual role, improving both computational and statistical performance by implicitly regularizing the covariance matrix estimate of the random effect in a LMM. These statistical and computational advantages are highlighted in our experiments on simulated data and large-scale genomic studies.

We show that it is possible and rather efficient to compute at non-zero temperature the thermoelectric characteristics of Coulomb blockaded fractional quantum Hall islands, formed by two quantum point contacts inside of a Fabry-Perot interferometer, using the conformal field theory partition functions for the chiral edge excitations. The oscillations of the thermopower with the variation of the gate voltage as well as the corresponding figure-of-merit and power factors, provide finer spectroscopic tools which are sensitive to the neutral multiplicities in the partition functions and could be used to distinguish experimentally between different universality classes. We also propose a procedure for measuring the ratio r=v_n/v_c of the Fermi velocities of the neutral and charged edge modes for filling factor ν=5/2 from the power-factor data in the low-temperature limit.

We demonstrate that the differential magnetic susceptibility of a fractional quantum Hall disk, representing a Coulomb island in a Fabry--Perot interferometer, is exactly proportional to the island's conductance and its paramagnetic peaks are the equilibrium counterparts of the Coulomb blockade conductance peaks. Using as a thermodynamic potential the partition functions of the edge states' effective conformal field theory we find the positions of the Coulomb blockade peaks, when the area of the island is varied, the modulations of the distance between them as well as the thermal decay and broadening of the peaks when temperature is increased. The finite-temperature estimates of the peak's heights and widths could give important information about the experimental observability of the Coulomb blockade. In addition, the predicted peak asymmetry and displacement at finite temperature due to neutral multiplicities could serve to distinguish different fractional quantum Hall states with similar zero-temperature Coulomb blockade patterns.

We analyze the Abelian states with hierarchical filling fractions, ν=m/(mp \pm 1), and find a non trivial pattern of conductance peaks. In particular, each one of them occurs with a characteristic multiplicity, that is due to the extended symmetry of the m-folded edge. We give a rigorous and self-consistent derivation of the elementary braid matrices representing the exchanges of adjacent Ising anyons in the two inequivalent representations of the Pfaffian quantum Hall states with even and odd number of Majorana fermions. To this end we use the distinct operator product expansions of the chiral spin fields in the Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond sectors of the two-dimensional Ising conformal field theory. We find recursive relations for the generators of the irreducible representations of the braid group B_{2n+2} in terms of those for B_{2n}, as well as explicit formulas for almost all braid matrices for exchanges of Ising anyons. Finally we prove that the braid-group representations obtained from the multi-anyon Pfaffian wave functions are completely equivalent to the spinor representations of SO(2n+2) and give the equivalence matrices explicitly. This actually proves that the correlation functions of 2n chiral Ising spin fields sigma do indeed realize one of the two inequivalent spinor representations of the rotation group SO(2n) as conjectured by Nayak and Wilczek.

We review the topological quantum computation scheme of Das Sarma et al. from the perspective of the conformal field theory for the two-dimensional critical Ising model. This scheme originally used the monodromy properties of the non-Abelian excitations in the Pfaffian quantum Hall state to construct elementary qubits and execute logical NOT on them. We extend the scheme of Das Sarma et al. by exploiting the explicit braiding transformations for the Pfaffian wave functions containing 4 and 6 quasiholes to implement, for the first time in this context, the single-qubit Hadamard and phase gates and the two-qubit Controlled-NOT gate over Pfaffian qubits in a topologically protected way. In more detail, we explicitly construct the unitary representations of the braid groups B_4, B_6 and B_8 and use the elementary braid matrices to implement one-, two- and three-qubit gates. We also propose to construct a topologically protected Toffoli gate, in terms of a braid-group based Controlled-Controlled-Z gate precursor. Finally we discuss some difficulties arising in the embedding of the Clifford gates and address several important questions about topological quantum computation in general.

This universal approach uses the effective conformal field theory for the edge states in the quantum Hall effect to derive explicit formulas for the corresponding partition functions in presence of flux. We point out the crucial role of a special invariance condition for the partition function, following from the Bloch-Byers-Yang theorem, which represents the Laughlin spectral flow. As an example we apply this procedure to the Z_k parafermion Hall states and show that they have universal non-Fermi liquid behavior without anomalous oscillations. Using the effective conformal field theory for the quantum Hall edge states we propose a compact and convenient scheme for the computation of the periods, amplitudes and temperature behavior of the chiral persistent currents and the magnetic susceptibilities in the mesoscopic disk version of the Z_k parafermion quantum Hall states in the second Landau level. Our numerical calculations show that the persistent currents are periodic in the Aharonov-Bohm flux with period exactly one flux quantum and have a diamagnetic nature. In the high-temperature regime their amplitudes decay exponentially with increasing the temperature and the corresponding exponents are universal characteristics of non-Fermi liquids. Our theoretical results for these exponents are in perfect agreement with those extracted from the numerical data and demonstrate that there is in general a non-trivial contribution coming from the neutral sector. We emphasize the crucial role of the non-holomorphic factors, first proposed by Cappelli and Zemba in the context of the conformal field theory partition functions for the quantum Hall states, which ensure the invariance of the annulus partition function under the Laughlin spectral flow.

We review a recent development in the theoretical understanding of the nu=5/2 quantum Hall plateau and propose a new conformal field theory, slightly different from the Moore-Read one, to describe another universality class relevant for this plateau. The ground state is still given by the Pfaffian and is completely polarized, however, the elementary quasiholes are charge 1/2 anyons with abelian statistics theta=pi/2, which obey complete spin-charge separation. The physical hole is represented by two such quasiholes plus a free neutral Majorana fermion. We also compute the periods and amplitudes of the chiral persistent currents in both states and show that they have different temperature dependence. Finally, we find indications of a classical two-step phase transition between the new and the Moore-Read states, through a compressible state, which is characterized by the spontaneous breaking of a hidden Z_2 symmetry corresponding to the conservation of the chiral fermion parity. We believe that this transition could explain the "kink" observed in the activation experiment for nu=5/2.

The Z_k-parafermion Hall state is an incompressible fluid of k-electron clusters generalizing the Pfaffian state of paired electrons. Extending our earlier analysis of the Pfaffian, we introduce two ``parent'' abelian Hall states which reduce to the parafermion state by projecting out some neutral degrees of freedom. The first abelian state is a generalized (331) state which describes clustering of k distinguishable electrons and reproduces the parafermion state upon symmetrization over the electron coordinates. This description yields simple expressions for the quasi-particle wave functions of the parafermion state. The second abelian state is realized by a conformal theory with a (2k-1)-dimensional chiral charge lattice and it reduces to the Z_k-parafermion state via the coset construction su(k)_1+su(k)_1/su(k)_2. The detailed study of this construction provides us a complete account of the excitations of the parafermion Hall state, including the field identifications, the Z_k symmetry and the partition function.

The wave functions of the Haldane-Rezayi paired Hall state have been previously described by a non-unitary conformal field theory with central charge c=-2. Moreover, a relation with the c=1 unitary Weyl fermion has been suggested. We construct the complete unitary theory and show that it consistently describes the edge excitations of the Haldane-Rezayi state. Actually, we show that the unitary (c=1) and non-unitary (c=-2) theories are related by a local map between the two sets of fields and by a suitable change of conjugation. The unitary theory of the Haldane-Rezayi state is found to be the same as that of the 331 paired Hall state. Furthermore, the analysis of modular invariant partition functions shows that no alternative unitary descriptions are possible for the Haldane-Rezayi state within the class of rational conformal field theories with abelian current algebra. Finally, the known c=3/2 conformal theory of the Pfaffian state is also obtained from the 331 theory by a reduction of degrees of freedom which can be physically realized in the double-layer Hall systems.

RCFT extensions of W_{1+infinity} in terms of bilocal fields

Abstract:
The rational conformal field theory (RCFT) extensions of W_{1+infinity} at c=1 are in one-to-one correspondence with 1-dimensional integral lattices L(m). Each extension is associated with a pair of oppositely charged ``vertex operators" of charge square m in N. Their product defines a bilocal field V_m(z_1,z_2) whose expansion in powers of z_{12}=z_1-z_2 gives rise to a series of (neutral) loca…

The rational conformal field theory (RCFT) extensions of W_{1+infinity} at c=1 are in one-to-one correspondence with 1-dimensional integral lattices L(m). Each extension is associated with a pair of oppositely charged ``vertex operators" of charge square m in N. Their product defines a bilocal field V_m(z_1,z_2) whose expansion in powers of z_{12}=z_1-z_2 gives rise to a series of (neutral) local quasiprimary fields V^l(z,m) (of dimension l+1). The associated bilocal exponential of a normalized current generates the W_{1+infinity} algebra spanned by the V^l(z,1) (and the unit operator). The extension of this construction to higher (integer) values of the central charge c is also considered.
Applications to a quantum Hall system require computing characters (i.e., chiral partition functions) depending not just on the modular parameter tau, but also on a chemical potential zeta. We compute such a zeta dependence of orbifold characters, thus extending the range of applications of a recent study of affine orbifolds.

The Wen-Wu c=-2 model describes the d-wave paired singlet factor of the Haldane-Rezayi (quantum Hall) wave function in terms of an SU(2) doublet of dimension 1 fermions. The resulting CFT involves an infinite sequence of Virasoro primary fields. The superalgebra generated by these fields, on the other hand, admits a set of ground state representations giving rise to a rational c=-2 CFT. We compute the corresponding characters as well as the characters of the bosonic subalgebra in the Z_2 twisted sector and write down a modular invariant partition function for the ensuing 2-dimensional conformal theory.
