To experimentally clarify the changes in structural and dynamic heterogeneities in a metallic glass (MG), Gd65Co35, by rejuvenation with a temperature cycling (cryogenic rejuvenation), high-energy x-ray diffraction (HEXRD), anomalous x-ray scattering (AXS), and inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) experiments were carried out. By a repeated temperature change between liquid N2 and room temperatures 40 times, tiny but clear structural changes are observed by HEXRD even in the first neighboring range. Partial structural information obtained by AXS reveals that slight movements of the Gd and Co atoms occur in the first- and second-neighboring shells around the central Gd atom. The concentration inhomogeneity in the nm size drastically increases for the Gd atoms by the temperature cycling, while the other heterogeneities are negligible. A distinct change was detected in a microscopic elastic property by IXS: The width of longitudinal acoustic excitation broadens by about 20%, indicating an increase of the elastic heterogeneity of this MG by the thermal treatments. These static and dynamic results explicitly clarify the features of the cryogenic rejuvenation effect experimentally.

Previously reported inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of a typical van der Waals molecular liquid CCl4 were reanalyzed by using a generalized Langevin formalism with a memory function including a thermal and two viscoelastic relaxation processes together with a simple sparse modeling. The obtained excitations of longitudinal acoustic phonons show a largely positive deviation from the hydrodynamic value by about 57%, much larger than about 37% by the previously reported damped harmonic oscillator result. Such large values of fast sounds in molecular liquids being larger than about 15-20% of typical liquid metals are interpreted as extra energy-losses for terahertz phonons by vibrational and rotational motions of molecules. The rates of the fast and slow viscoelastic relaxations in the memory function at low Q indicate large values, about 0.5 and 2 ps, which correspond to the vibrational and rotational motions of CCl4 molecules, respectively. These values are larger than those of the typical polar molecular liquid acetone, which may reflect the heavier atomic mass of CCl4. The Q dependences of the viscoelastic relaxation rates are discussed in terms of lifetime and propagating length of the terahertz phonon oscillations. The microscopic kinematic longitudinal viscosity rapidly decreases with Q from a reasonable macroscopic value.

The microscopic structure of two amorphous materials with extreme nonlinear optical properties has been studied. One of these materials exhibits second harmonic generation, while another material of similar molecular structure emits brilliant white light if being irradiated with a simple IR laser diode. Structural differences were investigated using X-ray scattering and EXAFS combined with molecular RMC. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning precession electron diffraction were used to understand specific structural differences on all length scales, from mesoscopic down to mutual molecular arrangements. Characteristic differences were found at all scales. Close core-core spacing between {SnS} clusters as well as characteristic cluster distortions appear to be characteristic features of the white light emitting material. In the other material, cores are undistorted and core distances are larger. There, the formation of nanocrystalline structures in the amorphous matrix could also be identified as reason for the WLG suppression.

The microscopic structure of a new infrared-driven amorphous white-light-generating material was explored by X-ray diffraction, EXAFS and Reverse Monte Carlo simulation. In this material, structural disorder appears to be prerequisite for this nonlinear optical effect. The results are consistent with quantum chemical predictions, but it is also found that the molecular cores are distorted, which is identified as a crystallization inhibitor. Sulfur atoms thereby form a uniform vibrational network, which may be responsible for the high capability of the material to absorb infrared radiation.

The role of catalyst support and regioselectivity of molecular adsorption on a metal oxide surface is investigated for the NO reduction on a Cu/γ-alumina heterogeneous catalyst. For the solid surface, computational models of the γ-alumina surface are constructed based on the Step-by-Step Hydrogen Termination (SSHT) approach. Dangling bonds, which appear by cutting the crystal structure of a model, are terminated stepwise with H atoms until the model has an appropriate energy gap. The obtained SSHT models exhibit the realistic infrared (IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV/Vis) spectra. Vibronic coupling density (VCD), as a reactivity index, is employed to elucidate the regioselectivity of the Cu adsorption on the γ-alumina and that of the NO adsorption on the Cu/γ-alumina in place of the frontier orbital theory that could not provide clear results. We discovered that the highly dispersed Cu atoms are loaded on Lewis-basic O atoms, which is known as anchoring effect, located in the tetrahedral sites of the γ-alumina surface. The role of the γ-alumina support is to raise the frontier orbital of the Cu catalyst, which in turn gives rise to the electron back-donation from the Cu/γ-alumina to NO. In addition, the penetration of the VCD distribution of the Cu/γ-alumina into the γ-alumina support indicates that the excessive reaction energies dissipate into the support after the NO adsorption and reduction. In other words, the support plays the role of a heat bath. The NO reduction on the Cu/γ-alumina proceeds even in an oxidative atmosphere because the Cu-NO bond is strongly bounded compared to the Cu-O2 bond.

The reconstructed images of the neighboring atoms around Yb3+ show a fcc structure as observed by diffraction experiments, whereas those around Yb2+ have curious cross (+) features, indicating a positional shift of the centered Yb2+ ions from the fcc lattice point.

The structure of amorphous Cu$_2$GeTe$_3$ is investigated by a combination of anomalous x-ray scattering and extended x-ray absorption fine structure experiments. The experimental data are analyzed with a reverse Monte Carlo modeling procedure, and interpreted in terms of the short- and intermediate-range order. Based on this information, a model for the phase transition in Cu$_2$GeTe$_3$ is proposed, in which atoms move toward the center of the 6-fold rings of the crystal structure, leading to the formation of wrong bonds and a broader distribution of ring structures, but also preserving some structural motifs of the crystal.

The step-by-step hydrogen-terminated (SSHT) model is proposed as a model for the surfaces of metal oxides. Using this model, it is found that the vibronic coupling density (VCD) can be employed as a reactivity index for surface reactions. As an example, the regioselectivity of CO$_2$ adsorption on the Ag-loaded Ga$_2$O$_3$ photocatalyst surface is investigated based on VCD analysis. The cluster model constructed by the SSHT approach reasonably reflects the electronic structures of the Ga$_2$O$_3$ surface. The geometry of CO$_2$ adsorbed on the Ag-loaded Ga$_2$O$_3$ cluster has a bent structure, which is favorable for its photocatalytic reduction to CO.

Small and damped indications of longitudinal optic excitation modes were observed on the tails of the longitudinal acoustic modes at small momentum transfers, $Q\sim5$ nm$^{-1}$. The measured spectra are in good agreement, in both frequency and linewidth, with {\it ab initio} molecular dynamics (MD) simulations but not classical MD simulations. The observation of these modes at small $Q$ and a good agreement with the simulation permits clear identification of these as collective optic modes with well defined phasing between different ionic motions.

The well-known `8-$N$ bonding rule' proposed by Mott breaks down around the As atoms, exceeding the rule by 7--26%. An experimental prediction based on mean-field theory agrees with the present experimental and theoretical results. The fourfold coordinated As atoms likely form As-As wrong bond chains rather than ethan-like configurations, which is identified as the origin for the breakdown of the `8-$N$ bonding rule'.

We report here an experimental study of collective modes in molten nickel, a case of exceptional geophysical interest for its relevance in Earth interior science. Our result shed light on previously reported contrasting evidences: in the explored energy-momentum region no deviation from the generalized hydrodynamic picture describing non conductive fluids are observed. Implications for high frequency transport properties in metallic fluids are discussed.
