Anomalous weak values are caused by disturbance
Abstract: In combination with post-selection, weak measurements can lead to surprising results known as anomalous weak values. These lie outside the bounds of the spectrum of the relevant observable, as in the canonical example of measuring the spin of an electron (along some axis) to be 100. We argue that the disturbance caused by the weak measurement, while small, is sufficient to significantly affect the… ▽ More

The dilatation operator for defect conformal N=4 SYM
Abstract: We compute the dilatation operator for local "open string" operators situated at the interface of a certain supersymmetric defect version of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. This field theory is dual to a probe D5-brane intersecting a stack of D3-branes where the number of D3-branes can change between the two sides the interface. DeWolfe and Mann obtained the dilation operator in the speci… ▽ More

The One-Loop Spectral Problem of Strongly Twisted $\mathcal{N}$=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory
Abstract: We investigate the one-loop spectral problem of $γ$-twisted, planar $\mathcal{N}$=4 Super Yang-Mills theory in the double-scaling limit of infinite, imaginary twist angle and vanishing Yang-Mills coupling constant. This non-unitary model has recently been argued to be a simpler version of full-fledged planar $\mathcal{N}$=4 SYM, while preserving the latter model's conformality and integrability. W… ▽ More

Introduction to Integrability and One-point Functions in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and its Defect Cousin
Abstract: These lectures give a basic introduction to $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory and the integrability of its planar spectral problem as seen from the perspective of a recent development, namely the application of integrability techniques in the study of one-point functions in a defect version of the theory.

Two-point functions in AdS/dCFT and the boundary conformal bootstrap equations
Abstract: We calculate the leading contributions to the connected two-point functions of protected scalar operators in the defect version of N=4 SYM theory which is dual to the D5-D3 probe-brane system with k units of background gauge field flux. This involves several types of two-point functions which are vanishing in the theory without the defect, such as two-point functions of operators of unequal confor… ▽ More

Asymptotic one-point functions in AdS/dCFT
Abstract: We take the first step in extending the integrability approach to one-point functions in AdS/dCFT to higher loop orders. More precisely, we argue that the formula encoding all tree-level one-point functions of SU(2) operators in the defect version of N=4 SYM theory, dual to the D5-D3 probe-brane system with flux, has a natural asymptotic generalization to higher loop orders. The asymptotic formula… ▽ More

A Quantum Check of AdS/dCFT
Abstract: We build the framework for performing loop computations in the defect version of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory which is dual to the probe D5-D3 brane system with background gauge-field flux. In this dCFT, a codimension-one defect separates two regions of space-time with different ranks of the gauge group and three of the scalar fields acquire non-vanishing and space-time-dependent vacuum expectation… ▽ More

One-loop Wilson loops and the particle-interface potential in AdS/dCFT
Abstract: We initiate the calculation of quantum corrections to Wilson loops in a class of four-dimensional defect conformal field theories with vacuum expectation values based on N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Concretely, we consider an infinite straight Wilson line, obtaining explicit results for the one-loop correction to its expectation value in the large-N limit. This allows us to extract the particle-in… ▽ More

One-loop one-point functions in gauge-gravity dualities with defects
Abstract: We initiate the calculation of loop corrections to correlation functions in 4D defect CFTs. More precisely, we consider N=4 SYM with a codimension-one defect separating two regions of space, x_3>0 and x_3<0, where the gauge group is SU(N) and SU(N-k), respectively. This set-up is made possible by some of the real scalar fields acquiring a non-vanishing and x_3-dependent vacuum expectation value fo… ▽ More

Disturbance in weak measurements and the difference between quantum and classical weak values
Abstract: The role of measurement induced disturbance in weak measurements is of central importance for the interpretation of the weak value. Uncontrolled disturbance can interfere with the postselection process and make the weak value dependent on the details of the measurement process. Here we develop the concept of a generalized weak measurement for classical and quantum mechanics. The two cases appear r… ▽ More

The van der Waals interaction in one, two and three dimensions
Abstract: The van der Waals interaction between two polarizable atoms is considered. In three dimensions the standard form with an attractive $1/|R|^6$ potential is obtained from second-order quantum perturbation theory. When the electron motion is restricted to lower dimensions (but the $1/|R|$ Coulomb potential is retained), new terms in the expansion appear and alter both the sign and the $|R|$ dependenc… ▽ More

Error-disturbance relations for finite dimensional systems

Universality of 2d causal dynamical triangulations
Abstract: The formalism of Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) attempts to provide a non-perturbative regularization of quantum gravity, viewed as an ordinary quantum field theory. In two dimensions one can solve the lattice theory analytically and the continuum limit is universal, not depending on the details of the lattice regularization.

New Bessel Identities from Laguerre Polynomials
Abstract: For large order, Laguerre polynomials can be approximated by Bessel functions near the origin. This can be used to turn many Laguerre identities into corresponding identities for Bessel functions. We will illustrate this idea with a number of examples. In particular, we will derive a generalization of a identity due to Sonine, which appears to be new.

The k-th Smallest Dirac Operator Eigenvalue and the Pion Decay Constant
Abstract: We derive an analytical expression for the distribution of the k-th smallest Dirac eigenvalue in QCD with imaginary isospin chemical potential in the Dirac operator. Approximate Bayesian computation scheme for parameter inference and model selection in dynamical systems
Abstract: Approximate Bayesian computation methods can be used to evaluate posterior distributions without having to calculate likelihoods. In this paper we discuss and apply an approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) method based on sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) to estimate parameters of dynamical models. We show that ABC SMC gives information about the inferability of parameters and model sensitivity to c… ▽ More
