Grain alignment is a key factor that determines the performance of a superconducting bulk. In this study, the spark plasma texturing (SPT) technique was used to fabricate a CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ superconducting bulk. X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction revealed that the $c$-axes of the CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ grains in the SPT bulk are aligned, demonstrating that the SPT technique is effective in achieving $c$-axis texture. In addition, chemical composition analysis showed that oxide impurities, which affect the grain boundary characteristics that determine the inter-grain critical current density ($J_c$), are randomly distributed in the SPT bulk. Magnetization measurements showed high $J_c$ values of the SPT bulk, reaching 127 kA cm$^{-2}$ and 26 kA cm$^{-2}$ at 4.2 K under a self-field and magnetic field of 5 T, respectively. These results suggest that the SPT technique is a promising approach for obtaining a high-performance superconducting bulk material for high-field applications.

The density of the synthesized sample was 5.02 g cm$^{-3}$, corresponding to 96.2% of the theoretical density of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$. Moreover, a reasonably high Vickers hardness of 1 GPa was measured. The electrical resistivity of the SPS bulk sample was as low as approximately 600 $μΩ$ cm at 300 K, which is smaller than that of the ordinary sintered polycrystalline sample by nearly one order of magnitude, and exhibited a sharp superconducting transition, with the transition width $Δ\textit{T}_c$ less than 2 K, indicating an improved grain connectivity. The critical current density of the SPS bulk sample, as calculated from the magnetization hysteresis loops (magnetic $\textit{J}_c$), reached 18 kA cm$^{-2}$ at 4.2 K under 5 T, which is the highest among the iron-based superconductor polycrystalline samples reported thus far.

In this study, we conducted experiments on CaC6 for elucidating the Na-catalyzed formation mechanism and achieving rapid mass synthesis of graphite intercalation compounds (GICs). Rapidly synthesized CaC6 was characterized by analysis of its crystal structure and physical properties. We found that the formation of the reaction intermediate Na-GIC (NaCx, x = 64) requires a larger amount of Na than is intercalated between the graphite interlayers. The requirement for excess Na may provide insights into the mechanism of Na-catalyzed GIC formation. A Na-to-C molar mixing ratio of 1.5-2.0:6 was suitable for the efficient formation of CaC6 under heat treatment at 250°C for 2 h, and the catalytic Na remaining in the sample was demonstrably reduced to a Na:Ca ratio of approximately 3:97. The upper critical field Hc2 was enhanced approximately three times compared to those of previous reports. Based on X-ray diffraction and experimental parameter analysis, we concluded that the enhancement of Hc2 was attributed to the disordered stacking sequence in CaC6, possibly because of the rapid and low-temperature formation. Physical properties derived from specific heat measurements were comparable to those of high-quality CaC6, which is slowly synthesized using the molten Li-Ca alloy method. This study provides new avenues for future research and exploration in the rapid mass synthesis of GICs as practical materials, for applications such as battery electrodes and superconducting wires.

The iron-based pnictide LaFe2As2 is not superconducting as-synthesized, but it becomes such below Tc around 12 K upon annealing, as a consequence of a structural transition from a phase with collapsed tetragonal crystal structure to an uncollapsed phase. In this work, we carry out specific heat, Raman spectroscopy and normal state electric and thermoelectric transport measurements in the collapsed and uncollapsed LaFe2As2 phases to gain insight into the electron interactions and their possible role in the superconducting pairing mechanism. Despite clear features of strong electron-phonon coupling observed in both phases, neither the low energy phonon spectra nor the electron-phonon coupling show significant differences between the two phases. Conversely, the Sommerfield constants are significantly different in the two phases, pointing to much higher electron correlation in the superconducting uncollapsed phase and confirming theoretical studies.

Isotope $^{121,123}$Sb nuclei with large electric quadrupole moments are applied to investigate the dynamics of orbital degrees of freedom in Sb-substituted iron(Fe)-based compounds. In the parent compound LaFe(As$_{0.6}$Sb$_{0.4}$)O, the nuclear spin relaxation rate $^{121,123}(T_{1}^{-1})$ at $^{121,123}$Sb sites was enhanced at structural transition temperature ($T_{s}\sim$ 135 K), which is higher than Néel temperature ($T_{\rm N}\sim$125 K). The isotope ratio $^{123}(T_{1}^{-1})/^{121}(T_{1}^{-1})$ indicates that the electric quadrupole relaxation due to the dynamical electric field gradient at Sb site increases significantly toward $T_{s}$. It is attributed to the critically enhanced nematic fluctuations of stripe-type arrangement of Fe-$3d_{xz}$ (or $3d_{yz}$) orbitals. In the lightly electron-doped superconducting (SC) compound LaFe(As$_{0.7}$Sb$_{0.3}$)(O$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$), the nematic fluctuations are largely suppressed in comparison with the case of the parent compound, however, it remains a small enhancement below 80 K down to the $T_c$($\sim$ 20 K). The results indicate that the fluctuations from both the spin and orbital degrees of freedom on the $3d_{xz}$(or $3d_{yz}$) orbitals can be seen in lightly electron-doped SC state of LaFeAsO-based compounds. We emphasize that isotope $^{121,123}$Sb quadrupole moments are sensitive local probe to identify the dynamics of orbital degrees of freedom in Fe-pnictides, which provides with a new opportunity to discuss the microscopic correlation between the superconductivity and both nematic and spin fluctuations simultaneously even in the polycrystalline samples.

The pair density wave (PDW) is a novel superconducting state in which Cooper pairs carry center-of-mass momentum in equilibrium, leading to the breaking of translational symmetry. Experimental evidence for such a state exists in high magnetic field and in some materials that feature density wave orders that explicitly break translational symmetry. However, evidence for a zero-field PDW state that exists independent of other spatially ordered states has so far been elusive. Here, we show that such a state exists in the iron pnictide superconductor EuRbFe4As4 (Eu-1144), a material that features coexisting superconductivity (Tc ~ 37K) and magnetism (Tm ~ 15 K). We show from the Spectroscopic Imaging Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (SI-STM) measurements that the superconducting gap at low temperature has long-range, unidirectional spatial modulations with an incommensurate period of ~8 unit cells. Upon raising the temperature above Tm, the modulated superconductor disappears, but a uniform superconducting gap survives to Tc. When an external magnetic field is applied, gap modulations disappear inside the vortex halo. The SI-STM and bulk measurements show the absence of other density wave orders, showing that the PDW state is a primary, zero-field superconducting state in this compound. Both four-fold rotational symmetry and translation symmetry are recovered above Tm, indicating that the PDW is a smectic order.

We have discovered that Na has a catalytic property that dramatically accelerates the formation of GICs. We demonstrate that LiC6n (n = 1, 2), KC8, KC12n (n = 2, 3, 4), and NaCx are synthesized simply by mixing alkali metals and graphite powder with Na at room temperature (~25 °C), and AEC6 (AE = Ca, Sr, Ba) are synthesized by heating Na-added reagents at 250 °C only for a few hours. The NaCx, formed by the mixing of C and Na, is understood to act as a reaction intermediate for a catalyst, thereby accelerating the formation of GICs by lowering the activation energy of intercalation. The Na-catalyzed method, which enables the rapid and mass synthesis of homogeneous GIC samples in a significantly simpler manner than conventional methods, is anticipated to stimulate research and development for GIC applications.

This motivates us to study the physical properties of Ba$_{1-x}$Rb$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, details of which remain largely unexplored. Here we report on the normal-state charge transport in Ba$_{1-x}$Rb$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ superconductors by using high-quality single crystals in the range of Rb concentration $0.14\le x \le 1.00$. From the systematic measurements of the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, we find a signature of a deviation from the Fermi liquid behavior around the optimal composition, which does not seem related to the antiferromagnetic quantum criticality but has a potential link to hidden nematic quantum criticality. In addition, electron correlations derived from the coefficient of $T^2$ resistivity show a marked increase with Rb content near the heavily hole-doped end, consistent with the putative Mott physics near the $3d^5$ electron configuration in iron-based superconductors.

The Pd-rich samples (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.2) had the same non-centrosymmetric (NCS) tetragonal structure (a space group of $I41md$) as SrPd$_{3}$P. For the samples with 0.3 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.7, a centrosymmetric (CS) tetragonal structure ($P4/nmm$) identical to that of SrPt$_{3}$P was found to appear, accompanied by superconductivity at a transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) up to 3.7 K. In the samples synthesized with Pt-rich nominal compositions (0.8 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1.0), Sr$_{2}$(Pd,Pt)$_{8-y}$As$_{1+y}$ with an intergrowth structure (CS-orthorhombic with Cmcm) was crystallized. The phase diagram obtained for Sr(Pd,Pt)$_{3}$As was analogous to that of (Ca,Sr)Pd$_{3}$P in that superconductivity ($T_\mathrm{c}$ $\geq$ 2 K) occurred in the CS phases induced by substitutions to the NCS phases. This study indicates the potential for further material variation expansion and the importance of elemental substitutions to reveal hidden phases in related antiperovskites.

We successfully synthesized BaIr2, the last Laves phase remaining unsynthesized in the MgCu2-type AM2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; M = Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt). BaIr2 was crystallized at 925 C under a pressure of 3.3 GPa via a solid-state reaction between Ba and Ir powders; it was found to have the longest a-lattice constant of 8.038(1) A among AM2. BaIr2 exhibited bulk superconductivity at a transition temperature (Tc) of 2.7 K. BaIr2 was found to have a type-II superconductor with an upper critical field of 67.7 kOe, which was above the Pauli paramagnetic limit (50 kOe). The electron-phonon coupling constant and normalized specific heat jump were measured to be 0.63 and 1.2, respectively, indicating that BaIr2 is a weak-coupling superconductor. The electronic-structure calculations for BaIr2 revealed that the Ir-5d states are dominant at the Fermi energy (EF) and the density of states at the EF is strongly affected by SOI as in the case of CaIr2 and SrIr2.

We report the effects of low-temperature postannealing on the structural and superconducting properties of the recently discovered Ca-free double-layered cuprate, Sr$_2$SrCu$_2$O$_{4+y}$F$_{2-y}$. Although the as-synthesized sample prepared under high pressure has a tetragonal structure with a rock-salt-type blocking layer (the so-called $T$-phase), we found that the symmetry of the structure lowered to that of an orthorhombic system when annealed with CuF$_2$. The structural refinements reveal that such a topochemical reaction leads not only to the removal of excess O$^{2-}$ from the apical site but also to the intercalation of extra F$^-$ into the interstitial site. The orthorhombic phase exhibits bulk superconductivity at a critical temperature of 107 K, which is significantly higher than that of the $T$-phase ($\sim$50 K). Meanwhile, the $T$-phase turns into another structure possessing a fluorite-type blocking layer without apical fluorine (known as the $T^\prime$-phase) by annealing without CuF$_2$. Density functional theory calculations show that the $T^\prime$-phase is more stable than the $T$-phase. This is the first report on the formation of a $T^\prime$-type double-layered cuprate. Furthermore, the structural stability of the three phases of Sr$_2$SrCu$_2$O$_{4+y}$F$_{2-y}$ is discussed in terms of lattice matching between the blocking and conducting layers.

While $A$Pd$_{3}$P and (Ca,Sr)Pd$_{3}$P were found to be tetragonal or orthorhombic systems, LaPd$_{3}$P is a new prototype cubic system ($a$ = 9.0317(1) A) with a noncentrosymmetric space group ($I-43m$). LaPd$_{3}$P exhibited superconductivity with a transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) of 0.28 K. The upper critical field, Debye temperature, and Sommerfeld constant ($γ$) were determined as 0.305(8) kOe, 267(1) K, 6.06(4) mJ mol-1 K-2 f.u.-1, respectively. We performed first-principles electronic band structure calculations for LaPd$_{3}$P and compared the theoretical and experimental results. The calculated Sommerfeld constant (2.24 mJ mol-1 K-2 f.u.-1) was much smaller than the experimental value of $γ$ because the Fermi energy ($E_\mathrm{F}$) was located slightly below the density of states (DOS) pseudogap. This difference was explained by the increase in the DOS at $E_\mathrm{F}$ due to the approximately 5 at.% La deficiency (hole doping) in the sample. The observed Tc value was much lower than that estimated using the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer equation. To explain the discrepancy, we examined the possibility of an unconventional superconductivity in LaPd$_{3}$P arising from the lack of space inversion symmetry.

Magnetic superconductors are specific materials exhibiting two antagonistic phenomena, superconductivity and magnetism, whose mutual interaction induces various emergent phenomena, such as the reentrant superconducting transition associated with the suppression of superconductivity around the magnetic transition temperature (Tm), highlighting the impact of magnetism on superconductivity. In this study, we report the experimental observation of the ferromagnetic order induced by superconducting vortices in the high-critical-temperature (high-Tc) magnetic superconductor EuRbFe4As4. Although the ground state of the Eu2+ moments in EuRbFe4As4 is helimagnetism below Tm, neutron diffraction and magnetization experiments show a ferromagnetic hysteresis of the Eu2+ spin alignment. We demonstrate that the direction of the Eu2+ moments is dominated by the distribution of pinned vortices based on the critical state model. Moreover, we demonstrate the manipulation of spin texture by controlling the direction of superconducting vortices, which can help realize spin manipulation devices using magnetic superconductors.

Electronic nematic states with broken rotational symmetry often emerge in correlated materials. In most iron-based superconductors, the nematic anisotropy is oriented in the Fe-Fe direction of the iron square lattice. Recently, a novel type of nematicity along the diagonal Fe-As direction has been suggested in heavily hole-doped $A$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($A=$ Rb or Cs). However, the transport studies focusing on the fluctuations of such nematicity have provided controversial results regarding the presence of diagonal nematic order. Here we report high-resolution heat capacity measurements under in-plane field rotation in RbFe$_2$As$_2$. While the temperature dependence of specific heat shows no discernible anomaly associated with the nematic transition, the field-angle dependence of specific heat near the superconducting transition (at $\sim 2.8$ K) reveals clear two-fold oscillations within the plane, providing thermodynamic evidence for the diagonal nematicity. Moreover, we find that Mössbauer spectroscopy sensitively probes the nematic transition at $\sim 50$ K with no evidence of static magnetism. These results imply that the diagonal nematicity in RbFe$_2$As$_2$ has a unique mechanism involving charge degrees of freedom, having unusual thermodynamic properties of the transition.

In the recently discovered antiperovskite phosphide (Ca,Sr)Pd$_3$P, centrosymmetric (CS) and non-centrosymmetric (NCS) superconducting phases appear depending on the Sr concentration, and their transition temperatures ($T_\mathrm{c}$) differ by as much as one order of magnitude. In this study, we investigated the superconducting properties and electronic band structures of CS orthorhombic (CSo) (Ca$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$)Pd$_3$P ($T_\mathrm{c}$ = 3.5 K) and NCS tetragonal (NCSt) (Ca$_{0.25}$Sr$_{0.75}$)Pd$_3$P ($T_\mathrm{c}$ = 0.32 K) samples with a focus on explaining their large $T_\mathrm{c}$ difference. Specific heat measurements indicated that CSo (Ca$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$)Pd$_3$P was an s-wave superconductor in a moderate-coupling regime with a 2$Δ$$_0$/k$_B$$T_\mathrm{c}$ value of 4.0. Low-lying phonons leading to the strong coupling in the structurally analogous SrPt$_3$P were unlikely to be present in CSo (Ca$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$)Pd$_3$P. Given that CSo (Ca$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$)Pd$_3$P and NCSt (Ca$_{0.25}$Sr$_{0.75}$)Pd$_3$P exhibited similar Debye temperatures ($Θ$$_D$) of approximately 200 K, the large $T_\mathrm{c}$ difference could not be attributed to $Θ$$_D$.$T_\mathrm{c}$ of each phase was accurately reproduced based on the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory using experimental data and the density of states of the Fermi level $N$(0) calculated from their band structures. We concluded that the considerable suppression of $T_\mathrm{c}$ in NCSt (Ca$_{0.25}$Sr$_{0.75}$)Pd$_3$P can be primarily attributed to the decrease in $N$(0) associated with the structural phase transition without considering the lack of inversion symmetry.

It is generally difficult to quantify the amounts of light elements in materials because of their low X-ray-scattering power, as this means that they cannot be easily estimated via X-ray analyses. Meanwhile, the recently reported layered superconductor, Sc$_{20}$C$_{8-x}$B$_x$C$_{20}$, requires a small amount of boron, which is a light element, for its structural stability. In this context, here, we quantitatively evaluate the optimal $x$ value using both the experimental and computational approaches. Using the high-pressure synthesis approach that can maintain the starting composition even after sintering, we obtain the Sc$_{20}$(C,B)$_{8}$C$_{20}$ phase by the reaction of the previously reported Sc$_{15}$C$_{19}$ and B (Sc$_{15}$B$_y$C$_{19}$). Our experiments demonstrate that an increase in $y$ values promotes the phase formation of the Sc$_{20}$(C,B)$_{8}$C$_{20}$ structure; however, there appears to be an upper limit to the nominal $y$ value to form this phase. The maximum $T_\mathrm{c}$ $(=7.6\text{ K})$ is found to correspond with the actual $x$ value of $x \sim 5$ under the assumption that the sample with the same $T_\mathrm{c}$ as the reported value $(=7.7\text{ K})$ possesses the optimal $x$ amount. Moreover, we construct the energy convex hull diagram by calculating the formation enthalpy based on first principles. Our computational results indicate that the composition of Sc$_{20}$C$_4$B$_4$C$_{20}$ $(x=4)$ is the most thermodynamically stable, which is reasonably consistent with the experimentally obtained value.

Three perovskite-related crystal structures were identified in (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)Pd$_3$P and a phase diagram was built on the basis of experimental results. The first phase transition from centrosymmetric ($Pnma$) to non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic ($Aba$2) occurred in CaPd$_3$P near room temperature. The phase transition temperature decreased as Ca$^{2+}$ was replaced with a larger-sized isovalent Sr$^{2+}$. Bulk superconductivity at a critical temperature ($T$$_c$) of approximately 3.5 K was observed in a range of $x$ = 0.17 - 0.55; this was associated with the centrosymmetric orthorhombic phase. Thereafter, a non-centrosymmetric tetragonal phase ($I$41$md$) remained stable for 0.6 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 1.0, and superconductivity was significantly suppressed as samples with $x$ = 0.75 and 1.0 showed ($T$$_c$) values as low as 0.32 K and 57 mK, respectively. For further substitution with a larger-sized isovalent Ba$^{2+}$, namely (Sr$_{1-y}$Ba$_y$)Pd$_3$P, the tetragonal phase continued throughout the composition range. BaPd$_3$P no longer showed superconductivity down to 20 mK. Since the inversion symmetry of structure and superconductivity can be precisely controlled in (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)Pd$_3$P, this material may offer a unique opportunity to study the relationship between inversion symmetry and superconductivity.

We report resistance and elastoresistance measurements on (Ba$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$)Fe$_2$As$_2$, CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, and KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$. The Fe-site symmetry is $D_{2d}$ in the first compound but $C_{2v}$ in the latter two, which lifts the degeneracy of the Fe $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. The temperature dependence of the resistance and elastoresistance is similar between the three compounds. Especially, the [110] elastoresistance is enhanced with decreasing temperature irrespective of the Fe-site symmetry. This appears to be in conflict with recent Raman scattering studies on CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, which suggest the absence of nematic fluctuations. We consider possible ways of reconciliation and suggest that the present result is important in elucidating the origin of in-plane resistivity anisotropy in iron-based superconductors.

The discovery of nearly room-temperature superconductivity in superhydrides has motivated further materials research for conventional superconductors. To realize the moderately high critical temperature $(T_\mathrm{c})$ in materials containing light elements, we explored new superconducting phases in a scandium borocarbide system. Here, we report the observation of superconductivity in a new ternary Sc-B-C compound. The crystal structure, which was determined through a Rietveld analysis, belongs to tetragonal space group $P4/ncc$. By complementarily using the density functional theory calculations, a chemical formula of the compound was found to be expressed as Sc$_{20}$C$_{8-x}$B$_x$C$_{20}$($x=1\:\mathrm{or}\:2$). Interestingly, a small amount of B is essential to stabilize the present structure. Our experiments revealed the typical type-II superconductivity at $T_\mathrm{c}=7.7\:\mathrm{K}$. Additionally, we calculated the density of states within a first-principles approach and found that the contribution of the Sc-3d orbital was mainly responsible for the superconductivity.

The search for non-centrosymmetric superconductors that may exhibit unusual physical properties and unconventional superconductivity has yielded the synthesis of a non-centrosymmetric phosphide Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P with an Al$_2$Mo$_3$C-type structure. Although stoichiometric Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P does not exhibit superconductivity at temperatures above 2 K, we found that an Mg deficiency of approximately 5 at.% in the Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P induced superconductivity at 3.9 K. Physical properties such as the lattice parameter a = 0.70881 nm, Sommerfeld constant $γ_n$ = 5.36 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$, specific heat jump $Δ$C$_{el}$/$γ_n$Tc = 0.72, electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$$_{e-p}$ = 0.58, upper critical field H$_{c2}$(0) = 24.3 kOe, and pressure effect dTc/dP = -0.34 K/GPa were measured for the superconducting Mg$_{2-δ}$Rh$_3$P ($δ$ $\sim$ 0.1). Band-structure calculations indicate that exotic fermions, which are not present in high-energy physics, exist in Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P. Since Mg, Rh, and P are the first elements used at each crystal site of Al$_2$Mo$_3$C-type compounds, the discovery of Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P may guide the search for new related materials.

Their superconducting (SC) phases are characterized by unconventional multi-gap SC state, where the smaller SC gaps are particularly weaken in common. The experimental results indicate the close relationship between the AFMSFs and the SC from the hole-doped state to heavily electron-doped state, which shed light on a unique SC phase emerged in the heavily electron-doped regime being formally equivalent to non-SC compound Ba(Fe0.5Co0.5)Fe2As2.

Our results revealed that the parent AFM1 phase at $x$=0 disappears at $x$=0.3-0.4, corresponding to a pnictogen height ($h_{pn}$) from the Fe-plane of 1.3-1.32 Å, which is similar to that of LaFe(As$_{1-x'}$P$_{x'}$)O and various parent Fe-pnictides. By contrast, the AFM2 order reported for LaFe(As$_{0.4}$P$_{0.6}$)O does not appear at $x\sim$0.8, although the local lattice parameters of the Fe$Pn$ layer and the microscopic electronic states are quite similar. Despite the absence of the {\it static} AFM2 order, reemergent {\it dynamical} AFM spin fluctuations were observed at approximately $x\sim$0.8, which can be attributed to the instability of the AFM2 phase. We suggest this re-enhancement of AFM spin fluctuations to play a significant role in enhancing the $T_c$ to 17 K for $x$=0.8-1. Finally, we discuss the universality and diversity of the complicated magnetic ground states from a microscopic point of view, including the difference in the origins of the AFM1 and AFM2 phases, and their relations with the high superconducting transitions in Fe-pnictides.

The lossless current-carrying capacity of a superconductor is limited by its critical current density (Jc). A key to enhance Jc towards real-life applications is engineering defect structures to optimize the pinning landscape. For iron-based superconductors (IBSs) considered as candidate materials for high-field applications, high Jc values have been achieved by various techniques to introduce artificial pinning centres. Here we report extraordinary vortex pinning properties in CaKFe4As4 (CaK1144) arising from the inherent defect structure. Scanning transmission electron microscopy revealed the existence of nanoscale intergrowths of the CaFe2As2 phase, which is unique to CaK1144 formed as a line compound. The Jc properties in CaK1144 are found to be distinct from other IBSs characterized by a significant anisotropy with respect to the magnetic field orientation as well as a remarkable pinning mechanism significantly enhanced with increasing temperature. We propose a comprehensive explanation of the Jc properties based on the unique intergrowths acting as pinning centres.

Magnetic excitations and magnetic structure of EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ were investigated by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), neutron diffraction, and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. Below the superconducting transition temperature $T_\text{c}=36.5$~K, the INS spectra exhibit the neutron spin resonances at $Q_\text{res}=1.27(2)$~$\textÅ^{-1}$ and $1.79(3)$~$\textÅ^{-1}$. They correspond to the $\mathbf{Q}=(0.5,0.5,1)$ and $(0.5,0.5,3)$ nesting wave vectors, showing three dimensional nature of the band structure. The characteristic energy of the neutron spin resonance is $E_\text{res}=17.7(3)$~meV corresponding to $5.7(1)k_\text{B}T_\text{c}$. Observation of the neutron spin resonance mode and our RPA calculations in conjunction with the recent optical conductivity measurements are indicative of the $s_\pm$ superconducting pairing symmetry in EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$. In addition to the neutron spin resonance mode, upon decreasing temperature below the magnetic transition temperature $T_\text{N}=15$~K, the spin wave excitation originating in the long-range magnetic order of the Eu sublattice was observed in the low-energy inelastic channel. Single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements demonstrate that the magnetic propagation vector of the Eu sublattice is $\mathbf{k}=(0, 0, 0.25)$, representing the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic order. Linear spin wave calculations assuming the obtained magnetic structure with the intra- and inter-plane nearest neighbor exchange couplings of $J_1/k_\text{B}=-1.31$~K and $J_c/k_\text{B}=0.08$~K can reproduce quantitatively the observed spin wave excitation. Our results show that superconductivity and long-range magnetic order of Eu coexist in EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ whereas the coupling between them is rather weak.

A cylindrical hole-like Fermi-surface around the Γ point that plays an important role for an s+-wave paring in iron-based superconductors was missing in the uncollapsed tetragonal La122 due to heavily electron-doping. When the field is applied parallel to the ab plane, a dip structure is observed in the M-H hysteresis loop near the self-field. In addition, for the H//ab plane, we succeeded in separately evaluating the large and significantly anisotropic in-plane and out-of-plane Jc. Electronic nematicity, a correlated state that spontaneously breaks rotational symmetry, is observed in several layered quantum materials. In contrast to their liquid-crystal counterparts, the nematic director cannot usually point in an arbitrary direction (XY nematics), but is locked by the crystal to discrete directions (Ising nematics),resulting in strongly anisotropic fluctuations above the transition. Here, we report on the observation of nearly isotropic XY-nematic fluctuations, via elastoresistance measurements, in hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$Rb$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ iron-based superconductors. While for $x=0$ the nematic director points along the in-plane diagonals of the tetragonal lattice, for $x=1$ it points along the horizontal and vertical axes. Remarkably, for intermediate doping, the susceptibilities of these two symmetry-irreducible nematic channels display comparable Curie-Weiss behavior, thus revealing a nearly XY-nematic state. This opens a new route to assess this elusive electronic quantum liquid-crystalline state, which is a candidate to host unique phenomena not present in the Ising-nematic case.

The peak effect is observed in torque-vs-field curves below the irreversibility field. It is enhanced and becomes asymmetric as the field is tilted from the $c$ axis. For field directions close to the $ab$ plane, increasing- and decreasing-field curves peak at markedly different fields, and exhibit a sharp jump, suggestive of a first-order phase transition, on the high- and the low-field side of the peak, respectively. Complicated history dependence of the torque is observed in the peak-effect region. We construct and discuss the temperature ($T$)--applied-magnetic-field ($B_a$) phase diagram. Since the upper critical field for the $ab$-plane direction is comparable to the Pauli limit, we also consider possible influence of the spin paramagnetic effect on the anomalous peak effect.

This system shows a large elastic softening in $C_{66}$ towards low temperatures. In addition to $C_{66}$, which originates from orthorhombic structural fluctuation, the samples near the optimal concentration show remarkable structural fluctuation in $C_{11}$ and $C_{33}$ elastic modes, which correspond to $Γ_{1}$ (C4) symmetry. It suggests the existence of diverse fluctuations in this system. Gr{\" u}neisen parameters were analyzed under some assumptions for structural and magnetic transition temperatures. Results showed that the Gr{\" u}neisen parameters for the inter-plane strain are remarkably enhanced toward the QCP, while those for the in-plane stress tend to turn down near the QCP. Gr{\" u}neisen parameters for the superconducting transition are anisotropic and shows remarkable Co-concentration dependence, suggesting that the in-plane isotropic compression and inter-layer elongation enhance the superconductivity. The correlation of Gr{\" u}neisen parameters between $T_{\rm S}$, $T_{\rm N}$ and $T_{\rm sc}$ shows $c$-axis elongation and its relevant role in the emergence of superconductivity in this system.

The dynamical spin susceptibility in the new-structure-type iron-based superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ was investigated by using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. Powder INS measurements show that the spin resonance at $Q_\text{res}=1.17(1)$~$\textÅ^{-1}$, corresponding to the $(π,π)$ nesting wave vector in tetragonal notation, evolves below $T_\text{c}$. The characteristic energy of the spin resonance $E_\text{res}=12.5$~meV is smaller than twice the size of the superconducting gap ($2Δ$). The broad energy feature of the dynamical susceptibility of the spin resonance can be explained by the RPA calculations, in which the different superconducting gaps on different Fermi surfaces are taken into account. Our INS and PRA studies demonstrate that the superconducting pairing nature in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is the $s_\pm$ symmetry.

A newly discovered family of high-Tc Fe-based superconductors, AeAFe4As4 (Ae = Ca, Sr, Eu and A = K, Rb, Cs), offers further opportunities to understand unconventional superconductivity in these materials. In this Rapid Communication, we report on the superconducting and magnetic properties of CaKFe4As4, studied using muon spectroscopy. Zero-field muon spin relaxation studies carried out on the CaKFe4As4 superconductor do not show any detectable magnetic anomaly at Tc or below, implying that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting ground state. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density of CaKFe4As4 is found to be compatible with a two-gap s + s-wave model with gap values of 8.6(4) and 2.5(3) meV, similar to the other Fe-based superconductors. The presence of two superconducting energy gaps is consistent with theoretical and other experimental studies on this material. The value of the penetration depth at T = 0 K has been determined as 289(22) nm.

In order to establish the doping dependence of the critical current properties in the iron-based superconductors, the in-plane critical current density (Jc) of BaFe2As2-based superconductors, Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (K-Ba122), Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (Co-Ba122), and BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (P-Ba122) in a wide range of doping concentration (x) was investigated by means of magnetization hysteresis loop (MHL) measurements on single-crystal samples. Depending on the dopant elements and their concentration, Jc exhibits a variety of magnetic-field (H) and temperature (T) dependences. (1) In the case of K-Ba122, MHL of the underdoped samples (x < 0.33) exhibits the second magnetization peak (SMP), which sustains high Jc at high H and high T, exceeding 10^5 A/cm2 at T = 25 K and H = 6 T for x = 0.30. On the other hand, SMP is missing in the optimally (x ~ 0.36-0.40) and overdoped (x ~ 0.50) samples, and consequently Jc rapidly decreases by more than one order of magnitude, although the change in Tc is within a few K. (2) For Co-Ba122, SMP is always present over the entire superconducting (SC) dome from the under (x ~ 0.05) to the overdoped (x ~ 0.12) region. However, the magnitude of Jc significantly changes with x, exhibiting a sharp maximum at x ~ 0.057, which is a slightly underdoped composition for Co-Ba122. (3) For P-Ba122, the highest Jc is attained at x = 0.30 corresponding to the highest Tc composition. For the overdoped samples, MHL is characterized by SMP located close to the irreversibility field. Common to the three doping variations, Jc becomes highest at the under-doping side of SC dome near the phase boundary between SC phase and the antiferromagnetic/orthorhombic phase. Also, the peak appears in a narrow range of doping, distinct from the Tc dome with broad maximum. These similarities in the three cases indicate that the observed doping dependence of Jc is intrinsic to the BaFe2As2-based superconductors.

We have investigated the superconducting gap of optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.65}$Ru$_{0.35}$)$_2$As$_2$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (APRES) using bulk-sensitive 7 eV laser and synchrotron radiation. It was found that the gap is isotropic in the $k_x$-$k_y$ plane both on the electron and hole Fermi surfaces (FSs). The gap magnitudes of two resolved hole FSs show similar $k_z$ dependences and decrease as $k_z$ approaches $\sim$ 2$π$/$c$ (i.e., around the Z point) unlike the other Fe-based superconductors reported so far, where the superconducting gap of only one hole FS shows a strong $k_z$ dependence. This unique gap structure can be understood in the scenario that the $d_{z^2}$ orbital character is mixed into both hole FSs due to the finite spin-orbit coupling between almost degenerate FSs and is reproduced by calculations within the random phase approximation including the spin-orbit coupling.

The observed shift in the Fe mode (B1g) for SmFeAsO0.65 is ~ 1.4 % and lower in case of SmFeAsO0.77H0.12, which is ~ 0.65 %, attributed to the lower percentage of isotopic substitution in case of SmFeAsO0.77H0.12. We report $^{63}$Cu- and $^{205}$Tl-NMR studies on six-layered ($n$=6) high-$T_c$ superconducting (SC) cuprate TlBa$_2$Ca$_5$Cu$_6$O$_{14+δ}$ (Tl1256) with $T_c\sim$100 K, which reveal that antiferromagnetic (AFM) order takes place below $T_{\rm N}\sim$170 K. In this compound, four underdoped inner CuO$_2$ planes ($n$(IP)=4) sandwiched by two outer planes (OPs) are responsible for the onset of AFM order, whereas the nearly optimally-doped OPs responsible for the onset of bulk SC. It is pointed out that an increase in the out-of-plane magnetic interaction within an intra-unit-cell causes $T_{\rm N}\sim$ 45 K for Tl1245 with $n$(IP)=3 to increase to $\sim$170 K for Tl1256 with $n$(IP)=4. It is remarkable that the marked increase in $T_{\rm N}$ and the AFM moments for the IPs does not bring about any reduction in $T_c$, since $T_c\sim 100$ K is maintained for both compounds with nearly optimally doped OP. We highlight the fact that the SC order for $n\ge5$ is mostly dominated by the long-range in-plane SC correlation even in the multilayered structure, which is insensitive to the magnitude of $T_{\rm N}$ and the AFM moments at the IPs or the AFM interaction among the IPs. These results demonstrate a novel interplay between the SC and AFM orders when the charge imbalance between the IPs and OP is significantly large.

We investigate the in-plane anisotropy of Fe 3d orbitals occurring in a wide temperature and composition range of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 system. By employing the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the lifting of degeneracy in dxz and dyz orbitals at the Brillouin zone corners can be obtained as a measure of the orbital anisotropy. In the underdoped regime, it starts to evolve on cooling from high temperatures above both antiferromagnetic and orthorhombic transitions. With increasing x, it well survives into the superconducting regime, but gradually gets suppressed and finally disappears around the non-superconducting transition (x = 0.7). The observed spontaneous in-plane orbital anisotropy, possibly coupled with anisotropic lattice and magnetic fluctuations, implies the rotational-symmetry broken electronic state working as the stage for the superconductivity in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2.

Pressure effects on a recently discovered BiS2-based superconductor Bi2(O,F)S2 (Tc = 5.1 K) were examined via two different methods; high pressure resistivity measurement and high pressure annealing. The effects of these two methods on the superconducting properties of Bi2(O,F)S2 were significantly different although in both methods hydrostatic pressure is applied to the sample by the cubic-anvil-type apparatus. In high pressure resistivity measurement, Tc linearly decreased at the rate of -1.2 K GPa-1. In contrast, the Tc of 5.1 K is maintained after high pressure annealing under 2 GPa and 470°C of optimally doped sample despite significant change of lattice parameters. In addition, superconductivity was observed in fluorine-free Bi2OS2 after high pressure annealing. These results suggest that high pressure annealing would cause a unique effect on physical properties of layered compounds.

We have studied the anisotropy in the in-plane resistivity and the electronic structure of isovalent Ru-substituted BaFe$_2$As$_2$ in the antiferromagnetic-orthorhombic phase using well-annealed crystals. The anisotropy in the residual resistivity component increases in proportional to the Ru dopant concentration, as in the case of Co-doped compounds. On the other hand, both the residual resistivity and the resistivity anisotropy induced by isovalent Ru substitution is found to be one order of magnitude smaller than those induced by heterovalent Co substitution. Combined with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results, which show almost the same anisotropic band structure both for the parent and Ru-substituted compounds, we confirm the scenario that the anisotropy in the residual resistivity arises from anisotropic impurity scattering in the magneto-structurally ordered phase rather than directly from the anisotropic band structure of that phase.

In order to investigate in-plane anisotropy of magnetic form factor in the antiferromagnetic phase, the detwinned single crystal is used in the measurement. The magnetic structure factor and magnetic form factor are well explained by the spin densities consisting of $3d_{yz}$ electrons with a fraction of about 40~\% and the electrons in the other four $3d$ orbitals with each fraction of about 15~\%. Such anisotropic magnetic form factor is qualitatively consistent with the anisotropic magnetic behaviors observed in the antiferromagnetic phase of the parent compound of iron-based superconductor.

With the field along the c-axis, a nearly isotropic hexagonal VL was formed in the field range from 1 to 16 T, which is a record for this technique in the pnictides, and no symmetry changes in the VL were observed. The temperature-dependence of the VL signal was measured and confirms the presence of (non d-wave) nodes in the superconducting gap structure for measurements at 5 T and below. The nodal effects were suppressed at high fields. At low fields, a VL reorientation transition was observed between 1 T and 3 T, with the VL orientation changing by 45°. Below 1 T, the VL structure was strongly affected by pinning and the diffraction pattern had a fourfold symmetry. We suggest that this (and possibly also the VL reorientation) is due to pinning to defects aligned with the crystal structure, rather than being intrinsic.

We performed a Laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on a wide doping range of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (BaK) iron-based superconductor. We observed a robust low-binding energy (BE) kink structure in the dispersion which is doping dependent where its energy peaks at the optimally-doped (OP) level (x~0.4) and decreases towards the underdoped (UD) and overdoped (OD) sides. It is also temperature-dependent and survives up to ~90K. We attribute this kink to electron-mode coupling in good agreement with the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results on the same compound which observed a similar bosonic mode associated with spin excitations. The relation between the mode energy (Ω) and the SC transition temperature (Tc) deduced from our Laser ARPES data follow the universal relation deduced from INS and STM. In addition, we could resolve another kink at higher BE showing less doping and temperature dependence and may thus be of different origin.

Cooper pairing in the iron-based high-Tc superconductors is often conjectured to involve bosonic fluctuations. Among the candidates are antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations and d-orbital fluctuations amplified by phonons. Any such electron-boson interaction should alter the electron's `self-energy', and then become detectable through consequent modifications in the energy dependence of the electron's momentum and lifetime. Here we introduce a theoretical/experimental approach aimed at identifying the relevant fluctuations of iron-based superconductors by measuring effects of their self-energy. We use quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging techniques in LiFeAs to reveal strongly momentum-space anisotropic self-energy signatures that are focused along the Fe-Fe (interband scattering) direction, where the spin fluctuations of LiFeAs are concentrated. These effects coincide in energy with perturbations to the density-of-states N(ω) usually associated with the Cooper pairing interaction. We show that all the measured phenomena comprise the predicted QPI `fingerprint' of a self-energy due to antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations, thereby distinguishing them as the predominant electron-boson interaction.

Abstract:
We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of BaNi$_2$P$_2$ which shows a superconducting transition at $T_c$ $\sim$ 2.5 K. We observed hole and electron Fermi surfaces (FSs) around the Brillouin zone center and corner, respectively, and the shapes of the hole FSs dramatically changed with photon energy, indicating strong three-dimensionality. The observed FSs are consistent with band-structure calculation and de Haas-van Alphen measurements. The mass enhancement factors estimated in the normal state were $m^*$/$m_b$ $\leq$ 2, indicating weak electron correlation compared to typical iron-pnictide superconductors. An electron-like Fermi surface around the Z point was observed in contrast with BaNi$_2$As$_2$ and may be related to the higher $T_c$ of BaNi$_2$P$_2$.

Abstract:
We report measurements of ac magnetic susceptibility $χ_{ac}$ and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in KFe$_2$As$_2$ under high pressure up to 24.7 kbar. The pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ changes from negative to positive across $P_c \sim 18$ kbar as previously reported. The ratio of the upper critical field to $T_c$, i.e, $B_{c2} / T_c$, is enhanced…

The ratio of the upper critical field to $T_c$, i.e, $B_{c2} / T_c$, is enhanced above $P_c$, and the shape of $χ_{ac}$ vs field curves qualitatively changes across $P_c$. DHvA oscillations smoothly evolve across $P_c$ and indicate no drastic change in the Fermi surface up to 24.7 kbar. Three dimensionality increases with pressure, while effective masses show decreasing trends. We suggest a crossover from a nodal to a full-gap $s$ wave as a possible explanation.

The temperature, field, and field-orientation dependences of the electronic specific heat Ce of the ironpnictide superconductor KFe2As2 have been investigated. Thermodynamic evidence of the presence of line nodes is obtained from the T and $\sqrt{H}$ linear dependences of Ce/T in the low-T and low-H region. Under a magnetic field rotated within the tetragonal ab plane, a fourfold oscillation is observed in Ce with a sign change at 0.08Tc. On the basis of the Doppler-shift analysis, the observed Ce minima in H // [100] at low T indicate the presence of line nodes somewhere on the Fermi surface where the Fermi velocity is parallel to the [100] direction; this is consistent with the octet-line-node scenario proposed recently by a photoemission experiment. In addition, the low-T Ce/T exhibits an unusual upturn on cooling at moderate fields only for H // ab, which is understood in terms of the strong Pauli paramagnetic effect on multiband superconductivity.

We have investigated the elastic constant C33 of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 with eight different Co concentrations by ultrasonic measurement. We found remarkable elastic anomalies near the quantum critical point. We have studied them by measuring the electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and ultrasonic attenuation in addition to the elastic constant. These results have revealed that the inter-layer three-dimensional properties appearing in C33 to be possibly originated from the magnetic character of these materials. Our data about the elastic constant C33 highlight the importance of controlling the c-axis length in the emergence of superconductivity in iron-based superconductors.
