Vanadium dioxide (VO$_2$) is a strongly-correlated material that exhibits insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) near room temperature, which makes it a promising candidate for applications in nanophotonics or optoelectronics. However, creating VO$_2$ nanostructures with the desired functionality can be challenging due to microscopic inhomogeneities that can significantly impact the local optical and electronic properties. Thin lamellas, produced by focused ion beam milling from a homogeneous layer, provide a useful prototype for studying VO$_2$ at the truly microscopic level using a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). High-resolution imaging is used to identify structural inhomogeneities while electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) supported by statistical analysis helps to detect V$_x$O$_y$ stoichiometries with a reduced oxidation number of vanadium at the areas of thickness below 70 nm. On the other hand, the thicker areas are dominated by vanadium dioxide, where the signatures of IMT are detected in both core-loss and low-loss EELS experiments with in-situ heating. The experimental results are interpreted with ab-initio and semi-classical calculations. This work shows that structural inhomogeneities such as pores and cracks present no harm to the desired optical properties of VO$_2$ samples.

On the containment $I^{(3)} \subseteq I^2$ and configurations of triple points in Böröczky line arrangements
Authors:
Jakub Kabat
Abstract:
We study sets of triple points of Böröczky's arrangements of lines in the context of the containment problem proposed by Harbourne and Huneke. We show that in the class of those arrangements, the smallest counterexample to the containment $I^{(3)} \subseteq I^2$ is obtained when the number of lines is equal to 12.

Supersolvable resolutions of line arrangements
Authors:
Jakub Kabat
Abstract:
The main purpose of the present paper is to study the numerical properties of supersolvable resolutions of line arrangements. We provide upper-bounds on the so-called extension to supersolvability numbers for certain extreme line arrangements in $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ and we show that these numbers \textbf{are not} determined by the intersection lattice of the given arrangement.

High content imaging is needed to catalogue the variety of cellular phenotypes and multi-cellular ecosystems present in metazoan tissues. We recently developed Iterative Bleaching Extends multi-pleXity (IBEX), an iterative immunolabeling and chemical bleaching method that enables multiplexed imaging (>65 parameters) in diverse tissues, including human organs relevant for international consortia efforts. IBEX is compatible with over 250 commercially available antibodies, 16 unique fluorophores, and can be easily adopted to different imaging platforms using slides and non-proprietary imaging chambers. The overall protocol consists of iterative cycles of antibody labelling, imaging, and chemical bleaching that can be completed at relatively low cost in 2-5 days by biologists with basic laboratory skills. To support widespread adoption, we provide extensive details on tissue processing, curated lists of validated antibodies, and tissue-specific panels for multiplex imaging. Furthermore, instructions are included on how to automate the method using competitively priced instruments and reagents. Finally, we present a software solution for image alignment that can be executed by individuals without programming experience using open source software and freeware. In summary, IBEX is an open and versatile method that can be readily implemented by academic laboratories and scaled to achieve high content mapping of diverse tissues in support of a Human Reference Atlas or other such applications.

Abstract:
The purpose of this note is to present and study a new series of the so-called unexpected curves. They enjoy a surprising property to the effect that their degree grows to infinity, whereas the multiplicity at a general fat point remains constant, equal $3$, which is the least possible number appearing as the multiplicity of an unexpected curve at its singular point. We show that additionally the…

They enjoy a surprising property to the effect that their degree grows to infinity, whereas the multiplicity at a general fat point remains constant, equal $3$, which is the least possible number appearing as the multiplicity of an unexpected curve at its singular point. We show that additionally the BMSS dual curves inherits the same pattern of behaviour.

In this note we consider two configurations of twelve lines with nineteen triple points (i.e., points where three lines meet). Both of them have the same combinatorial features. In both configurations nine of twelve lines have five triple points and one double point, and the remaining three lines have four triple points and three double points. Taking the ideal of the triple points of these configurations we discover that, quite surprisingly, for one of the configurations the containment $I^{(3)} \subset I^2$ holds, while for the other it does not. Hence for ideals of points defined by configurations of lines the (non)containment of a symbolic power in an ordinary power is not determined alone by combinatorial features of the arrangement. Moreover, for the configuration with the non-containment $I^{(3)} \nsubseteq I^2$ we examine its parameter space, which turns out to be a rational curve, and thus establish the existence of a rational non-containment configuration of points. Such rational examples are very rare.

Abstract:
Böröczky configurations of lines have been recently considered in connection with the problem of the containment between symbolic and ordinary powers of ideals. Here we describe parameter families of Böröczky configurations of 13, 14, 16, 18 and 24 lines and investigate rational points of these parameter spaces.
