We present a description of the GBAR positron (e+) trapping apparatus, which consists of a three stage Buffer Gas Trap (BGT) followed by a High Field Penning Trap (HFT), and discuss its performance. The overall goal of the GBAR experiment is to measure the acceleration of the neutral antihydrogen (H) atom in the terrestrial gravitational field by neutralising a positive antihydrogen ion (H+), which has been cooled to a low temperature, and observing the subsequent H annihilation following free fall. To produce one H+ ion, about 10^10 positrons, efficiently converted into positronium (Ps), together with about 10^7 antiprotons (p), are required. The positrons, produced from an electron linac-based system, are accumulated first in the BGT whereafter they are stacked in the ultra-high vacuum HFT, where we have been able to trap 1.4(2) x 10^9 positrons in 1100 seconds.

Successfully synthesizing controllers for complex dynamical systems and specifications often requires leveraging domain knowledge as well as making difficult computational or mathematical tradeoffs. This paper presents a flexible and extensible framework for constructing robust control synthesis algorithms and applies this to the traditional abstraction-based control synthesis pipeline. It is grounded in the theory of relational interfaces and provides a principled methodology to seamlessly combine different techniques (such as dynamic precision grids, refining abstractions while synthesizing, or decomposed control predecessors) or create custom procedures to exploit an application's intrinsic structural properties. A Dubins vehicle is used as a motivating example to showcase memory and runtime improvements.

Translating continuous control system models into finite automata allows us to use powerful discrete tools to synthesize controllers for complex specifications. The abstraction construction step is unfortunately hamstrung by high runtime and memory requirements for high dimensional systems. This paper describes how the transition relation encoding the abstract system dynamics can be generated by connecting smaller abstract modules in series and parallel. We provide a composition operation and show that composing a collection of abstract modules yields another abstraction satisfying a feedback refinement relation. Through compositionality we circumvent the acute computational cost of directly abstracting a high dimensional system and also modularize the abstraction construction pipeline.

Distributed controllers are often necessary for a multi-agent system to satisfy safety properties such as collision avoidance. Communication and coordination are key requirements in the implementation of a distributed control protocol, but maintaining an all-to-all communication topology is unreasonable and not always necessary. Given a safety objective and a controller implementation, we consider the problem of identifying when agents need to communicate with one another and coordinate their actions to satisfy the safety constraint. We define a coordination-free controllable predecessor operator that is used to derive a subset of the state space that allows agents to act independently, without consulting other agents to double check that the action is safe. Applications are shown for identifying an upper bound on connection delays and a self-triggered coordination scheme. Examples are provided which showcase the potential for designers to visually interpret a system's ability to tolerate delays when initializing a network connection.

In this study, we propose pulsed laser deposition of a crystalline SrTiO3 thin film on a Si using graphene substrate. The SrTiO3 thin film on graphene has a highly (00l)-oriented crystalline structure which results from the partial epitaxy. Moreover, graphene promotes a sharp interface by highly suppressing the chemical intermixing. The important role of graphene as a 2D substrate and diffusion barrier allows expansion of device applications based on functional complex oxides.

Abstraction of a continuous-space model into a finite state and input dynamical model is a key step in formal controller synthesis tools. To date, these software tools have been limited to systems of modest size (typically $\leq$ 6 dimensions) because the abstraction procedure suffers from an exponential runtime with respect to the sum of state and input dimensions. We present a simple modification to the abstraction algorithm that dramatically reduces the computation time for systems exhibiting a sparse interconnection structure. This modified procedure recovers the same abstraction as the one computed by a brute force algorithm that disregards the sparsity. Examples highlight speed-ups from existing benchmarks in the literature, synthesis of a safety supervisory controller for a 12-dimensional and abstraction of a 51-dimensional vehicular traffic network.

We demonstrate that blending fluorinated molecules in PEDOT:PSS hole transport layers (HTL) induces charge transfers which impact on both charge extraction and photogeneration within organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. OPVs fabricated with modified HTL and two photoactive polymer blends led systematically to power conversion efficiencies (PCE) increases, with PTB7:PC70BM blend exhibiting PCE of ~ 8.3 %, i.e. ~ 15 % increase compared to pristine HTL devices. A reduced device-to-device characteristics variations was also noticed when fluorinated additives were used to modify the PEDOT:PSS. Shading lights onto the effect of HTL fluorination, we show that the morphology of the polymer:PCBM blends remains surprisingly unaffected by the fluorinated HTL surface energy but that, instead, the OPVs are impacted not only by the HTL electronic properties (work function, dipole layer, open circuit voltage, charge transfer dynamic) but also by alteration of the complex refractive indices (photogeneration, short circuit current density, external quantum efficiencies, electro-optic modelling). Both mechanisms find their origin in fluorination induced charge transfers. This work points towards fluorination as a promising strategy toward combining both external quantum efficiency modulation and power conversion efficiency enhancement in OPVs. Charge transfers could also be used more broadly to tune the optical constants and electric field distribution, as well as to reduce interfacial charge recombinations within OPVs.

We propose to synthesize a control policy for a Markov decision process (MDP) such that the resulting traces of the MDP satisfy a linear temporal logic (LTL) property. We construct a product MDP that incorporates a deterministic Rabin automaton generated from the desired LTL property. The reward function of the product MDP is defined from the acceptance condition of the Rabin automaton. This construction allows us to apply techniques from learning theory to the problem of synthesis for LTL specifications even when the transition probabilities are not known a priori. We prove that our method is guaranteed to find a controller that satisfies the LTL property with probability one if such a policy exists, and we suggest empirically with a case study in traffic control that our method produces reasonable control strategies even when the LTL property cannot be satisfied with probability one.

As a classical analogue of four-level tripod atomic system, the transmission spectrum of the composite metamaterial exhibits a double Fano-based coherent effect. Transfer of absorbed power between two superradiant oscillators is controlled by manipulating two coupling strengths conjugated through the polarization angle of a normally incident electromagnetic wave.

We investigate the effects of a localized constant wake and a localized linear wake on the longitudinal beam distribution in equilibrium. We also examine the effects of the composite wake on the particle distribution when the constant wake and linear wake simultaneously exist in the ring. While moving around the parameter space, the system can show bifurcation phenomena and transition features between periodic states. We study the dynamical states in a beam, using the multi-particle tracking method in a Gaussian approximation. They show good qualitative agreement.
