Bayes3D: fast learning and inference in structured generative models of 3D objects and scenes
Abstract: Robots cannot yet match humans' ability to rapidly learn the shapes of novel 3D objects and recognize them robustly despite clutter and occlusion. We present Bayes3D, an uncertainty-aware perception system for structured 3D scenes, that reports accurate posterior uncertainty over 3D object shape, pose, and scene composition in the presence of clutter and occlusion. Bayes3D delivers these capabilit… ▽ More

Nested open books and the binding sum
Abstract: We introduce the notion of a nested open book, a submanifold equipped with an open book structure compatible with an ambient open book, and describe in detail the special case of a push-off of the binding of an open book. This enables us to explicitly describe a natural open book decomposition of a fibre connected sum of two open books along their bindings, provided they are diffeomorphic and admi… ▽ More

Computing the Thurston-Bennequin invariant in open books
Abstract: We give explicit formulas and algorithms for the computation of the Thurston-Bennequin invariant of a nullhomologous Legendrian knot on a page of a contact open book and on contact Heegaard surfaces. Furthermore, we extend the results to rationally nullhomologous knots in arbitrary 3-manifolds.

The fundamental group of the space of contact structures on the 3-torus
Abstract: We show that the fundamental group of the space of contact structures on the 3-torus (based at the standard contact structure) is isomorphic to the integers.

Isotopy Classification of Engel Structures on Circle Bundles
Abstract: We call two Engel structures isotopic if they are homotopic through Engel structures by a homotopy that fixes the characteristic line field. In the present paper we define an isotopy invariant of Engel structures on oriented circle bundles over closed oriented three-manifolds and apply it to give an isotopy classification of Engel structures on circle bundles with characteristic line field tangent… ▽ More

Open books and exact symplectic cobordisms
Abstract: Given two open books with equal pages we show the existence of an exact symplectic cobordism whose negative end equals the disjoint union of the contact manifolds associated to the given open books, and whose positive end induces the contact manifold associated to the open book with the same page and concatenated monodromy. Using similar methods we show the existence of strong fillings for contact… ▽ More

Open book decompositions of fibre sums in contact topology
Abstract: In the present paper we describe compatible open books for the fibre connected sum along binding components of open books, as well as for the fibre connected sum along multi-sections of open books. As an application the first description provides simple ways of constructing open books supporting all tight contact structures on $T^3$, recovering a result by van Horn-Morris, as well as an open book… ▽ More

On prolongations of contact manifolds
Abstract: We apply spectral sequences to derive both an obstruction to the existence of $n$-fold prolongations and a topological classification. Prolongations have been used in the literature in an attempt to prove that every Engel structure on $M\times\mathbb{S}^1$ with characteristic line field tangent to the fibers is determined by the contact structure induced on a cross section and the twisting of the… ▽ More
