Weakly Parametric Pseudodifferential Calculus for Twisted $C^*$-dynamical Systems
Abstract: For a twisted $C^*$-dynamical system $(\mathscr{A},\mathbb{R}^n,α,e)$ over a unital $C^*$-algebra we establish a weakly parametric pseudodifferential calculus analogously to the celebrated weakly parametric calculus due to Grubb and Seeley. If the $C^*$-algebra $\mathscr{A}$ has an $α$-invariant trace then we prove an expansion of the resolvent trace (with respect to the dual trace on multipliers)… ▽ More

The product formula for regularized Fredholm determinants: two new proofs
Abstract: For an $m$-summable operator $A$ in a separable Hilbert space the higher regularized Fredholm determinant $\det\nolimits_m(I+A)$ generalizes the classical Fredholm determinant. Recently, Britz et al presented a proof of a product formula \[ \det\nolimits_m\bigl( (I+A)\cdot(I+B) \bigr) = \det\nolimits_m (I+A) \cdot \det\nolimits_m (I+B) \cdot \exp\operatorname{Tr}\bigl({X_m(A,B)}\bigr), \] wher… ▽ More

Zeta and Fredholm determinants of self-adjoint operators
Abstract: Let $L$ be a self-adjoint invertible operator in a Hilbert space such that $L^{-1}$ is $p$-summable. Under a certain discrete dimension spectrum assumption on $L$, we study the relation between the (regularized) Fredholm determinant, $\det_{p}(I+z\cdot L^{-1})$, on the one hand and the zeta regularized determinant, $\det_ζ(L+z)$, on the other. The eta-invariant, Maslov index, and spectral flow for Dirac-type operators on manifolds with boundary
Abstract: Several proofs have been published of the Mod Z gluing formula for the eta-invariant of a Dirac operator. However, so far the integer contribution to the gluing formula for the eta-invariant is left obscure in the literature. In this article we present a gluing formula for the eta-invariant which expresses the integer contribution as a triple index involving the boundary conditions and the Calde… ▽ More

On the number of square integrable solutions and self-adjointness of symmetric first order systems of differential equations
Abstract: The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the formal deficiency indices ${\cal N}_{\pm}(I)$ of a symmetric first order system $$ Jf'+Bf=λ{\cal H} f $$ on an interval $I$, where $I=\mathbb{R}$ or $I=\mathbb{R}_\pm.$ Here $J,B,{cal H}$ are $n\times n$ matrix valued functions and the Hamiltonian ${\cal H}\ge 0$ may be singular even everywhere. We obtain two results for such a system to have… ▽ More

Essential self-adjointness of symmetric linear relations associated to first order systems
Abstract: The purpose of this note is to present several criteria for essential self-adjointness. The method is based on ideas due to Shubin. This note is divided into two parts. The first part deals with symmetric first order systems on the line in the most general setting. Such a symmetric first order system of differential equations gives rise naturally to a symmetric linear relation in a Hilbert spa… ▽ More

On boundary value problems for Dirac type operators. I. Regularity and self-adjointness
Abstract: In a series of papers, we will develop systematically the basic spectral theory of (self-adjoint) boundary value problems for operators of Dirac type. We begin in this paper with the characterization of (self-adjoint) boundary conditions with optimal regularity, for which we will derive the heat asymptotics and index theorems in subsequent publications. Along with a number of new results, we ext… ▽ More

Determinants of regular singular Sturm-Liouville operators
Abstract: We consider a regular singular Sturm-Liouville operator $L:=-\frac{d^2}{dx^2} + \frac{q(x)}{x^2 (1-x)^2}$ on the line segment $[0,1]$. We impose certain boundary conditions such that we obtain a semi-bounded self-adjoint operator. It is known that the $ζ$-function of this operator $ζ_L(s)=\sum_{λ\in\spec(L)\setminus\{0\}} λ^{-s}$ has a meromorphic continuation to the whole complex plane with 0 b… ▽ More

Spectral theory of boundary value problems for Dirac type operators
Abstract: The purpose of this note is to describe a unified approach to the fundamental results in the spectral theory of boundary value problems, restricted to the case of Dirac type operators. Even though many facts are known and well presented in the literature (cf. the monograph of Booss-Wojciechowski), we simplify and extend or sharpen most results by using systematically the simple structure which D… ▽ More

On the L^2-Stokes theorem and Hodge theory for singular algebraic varieties
Abstract: For a projective algebraic variety $V$ with isolated singularities, endowed with a metric induced from an embedding, we consider the analysis of the natural partial differential operators on the regular part of $V$. We show that, in the complex case, the Laplacians of the de Rham and Dolbeault complexes are discrete operators except possibly in degrees $n,n\pm 1$, where $n$ is the complex dimens… ▽ More

The inverse spectral problem for first order systems on the half line
Abstract: On the half line $[0,\infty)$ we study first order differential operators of the form $B 1/i d/(dx) + Q(x)$, where $B:=\mat{B_1}{0}{0}{-B_2}$, $B_1,B_2\in M(n,\C)$ are self--adjoint positive definite matrices and $Q:\R_+\to M(2n,\C)$, $\R_+:=[0,\infty)$, is a continuous self-adjoint off-diagonal matrix function. Traces on algebras of parameter dependent pseudodifferential operators and the eta-invariant
Abstract: We identify Melrose's suspended algebra of pseudodifferential operators with a subalgebra of the algebra of parametric pseudodifferential operators with parameter space $\R$. For a general algebra of parametric pseudodifferential operators, where the parameter space may now be a cone $Γ\subset\R^p$, we construct a unique ``symbol valued trace'', which extends the $L^2$-trace on operators of smal… ▽ More

On the noncommutative residue for pseudodifferential operators with log-polyhomogeneous symbols
Abstract: We study various aspects of the noncommutative residue for an algebra of pseudodifferential operators whose symbols have an expansion $a\sim \sum_{j=0}^\infty a_{m-j}, a_{m-j}(x,ξ)=\sum_{l=0}^k a_{m-j,l}(x,ξ) \log^l|ξ|,$ where $a_{m-j,l}$ is homogeneous in $ξ$ of degree $m-j$. We will explain why this algebra of pseudodifferential operators is natural. For a pseudodifferential operator in this… ▽ More

On index formulas for manifolds with metric horns
Abstract: In this paper we discuss the index problem for geometric differential operators (Spin-Dirac operator, Gauß-Bonnet operator, Signature operator) on manifolds with metric horns. On the eta-invariant of certain nonlocal boundary value problems
Abstract: Motivated by the work of Vishik on the analytic torsion we introduce a new class of generalized Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary value problems. As an application we give another proof of the gluing formula for the eta invariant. Our class of boundary conditions contains as special… ▽ More

Differential operators of Fuchs type, conical singularities, and asymptotic methods
