We report the derivation of rate coefficients for the rotational (de-)excitation of PO$^+$ induced by collisions with H$_2$. The calculations were performed on a four-dimensional potential energy surface, obtained on top of highly accurate $ab$ $initio$ energy points. Preliminary tests pointed out the low influence of the coupling between $j=0$ and the higher rotational levels of H$_2$ on the cross sections values, thus allowing to neglect the rotational structure of H$_2$. On this basis, state-to-state collisional rate coefficients were derived for temperatures ranging from 5 to 200 K. Radiative transfer calculations have been used to model the recent observation of PO$^+$ in the G+0.693-0.027 molecular cloud, in order to evaluate the possible impact of non-LTE models on the determination of its physical conditions. The derived column density was found to be approximately $\sim 3.7\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$, which is 60\% (a factor of $\sim 1.7$) smaller than the previously LTE-derived value. Extensive simulations show that PO$^+$ low-$j$ rotational lines exhibit maser behavior at densities between $10^4$ and $10^6$ cm$^{-3}$, thus highlighting the importance of a proper treatment of the molecular collisions to accurately model PO$^+$ emissions in the interstellar medium.

The ${\rm H_2NC}$ radical is the high-energy metastable isomer of ${\rm H_2CN}$ radical, which has been recently detected for the first time in the interstellar medium towards a handful of cold galactic sources, besides a warm galaxy in front of the PKS 1830-211 quasar. These detections have shown that the ${\rm H_2CN}$/${\rm H_2NC}$ isomeric ratio, likewise the HCN/HNC ratio, might increase with the kinetic temperature ($T_{\rm kin}$), but the shortage of them in warm sources still prevents us to confirm this hypothesis and shed light about their chemistry. In this work, we present the first detection of ${\rm H_2CN}$ and ${\rm H_2NC}$ towards a warm galactic source, the G+0.693-0.027 molecular cloud (with $T_{\rm kin} > 70 \, {\rm K}$), using IRAM 30m observations. We have detected multiple hyperfine components of the $N_{K_\text{a}K_\text{c}} = 1_{01} - 0_{00}$ and $2_{02} - 1_{01}$ transitions. We derived molecular abundances with respect to ${\rm H_2}$ of (6.8$\pm$1.3)$\times 10^{-11}$ for ${\rm H_2CN}$ and of (3.1$\pm$0.7)$\times 10^{-11}$ for ${\rm H_2NC}$, and a ${\rm H_2CN}$/${\rm H_2NC}$ abundance ratio of 2.2$\pm$0.5. These detections confirm that the ${\rm H_2CN}$/${\rm H_2NC}$ ratio is $\gtrsim$2 for sources with $T_{\rm kin} > 70 \, {\rm K}$, larger than the $\sim$1 ratios previously found in colder cores ($T_{\rm kin}\sim10 \, {\rm K}$). This isomeric ratio dependence with temperature cannot be fully explained with the currently proposed gas-phase formation and destruction pathways. Grain surface reactions, including the ${\rm H_2NC} \rightarrow {\rm H_2CN}$ isomerization, deserve consideration to explain the higher isomeric ratios and ${\rm H_2CN}$ abundances observed in warm sources, where the molecules can be desorbed into the gas phase through thermal and/or shock-induced mechanisms.

The formyl cation (HCO+) is one of the most abundant ions in molecular clouds and plays a major role in the interstellar chemistry. For this reason, accurate collisional rate coefficients for the rotational excitation of HCO+ and its isotopes due to the most abundant perturbing species in interstellar environments are crucial for non-local thermal equilibrium models and deserve special attention. In this work, we determined the first hyperfine resolved rate coefficients of HC17O+ in collision with H2 (j=0). Indeed, despite no scattering calculations on its collisional parameters have been performed so far, the HC17O+ isotope assumes a prominent role for astrophysical modelling applications. Computations are based on a new four dimensional (4D) potential energy surface, obtained at the CCSD(T)-F12a/aug-cc-pVQZ level of theory. A test on the corresponding cross section values pointed out that, to a good approximation, the influence of the coupling between rotational levels of H2 can be ignored. For this reason, the H2 collider has been treated as a spherical body and an average of the potential based on five orientations of H2 has been employed for scattering calculations. State-to-state rate coefficients resolved for the HC17O+ hyperfine structure for temperature ranging from 5 to 100 K have been computed using recoupling techniques. This study provides the first determination of HC17O+/H2 inelastic rate coefficients directly computed from full quantum close-coupling equations, thus supporting the reliability of future radiative transfer modellings of HC17O+ in interstellar environments.

Nitriles play a key role as molecular precursors in prebiotic experiments based on the RNA-world scenario for the origin of life. These chemical compounds could have been partially delivered to the young Earth from extraterrestrial objects, stressing the importance of establishing the reservoir of nitriles in the interstellar medium. We report here the detection towards the molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027 of several nitriles, including cyanic acid (HOCN), and three C$_4$H$_3$N isomers (cyanoallene, CH$_2$CCHCN; propargyl cyanide, HCCCH$_2$CN; and cyanopropyne (CH$_3$CCCN), and the tentative detections of cyanoformaldehyde (HCOCN), and glycolonitrile (HOCH$_2$CN). We have also performed the first interstellar search of cyanoacetaldehyde (HCOCH$_2$CN), which was not detected. Based on the derived molecular abundances of the different nitriles in G+0.693-0.027 and other interstellar sources, we have discussed their formation mechanisms in the ISM. We propose that the observed HOCN abundance in G+0.693-0.027 is mainly due to surface chemistry and subsequent shock-induced desorption, while HCOCN might be mainly formed through gas-phase chemistry. In the case of HOCH$_2$CN, several grain-surface routes from abundant precursors could produce it. The derived abundances of the three C$_4$H$_3$N isomers in G+0.693-0.027 are very similar, and also similar to those previously reported in the dark cold cloud TMC-1. This suggests that the three isomers are likely formed through gas-phase chemistry from common precursors, possibly unsaturated hydrocarbons (CH$_3$CCH and CH$_2$CCH$_2$) that react with the cyanide radical (CN). The rich nitrile feedstock found towards G+0.693-0.027 confirms that interstellar chemistry is able to synthesize in space molecular species that could drive the prebiotic chemistry of the RNA-world.

Theories on the origins of life propose that early cell membranes were synthesized from amphiphilic molecules simpler than phospholipids such as fatty alcohols. The discovery in the interstellar medium (ISM) of ethanolamine, the simplest phospholipid head group, raises the question whether simple amphiphilic molecules are also synthesized in space. We investigate whether precursors of fatty alcohols are present in the ISM. For this, we have carried out a spectral survey at 7, 3, 2 and 1 mm toward the Giant Molecular Cloud G+0.693-0.027 located in the Galactic Center using the IRAM 30m and Yebes 40m telescopes. Here, we report the detection in the ISM of the primary alcohol n-propanol (in both conformers Ga-n-C3H7OH and Aa-n-C3H7OH), a precursor of fatty alcohols. The derived column densities of n-propanol are (5.5+-0.4)x10^13 cm^-2 for the Ga conformer and (3.4+-0.3)x10^13 cm^-2 for the Aa conformer, which imply molecular abundances of (4.1+-0.3)x10^-10 for Ga-n-C3H7OH and of (2.5+-0.2)x10^-10 for Aa-n-C3H7OH. We also searched for the AGa conformer of n-butanol (AGa-n-C4H9OH) without success yielding an upper limit to its abundance of <4.1x10^-11. The inferred CH3OH:C2H5OH:C3H7OH:C4H9OH abundance ratios go as 1:0.04:0.006:<0.0004 toward G+0.693-0.027, i.e. they decrease roughly by one order of magnitude for increasing complexity. We also report the detection of both syn and anti conformers of vinyl alcohol, with column densities of (1.11+-0.08)x10^14 cm^-2 and (1.3+-0.4)x10^13 cm^-2, and abundances of (8.2+-0.6)x10^-10 and (9.6+-3.0)x10^-11, respectively. The detection of n-propanol, together with the recent discovery of ethanolamine in the ISM, opens the possibility that precursors of lipids according to theories of the origin of life, could have been brought to Earth from outer space.

We discuss several viable formation routes through chemical reactions from precursors such as HCO, H$_2$CO, CHOH or CH$_2$CHOH. We also propose that this species might be an important precursor in the formation of glyceraldehyde (HOCH$_2$CHOHCHO) in the interstellar medium through combination with the hydroxymethylene (CHOH) radical.

The availability of up-to-date collisional data between this ion and the most abundant perturbing species in the interstellar medium is a critical resource in order to derive reliable values of its molecular abundance from astronomical observations. This work intends to provide improved scattering parameters for the HCO+ and He collisional system. We have tested the accuracy of explicitly correlated coupled-cluster methods for mapping the short- and long-range multi-dimensional potential energy surface of atom-ion systems. A validation of the methodology employed for the calculation of the potential well has been obtained from the comparison with experimentally derived bound-state spectroscopic parameters. Finally, by solving the close-coupling scattering equations, we have derived the pressure broadening and shift coefficients for the first six rotational transitions of HCO+ as well as inelastic state-to-state transition rates up to j = 5 in the 5-100 K temperature interval.

The molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027, located in the Galactic Centre, represents an excellent candidate to search for new isocyanates since it exhibits high abundances of the simplest ones, HNCO and CH$_3$NCO. After CH$_3$NCO, the next complex isocyanates are ethyl isocyanate (C$_2$H$_5$NCO) and vinyl isocyanate (C$_2$H$_3$NCO). Their detection in the ISM would enhance our understanding of the formation of these compounds in space. We have detected C$_2$H$_5$NCO and H$_2$NCO$^+$ towards G+0.693-0.027 (the former for the first time in the interstellar medium) with molecular abundances of (4.7$-$7.3)$\times$10$^{-11}$ and (1.0$-$1.5)$\times$10$^{-11}$, respectively. A ratio CH$_3$NCO / C$_2$H$_5$NCO = 8$\pm$1 is obtained; therefore the relative abundance determined for HNCO:CH$_3$NCO:C$_2$H$_5$NCO is 1:1/55:1/447, which implies a decrease by more than one order of magnitude going progressively from HNCO to CH$_3$NCO and to C$_2$H$_5$NCO. This is similar to what has been found for e.g. alcohols and thiols and suggests that C$_2$H$_5$NCO is likely formed on the surface of dust grains. In addition, we have obtained column density ratios of HNCO / NCO > 269, HNCO / H$_2$NCO$^+$ $\sim$ 2100 and C$_2$H$_3$NCO / C$_2$H$_5$NCO~<~4. A comparison of the Methyl~/~Ethyl ratios for isocyanates (-NCO), alcohols (-OH), formiates (HCOO-), nitriles (-CN) and thiols (-SH) is performed and shows that ethyl-derivatives may be formed more efficiently for the N-bearing molecules than for the O- and S-bearing molecules.

We have used the spectrum obtained from the ALMA 3mm spectral survey GUAPOS, with an angular resolution of 1.2"$\times$1.2" ($\sim$4500 au), to derive column densities of all the molecular species, together with other 0.2"$\times$0.2" ($\sim$750 au) ALMA observations to study the morphology of HNCO, HC(O)NH$_{2}$ and CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$. We have detected HNCO, HC(O)NH$_{2}$, CH$_{3}$NCO, CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$, and CH$_{3}$NHCHO, for the first time all together outside the Galactic center. We have obtained molecular fractional abundances with respect to H$_{2}$ from 10$^{-7}$ down to a few 10$^{-9}$ and with respect to CH$_{3}$OH from 10$^{-3}$ to $\sim$4$\times$10$^{-2}$. From the comparison with other sources, we find that regions in an earlier stage of evolution, such as pre-stellar cores, show abundances at least two orders of magnitude lower than those in hot cores, hot corinos or shocked regions. Moreover, molecular abundance ratios towards different sources are found to be consistent between them within $\sim$1 order of magnitude, regardless of the physical properties (e.g. different masses and luminosities), or the source position throughout the Galaxy. New correlations between pairs of molecular abundances have also been found. These results suggest that all these species are formed on grain surfaces in early evolutionary stages of molecular clouds, and that they are subsequently released back to the gas-phase through thermal desorption or shock-triggered desorption.

To date, observations were limited to ammonia (NH$_2$D, NHD$_2$, ND$_3$) and imidogen radical (ND) isotopologues. We want to explore the high frequency windows offered by the \emph{Herschel Space Observatory} to search for deuterated forms of amidogen radical NH$_2$ and to compare the observations against the predictions of our comprehensive gas-grain chemical model. Making use of the new molecular spectroscopy data recently obtained at high frequencies for NHD and ND$_2$, both isotopologues have been searched for in the spectral survey towards the class 0 IRAS 16293-2422, a source in which NH$_3$, NH and their deuterated variants have been previously detected. We used the observations carried out with HIFI (Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared) in the framework of the key program "Chemical Herschel surveys of star forming regions" (CHESS). We report the first detection of interstellar NHD and ND$_2$. Both species are observed in absorption against the continuum of the protostar. From the analysis of their hyperfine structure, accurate excitation temperature and column density values have been determined. The latter were combined with the column density of the parent species NH$_2$ to derive the deuterium fractionation in amidogen. The amidogen D/H ratio measured in the low-mass protostar IRAS 16293-2422 is comparable to the one derived for the related species imidogen and much higher than that observed for ammonia. Additional observations of these species will give more insights into the mechanism of ammonia formation and deuteration in the ISM. We finally indicate the current possibilities to further explore these species at submillimeter wavelengths.

This step is fundamental in order to properly evaluate the vibration-rotation partition function of aminoacetonitrile as well as the line strengths of the rotational transitions of its vibrationally excited states. This is necessary to derive accurate column densities and secure the identification of these transitions in astronomical spectra. The far-infrared ro-vibrational spectrum of aminoacetonitrile has been recorded in absorption against a synchrotron source of continuum emission. Three bands, corresponding to the lowest vibrational modes of aminoacetonitrile, were observed in the frequency region below 500 cm$^{-1}$. The combined analysis of ro-vibrational and pure rotational data allowed us to prepare new spectral line catalogs for all the states under investigation. We used the imaging spectral line survey ReMoCA performed with ALMA to search for vibrationally excited aminoacetonitrile toward Sgr B2(N1). On the basis of these spectroscopic predictions, we report the interstellar detection of aminoacetonitrile in its $v_{11}=1$ and $v_{18}=1$ vibrational states toward Sgr B2(N1) in addition to emission in its vibrational ground state. The intensities of the identified $v_{11}=1$ and $v_{18}=1$ lines are consistent with the detected $v=0$ lines under LTE at a temperature of 200 K for an aminoacetonitrile column density of $1.1 \times 10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$.

Chloromethane is the only organochloride detected in space to date. Its recent observation towards the low-mass protostar IRAS 16293-2422 with ALMA offers a prompt for new laboratory studies of CH$_3$Cl and its isotopologues. Here, we report the investigation of the rotational spectrum of monodeuterated chloromethane CH$_2$DCl in the frequency region between 90 and 300 GHz. The measurements have been carried out with a frequency-modulation millimeter-wave spectrometer, arranged to perform saturation spectroscopy. From the analysis of hyperfine-resolved spectra of the two chlorine isotopologues CH$_2$D$^{35}$Cl and CH$_2$D$^{37}$Cl, consistent sets of accurate spectroscopic parameters have been obtained. This work provides reliable spectral predictions which can be used to guide radio-astronomical searches of CH$_2$DCl in the interstellar medium and represents a solid base for future analyses of high-resolution infrared spectra of monodeuterated chloromethane.

Observations of ammonia in interstellar environments have revealed high levels of deuteration, and all its D-containing variants, including ND$_3$, have been detected in cold prestellar cores and around young protostars. The observation of these deuterated isotopologues is very useful to elucidate the chemical and physical processes taking place during the very early stages of star formation, as the abundance of deuterated molecules is highly enhanced in dense and cold gas. Nitrogen hydride radicals are key species lying at the very beginning of the reaction pathway leading to the formation of NH$_3$ and organic molecules of pre-biotic interest, but relatively little information is known about their D-bearing isotopologues. To date, only ND has been detected in the interstellar gas. To aid the identification of further deuterated nitrogen radicals, we have thoroughly re-investigated the rotational spectrum of NHD employing two different instruments: a frequency-modulation submillimetre spectrometer operating in the THz region and a synchrotron-based Fourier Transform infrared spectrometer operating in the 50-240 cm$^{-1}$ wavelength range. NHD was produced in a plasma of NH$_3$ and D$_2$. A wide range of rotational energy levels has been probed thanks to the observation of high $N$ (up to 15) and high $K_a$ (up to 9) transitions. A global analysis including our new data and those already available in the literature has provided a comprehensive set of very accurate spectroscopic parameters. A highly reliable line catalogue has been generated to assist archival data searches and future astronomical observations of NHD at submillimetre and THz regimes.

We present the study of deuteration of cyanoacetylene (HC$_3$N) towards a sample of 28 high-mass star-forming cores divided into different evolutionary stages, from starless to evolved protostellar cores. We report for the first time the detection of DC$_3$N towards 15 high-mass cores. The abundance ratios of DC$_3$N with respect HC$_3$N range in the interval 0.003$-$0.022, lower than those found in low-mas protostars and dark clouds. No significant trend with the evolutionary stage, or with the kinetic temperature of the region, has been found. We compare the level of deuteration of HC$_3$N with those of other molecules towards the same sample, finding weak correlation with species formed only or predominantly in gas phase (N$_2$H$^+$ and HNC, respectively), and no correlation with species formed only or predominantly on dust grains (CH$_3$OH and NH$_3$, respectively). We also present a single-dish map of DC$_3$N towards the protocluster IRAS 05358+3543, which shows that DC$_3$N traces an extended envelope ($\sim$0.37 pc) and peaks towards two cold condensations separated from the positions of the protostars and the dust continuum. The observations presented in this work suggest that deuteration of HC$_3$N is produced in the gas of the cold outer parts of massive star-forming clumps, giving us an estimate of the deuteration factor prior to the formation of denser gas.

The rotational spectrum of the most stable conformer of ethylene glycol (HO(CH$_2$)$_2$OH) has been recorded between 360-890 GHz using a frequency-modulation sub-millimeter spectrometer. The refinement and extension of the spectroscopic parameters over previous efforts provides predicted catalog frequencies for ethylene glycol with sufficient accuracy for comparison to high-frequency astronomical data. The improvement in the cataloged line positions, and the need for improved accuracy enabled by high-frequency laboratory work, is demonstrated by an analysis of ethylene glycol emission at 890 GHz in the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334I in ALMA Band 10 observations. The need for accurate rotational spectra at sub-millimeter wavelengths/THz frequencies is discussed.

The rotational spectrum of $^{15}$ND in its ground electronic $X^{3}Σ^{-}$ state has been observed for the first time. Forty-three hyperfine-structure components belonging to the ground and v = 1 vibrational states have been recorded with a frequency-modulation millimeter-/submillimeter-wave spectrometer. These new measurements, together with the ones available for the other isotopologues NH, ND, and $^{15}$NH, have been simultaneously analysed using the Dunham model to represent the ro-vibrational, fine, and hyperfine energy contributions. The least-squares fit of more than 1500 transitions yielded an extensive set of isotopically independent $U_{lm}$ parameters plus 13 Born--Oppenheimer Breakdown coefficients $Δ_{lm}$. As an alternative approach, we performed a Dunham analysis in terms of the most abundant isotopologue coefficients $Y_{lm}$ and some isotopically dependent Born--Oppenheimer Breakdown constants $δ_{lm}$ [R. J. Le Roy, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 194, 189 (1999)]. The two fits provide results of equivalent quality. The Born--Oppenheimer equilibrium bond distance for the imidogen radical has been calculated [$r_e^{BO}$ =103.606721(13) pm] and zero point energies have been derived for all the isotopologues.

C-cyanomethanimine (HNCHCN), existing in the two $Z$ and $E$ isomeric forms, is a key prebiotic molecule, but, so far, only the $E$ isomer has been detected toward the massive star-forming region. Sagittarius B2(N) using transitions in the radio wavelength domain. With the aim of detecting HNCHCN in Sun-like-star forming regions, the laboratory investigation of its rotational spectrum has been extended to the millimeter-/submillimeter-wave (mm-/submm-) spectral window in which several unbiased spectral surveys have been already carried out. High-resolution laboratory measurements of the rotational spectrum of C-cyanomethanimine were carried out in the 100-420 GHz range using a frequency-modulation absorption spectrometer. We then searched for the C-cyanomethanimine spectral features in the mm-wave range using the high-sensitivity and unbiased spectral surveys obtained with the IRAM 30-m antenna in the ASAI context, the earliest stages of star formation from starless to evolved Class I objects being sampled. For both the $Z$ and $E$ isomers, the spectroscopic work has led to an improved and extended knowledge of the spectroscopic parameters, thus providing accurate predictions of the rotational signatures up to $\sim$700 GHz. So far, no C-cyanomethanimine emission has been detected toward the ASAI targets, and upper limits of the column density of $\sim$ 10$^{11}$--10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ could only be derived. Consequently, the C-cyanomethanimine abundances have to be less than a few 10$^{-10}$ for starless and hot-corinos. A less stringent constraint, $\leq$ 10$^{-9}$, is obtained for shocks sites. The combination of the upper limits of the abundances of C-cyanomethanimine together with accurate laboratory frequencies up to $\sim$ 700 GHz poses the basis for future higher sensitivity searches around Sun-like-star forming regions.

The deuteration mechanism of molecules in the interstellar medium (ISM) is still being debated. Observations of deuterium-bearing species in several astronomical sources represent a powerful tool to improve our understanding of the interstellar chemistry. The doubly deuterated form of the astrophysically interesting Amidogen radical could be a target of detection in space. In this work, the rotational spectrum of the ND$_{2}$ radical in its ground vibrational and electronic $X^{2}B_{1}$ states has been investigated between 588 and 1131 GHz using a frequency modulation millimeter/submillimeter-wave spectrometer. The ND$_{2}$ has been produced in a free-space glass absorption cell by discharging a mixture of ND$_{3}$ and Ar. Sixty-four new transition frequencies involving $J$ values from 2 to 5 and $K_{a}$ values from 0 to 4 have been measured. A global analysis including all the previous field-free pure rotational data has been performed, allowing for a more precise determination of a very large number of spectroscopic parameters. Accurate predictions of rotational transition frequencies of ND$_{2}$ are now available from a few GHz up to several THz.

HC$_3$N is an ubiquitous molecule in interstellar environments, from external galaxies, to Galactic interstellar clouds, star forming regions, and planetary atmospheres. Observations of its rotational and vibrational transitions provide important information on the physical and chemical structure of the above environments. We present the most complete global analysis of the spectroscopic data of HC$_3$N. We have recorded the high-resolution infrared spectrum from 450 to 1350 cm$^{-1}$, a region dominated by the intense $ν_5$ and $ν_6$ fundamental bands, located at 660 and 500 cm$^{-1}$, respectively, and their associated hot bands. Pure rotational transitions in the ground and vibrationally excited states have been recorded in the millimetre and sub-millimetre regions in order to extend the frequency range so far considered in previous investigations. All the transitions from the literature and from this work involving energy levels lower than 1000 cm$^{-1}$ have been fitted together to an effective Hamiltonian. Because of the presence of various anharmonic resonances, the Hamiltonian includes a number of interaction constants, in addition to the conventional rotational and vibrational l-type resonance terms. The data set contains about 3400 ro-vibrational lines of 13 bands and some 1500 pure rotational lines belonging to 12 vibrational states. More than 120 spectroscopic constants have been determined directly from the fit, without any assumption deduced from theoretical calculations or comparisons with similar molecules. An extensive list of highly accurate rest frequencies has been produced to assist astronomical searches and data interpretation. These improved data, have enabled a refined analysis of the ALMA observations towards Sgr B2(N2).
