Analytic Approach for Computation of Topological Number of Integrable Vortex on Torus
Abstract: An analytic method to calculate the vortex number on a torus is constructed, focusing on analytic vortex solutions to the Chern-Simons-Higgs theory, whose governing equation is the so-called Jackiw-Pi equation. The equation is one of the integrable vortex equations and is reduced to Liouville's equation. The requirement of continuity of the Higgs field strongly restricts the characteristics and th… ▽ More

Mock-integrability and stable solitary vortices
Abstract: Localized soliton-like solutions to a $(2+1)$-dimensional hydro-dynamical evolution equation are studied numerically. The equation is so-called Williams-Yamagata-Flierl equation, which governs geostrophic fluid in a certain parameter range. Although the equation does not have an integrable structure in the ordinary sense, we find there exist shape-keeping solutions with very long life in a special… ▽ More

Symmetric calorons of higher charges and their large period limits
Abstract: Periodic instantons, also called calorons, are the BPS solutions to the pure Yang-Mills theories on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$. It is known that the calorons interconnect with the instantons and the BPS monopoles as the ratio of their size to the period of $S^1$ varies. We give, in this paper, the action density configurations of the $SU(2)$ calorons of higher instanton charges with several platonic… ▽ More

Cosmic strings in compactified gauge theory
Abstract: A solution of the vortex type is given in a six-dimensional $SU(2)\times U(1)$ pure gauge theory coupled to Einstein gravity in a compactified background geometry. We construct the solution of an effective abelian Higgs model in terms of dimensional reduction. The solution, however, has a peculiarity in its physically relevant quantity, a deficit angle, which is given as a function of the ratio of… ▽ More

Condensation of Yang-Mills field at High Temperature in the Presence of Fermions
Abstract: The possible condensation of the time-component of Yang-Mills field at finite temperature is discussed in the presence of Dirac fermions. We show that the condensation forms regardless of the number of fundamental and adjoint fermion species coupled to the Yang-Mills field. The effect of finite density of fermions is also investigated and it is shown that the magnitude of the condensation is also… ▽ More

Magnetically Charged Calorons with Non-Trivial Holonomy
Abstract: Instantons in pure Yang-Mills theories on partially periodic space $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ are usually called calorons. The background periodicity brings on characteristic features of calorons such as non-trivial holonomy, which plays an essential role for confinement/deconfinement transition in pure Yang-Mills gauge theory. For the case of gauge group $SU(2)$, calorons can be interpreted as comp… ▽ More

Phase Transition and String Formation in Six-Dimensional Gauge Theory
Abstract: We consider an SU(2) gauge theory in six-dimensions. We show that there exists non-trivial structure of gauge vacua in compactified background M4xS2. In this circumstances, there can exist a cosmic string, whose solution is recently constructed by the present authors. We consider the stage of the formation of the strings, i.e., the phase transition of the gauge configuration on the sphere in the `… ▽ More

Aharonov-Bohm Scattering by Vortices of Dimensionally-Reduced Yang-Mills Field
Abstract: If two dimensions of six-dimensional space-time are compactified, a topological configuration of Yang-Mills gauge field appears as a cosmic string in four dimensions, whose thickness is of the same order as the size of the compact space. We consider scattering of low-energy fermions by this object.

Atiyah-Manton Construction of Skyrmions in Eight Dimensions
Abstract: We show that the eight-dimensional instanton solution, which satisfies the self-duality equation $F \wedge F = *_8 F \wedge F$, realizes the static Skyrmion configuration in eight dimensions through the Atiyah-Manton construction. The relevant energy functional of the Skyrme field is obtained by the formalism developed by Sutcliffe. By comparing the Skyrmion olution associated with the extreme of… ▽ More

ADHM Construction of (Anti-)Self-dual Instantons in Eight Dimensions

We propose the general scheme to construct the (anti-)self-dual gauge field configurations $F \wedge F = \pm *_8 F \wedge F$ whose finite topological charges are given by the fourth Chern number. We show that our construction reproduces the known $\text{SO}(8)$ one-instanton solution. We also construct multi-instant… ▽ More

Double Compactification
Abstract: A cosmological scenario according to which our universe experienced space-time compactifications twice in its early development is investigated through toy models. In this scenario gauge configurations on an extra space play essential roles to bring about a change of the dimensionality of the compactified space. Simple models are offered and their behaviour at finite temperature is examined. A pos… ▽ More

The Universe as a Topological Defect in a Higher-Dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills Theory
Abstract: An interpretation is suggested that a spontaneous compactification of space-time can be regarded as a topological defect in a higher-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) theory. We start with $D$-dimensional EYM theory in our present analysis. A compactification leads to a $D-2$ dimensional effective action of Abelian gauge-Higgs theory. We find a "vortex" solution in the effective theory. Our un… ▽ More

Zero modes in vortex-fermion system with compact extra space
Abstract: The existence of fermionic zero modes is shown in the presence of vortex configuration of pure $SU(2)$ gauge field on the manifold $M_4 \times S^2$. From the perspective of four-dimensional effective theory, these zero modes are almost the same as the Jackiw-Rossi type zero modes of the vortex-fermion system.

Gauge Fields on Torus and Partition Function of Strings
Abstract: In this paper we consider the interrelation between compactified string theories on torus and gauge fields on it. We start from open string theories with background gauge fields and derive partition functions by path integral. Since the effects of background fields and compactification correlate only through string zero modes, we investigate these zero modes. From this point of view, we discuss th… ▽ More

Aspects of $C_3$-symmetric calorons from numerical Nahm transform
Abstract: Calorons are finite action solutions to the anti-selfdual Yang-Mills equations on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$. They are generally constructed by the so called Nahm construction. We perform the numerical Nahm transform for the Nahm data of 3-calorons with $C_3$-symmetry, which do not have the monopole limits. Dissimilar to the cases of having monopole limits, we can trace the zero-circumference limit… ▽ More

Sigma Model BPS Lumps on Torus

The variant of ADHMN construction associated with q-analysis
Abstract: A q-deformation of the ADHMN caloron construction is considered, under which the anti-selfdual (ASD) conditions of the gauge fields are preserved. It is shown that the q-dependent Nahm data with certain constraints are crucial to determine the ASD gauge fields, as in the case of ordinary caloron construction. As an application of the q-deformed ADHMN construction, we give a q-deformed caloron of… ▽ More
