We report the observation of a current-phase relation dominated by the second Josephson harmonic in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor junctions. The exotic current-phase relation is realized in the vicinity of a temperature-controlled 0-to-$π$ junction transition, at which the first Josephson harmonic vanishes. Direct current-phase relation measurements, as well as Josephson interferometry, non-vanishing supercurrent and half-integer Shapiro steps at the 0-$π$ transition self-consistently point to an intrinsic second harmonic term, making it possible to rule out common alternative origins of half-periodic behavior. While surprising for diffusive multimode junctions, the large second harmonic is in agreement with theory predictions for thin ferromagnetic interlayers.

We describe fabrication and testing of composite flux qubits combining Nb- and Al-based superconducting circuit technology. This hybrid approach to making qubits allows for employing pi-phase shifters fabricated using well-established Nb-based technology of superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junctions. The important feature here is to obtain high interface transparency between Nb and Al layers without degrading sub-micron shadow mask. We achieve this by in-situ Ar etching using e-beam gun. Shadow-evaporated Al/AlOx/Al Josephson junctions with Nb bias pads show the expected current-voltage characteristics with reproducible critical currents. Using this technique, we fabricated composite Nb/Al flux qubits with Nb/CuNi/Nb pi-shifters and measured their magnetic field response. The observed offset between the field responses of the qubits with and without pi-junction is attributed to the pi phase shift. The reported approach can be used for implementing a variety of hybrid Nb/Al superconducting quantum circuits.

The difference between the phases of superconducting order parameter plays in superconducting circuits the role similar to that played by the electrostatic potential difference required to drive a current in conventional circuits. This fundamental property can be altered by inserting in a superconducting circuit a particular type of weak link, the so-called Josephson $π$-junction having inverted current-phase relation and enabling a shift of the phase by $π$. We demonstrate the operation of three superconducting circuits -- two of them are classical and one quantum -- which all utilize such $π$-phase shifters realized using superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor sandwich technology. The classical circuits are based on single-flux-quantum cells, which are shown to be scalable and compatible with conventional niobium-based superconducting electronics. The quantum circuit is a $π$-phase biased qubit, for which we observe coherent Rabi oscillations and compare the measured coherence time with that of conventional superconducting phase qubits.

Improved high-resolution Bitter decoration technique was used to map the magnetic contrast on the top of the films well below the Curie temperature T$_{Curie}$ ($\sim$ 60 K). In contrast to magnetic force microscopy, this technique allowed visualization of the domain structure without its disturbance while the larger areas of the sample were probed. Maze-like domain patterns, typical for perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, were observed. The average domain width was found to be about 100 nm.

Superconductors separated by a thin tunneling barrier exhibit the Josephson effect that allows charge transport at zero voltage, typically with no phase shift between the superconductors in the lowest energy state. Recently, Josephson junctions with ground state phase shifts of pi proposed by theory three decades ago have been demonstrated. In superconducting loops, pi-junctions cause spontaneous circulation of persistent currents in zero magnetic field, analogous to spin-1/2 systems. Here we image the spontaneous zero-field currents in superconducting networks of temperature-controlled pi-junctions with weakly ferromagnetic barriers using a scanning SQUID microscope. We find an onset of spontaneous supercurrents at the 0-pi transition temperature of the junctions Tpi = 3 K. We image the currents in non-uniformly frustrated arrays consisting of cells with even and odd numbers of pi-junctions. Such arrays are attractive model systems for studying the exotic phases of the 2D XY-model and achieving scalable adiabatic quantum computers.

Vanishings of the critical current correspond to transitions into pi-state and back into conventional 0-state. The experimental data allow to extract the superconducting order parameter oscillation period and the pair decay length in the ferromagnet. We develope a theoretical approach based on Usadel equations, which takes into account the spin-flip scattering. Results of numerical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor (S-F-S) Josephson junctions were fabricated by making a narrow cut through a S-F double layer using direct writing by Focused Ion Beam (FIB). Due to a high resolution (spot size smaller than 10 nm) of FIB, junctions with a small separation between superconducting electrodes ($\leq$ 30 nm) can be made. Such a short distance is sufficient for achieving a considerable proximity coupling through a diluted CuNi ferromagnet. We have successfully fabricated and studied S-F-S (Nb-CuNi-Nb) and S-S'-S (Nb-Nb/CuNi-Nb) junctions. Junctions exhibit clear Fraunhofer modulation of the critical current as a function of magnetic field, indicating good uniformity of the cut. By changing the depth of the cut, junctions with the $I_c R_n$ product ranging from 0.5 mV to $\sim 1μ$V were fabricated.

We present measurements of the current-phase relation (CPR) of Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor (SFS) Josephson junctions as a function of temperature. The CPR is determined by incorporating the junction into a superconducting loop coupled to a dc SQUID, allowing measurement of the junction phase difference. Junctions fabricated with a thin (~ 22 nm) barrier of Cu0.47Ni0.53 sandwiched between Nb electrodes exhibit a re-entrant critical current with temperature, vanishing at T =T_pi ~ 2-4 K. We find that the critical current is negative for T < T_pi, indicating that the junction is a pi-Josephson junction. We find no evidence for second-order Josephson tunneling near T_pi in the CPR predicted by several theories.

The resistive properties of thin amorphous NbO_{x} films with weak pinning were investigated experimentally above and below the second critical field H_{c2}. As opposed to bulk type II superconductors with weak pinning where a sharp change of resistive properties at the transition into the Abrikosov state is observed at H_{c4}, some percent below H_{c2} (V.A.Marchenko and A.V.Nikulov, 1981), no qualitative change of resistive properties is observed down to a very low magnetic field, H_{c4} < 0.006 H_{c2}, in thin films with weak pinning. The smooth dependencies of the resistivity observed in these films can be described by paraconductivity theory both above and below H_{c2}. This means that the fluctuation superconducting state without phase coherence remains appreciably below H_{c2} in the two-dimensional superconductor with weak pinning. The difference the H_{c4}/H_{c2} values, i.e. position of the transition into the Abrikosov state, in three- and two-dimensional superconductors conforms to the Maki-Takayama result 1971 year according to which the Abrikosov solution 1957 year is valid only for a superconductor with finite dimensions. Because of the fluctuation this solution obtained in the mean field approximation is not valid in a relatively narrow region below H_{c2} for bulk superconductors with real dimensions and much below H_{c2} for thin films with real dimensions. The superconducting state without phase coherence should not be identified with the mythical vortex liquid because the vortex, as a singularity in superconducting state with phase coherence, can not exist without phase coherence.

We report a direct observation of the crossover of the superconductor- ferromagnet-superconductor (SFS) junctions to the π-state which manifests itself in the half-period shift of the external magnetic field dependence of the transport critical current in the triangular SFS arrays. It is associated with the appearance of spontaneous supercurrents in the array at zero external field, with the ground state degenerated with respect to the two possible current flow directions. In conventional Josephson arrays this state can be observed only by imposing frustrating external field equal to a half-integer number of magnetic quanta per cell.

With decreasing temperature $I_c$ generally increases, but for specific thicknesses of the ferromagnetic interlayer, a maximum is found followed by a strong decrease down to zero, after which $I_c$ rises again. Such a sharp cusp can only be explained by assuming that the junction changes from a 0-phase state at high temperatures to a $π$-phase state at low temperatures.

The excess conductivity is considered as a function of superconducting electron density and phase coherence length. It is shown that the transition to the Abrikosov state differs from the ideal case both in BiSrCaCuO and Nb_{1-x}O_{x} films, i.e. the appearance of long-range phase coherence is continuous transition in both cases. The quantitative difference between thin films with weak and strong disorders is greater than the one between layered HTSC and conventional superconductors, showing that the dimensionality of the system, rather than the critical temperature, is the key factor ruling fluctuation effects
