(Renyi Qu's Master's Thesis) Recent advancements in interpretable models for vision-language tasks have achieved competitive performance; however, their interpretability often suffers due to the reliance on unstructured text outputs from large language models (LLMs). This introduces randomness and compromises both transparency and reliability, which are essential for addressing safety issues in AI systems. We introduce \texttt{Hi-CoDe} (Hierarchical Concept Decomposition), a novel framework designed to enhance model interpretability through structured concept analysis. Our approach consists of two main components: (1) We use GPT-4 to decompose an input image into a structured hierarchy of visual concepts, thereby forming a visual concept tree. (2) We then employ an ensemble of simple linear classifiers that operate on concept-specific features derived from CLIP to perform classification. Our approach not only aligns with the performance of state-of-the-art models but also advances transparency by providing clear insights into the decision-making process and highlighting the importance of various concepts. This allows for a detailed analysis of potential failure modes and improves model compactness, therefore setting a new benchmark in interpretability without compromising the accuracy.

The characteristics of ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence in the presence of a magnetic island are numerically investigated using a gyrokinetic model. We observe that in the absence of the usual ITG drive gradient, a solitary magnetic island alone can drive ITG instability. The magnetic island not only drives high-n modes of ITG instability but also induces low-n modes of vortex flow. Moreover, as the magnetic island width increases, the width of the vortex flow also increases. This implies that wider islands may more easily induce vortex flows. The study further indicates that the saturated amplitude and transport level of MI-induced ITG turbulence vary with different magnetic island widths. In general, larger magnetic islands enhance both particle and heat transport. When the magnetic island is of the order of 21 times the ion gyroradius (21\{rho}_i), the turbulence-driven transport level can reach the same level in cases where ITG is driven by pressure gradients.

Quantum incompatibility is referred as the phenomenon that some quantum measurements cannot be performed simultaneously, and is also used in various quantum information tasks. However, it is still a challenge to certify whether a given set of multiple high-dimensional measurements respects a specific structure of incompatibility. To address this problem, we propose a modified quantum state discrimination protocol that decomposes complex compatibility structures into pair-wise ones and employs noise robustness to witness incompatibility structures. Our method is capable of detecting genuine $n$-wise incompatibility and some specific general compatibility structures, as demonstrated by our experimental verification of incompatibility structures of $4$ mutually unbiased bases in a qutrit system. The experimental results show that our approach is able to witness incompatibility structures, i.e., the hierarchy of quantum incompatibility resources.

The effect of island width on the multi-scale interactions between magnetic island (MI) and ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence has been investigated based on the global gyrokinetic approach. It is found that the coupling between the island and turbulence is enhanced when the MI width (w) becomes larger. A vortex flow that is highly sensitive to the width of the magnetic island can be triggered, ultimately resulting in a potent shear flow and a consequent reduction in turbulent transport. The shearing rate induced by the vortex flow is minimum at the O-point while it is maximum at both of the two reconnection points of the island, i.e., the X-points, regardless of the island width. There exists a nonmonotonic relationship between zonal flow (ZF) amplitude and island width, showing that the ZF is partially suppressed by medium-sized MIs whereas enhanced in the case of large island. A larger MI can tremendously damage the ITG mode structure, resulting in higher turbulent transport at the X-point whereas a lower one at the O-point, respectively. Such phenomenon will be less distinct at very small island widths below w/a =8% (a is the minor radius), where it shows that turbulence near the X-point is hardly affected although it is still suppressed inside the island. Furthermore, the influence of different island sizes on turbulence transport level is also discussed.

Background: The corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, is still localized outbreak and has resulted in a high rate of infection and severe disease in older patients with comorbidities. The vitamin D status of the population has been found to be an important factor that could influence outcome of COVID-19. However, whether vitamin D can lessen the symptoms or severity of COVID-19 still remains controversial. Methods: A total of 719 patients with confirmed COVID-19 were enrolled retrospectively in this study from April 13 to June 6, 2022 at Shanghai Forth People's Hospital. The circulating levels of 25(OH)D3, inflammatory factors, and clinical parameters were assayed. Time to viral RNA clearance (TVRC), classification and prognosis of COVID-19 were used to evaluate the severity of COVID-19 infection. Results: The median age was 76 years (interquartile range, IQR, 64.5-84.6), 44.1% of patients were male, and the TVRC was 11 days (IQR, 7-16) in this population. The median level of 25(OH)D3 was 27.15 (IQR, 19.31-38.89) nmol/L. Patients with lower serum 25(OH)D3 had prolonged time to viral clearance, more obvious inflammatory response, more severe respiratory symptoms and higher risks of impaired hepatic and renal function. Multiple regression analyses revealed that serum 25(OH)D3 level was negatively associated with TVRC independently. ROC curve showed the serum vitamin D level could predict the severity classification and prognosis of COVID-19 significantly. Conclusions: Serum 25(OH)D3 level is independently associated with the severity of COVID-19 in elderly, and it could be used as a predictor of the severity of COVID-19. In addition, supplementation with vitamin D might provide beneficial effects in old patients with COVID-19.

With the vigorous development of computer technology and the emergence of convolution depth neural network, the accuracy of prediction results has been improved. But, the depth, width of the network and image resolution are still important reasons that restrict the accuracy of the model and the prediction results. The main innovation of this paper is the combination of RESNET network and efficient net network, which not only greatly increases the network depth, but also comprehensively changes the choice of network width and image resolution, so as to make the model performance better, but also save computing resources as much as possible. The experimental results also show that our proposed model obtains the optimal prediction results. Specifically, the loss value of our method is separately 4 less and 2.1 less than that of resnet and efficientnet method.

The news is full of our life. Therefore, news headlines classification is a crucial task to connect users with the right news. The news headline classification is a kind of text classification, which can be generally divided into three mainly parts: feature extraction, classifier selection, and evaluations. In this article, we use the dataset, containing news over a period of eighteen years provided by Kaggle platform to classify news headlines. We choose TF-IDF to extract features and neural network as the classifier, while the evaluation metrics is accuracy. From the experiment result, it is obvious that our NN model has the best performance among these models in the metrics of accuracy. The higher the accuracy is, the better performance the model will gain. Our NN model owns the accuracy 0.8622, which is highest accuracy among these four models. This paper proposes an efficient federated distillation learning system (EFDLS) for multi-task time series classification (TSC). EFDLS consists of a central server and multiple mobile users, where different users may run different TSC tasks. EFDLS has two novel components, namely a feature-based student-teacher (FBST) framework and a distance-based weights matching (DBWM) scheme. Within each user, the FBST framework transfers knowledge from its teacher's hidden layers to its student's hidden layers via knowledge distillation, with the teacher and student having identical network structure. For each connected user, its student model's hidden layers' weights are uploaded to the EFDLS server periodically. The DBWM scheme is deployed on the server, with the least square distance used to measure the similarity between the weights of two given models. This scheme finds a partner for each connected user such that the user's and its partner's weights are the closest among all the weights uploaded. The server exchanges and sends back the user's and its partner's weights to these two users which then load the received weights to their teachers' hidden layers. Experimental results show that the proposed EFDLS achieves excellent performance on a set of selected UCR2018 datasets regarding top-1 accuracy.

For example, one may be an expert in the natural language processing (NLP) domain but want to determine the best order to learn new concepts in an unfamiliar Computer Vision domain (CV). Both domains share some common concepts, such as machine learning basics and deep learning models. In this paper, we propose unsupervised cross-domain concept prerequisite chain learning using an optimized variational graph autoencoder. Our model learns to transfer concept prerequisite relations from an information-rich domain (source domain) to an information-poor domain (target domain), substantially surpassing other baseline models. Also, we expand an existing dataset by introducing two new domains: CV and Bioinformatics (BIO). The annotated data and resources, as well as the code, will be made publicly available.

Quantum teleportation is a useful quantum information technology to transmit quantum states between different degrees of freedom. We here report a quantum state transfer experiment in the linear optical system, transferring a single photon state in the polarization degree of freedom (DoF) to another photon in the orbital angular momentum (OAM) quantum state via a biphoton OAM entangled channel. Our experimental method is based on quantum teleportation technology. The differences between ours and the original teleportation scheme is that the transfer state is known in ours, and our method is for different particles with different DoFs while the original one is for different particles with same DoF. Besides, our present experiment is implemented with a high Bell-efficiency since each of the four hybrid-entangled Bell states can be discriminated. We use six states of poles of the Bloch sphere to test our experiment, and the fidelity of the quantum state transfer is $91.8\pm1.3\%$.

Capturing complex high-order interactions among data is an important task in many scenarios. A common way to model high-order interactions is to use hypergraphs whose topology can be mathematically represented by tensors. Existing methods use a fixed-order tensor to describe the topology of the whole hypergraph, which ignores the divergence of different-order interactions. In this work, we take this divergence into consideration, and propose a multi-order hypergraph Laplacian and the corresponding total variation. Taking this total variation as a regularization term, we can utilize the topology information contained by it to smooth the hypergraph signal. This can help distinguish different-order interactions and represent high-order interactions accurately.

One of the most often implied benefits of high-dimensional (HD) quantum systems is to lead to stronger forms of correlations, featuring increased robustness to noise. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the $n$-setting linear HD quantum steering criterion. We verify the large violation of the steering inequalities without full-state tomography. The lower bound of the violation is $2.24\pm0.01$ in 11 dimensions, exceeding the bound ($V<2$) of 2-setting criteria. Hence, a higher strength of steering has been revealed. Moreover, we demonstrate the method for enhancing the noise robustness without increasing dimension, alternatively, by increasing measurement settings. Using the entanglement in 11 dimensions, we experimentally retrieve steering nonlocality with $63.4\pm1.4\%$ isotropic noise fraction, surpassing the $50\%$ limitation of 2-setting criteria. Our work offers the potential for practical one-sided device-independent quantum information processing that tolerates the noisy environment, lossy detection, and transcends the present transmission distance limitation.

Full truckload transportation (FTL) in the form of freight containers represents one of the most important transportation modes in international trade. Due to large volume and scale, in FTL, delivery time is often less critical but cost and service quality are crucial. Therefore, efficiently solving large scale multiple shift FTL problems is becoming more and more important and requires further research. In one of our earlier studies, a set covering model and a three-stage solution method were developed for a multi-shift FTL problem. This paper extends the previous work and presents a significantly more efficient approach by hybridising pricing and cutting strategies with metaheuristics (a variable neighbourhood search and a genetic algorithm). The metaheuristics were adopted to find promising columns (vehicle routes) guided by pricing and cuts are dynamically generated to eliminate infeasible flow assignments caused by incompatible commodities. Computational experiments on real-life and artificial benchmark FTL problems showed superior performance both in terms of computational time and solution quality, when compared with previous MIP based three-stage methods and two existing metaheuristics. The proposed cutting and heuristic pricing approach can efficiently solve large scale real-life FTL problems.

Rejecting the null hypothesis in two-sample testing is a fundamental tool for scientific discovery. Yet, aside from concluding that two samples do not come from the same probability distribution, it is often of interest to characterize how the two distributions differ. Given samples from two densities $f_1$ and $f_0$, we consider the task of localizing occurrences of the inequality $f_1 > f_0$. To avoid the challenges associated with high-dimensional space, we propose a general hypothesis testing framework where hypotheses are formulated adaptively to the data by conditioning on the combined sample from the two densities. We then investigate a special case of this framework where the notion of locality is captured by a random walk on a weighted graph constructed over this combined sample. We derive a tractable testing procedure for this case employing a type of scan statistic, and provide non-asymptotic lower bounds on the power and accuracy of our test to detect whether $f_1>f_0$ in a local sense. Furthermore, we characterize the test's consistency according to a certain problem-hardness parameter, and show that our test achieves the minimax detection rate for this parameter. We conduct numerical experiments to validate our method, and demonstrate our approach on two real-world applications: detecting and localizing arsenic well contamination across the United States, and analyzing two-sample single-cell RNA sequencing data from melanoma patients.

Aharonov, Jones, and Landau [Algorithmica 55, 395 (2009)] have presented a polynomial quantum algorithm for approximating the Jones polynomial. We investigate the bipartite entanglement properties in AJL's algorithm for three-strand braids. We re-describe AJL's algorithm as an equivalent algorithm which involves three work qubits in some mixed state coupled to a single control qubit. Furthermore, we use the Peres entanglement criterion to study the entanglement features of the state before measurements present in the re-described algorithm for all bipartitions. We show that the state is a product state relative to the bipartition between the first work qubit and the others. And it has no entanglement between the control qubit and work ones. We also prove a sufficient and necessary condition for its entanglement between the second (third) work qubit and the others. Moreover, we discuss the relation between its bipartite entanglement and elementary crossings in the three-strand braid group. We find that braids whose trace closures are topologically identical may have different entanglement properties in AJL's algorithm.

We first show an example of a new quantum error correction scheme which can not be described by operation quantum error correction. Then we introduce a different notion of noiseless subsystems according to the example. Base on this notion, we present a more unified approach which incorporates operator quantum error correction as a special case. Moreover, we also give a sufficient and necessary condition of quantum error correction using this approach. A tunable high resolution frequency reference is constructed using the narrowed cavity-linewidth by the optical pumping-assisted V-type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). At room temperature, the optical pumping effect will increase the transparency for the V-type EIT and therefore the cavity-linewidth can be narrowed apparently. For the seven EITs observed in our previous study, cavity-linewidth narrowing is observed in all of them. More importantly, we find that the cavity-linewidth can keep at 1.2MHz in a wide frequency range of 100MHz by utilizing the central EIT. This property provides a novel way for constructing high resolution tunable frequency reference via the intracavity EIT.

Our results show that the W state of four and more qubits cannot be prepared by using LME states under SLOCC. However, for three qubits some special LME states can be used to prepare the W state under SLOCC.

We investigate some properties of multipartite entanglement of hypergraph states in purely hypergraph theoretical terms. We first introduce an approach for computing the concurrence between two specific qubits of a hypergraph state by using the so-called Hamming weights of several special subhypergraphs of the corresponding hypergraph. Then we quantify and characterize bipartite entanglement between each qubit pair of several special hypergraph states in terms of the concurrence obtained by using the above approach. Our main results include that (i) a graph g has a component with the vertex set {i,j} if and only if the qubit pair labeled by {i,j} of the graph state |g> is entangled; and (ii) each qubit pair of a special hypergraph state is entangled like the generalized W state.

Based on their study, we first extend the axiomatic framework to hypergraphs by means of modifying its axioms and consistency conditions. Then we use the axiomatic approach to encode hypergraphs into a new family of quantum states, called the hypergraph states. Moreover, we also try to do the followings: (i) to show that real equally weighted states, which occur in Grover and Deutsch-Joza algorithms, are equivalent to hypergraph states; (ii) to describe the relations among hypergraph states, graph states and stabilizer states; (iii) to provide some transformation rules, stated in purely hypergraph theoretical terms, which completely characterize the evolution of hypergraph states under some local operations, including operators in Pauli group and some special local Pauli measurements; and (iv) to investigate some properties of multipartite entanglement of hypergraph states by hypergraph theory.

We firstly investigate the multipartite entanglement features of the quantum states, including the iteration states achieved by repeated application of Grover iteration and the Oracle ones into which the above iteration states evolve by applying single Oracle operation, employed in Grover's search algorithm by means of the separable degree and the entanglement measure. Then we give the quantitative and qualitative descriptions of the entanglement dynamics in Grover's search algorithm. Our results show that for most instances (i) the separable degrees of these states and ranges of their maximum Schmidt numbers are invariable by following the dynamics of Grover's search algorithm; (ii) the dynamics of Grover's search algorithm is almost "filled" by the fully entangled states.

In this paper, we investigate the hybridization of constraint programming and local search techniques within a large neighbourhood search scheme for solving highly constrained nurse rostering problems. As identified by the research, a crucial part of the large neighbourhood search is the selection of the fragment (neighbourhood, i.e. the set of variables), to be relaxed and re-optimized iteratively. The success of the large neighbourhood search depends on the adequacy of this identified neighbourhood with regard to the problematic part of the solution assignment and the choice of the neighbourhood size. We investigate three strategies to choose the fragment of different sizes within the large neighbourhood search scheme. The first two strategies are tailored concerning the problem properties. The third strategy is more general, using the information of the cost from the soft constraint violations and their propagation as the indicator to choose the variables added into the fragment. The three strategies are analyzed and compared upon a benchmark nurse rostering problem. Promising results demonstrate the possibility of future work in the hybrid approach.

Previous research has shown that artificial immune systems can be used to produce robust schedules in a manufacturing environment. The main goal is to develop building blocks (antibodies) of partial schedules that can be used to construct backup solutions (antigens) when disturbances occur during production. The building blocks are created based upon underpinning ideas from artificial immune systems and evolved using a genetic algorithm (Phase I). Each partial schedule (antibody) is assigned a fitness value and the best partial schedules are selected to be converted into complete schedules (antigens). We further investigate whether simulated annealing and the great deluge algorithm can improve the results when hybridised with our artificial immune system (Phase II). We use ten fixed solutions as our target and measure how well we cover these specific scenarios.
