The $D^{*}$ polarization fraction $F_{L}^{D^{*}}$ is measured in two $q^{2}$ regions, below and above 7 GeV$^{2}/c^{4}$, where $q^{2}$ is defined as the squared invariant mass of the $τν_τ$ system. The $F_{L}^{D^{*}}$ values are measured to be $0.51 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.03$ and $0.35 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.02$ for the lower and higher $q^{2}$ regions, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The average value over the whole $q^{2}$ range is: $$F_{L}^{D^{*}} = 0.43 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03.$$ These results are compatible with the Standard Model predictions.

Momentum measurements for very high momentum charged particles, such as muons from electroweak vector boson decays, are particularly susceptible to charge-dependent curvature biases that arise from misalignments of tracking detectors. Low momentum charged particles used in alignment procedures have limited sensitivity to coherent displacements of such detectors, and therefore are unable to fully constrain these misalignments to the precision necessary for studies of electroweak physics. Additional approaches are therefore required to understand and correct for these effects. In this paper the curvature biases present at the LHCb detector are studied using the pseudomass method in proton-proton collision data recorded at centre of mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV during 2016, 2017 and 2018. The biases are determined using $Z\toμ^+μ^-$ decays in intervals defined by the data-taking period, magnet polarity and muon direction. Correcting for these biases, which are typically at the $10^{-4}$ GeV$^{-1}$ level, improves the $Z\toμ^+μ^-$ mass resolution by roughly 18% and eliminates several pathological trends in the kinematic-dependence of the mean dimuon invariant mass.

The fraction of $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ decays in the prompt $J/ψ$ yield, $F_{χc}=σ_{χ_c \to J/ψ}/σ_{J/ψ}$, is measured by the LHCb detector in pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.16$ TeV. The study covers the forward ($1.5<y^*<4.0$) and backward ($-5.0<y^*<-2.5$) rapidity regions, where $y^*$ is the $J/ψ$ rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass system. Forward and backward rapidity samples correspond to integrated luminosities of 13.6 $\pm$ 0.3 nb$^{-1}$ and 20.8 $\pm$ 0.5 nb$^{-1}$, respectively. The result is presented as a function of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum $p_{T,J/ψ}$ in the range 1$<p_{T, J/ψ}<20$ GeV/$c$. The $F_{χc}$ fraction at forward rapidity is compatible with the LHCb measurement performed in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV, whereas the result at backward rapidity is 2.4 $σ$ larger than in the forward region for $1<p_{T, J/ψ}<3$ GeV/$c$. The increase of $F_{χc}$ at low $p_{T, J/ψ}$ at backward rapidity is compatible with the suppression of the $ψ$(2S) contribution to the prompt $J/ψ$ yield. The lack of in-medium dissociation of $χ_c$ states observed in this study sets an upper limit of 180 MeV on the free energy available in these pPb collisions to dissociate or inhibit charmonium state formation.

A search for $\textit{CP}$ violation in $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} π^{-} $ and $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{-} π^{+} $ decays is reported. The search is performed using an unbinned model-independent method known as the energy test that probes local $\textit{CP}$ violation in the phase space of the decays. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of $5.4~$fb$^{-1}$ collected in proton-proton collisions by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$~TeV, amounting to approximately 950 thousand and 620 thousand signal candidates for the $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{-} π^{+} $ and $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} π^{-} $ modes, respectively. The method is validated using $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-} π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} $ and $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-} $ decays, where $\textit{CP}$-violating effects are expected to be negligible, and using background-enhanced regions of the signal decays. The results are consistent with $\textit{CP}$ symmetry in both the $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{-} π^{+} $ and the $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} π^{-} $ decays, with $p$-values for the hypothesis of no $\textit{CP}$ violation of 70% and 66%, respectively.

Proton-proton collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of $5.02$ and $13~{\rm TeV}$, and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of $8.16~{\rm TeV}$. The studies are performed in center-of-mass rapidity regions $2.5<y_{\rm c.m.}<3.5$ (forward rapidity) and $-4.0<y_{\rm c.m.}<-3.0$ (backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The $η$ and $η'$ production cross sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum for $1.5<p_{\rm T}<10~{\rm GeV}$ and $3<p_{\rm T}<10~{\rm GeV}$, respectively. The differential cross sections are used to calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for $η$ and $η'$ mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of $η$ mesons are also used to calculate $η/π^0$ cross section ratios, which show evidence of a deviation from the world average. These studies offer new constraints on mass-dependent nuclear effects in heavy-ion collisions, as well as $η$ and $η'$ meson fragmentation.

We propose a novel approach to numerically approximate McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equations (MV-SDE) using stochastic gradient descent (SGD) while avoiding the use of interacting particle systems. The technique of SGD is deployed to solve a Euclidean minimization problem, which is obtained by first representing the MV-SDE as a minimization problem over the set of continuous functions of time, and then by approximating the domain with a finite-dimensional subspace. Convergence is established by proving certain intermediate stability and moment estimates of the relevant stochastic processes (including the tangent ones). Numerical experiments illustrate the competitive performance of our SGD based method compared to the IPS benchmarks. This work offers a theoretical foundation for using the SGD method in the context of numerical approximation of MV-SDEs, and provides analytical tools to study its stability and convergence.

In this small note, we establish Malliavin differentiability of McKean-Vlasov Stochastic Differential Equations (MV-SDEs) with drifts satisfying both a locally Lipschitz and a one-sided Lipschitz assumption, and where the diffusion coefficient is assumed to be uniformly Lipschitz in its variables. As a secondary contribution, we investigate how Malliavin differentiability transfers across to the interacting particle system associated with the McKean-Vlasov equation to its limiting equation. This final result requires both spatial and measure differentiability of the coefficients and doubles as a standalone result of independent interest since the study of Malliavin derivatives of weakly interacting particle systems seems novel to the literature.

The production rate of $Λ_{b}^{0}$ baryons relative to $B^{0}$ mesons in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of $Λ_{b}^{0}$ to $B^{0}$ production cross-sections shows a significant dependence on both the transverse momentum and the measured charged-particle multiplicity. At low multiplicity, the ratio measured at LHCb is consistent with the value measured in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions, and increases by a factor of $\sim2$ with increasing multiplicity. At relatively low transverse momentum, the ratio of $Λ_{b}^{0}$ to $B^{0}$ cross-sections is higher than what is measured in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions, but converges with the $e^{+}e^{-}$ ratio as the momentum increases. These results imply that the evolution of heavy $b$ quarks into final-state hadrons is influenced by the density of the hadronic environment produced in the collision. Comparisons with several models and implications for the mechanisms enforcing quark confinement are discussed.

The identification of helium nuclei at LHCb is achieved using a method based on measurements of ionisation losses in the silicon sensors and timing measurements in the Outer Tracker drift tubes. The background from photon conversions is reduced using the RICH detectors and an isolation requirement. The method is developed using $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13\,{\rm TeV}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment in the years 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.5\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$. A total of around $10^5$ helium and antihelium candidates are identified with negligible background contamination. The helium identification efficiency is estimated to be approximately $50\%$ with a corresponding background rejection rate of up to $\mathcal O(10^{12})$. These results demonstrate the feasibility of a rich programme of measurements of QCD and astrophysics interest involving light nuclei.

The upgraded Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests (FACET-II) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory has been designed to deliver ultra-relativistic electron and positron beams with unprecedented parameters, especially in terms of high peak current and low emittance. For most of the foreseen experimental campaigns hosted at this facility, the high energy radiation produced by these beams at the Interaction Point will be a valuable diagnostic to assess the different physical processes under study. This article describes the X-ray and γ-ray detectors installed for the initial phase of FACET-II. Furthermore, experimental measurements obtained with these detectors during the first commissioning and user runs are presented and discussed, illustrating the working principles and potential applications of these detectors.

A measurement of the $CP$-violating observables from $B^{\pm}\rightarrow D^* K^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm}\rightarrow D^* π^{\pm}$ decays is presented, where $D^* (D) $ is an admixture of $D^{*0}$ and $\bar{D}^{*0}$ ($D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$) states and is reconstructed through the decay chains $ D^* \rightarrow Dπ^0/γ$ and $D \to K_S^0 π^+π^-/K_S^0 K^+K^-$. The measurement is performed by analysing the signal yield variation across the $D$ decay phase space and is independent of any amplitude model. The data sample used was collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions and corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The CKM angle $γ$ is determined to be $(69^{+13}_{-14})^{\circ}$ using the measured $CP$-violating observables. The hadronic parameters $r^{D^* K^{\pm}}_B, r^{D^* π^{\pm}}_B, δ^{D^* K^{\pm}}_B, δ^{D^* π^{\pm}}_B$, which are the ratios and strong phase differences between favoured and suppressed $B^{\pm}$ decays, are also reported.

Density functional theory (DFT) stands as a cornerstone method in computational quantum chemistry and materials science due to its remarkable versatility and scalability. Yet, it suffers from limitations in accuracy, particularly when dealing with strongly correlated systems. To address these shortcomings, recent work has begun to explore how machine learning can expand the capabilities of DFT; an endeavor with many open questions and technical challenges. In this work, we present Grad DFT: a fully differentiable JAX-based DFT library, enabling quick prototyping and experimentation with machine learning-enhanced exchange-correlation energy functionals. Grad DFT employs a pioneering parametrization of exchange-correlation functionals constructed using a weighted sum of energy densities, where the weights are determined using neural networks. Moreover, Grad DFT encompasses a comprehensive suite of auxiliary functions, notably featuring a just-in-time compilable and fully differentiable self-consistent iterative procedure. To support training and benchmarking efforts, we additionally compile a curated dataset of experimental dissociation energies of dimers, half of which contain transition metal atoms characterized by strong electronic correlations. The software library is tested against experimental results to study the generalization capabilities of a neural functional across potential energy surfaces and atomic species, as well as the effect of training data noise on the resulting model accuracy.

The data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $(1.58\pm0.02)\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ is collected by the LHCb experiment at the LHC. The differential production cross-sections are measured using $D^+$ and $D^+_{s}$ candidates with transverse momentum in the range of $0<p_{\mathrm{T}} <14\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ and rapidities in the ranges of $1.5<y^*<4.0$ and $-5.0<y^*<-2.5$ in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system. For both particles, the nuclear modification factor and the forward-backward production ratio are determined. These results are compared with theoretical models that include initial-state nuclear effects. In addition, measurements of the cross-section ratios between $D^+$, $D^+_{s}$ and $D^0$ mesons are presented, providing a baseline for studying the charm hadronization in lead-lead collisions at LHC energies.

Halide perovskite has attracted intense research interest owing to its multifaceted and versatile applications in optoelectronics. This intrigue is further fueled by their propensity to undergo intricate structural modifications under extreme conditions, thereby instigating property changes. Within this context, our study delves deep into the intricate interplay of structural and vibrational attributes within the inorganic-metal halide perovskite-like CsCuCl3. Our approach employs Raman spectroscopy and Synchrotron Powder X-Ray Diffraction (SPXRD) techniques harnessed under the dual conditions of low temperatures and high pressures. We have observed a distinct spin-phonon coupling mechanism by employing Raman spectroscopy at low temperatures; this coupling has been manifested as a renormalization phonon phenomenon that occurs notably at T* = 15 K. The correlation between spin and phonon dynamics becomes pronounced through a notable hardening of phonon temperature dependence, a behavior intricately linked to the material antiferromagnetic transition at TN = 10.7 K. The SPXRD under high pressure showed a first-order structural phase transition (SPT) at the critical pressure Pc = 3.69 GPa, leading to the transformation from the hexagonal P6522 to a base-centered monoclinic cell. Notably, the coexistence of both phases is discernible within the pressure range from 2.79 to 3.57 GPa, indicating that the SPT involves the reorganization of the internal [Cu2Cl9]5- dimer unit, with the Cl-Cu-Cl bending contributing more than stretching modes. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the SPT is reversible, but residual strain pressure influences the modification of the critical pressure Pc value upon pressure decrease.

The first measurement of the $Z$ boson production cross-section at centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 5.02\,$TeV in the forward region is reported, using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment in year 2017, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $100 \pm 2\,\rm{pb^{-1}}$. The production cross-section is measured for final-state muons in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.5$ with transverse momentum $p_{\rm{T}}> 20\,\rm{GeV/}\it{c}$. The integrated cross-section is determined to be \[
σ_{Z \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}} = 39.6 \pm 0.7\,(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.6\,(\rm{syst}) \pm 0.8\,(\rm{lumi}) \ \rm{pb} \] for the di-muon invariant mass in the range $60<M_{μμ}<120\,\rm{GeV/}\it{c^{2}}$. This result and the differential cross-section results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling.
Based on a previous LHCb measurement of the $Z$ boson production cross-section in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, the nuclear modification factor $R_{p\rm{Pb}}$ is measured for the first time at this energy. The measured values are $1.2^{+0.5}_{-0.3}\,(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.1\,(\rm{syst})$ in the forward region ($1.53<y^*_μ<4.03$) and $3.6^{+1.6}_{-0.9}\,(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.2\,(\rm{syst})$ in the backward region ($-4.97<y^*_μ<-2.47$), where $y^*_μ$ represents the muon rapidity in the centre-of-mass frame.

The complex Helmholtz equation $(Δ+ k^2)u=f$ (where $k\in{\mathbb R},u(\cdot),f(\cdot)\in{\mathbb C}$) is a mainstay of computational wave simulation. Despite its apparent simplicity, efficient numerical methods are challenging to design and, in some applications, regarded as an open problem. Two sources of difficulty are the large number of degrees of freedom and the indefiniteness of the matrices arising after discretisation. Seeking to meet them within the novel framework of probabilistic domain decomposition, we set out to rewrite the Helmholtz equation into a form amenable to the Feynman-Kac formula for elliptic boundary value problems. We consider two typical scenarios, the scattering of a plane wave and the propagation inside a cavity, and recast them as a sequence of Poisson equations. By means of stochastic arguments, we find a sufficient and simulatable condition for the convergence of the iterations. Upon discretisation a necessary condition for convergence can be derived by adding up the iterates using the harmonic series for the matrix inverse -- we illustrate the procedure in the case of finite differences.
From a practical point of view, our results are ultimately of limited scope. Nonetheless, this unexpected -- even paradoxical -- new direction of attack on the Helmholtz equation proposed by this work offers a fresh perspective on this classical and difficult problem. Our results show that there indeed exists a predictable range $k<k_{max}$ in which this new ansatz works with $k_{max}$ being far below the challenging situation.

Privacy has rapidly become a major concern/design consideration. Homomorphic Encryption (HE) and Garbled Circuits (GC) are privacy-preserving techniques that support computations on encrypted data. HE and GC can complement each other, as HE is more efficient for linear operations, while GC is more effective for non-linear operations. Together, they enable complex computing tasks, such as machine learning, to be performed exactly on ciphertexts. However, HE and GC introduce two major bottlenecks: an elevated computational overhead and high data transfer costs. This paper presents PPIMCE, an in-memory computing (IMC) fabric designed to mitigate both computational overhead and data transfer issues. Through the use of multiple IMC cores for high parallelism, and by leveraging in-SRAM IMC for data management, PPIMCE offers a compact, energy-efficient solution for accelerating HE and GC. PPIMCE achieves a 107X speedup against a CPU implementation of GC. Additionally, PPIMCE achieves a 1,500X and 800X speedup compared to CPU and GPU implementations of CKKS-based HE multiplications. For privacy-preserving machine learning inference, PPIMCE attains a 1,000X speedup compared to CPU and a 12X speedup against CraterLake, the state-of-art privacy preserving computation accelerator.

Using a sample of approximately 349 000 $B^{0}_{s}$ signal decays with an invariant $K^{+}K^{-}$ mass in the vicinity of the $φ(1020)$ resonance, the $CP$-violating phase $φ_s$ is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the $B^0_s$-$\bar{B}^0_s$ system, $ΔΓ_s$, and the difference of the average $B^0_s$ and $B^0$ meson decay widths, $Γ_s-Γ_d$. The values obtained are $φ_s = \ -0.039 \pm 0.022 \pm 0.006$ rad, $ΔΓ_s = 0.0845 \pm 0.0044 \pm 0.0024 $ ps$^{-1}$ and $Γ_s-Γ_d = -0.0056 ^{+ 0.0013}_{-0.0015} \pm 0.0014$ ps$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with the previous LHCb analyses of this decay. These results are combined with previous independent LHCb measurements. The phase $φ_s$ is also measured independently for each polarization state of the $K^{+}K^{-}$ system and shows no evidence for polarization dependence.

This paper reports the observation of the decays $B_{(s)}^{0}\to D_{s1}(2536)^{\mp}K^{\pm}$ using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to the normalisation channel $B^{0}\to \overline{D}^{0}K^{+}K^{-}$. The $D_{s1}(2536)^{-}$ meson is reconstructed in the $\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}$ decay channel and the products of branching fractions are measured to be $$\mathcal{B}(B_{s}^{0}\to D_{s1}(2536)^{\mp}K^{\pm})\times\mathcal{B}(D_{s1}(2536)^{-}\to\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-})=(2.49\pm0.11\pm0.12\pm0.25\pm0.06)\times 10^{-5}, $$ $$\mathcal{B}(B^{0}\to D_{s1}(2536)^{\mp}K^{\pm})\times\mathcal{B}(D_{s1}(2536)^{-}\to\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}) = (0.510\pm0.021\pm0.036\pm0.050)\times 10^{-5}.$$ The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third arises from the uncertainty of the branching fraction of the $B^{0}\to \overline{D}^{0}K^{+}K^{-}$ normalisation channel. The last uncertainty in the $B_{s}^{0}$ result is due to the limited knowledge of the fragmentation fraction ratio, $f_{s}/f_{d}$. The significance for the $B_{s}^{0}$ and $B^{0}$ signals is larger than $10\,σ$. The ratio of the helicity amplitudes which governs the angular distribution of the $D_{s1}(2536)^{-}\to\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}$ decay is determined from the data. The ratio of the $S$- and $D$-wave amplitudes is found to be $1.11\pm0.15\pm 0.06$ and its phase $0.70\pm0.09\pm 0.04$ rad, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Quantifying electron-phonon interactions for the surface states of topological materials can provide key insights into surface-state transport, topological superconductivity, and potentially how to manipulate the surface state using a structural degree of freedom. We perform time-resolved x-ray diffraction (XRD) and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements on Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$, following the excitation of coherent A$_{1g}$ optical phonons. We extract and compare the deformation potentials coupling the surface electronic states to local A$_{1g}$-like displacements in these two materials using the experimentally determined atomic displacements from XRD and electron band shifts from ARPES.We find the coupling in Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ to be similar and in general in agreement with expectations from density functional theory. We establish a methodology that quantifies the mode-specific electron-phonon coupling experimentally, allowing detailed comparison to theory. Our results shed light on fundamental processes in topological insulators involving electron-phonon coupling.

The decay $Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-$ is observed using a proton-proton collision data sample collected at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb$^{-1}$. This process is mediated by the $s\to u\bar{u}d$ quark-level transition, where the $b$ quark in the $Ξ_b^-$ baryon is a spectator in the decay. Averaging the results obtained using the two $Λ_b^0$ decay modes, $Λ_b^0\toΛ_c^+π^-$ and $Λ_b^0\toΛ_c^+π^-π^+π^-$, the relative production ratio is measured to be $(f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)=(7.3\pm0.8\pm0.6)\times10^{-4}$. Here the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and $f_{Ξ_b^-}(f_{Λ_b^0})$ is the fragmentation fraction for a $b$ quark into a $Ξ_b^-$ ($Λ_b^0$) baryon. Using an independent measurement of $f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}$, the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)=(0.89\pm0.10\pm0.07\pm0.29)\%$ is obtained, where the last uncertainty is due to the assumed SU(3) flavor symmetry in the determination of $f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}$.

Two level credibility-limited revision is a non-prioritized revision operation. When revising by a two level credibility-limited revision, two levels of credibility and one level of incredibility are considered. When revising by a sentence at the highest level of credibility, the operator behaves as a standard revision, if the sentence is at the second level of credibility, then the outcome of the revision process coincides with a standard contraction by the negation of that sentence. If the sentence is not credible, then the original belief set remains unchanged. In this paper, we propose a construction for two level credibility-limited revision operators based on Grove's systems of spheres and present an axiomatic characterization for these operators.

Correlations of same-sign charged particles are analysed using proton-lead collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.06 nb-1. Bose-Einstein correlations are observed in the form of an enhancement of pair production for same-sign charged pions with a small four-momentum difference squared. The dependence of the correlation radius and the intercept parameter on the reconstructed charged-particle multiplicity is investigated. The measured correlation radii scale linearly with the cube root of the reconstructed charged-particle multiplicity, being compatible with predictions of hydrodynamic models on the collision system evolution.

Dark web marketplaces have been a significant outlet for illicit trade, serving millions of users worldwide for over a decade. However, not all users are the same. This paper aims to identify the key players in Bitcoin transaction networks linked to dark markets and assess their role by analysing a dataset of 40 million Bitcoin transactions involving 31 markets in the period 2011-2021. First, we propose an algorithm that categorizes users either as buyers or sellers and shows that a large fraction of the traded volume is concentrated in a small group of elite market participants. Then, we investigate both market star-graphs and user-to-user networks and highlight the importance of a new class of users, namely `multihomers' who operate on multiple marketplaces concurrently. Specifically, we show how the networks of multihomers and seller-to-seller interactions can shed light on the resilience of the dark market ecosystem against external shocks. Our findings suggest that understanding the behavior of key players in dark web marketplaces is critical to effectively disrupting illegal activities.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), the most abundant biogenic mineral on earth, plays a crucial role in various fields. Of the four polymorphs, calcite, aragonite, vaterite, and amorphous CaCO3, vaterite is the most enigmatic one due to an ongoing debate regarding its structure that has persisted for nearly a century. In this work, based on systematic transmission electron microscopy characterizations, elaborate crystallographic analysis and machine learning aided molecular dynamics simulations with ab initio accuracy, we reveal that vaterite can be regarded as a polytypic structure. The basic phase is a monoclinic lattice possessing pseudohexagonal symmetry. Direct imaging and atomic-scale simulations provide evidence that a single grain of vaterite can have three orientation variants. Additionally, we find that vaterite undergoes a second-order phase transition. These atomic scale insights provide a comprehensive understanding of the structure of vaterite and offer new perspectives on the biomineralization process of calcium carbonate.

The measurement is performed for $J/ψ$ ($\mathitΥ$) mesons with a transverse momentum $p_{\mathrm{T}}<10\,(30)\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ in the rapidity range $2.0<y<4.5$. In this kinematic range, the cross-section of the associated production of prompt $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ(1S)$ mesons is measured to be $133 \pm 22 \pm 7 \pm 3 \, \mathrm{pb}$, with a significance of $7.9\,σ$, and that of prompt $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ(2S)$ mesons to be $76\pm 21 \pm 4 \pm 7 \, \mathrm{pb}$, with a significance of $4.9\,σ$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to uncertainties on the used branching fractions. This is the first observation of the associated production of $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ(1S)$ in proton-proton collisions. Differential cross-sections are measured as functions of variables that are sensitive to kinematic correlations between the $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ(1S)$ mesons. The effective cross-sections of the associated production of prompt $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ$ mesons are obtained and found to be compatible with measurements using other particle productions.

The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all-software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all-software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. This scheme required a complete revision of the computing model and rewriting of the experiment's software.

This paper presents a generalized model for real-time detection of flying objects that can be used for transfer learning and further research, as well as a refined model that achieves state-of-the-art results for flying object detection. We achieve this by training our first (generalized) model on a data set containing 40 different classes of flying objects, forcing the model to extract abstract feature representations. We then perform transfer learning with these learned parameters on a data set more representative of real world environments (i.e. higher frequency of occlusion, very small spatial sizes, rotations, etc.) to generate our refined model. Object detection of flying objects remains challenging due to large variances of object spatial sizes/aspect ratios, rate of speed, occlusion, and clustered backgrounds. To address some of the presented challenges while simultaneously maximizing performance, we utilize the current state-of-the-art single-shot detector, YOLOv8, in an attempt to find the best trade-off between inference speed and mean average precision (mAP). While YOLOv8 is being regarded as the new state-of-the-art, an official paper has not been released as of yet. Thus, we provide an in-depth explanation of the new architecture and functionality that YOLOv8 has adapted. Our final generalized model achieves a mAP50 of 79.2%, mAP50-95 of 68.5%, and an average inference speed of 50 frames per second (fps) on 1080p videos. Our final refined model maintains this inference speed and achieves an improved mAP50 of 99.1% and mAP50-95 of 83.5%

The $Ξ_{c}^{+}$ production cross-section, as well as the $Ξ_{c}^{+}$ to $Λ_{c}^{+}$ production cross-section ratio, are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity and compared to latest theory predictions. The forward-backward asymmetry is also measured as a function of the $Ξ_{c}^{+}$ transverse momentum.

The measured ratio is $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-}τ^+ν_τ)/\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-}π^+π^-π^+) = 1.79 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.11$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is related to systematic effects. Using established branching fractions for the $B^0 \to D^{*-}π^+π^-π^+$ and $B^0 \to D^{*-}μ^+ν_μ$ modes, the lepton universality test, $\mathcal{R}(D^{*-}) \equiv \mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-}τ^+ν_τ)/\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-}μ^+ν_μ)$ is calculated, $$ \mathcal{R}(D^{*-}) = 0.260 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.016 \pm 0.012\, , $$ where the third uncertainty is due to the uncertainties on the external branching fractions. This result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction and with previous measurements.

The $K^0_SK π$ invariant mass spectra from both decay modes reveal a rich content of charmonium resonances. New precise measurements of the $η_c$ and $η_c(2S)$ resonance parameters are performed and branching fraction measurements are obtained for $B^+$ decays to $η_c$, $J/ψ$, $η_c(2S)$ and $χ_{c1}$ resonances. In particular, the first observation and branching fraction measurement of $B^+ \to χ_{c0} K^0 π^+$ is reported as well as first measurements of the $B^+\to K^0K^+K^-π^+$ and $B^+\to K^0K^+K^+π^-$ branching fractions. Dalitz plot analyses of $η_c \to K^0_SKπ$ and $η_c(2S) \to K^0_SKπ$ decays are performed. A new measurement of the amplitude and phase of the $K π$ $S$-wave as functions of the $K π$ mass is performed, together with measurements of the $K^*_0(1430)$, $K^*_0(1950)$ and $a_0(1700)$ parameters. Finally, the branching fractions of $χ_{c1}$ decays to $K^*$ resonances are also measured.

A flavor-tagged time-dependent angular analysis of the decay $B_s^{0}\rightarrowφφ$ is performed using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, the center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb^{-1}. The $\it{CP}$-violating phase and direct $\it{CP}$-violation parameter are measured to be $φ_{s\bar{s}s} = -0.042 \pm 0.075 \pm 0.009 $ rad and $|λ|=1.004\pm 0.030 \pm 0.009 $, respectively, assuming the same values for all polarization states of the $φφ$ system. In these results, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These parameters are also determined separately for each polarization state, showing no evidence for polarization dependence. The results are combined with previous LHCb measurements using $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding $φ_{s\bar{s}s} = -0.074 \pm 0.069 $ rad and $|λ|=1.009 \pm 0.030$. This is the most precise study of time-dependent $\it{CP} $ violation in a penguin-dominated $B$ meson decay. The results are consistent with $\it{CP} $ symmetry and with the Standard Model predictions.

Technology integration in educational settings has led to the development of novel sensor-based tools that enable students to measure and interact with their environment. Although reports from using such tools can be positive, evaluations are often conducted under controlled conditions and short timeframes. There is a need for longitudinal data collected in realistic classroom settings. However, sustained and authentic classroom use requires technology platforms to be seen by teachers as both easy to use and of value. We describe our development of a sensor-based platform to support science teaching that followed a 14-month user-centered design process. We share insights from this design and development approach, and report findings from a 6-month large-scale evaluation involving 35 schools and 1245 students. We share lessons learnt, including that technology integration is not an educational goal per se and that technology should be a transparent tool to enable students to achieve their learning goals.

The analysis uses a sample of beauty mesons produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. The signal signature corresponds to simultaneous peaks in the $μ^+μ^-$ and $π^-μ^+μ^-$ invariant masses. No evidence for an excess of events over background is observed and an upper limit is set on the branching fraction of the decay at ${\cal B}(D^{*}(2007)^0\toμ^+μ^-) < 2.6\times 10^{-8}$ at $90\%$ confidence level. This is the first limit on the branching fraction of $D^{*}(2007)^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decays and the most stringent limit on $D^{*}(2007)^0$ decays to leptonic final states. The analysis is the first search for a rare charm-meson decay exploiting production via beauty decays.

Nonequilibrium states of quantum materials can exhibit exotic properties and enable novel functionality and applications. These transient states are thought to be highly inhomogeneous, involving metastable, self-organized, topologically protected structures, which are inaccessible by most time-resolved measurements. Using ultrafast total x-ray scattering at a free electron laser and a sophisticated scaling analysis, we gain unique access to the dynamics on the relevant mesoscopic length scales. Our results show that ultrafast excitation of LaTe$_3$ leads to formation of vortex strings of the charge density wave, which exhibit anomalous, subdiffusive dynamics. These findings provide rare insight into the nonequilibrium mesoscopic response in a quantum material and establish a general framework to investigate properties of topological defects, which can arrest equilibration and enhance competing orders.

In a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), producing a high-resolution image generally requires an electron beam focused to the smallest point possible. However, the magnetic lenses used to focus the beam are unavoidably imperfect, introducing aberrations that limit resolution. Modern STEMs overcome this by using hardware aberration correctors comprised of many multipole lenses, but these devices are complex, expensive, and can be difficult to tune. We demonstrate a design for an electrostatic phase plate that can act as an aberration corrector. The corrector is comprised of annular segments, each of which is an independent two-terminal device that can apply a constant or ramped phase shift to a portion of the electron beam. We show the improvement in image resolution using an electrostatic corrector. Engineering criteria impose that much of the beam within the probe-forming aperture be blocked by support bars, leading to large probe tails for the corrected probe that sample the specimen beyond the central lobe. We also show how this device can be used to create other STEM beam profiles such as vortex beams and beams with a high degree of phase diversity, which improve information transfer in ptychographic reconstructions.
