Ultra peripheral heavy ion collisions and the energy dependence of the nuclear radius
Abstract: To estimate realistic cross sections in ultra peripheral heavy ion collisions we must remove effects of strong absorption. One method to eliminate these effects make use of a Glauber model calculation, where the nucleon-nucleon energy dependent cross sections at small impact parameter are suppressed. In another method we impose a geometrical cut on the minimal impact parameter of the nuclear col… ▽ More

Radion and Higgs Signals in Peripheral Heavy Ion Collisions at the LHC
Abstract: We investigate the sensitivity of the heavy ion mode of the LHC to Higgs boson and Radion production via photon-photon fusion through the analysis of the processes photon to photon photon, photon photon to b anti-b, and photon photon to g g in peripheral heavy ion collisions. We suggest cuts to improve the Higgs and Radion signal over standard model background ratio and determine the capability… ▽ More

Can we observe the $σ$ meson in peripheral heavy ion collisions?
Abstract: We discuss the possible production of the $σ$ meson and detection of its two photon decay mode in peripheral heavy ion collisions at RHIC. Assuming the mass and total decay width values reported recently by the E791 Collaboration, we verify that the $σ$ meson can be observed in the subprocess $γγ\to γγ$ if its partial decay width into photons is of the order of a few keV.

Hot Topics in Ultra-Peripheral Collisions
Abstract: Ultra-peripheral collisions of relativistic heavy ions involve long-ranged electromagnetic interactions at impact parameters too large for hadronic interactions to occur. The nuclear charges are large; with the coherent enhancement, the cross sections are also large. Many types of photonuclear and purely electromagnetic interactions are possible. We present here an introduction to ultra-peripher… ▽ More

Two-photon final states in peripheral heavy ion collisions
Abstract: We discuss processes leading to two photon final states in peripheral heavy ion collisions at RHIC. Due to the large photon luminosity we show that the continuum subprocess $γγ\to γγ$ can be observed with a large number of events. We study this reaction when it is intermediated by a resonance made of quarks or gluons and discuss its interplay with the continuum process, verifying that in several… ▽ More

Searching for Anomalous Higgs Couplings in Peripheral Heavy Ion Collisions at the LHC
Abstract: We investigate the sensitivity of the heavy ion mode of the LHC to anomalous Higgs boson couplings to photons, H-photon-photon, through the analysis of the processes photon photon to b anti-b and photon photon to photon photon in peripheral heavy ion collisions. We suggest cuts to improve the signal over background ratio and determine the capability of LHC to impose bounds on anomalous couplings… ▽ More

Photon-Photon and Pomeron-Pomeron Processes in Peripheral Heavy Ion Collisions
Abstract: We estimate the cross sections for the production of resonances, pion pairs and a central cluster of hadrons in peripheral heavy-ion collisions through two-photon and double-pomeron exchange, at energies that will be available at RHIC and LHC. The effect of the impact parameter in the diffractive reactions is introduced, and imposing the condition for realistic peripheral collisions we verify th… ▽ More

Testing the Resolving Power of 2-D K^+ K^+ Interferometry
Abstract: Adopting a procedure previously proposed to quantitatively study two-dimensional pion interferometry, an equivalent 2-D chi^2 analysis was performed to test the resolving power of that method when applied to less favorable conditions, i.e., if no significant contribution from long lived resonances is expected, as in kaon interferometry. For that purpose, use is made of the preliminary E859 K^+ K… ▽ More
