The Gamow-Teller strength distribution covering the entire $β$-decay window, up to 10.312(4) MeV, of $^{80g+m}$Ga was measured for the first time in photo-fission of UC$_x$ induced by 50 MeV electron beam. The new data show significant enhancement in the high-energy region with a jump-structure. Simultaneously, the $γ$ de-exciting behavior of $β$-populated states presents a competition between de-excitation to 2$_1^+$ [$β_2$ = 0.155(9)] and to 2$_2^+$ [$β_2$ = 0.053$_{0.009}^{0.008}$)] in $^{80}$Ge. Based on these facts and combined with a realistic shell model calculation and systematic analysis of logft ratio between precursor $β$-decay to 2$_2^+$ and to 2$_1^+$ of Ga isotopes, we conclude that these phenomena evidence simultaneous impacts of nuclear shell structure and collectivity on B(GT) and its distribution and, therefore, the half-life of the precursor. These data prove that the nucleus as a multi-nucleon correlated quantum system reacts as a whole when $β$-decay occurs in contrast to simple single-particle excitation. Additionally, the comparison with the theoretical results evidence how challenging is the description of the experimental data obtained, and render this experimental outcome a sound test for the theoretical models.

A R&D program is developed at the ALTO facility to provide new beams of exotic neutron-rich nuclei, as intense as possible. In the framework of European projects, it has been shown that the use of refractory targets with nanometric structure allows us to obtain beams of nuclei unreachable until now. The first parameter to be controlled in the processing to obtain targets with a homogeneous nanostructure is the grinding of uranium dioxide, down to 100 nm grain size. In this study, dry and wet grinding routes are studied and the powders are analyzed in terms of phase stabilization, specific surface area and grain morphology. It appears that the grinding, as well dry as wet, leads to the decrease of the particle size. The oxidation of UO2 is observed whatever the grinding. However, the dry grinding is the most efficient and leads to the oxidation of UO2 into U4O9 and U3O7 whose quantities increase with the grinding time while crystallite sizes decrease.

The optimization of the microstructure of the UCx target is a key point since many years in the field of ISOL method. The ultimate goal is to facilitate the release of the fission products, especially those with short half-lives. Fourteen UCx samples were synthetized from different uranium and carbon sources using three mixing protocols. All carburized samples were systematically characterized in terms of nature and proportion phases, grain and aggregate size, open and close porosity proportion and open pore size distribution. Our results were analysed using a multivariate statistical approach in order to remove any subjective bias. Strong correlations between the physicochemical characteristics of the samples as well as the impact of the synthesis process have been highlighted. In particular, using carbon nanotubes as carbon source combined with a new method of mixing is the key parameter to limit the sintering and to obtain samples with small grains and a high porosity well distributed over small pores. Moreover the microstructure obtained proved to be stable at high temperature.

New Target-Ion Source Systems combining a target and a catcher material are developed in the radioactive beam community, in particular at GANIL, in order to maximise the yield of very short lived atoms by minimizing the atom-to-ion transformation time. The aim of this study is to characterize the release properties of 81Rb collected on two graphite catchers and two carbon nanotube catchers. The release fractions were measured at various catcher-heating temperatures and then compared to the analytical expressions relevant to each catcher. This comparison led to the extraction of the pre-exponential factor (D0) and the activation energy (Eact) involved in the diffusion coefficient of Rb for three carbon microstructures. All these data allowed to define an ideal catcher which could be made of aligned carbon nanotubes of small diameter and oriented in order to collect all the 81Rb atoms produced by the target but also to release them efficiently.

To study the influence of the structural properties of UCx targets on their release properties, several types of targets using different precursors (carbon and uranium) were synthesized, characterized, irradiated and heated leading to the determination of the released fractions of eight elements. In this article, the production rates of these targets are estimated under the use conditions at ALTO, i.e. with targets bombarded by an electron beam (10 μA, 50 MeV). We have simulated the fission number produced using the FLUKA code. Then, we have determined the release efficiency as a function of the half-life of the isotopes using average diffusion coefficients deduced for the elements studied previously. Finally, we compare the production rates obtained from the various targets and conclude that the target must be adapted to the element studied. It is crucial to find in each case the best compromise between the target density and the release efficiency.

Producing intense radioactive beams, in particular those consisting of short-lived isotopes requires the control of the release efficiency. The released fractions of 11 elements were measured on 14 samples that were characterized by various physicochemical analyses in a correlated paper (Part 1). A multivariate statistical approach, using the principal component analysis, was performed to highlight the impact of the microstructure on the release properties. Samples that best release fission products consist of grains and aggregates with small size and display a high porosity distributed on small diameter pores. They were obtained applying a mixing of ground uranium dioxide and carbon nanotubes powders leading to homogeneous uranium carbide samples with a porous nanostructure. A modelling under on-line ALTO conditions was carried out using the FLUKA code to compare the yields released by an optimized and a conventional target.

Comparison with HFB+GCM calculations allows to establish the collective character of this nucleus indicating a substantial N=50 core polarization. The excitation energy of the 1/2+1 state in 83Ga known to carry a large part of the neutron 3s1/2 strength was measured at 247.8keV. Altogether these data allow to confirm the new single particle state ordering which appears immediately after the double Z=28 and N=50 shell closure and to designate 78Ni as a fragile and easily polarized doubly-magic core.
