We describe a general formalism based on the partial-wave decomposition to compute the iterative $s$-channel discontinuity of four-point amplitudes at any loop order. As an application, we focus on the low-energy expansions of type I and II superstring amplitudes. Besides providing new results for their leading and sub-leading logarithmic contributions beyond genus one, our approach elucidates the general structure of non-analytic threshold terms. In the case of open strings, the use of orthogonal colour projectors allows us to efficiently compute all contributions from different worldsheet topologies at a given loop order.

Correlators of a certain one-dimensional superconformal field theory dual to hypermultiplets in AdS$_2\times$S$^2$ exhibit a hidden four-dimensional conformal symmetry which allows one to repackage all tree-level 4-point correlators into a single four-dimensional object corresponding to a contact diagram arising from a massless $φ^4$ theory in AdS$_2\times$S$^2$. This theory serves as a toy model for IIB string theory in AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ and is interesting in its own right because AdS$_2\times$S$^2$ describes the near-horizon limit of extremal black holes in four dimensions. We argue that after acting with an $SU(1,1)\times SU(2)$ Casimir, all one-loop correlators can similarly be encoded by a four-dimensional function which arises from a one-loop scalar bubble diagram in AdS$_2\times$S$^2$, explaining how the hidden conformal symmetry extends beyond tree level. Finally, we conjecture a scalar effective field theory with a derivative interaction in AdS$_2\times$S$^2$ whose Witten diagrams should directly reproduce 4-point correlators to all loops without acting with Casimirs.

We bootstrap one-loop string corrections to the four-point function of half-BPS operators in a 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT with flavour group $SO(8)$, dual to gluon scattering at genus one on AdS$_5\times$S$^3$. We identify an 8-dimensional organising principle which governs the spectrum of double-trace anomalous dimensions, valid to all orders in the string length. This has precise implications for the structure of one-loop Mellin amplitudes, which we explicitly compute for the first three orders beyond the field-theory limit. We also consider the corresponding position space representation, which is entirely determined by the square of a certain differential operator acting on a simpler "pre-correlator". Finally, we show that the flat-space limit of the Mellin amplitudes exactly matches the logarithmic terms of the genus-one amplitude in 8-dimensional flat space, which we compute via a partial-wave analysis.

We adapt a procedure first proposed by Abl, Heslop and Lipstein in the context of AdS$_5 \times$S$^5$, and postulate the existence of an effective action in terms of an $8$-dimensional scalar field valued in the adjoint of the flavour group. The various Kaluza-Klein correlators can then be computed by uplifting the standard AdS/CFT prescription to the full product geometry with AdS bulk-to-boundary propagators and Witten diagrams replaced by suitable AdS$_5 \times$S$^3$ versions. After elucidating the main features of the procedure, valid at all orders in $α'$, we show explicit results up to order $α'^{5}$. The results provide further evidence of a novel relation between AdS$\times$S and flat amplitudes - which made its first appearance in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM - that is perhaps the most natural extension of the well known flat-space limit proposed by Penedones to cases where AdS and S have the same radius.

We study string corrections to one-loop amplitudes of single-particle operators ${\cal O}_p$ in $AdS_5 \times S^5$. The tree-level correlators in supergravity enjoy an accidental 10d conformal symmetry. Consequently, one observes a partial degeneracy in the spectrum of anomalous dimensions of double-trace operators and at the same time equality of many different correlators for different external charges $p_{i=1,2,3,4}$. The one-loop contribution is expected to lift such bonus properties, and its precise form can be predicted from tree-level data and consistency with the operator product expansion. Here we present a closed-form Mellin space formula for $\langle {\cal O}_{p_1}{\cal O}_{p_2}{\cal O}_{p_3} {\cal O}_{p_4}\rangle$ at order $(α')^3$, valid for arbitrary external charges $p_{i}$. Our formula makes explicit the lifting of the bonus degeneracy among different correlators through a feature we refer to as `sphere splitting'. While tree-level Mellin amplitudes come with a single crossing symmetric kernel, which defines the pole structure of the $AdS_5\times S^5$ amplitude, our one-loop amplitude naturally splits the $S^5$ part into two separate contributions. The amplitude also exhibits a remarkable consistency with the corresponding flat space IIB amplitude through the large $p$ limit.

In Mellin space, these are nicely determined by a single amplitude, which makes manifest the large $p$ limit, the connection with the flat space S-matrix, and the six dimensional conformal symmetry. We compute the $(1,1)\times \overline{(1,1)}$ superconformal blocks for the two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ conformal theory at the boundary, and then we obtain a formula for the anomalous dimensions of the operators exchanged in the symmetric and anti-symmetric flavor channels. These anomalous dimensions solve an unmixing problem which is analogous to the one in $AdS_5\times S^5$, with interesting modifications. Along the way we show how the $(1,1)\times \overline{(1,1)}$ superconformal blocks relate to those in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM in four dimensions, and we provide new intuition on the known data for $AdS_5\times S^5$.

Combining Mellin space techniques, the large $p$ limit, and data about the spectrum of two-particle operators at tree level in supergravity, we design a bootstrap algorithm which heavily constrains its $α'$ expansion. We use crossing symmetry, polynomiality in the Mellin variables and the large $p$ limit to stratify the Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude away from the ten-dimensional flat space limit. Then we analyse the spectrum of exchanged two-particle operators at fixed order in the $α'$ expansion. We impose that the ten-dimensional spin of the spectrum visible at that order is bounded above in the same way as in the flat space amplitude. This constraint determines the Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude in $AdS_5\times S^5$ up to a small number of ambiguities at each order and we compute it explicitly for $(α')^{5,6,7,8,9}$. As the order of $α'$ grows, the ten dimensional spin grows, and the set of visible two-particle operators opens up. Operators illuminated for the first time receive a string correction to their anomalous dimensions. This correction is uniquely determined and lifts the residual degeneracy of tree level supergravity due to ten-dimensional conformal symmetry. We encode the lifting of the residual degeneracy in a characteristic polynomial. This object carries information about all orders in $α'$.It is analytic in the quantum numbers, symmetric under an $AdS_5 \leftrightarrow S^5$ exchange, and it enjoys intriguing properties, which we explain and detail in various cases.

We consider a set of half-BPS operators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory which are appropriate for describing single-particle states of superstring theory on AdS${}_5 \times S^5$. These single-particle operators are defined to have vanishing two-point functions with all multi-trace operators and therefore correspond to admixtures of single- and multi-traces. We find explicit formulae for all single-particle operators and for their two-point function normalisation. We show that single-particle $U(N)$ operators belong to the $SU(N)$ subspace, thus for length greater than one they are simply the $SU(N)$ single-particle operators. Then, we point out that at large $N$, as the length of the operator increases, the single-particle operator naturally interpolates between the single-trace and the $S^3$ giant graviton. At finite $N$, the multi-particle basis, obtained by taking products of the single-particle operators, gives a new basis for all half-BPS states, and this new basis naturally cuts off when the length of any of the single-particle operators exceeds the number of colours. From the two-point function orthogonality we prove a multipoint orthogonality theorem which implies vanishing of all near-extremal correlators. We then compute all maximally and next-to-maximally extremal free correlators, and we discuss features of the correlators when the extremality is lowered. Finally, we describe a half-BPS projection of the operator product expansion on the multi-particle basis which provides an alternative construction of four- and higher-point functions in the free theory.

We deposited CO2 molecules in situ at 5K, which allowed us to unambiguously identify individual CO2 molecules and their adsorption sites. Based on a comparison of experimental and DFT-generated STM images, we find that the CO2 molecules sit in between the O atoms in the missing row reconstructed Cu(100)-O surface. The CO2 molecules are easily perturbed by the STM tip under typical imaging conditions, suggesting that the molecules are weakly bound to the surface. The calculated adsorption energy, vibrational modes, and diffusion barriers of the CO2 molecules also indicate weak adsorption, in qualitative agreement with the experiments. A comparison of tunneling spectroscopy and DFT-calculated density of states shows that the primary change near the Fermi level is associated with changes to the surface states with negligible contribution from the CO2 molecular states.

Repeated H$_2$ exposure and field emission yielded patches and then complete coverage of a crystalline $\sqrt{3}$ $\times$ $\sqrt{3}$ R30° phase, as well as less densely packed 3 $\times$ 3 and 4 $\times$ 4 structures. We characterize these defects through a survey of their apparent heights, atomic-resolution imaging, and detailed tunneling spectroscopy. Bright defects that occur only in graphene regions are identified as C site point defects in the graphene lattice and are most likely single C vacancies. Dark defect types are observed in both graphene and Cu regions, and are likely point defects in the Cu surface. We also present data showing the importance of bias and tip termination to the appearance of the defects in STM images and the ability to achieve atomic resolution. Finally, we present tunneling spectroscopy measurements probing the influence of point defects on the local electronic landscape of graphene islands.

We compare the physical and electronic structure of the sample surface with atomic spatial resolution on graphene islands versus regions of bare Cu(111) substrate. We find that the Rydberg-like series of image potential states is shifted toward lower energy over the graphene islands relative to Cu(111), indicating a decrease in the local work function, and the resonances have a much smaller linewidth, indicating reduced coupling to the bulk. In addition, we show the dispersion of the occupied Cu(111) Shockley surface state is influenced by the graphene layer, and both the band edge and effective mass are shifted relative to bare Cu(111).
