Lifted Kramers spin-degeneracy has been among the central topics of condensed-matter physics since the dawn of the band theory of solids. It underpins established practical applications as well as current frontier research, ranging from magnetic-memory technology to topological quantum matter. Traditionally, lifted Kramers spin-degeneracy has been considered to originate from two possible internal symmetry-breaking mechanisms. The first one refers to time-reversal symmetry breaking by magnetization of ferromagnets, and tends to be strong due to the non-relativistic exchange-coupling origin. The second mechanism applies to crystals with broken inversion symmetry, and tends to be comparatively weaker as it originates from the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. A recent theory work based on spin-symmetry classification has identified an unconventional magnetic phase, dubbed altermagnetic, that allows for lifting the Kramers spin degeneracy without net magnetization and inversion-symmetry breaking. Here we provide the confirmation using photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. We identify two distinct unconventional mechanisms of lifted Kramers spin degeneracy generated by the altermagnetic phase of centrosymmetric MnTe with vanishing net magnetization. Our observation of the altermagnetic lifting of the Kramers spin degeneracy can have broad consequences in magnetism. It motivates exploration and exploitation of the unconventional nature of this magnetic phase in an extended family of materials, ranging from insulators and semiconductors to metals and superconductors, that have been either identified recently or perceived for many decades as conventional antiferromagnets.

However, the reproducibility of manual stacking is far from perfect. Here, the alternated stacking of post-transition metal monochalcogenides and transition metal dichalcogenides in misfit layer compound crystals is used as a moiré generator. Using X-ray diffraction, the presence of twins with a well-defined small twist angle between them is shown. Due to the twist, the surface electrical potential from the induced ferroelectricity is observed using scanning probe microscopy and electron microscopy.

The electronic structure was studied using optical transmittance, x-ray and ultraviolet spectroscopy and by theoretical modeling using local density approximation (LDA) extended to LDA+U when Heisenberg model parameters were determined. Optical transmittance measurement have confirmed the theoretical predictions that NaMnAs is a semiconductor. Also the Néel temperature was closer determined for the first time from temperature dependence of magnetization, in agreement with our Monte Carlo simulations.

Despite belonging to a well-studied family of transition metal trihalides, VI_3 has received significant attention only recently. As a hard ferromagnetic van der Waals compound with a large coercivity, it attracted much attention because of its potential use in atomically thin spintronic and optoelectronic devices. However, practical exploration of VI_3 is challenging due to its instability under ambient conditions. Here, we present a comprehensive set of optical, x-ray diffraction, magnetization, and ellipsometric measurements of VI3 and demonstrate that, similarly to the related van der Waals ferromagnet CrI_3, the degradation process is accelerated by the presence of moisture. The VI_3 surface was covered by selected media commonly used in physical measurements to test its stability and lower the degradation rate three times or higher, providing practical information for experimentalists interested. The decomposition study at ambient conditions shows that the VI_3 single crystal can be used for most of the bulk, magnetization, and optical measurements without any noticeable change of physical properties, as the significant degradation appears first after ~ 2 hours of exposition as illustrated, e.g., by the evolution of the ferromagnetic T_1 and T_2 transitions. The ellipsometric measurement demonstrates that even the surface remains optically stable for at least 5 minutes.

We have examined a set of samples, all in the inverted regime of electronic bands, with the tin composition varying from $x=0.2$ to $0.33$. Our analysis shows that the observed response, composed of a series of interband inter-Landau level excitations, can be interpreted and modelled using the relativistic-like Hamiltonian for three-dimensional massive Dirac electrons, expanded to include diagonal quadratic terms that impose band inversion. In our data, we have not found any clear signature of massless electron states that are present on the surface of Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Se crystals in the inverted regime. Reasons for this unexpected result are discussed.

We present acoustic signatures of the electric quadrupolar degrees of freedom in the honeycomb-layer compound UNi$_4$B. The transverse ultrasonic mode $C_{66}$ shows softening below 30 K both in the paramagnetic phase and antiferromagnetic phases down to $\sim0.33$ K. Furthermore, we traced magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams up to 30 T and observed a highly anisotropic elastic response within the honeycomb layer. These observations strongly suggest that $Γ_6$(E$_{\rm 2g}$) electric quadrupolar degrees of freedom in localized $5f^2$ ($J = 4$) states are playing an important role in the magnetic toroidal dipole order and magnetic-field-induced phases of UNi$_4$B, and evidence some of the U ions remain in the paramagnetic state even if the system undergoes magnetic toroidal ordering.

Evolution of magnetism in single crystals of the van der Waals compound VI3 in external pressure up to 7.3 GPa studied by measuring magnetization and ac magnetic susceptibility is reported. Four magnetic phase transitions, at T1 = 54.5 K, T2 = 53 K, TC = 49.5 K, and TFM = 26 K, respectively have been observed at ambient pressure. The first two have been attributed to the onset of ferromagnetism in specific crystal-surface layers. The bulk ferromagnetism is characterized by the magnetic ordering transition at Curie temperature TC and the transition between two different ferromagnetic phases TFM, accompanied by a structure transition from monoclinic to triclinic symmetry upon cooling. The pressure effects on magnetic parameters were studied with three independent techniques. TC was found to be almost unaffected by pressures up to 0.6 GPa whereas TFM increases rapidly with increasing pressure and reaches TC at a triple point at ~ 0.85 GPa. At higher pressures, only one magnetic phase transition is observed moving to higher temperatures with increasing pressure to reach 99 K at 7.3 GPa. In contrast, the low-temperature bulk magnetization is dramatically reduced by applying pressure (by more than 50% at 2.5 GPa) suggesting a possible pressure-induced reduction of vanadium magnetic moment. We discussed these results in light of recent theoretical studies to analyze exchange interactions and provide how to increase the Curie temperature of VI3.

Surface magnetic domains of a UCoGa single crystal during magnetization/demagnetization processes in increasing/decreasing magnetic fields were investigated by means of magnetic-force-microscopy (MFM) images at low temperatures. The observed domain structure is typical for a ferromagnet with strong uniaxial anisotropy. The evolution of magnetic domains during cooling of the crystal below TC has also been manifested by MFM images. Analysis of the available data reveals that the high uniaxial magnetocrystalline energy in combination with the relatively small ferromagnetic exchange interaction in UCoGa gives rise to the formation of very narrow domain walls formed by the pairs of the nearest U neighbor ions with antiparallel magnetic moments within the basal plane. Since the very high anisotropy energy is a common feature of the majority of the uniaxial U ferromagnets, analogous domain-wall properties are expected for all these materials.

Temperature-dependent resistivity and magnetoresistance are measured in bulk tetragonal phase of antiferromagnetic CuMnAs and the latter is found to be anisotropic both due to structure and magnetic order. We compare these findings to model calculations with chemical disorder and finite-temperature phenomena included. The finite-temperature ab initio calculations are based on the alloy analogy model implemented within the coherent potential approximation and the results are in fair agreement with experimental data. Regarding the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) which reaches a modest magnitude of 0.12%, we phenomenologically employ the Stoner-Wohlfarth model to identify temperature-dependent magnetic anisotropy of our samples and conclude that the field-dependence of AMR is more similar to that of antiferromagnets than ferromagnets, suggesting that the origin of AMR is not related to isolated Mn magnetic moments.

Influence of substrate miscut on magnetization dynamics in SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) thin films was studied. Two films were grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates with high ($\sim1^{\circ}$) and low ($\sim0.1^{\circ}$) miscut angles, respectively. As expected, high miscut angle leads to suppression of multi-variant growth. By means of SQUID magnetometry, comparable relaxation effects were observed in both the multi-variant and the nearly single-variant sample. Differences in the magnetization reversal process were revealed by magnetic force microscopy. It showed that the multi-variant growth leads to higher density of defects acting as pinning or nucleation sites for magnetic domains, which consequently results in deterioration of magnetic properties. It was demonstrated that the use of high miscut substrate is important for fabrication of high quality SRO thin films with low density of crystallographic defects and excellent magnetic properties.

$\mathsf{Mn_{3}Sn}$ has recently attracted considerable attention as a magnetic Weyl semimetal exhibiting concomitant transport anomalies at room temperature. The topology of the electronic bands, their relation to the magnetic ground state and their nonzero Berry curvature lie at the heart of the problem. The examination of the full magnetic Hamiltonian reveals otherwise hidden aspects of these unusual physical properties. Here, we report the full spin wave spectra of $\mathsf{Mn_{3}Sn}$ measured over a wide momentum - energy range by the inelastic neutron scattering technique. Using a linear spin wave theory, we determine a suitable magnetic Hamiltonian which not only explains the experimental results but also stabilizes the low-temperature helical phase, consistent with our DFT calculations. The effect of this helical ordering on topological band structures is further examined using a tight-binding method, which confirms the elimination of Weyl points in the helical phase. Our work provides a rare example of the intimate coupling between the electronic and spin degrees of freedom for a magnetic Weyl semimetal system.

The effect of Cu substitution on the stability of the CuMnAs tetragonal phase was studied both experimentally and by ab initio calculations. Polycrystalline samples with various compositions Cu$_{1+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$As $(x = 0 - 0.5)$ were synthetized. The tetragonal phase of CuMnAs is found to be stabilized by substituting Mn by Cu in the amount of $x$ ~ 0.1 or higher. This observation is supported by ab initio calculations of the total energy of the tetragonal and orthorhombic phases; with increasing Cu content the tetragonal phase is favoured. Small variations of composition thus allow to grow selectively one of these two phases with distinct and unique features for antiferromagnetic spintronics.
Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and differential scanning calorimetry have shown that the tetragonal Cu$_{1+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$As has an antiferromagnetic behaviour with the maximum Néel temperature $T_N$ = 507 K for the highest Mn content samples, decreasing with the decreasing Mn content.

Thermal expansion, magnetostriction and magnetization measurements under magnetic field and hydrostatic pressure were performed on a $\mathrm{UAu_{2}Si_{2}}$ single crystal. They revealed a large anisotropy of magnetoelastic properties manifested by prominent length changes leading to a collapse of the unit-cell volume accompanied by breaking the fourfold symmetry (similar to that in $\mathrm{URu_{2}Si_{2}}$ in the hidden-order state) in the antiferromagnetic state as consequences of strong magnetoelastic coupling. The magnetostriction curves measured at higher temperatures confirm a bulk character of the 50 K weak ferromagnetic phase. The large positive pressure change of the ordering temperature predicted from Ehrenfest relation contradicts the more than an order of magnitude smaller pressure dependence observed by the magnetization and specific heat measured under hydrostatic pressure. A comprehensive magnetic phase diagram of $\mathrm{UAu_{2}Si_{2}}$ in magnetic field applied along the $c$ axis is presented. The ground-state antiferromagnetic phase is suppressed by a field-induced metamagnetic transition that changes its character from the second to the first order at the tricritical point.

Tetragonal phase of CuMnAs progressively appears as one of the key materials for antiferromagnetic spintronics due to efficient current-induced spin-orbit torques whose existence can be directly inferred from crystal symmetry. Theoretical understanding of spintronic phenomena in this material, however, relies on the detailed knowledge of electronic structure (band structure and corresponding wave functions) which has so far been tested only to a limited extent. We show that AC permittivity (obtained from ellipsometry) and UV photoelectron spectra agree with density functional calculations. Together with the x-ray diffraction and precession electron diffraction tomography, our analysis confirms recent theoretical claim [Phys.Rev.B 96, 094406 (2017)] that copper atoms occupy lattice positions in the basal plane of the tetragonal unit cell.

Single-crystalline UAu$_2$Si$_2$ has been grown by a floating-zone melting method, and its magnetic, thermal and transport properties have been investigated through measurements of magnetization, specific heat and electrical resistivity to reveal its peculiar magnetism. It is shown that UAu$_2$Si$_2$ undergoes a second-order phase transition at \tm = 19 K, which had been believed to be ferromagnetic ordering in the literature, from a paramagnetic phase to an uncompensated antiferromagnetic phase with spontaneous magnetization along the tetragonal $c$-axis (the easy magnetization direction). The magnetic entropy analysis points to the itinerant character of 5f electrons in the magnetic ordered state of UAu$_2$Si$_2$ with large enhancement of the electronic specific heat coefficient of $γ$ $\sim$ 150 mJ/K$^2$mol at 2 K. It also reveals the relatively isotropic crystalline electric field effect of this compound, with contrast to the other relative isostructural compounds. The observed magnetization curves strongly suggest that there is a parasitic ferromagnetic component developing below $\sim$ 50 K in high coercivity with the easy axis along the tetragonal $c$-axis. The results are discussed in the context of evolution of magnetism within the entire family of isostructural U$T_2$Si$_2$ compounds.

The effect of substituting Rh in CeRh1-xPdxIn5 with Pd up to x = 0.25 has been studied on single crystals. The crystals have been grown by means of the In self-flux method and characterized by x-ray diffraction and microprobe. The tetragonal HoCoGa5-type of structure and the c/a ratio of the parent compound remains intact by the Pd substitution; the unit cell volume increases by 0.6 % with x = 0.25 of Pd. The low-temperature behavior of resistivity was studied also under hydrostatic pressure up to 2.25 GPa. The Pd substitution for Rh affects the magnetic behavior and the maximum value of the superconducting transition temperature measured at pressures above 2 GPa only negligibly. On the other hand, the results provide evidence that superconductivity in CeRh0.75Pd0.25In5 is induced at significantly lower pressures, i.e. the Pd substitution for Rh shifts the CeRh1-xPdxIn5 system closer to coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity at ambient pressure.

We report on magnetization, specific heat and resistivity experiments on single crystals of the novel heavy Fermion compound Ce$_3$PdIn$_{11}$. At ambient pressure the compound exhibits two successive transitions at T$_{1}$ = 1.63 K and T$_{\mathrm {N}}$ = 1.49 K into incommensurate and commensurate local moment antiferromagnetic states, respectively, before becoming superconducting below T$_{\mathrm {c}}$ = 0.42 K. The large values of dB$_{\mathrm {c2}}$/dT and B$_{\mathrm {c2}}$ = 2.8 T imply that heavy quasiparticles form the Cooper pairs. Thus, Ce$_{3}$PdIn$_{11}$ is the first ambient pressure heavy Fermion superconductor where 4f electrons are simultaneously responsible for magnetic order and superconductivity.

The Pt-systems Ce$_2$PtIn$_8$ and Ce$_3$PtIn$_{11}$ are synthesized for the first time. All these compounds are member of the Ce$_n$T$_m$In$_{3n+2m}$ (n = 1, 2,..; m = 1, 2,.. and T = transition metal) to which the extensively studied heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ belongs. Single crystals have been grown by In self-flux method. Differential scanning calorimetry studies were used to derive optimal growth conditions. Evidently, the maximum growth conditions for these materials should not exceed 750 $^{\circ}$C. Single crystal x-ray data show that Ce$_2$TIn$_8$ compounds crystallize in the tetragonal Ho$_2$CoGa$_8$ phase (space group P4/mmm) with lattice parameters a =4.6898(3) $Å$ and c =12.1490(8) $Å$ for the Pt-based one (Pd: a = 4.6881(4) $Å$ and c = 12.2031(8) Å). The Ce$_3$TIn$_{11}$ compounds adopt the Ce$_3$PdIn$_{11}$ structure with a = 4.6874(4) $Å$ and c = 16.8422(12) $Å$ for the Pt-based one (Pd: a = 4.6896 $Å$ and c = 16.891 Å). Specific heat experiments on Ce$_3$PtIn$_{11}$ and Ce$_3$PdIn$_{11}$ have revealed that both compounds undergo two successive magnetic transitions at T$_1$ ~ 2.2 K followed by T$_N$ ~ 2.0 K and T$_1$ ~ 1.7 K and T$_N$ ~ 1.5 K, respectively. Additionally, both compounds exhibit enhanced Sommerfeld coefficients yielding γ$_{Pt}$ = 0.300 J/mol K$^2$ Ce (γ$_{Pd}$ = 0.290 J/mol K$^2$ Ce), hence qualifying them as heavy fermion materials.

Due to the predominantly surface character of graphene, it is highly suitable for functionalization with external atoms and/or molecules leading to a plethora of new and interesting phenomena. Here we show ferromagnetic properties of hydrogen-functionalized epitaxial graphene on SiC. Ferromagnetism in such a material is not directly evident as it is inherently composed of only non-magnetic constituents. Our results nevertheless show strong ferromagnetism, which cannot be explained by simple magnetic impurities. The ferromagnetism is unique to hydrogenated epitaxial graphene on SiC, where interactions with the interfacial buffer layer play a crucial role. We argue that the origin of the observed ferromagnetism is governed by electron correlation effects of the narrow Si-dangling-bond (Si-DB) states in the buffer layer exchange-coupled to localized states in the hydrogenated graphene layer. This forms a quasi-three-dimensional ferromagnet with a Curie temperature higher than 300 K.

We report on the discovery and investigation of a new 218 heavy fermion compound. Crystals have been synthesized from In-flux. Structurally, Ce2PtIn8 is located between the cubic CeIn3 and the more two-dimensional CeTIn5 (T = transition metal) type of compounds. The weak anisotropy of the paramagnetic susceptibility suggests rather 3D magnetic correlations. Specific heat, electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements revealed that Ce2PtIn8 orders antiferromagnetically below Tn = 2.1 K. An order-to-order transition is observed at Tm = 2 K. Similarities in the H - T phase diagram to other CenTmIn3n+2m (T = Rh, Pt) compounds point to a pressure-induced quantum phase transition (QPT) which, according to the tentative location of Ce2PtIn8 in the recent proposed global phase diagram for QPT, would be of spin density wave type.

We report on a theoretical and experimental study of CuMn-V antiferromagnets. Previous works showed low-temperature antiferomagnetism and semimetal electronic structure of the semi-Heusler CuMnSb. In this paper we present theoretical predictions of high-temperature antiferromagnetism in the stable orthorhombic phases of CuMnAs and CuMnP. The electronic structure of CuMnAs is at the transition from a semimetal to a semiconductor and we predict that CuMnP is a semiconductor. We show that the transition to a semiconductor-like band structure upon introducing the lighter group-V elements is present in both the metastable semi-Heusler and the stable orthorhombic crystal structures. On the other hand, the orthorhombic phase is crucial for the high Néel temperature. Results of X-ray diffraction, magnetization, transport, and neutron diffraction measurements we performed on chemically synthesized CuMnAs are consistent with the theory predictions.

Solution growth of single crystals of the recently reported new compound Ce2PdIn8 was investigated. When growing from a stoichiometry in a range 2:1:20 - 2:1:35, single crystals of CeIn3 covered by a thin (~50 um) single-crystalline layer of Ce2PdIn8 were mostly obtained. Using palladium richer compositions the thickness of the Ce2PdIn8 layers were increased, which allowed mechanical extraction of single-phase slabs of the desired compound suitable for a thorough study of magnetism and superconductivity. In some solution growth products also CePd3In6 (LaNi3In6 - type of structure) and traces of phases with the stoichiometry CePd2In7, Ce1.5Pd1.5In7 (determined only by EDX) have been identified. Magnetic measurements of the Ce2PdIn8 single crystals reveal paramagnetic behaviour of the Ce3+ ions with significant magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Above 70 K the magnetic susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law with considerably different values of the paramagnetic Curie temperature, for the magnetic field applied along the a- (-90 K) and c-(-50 K) axis. Below the reported critical temperature for superconductivity Tc (0.69 K) the electrical resistivity drops to zero. Comparative measurements of the electrical resistivity, heat capacity and AC susceptibility of several crystals reveal that the superconducting transition is strongly sample-dependent.
