Our JWST/NIRSpec observations have also revealed that very bright galaxy candidates at $z\sim10-13$ identified from ground-based telescope images before JWST are passive galaxies at $z\sim3-4$, emphasizing the necessity of strict screening and spectroscopy in the selection of the brightest galaxies at $z>10$. The UV luminosity functions derived from these spectroscopic results are consistent with a double power-law function, showing tensions with theoretical models at the bright end. To understand the origin of the overabundance of bright galaxies, we investigate their morphologies using JWST/NIRCam high-resolution images obtained in various surveys including PRIMER and COSMOS-Web. We find that $\sim70\%$ of the bright galaxies at $z\sim7$ exhibit clumpy morphologies with multiple sub-components, suggesting merger-induced starburst activity, which is consistent with SED fitting results showing bursty star formation histories. At $z\gtrsim10$, bright galaxies are classified into two types of galaxies; extended ones with weak high-ionization emission lines, and compact ones with strong high-ionization lines including NIV]$λ$1486, indicating that at least two different processes (e.g., merger-induced starburst and compact star formation/AGN) are shaping the physical properties of the brightest galaxies at $z\gtrsim10$ and are responsible for their overabundance.

It is generally hard to put robust constraints on progenitor masses of supernovae (SNe) and remnants (SNRs) observationally, while they offer tantalizing clues to understanding explosion mechanisms and mass distribution. Our recent study suggests that ``shell merger'', which is theoretically expected for stellar evolution, can appreciably affect final yields of inter-mediate mass elements (IMEs; such as Ne, Mg, and Si). In light of this, here we report results of X-ray spectral analysis of a Galactic SNR G359.0-0.9, whose abundance pattern may possibly be anomalous according to a previous study. Our spectroscopy using all the available data taken with XMM-Newton reveals that this remnant is classified as Mg-rich SNRs because of its high Mg-to-Ne ratio (Z_Mg/Z_Ne=1.90+0.27-0.19; mass ratio 0.66+0.09-0.07) and conclude that the result cannot be explained without the shell merger. By comparing the observation with theoretical calculations, we prefer the so-called Ne-burning shell intrusion and in this case the progenitor mass M_ZAMS is likely <15M_sun. We confirm the result also by our new molecular line observations with the NRO-45 m telescope: G359.0-0.9 is located in the Scutum-Centaurus arm (2.66--2.94 kpc) and in this case the resultant total ejecta mass ~6.8M_sun is indeed consistent with the above estimate. Our method using mass ratios of IMEs presented in this paper will become useful to distinguish the type of the shell merger, the Ne-burning shell intrusion and the O-burning shell merger, for future SNR studies.

We find that these high-$z$ galaxies present strong HeI emission with HeI/H$β$ flux ratios generally larger than those of local-dwarf galaxies. We derive He/H with all of the detected HeI, HeII, and $2-3$ hydrogen Balmer lines in the same manner as the local He/H determination conducted for cosmology studies. These high-$z$ galaxies show He overabundance He/H$\gtrsim 0.10$ or high electron density $n_\mathrm{e}\sim 10^{3-4}$ cm$^{-3}$ much larger than local values at low O/H, $12+\log \mathrm{(O/H)}=7-8$. In contrast, we obtain low He/H and $n_\mathrm{e}$ values for our local-dwarf galaxies by the same technique with the same helium and hydrogen lines, and confirm that the difference between the high-$z$ and local-dwarf galaxies are not mimicked by systematics. While two scenarios of 1) He overabundance and 2) high electron density are not clearly concluded, we find that there is a positive correlation on the He/H-N/O or $n_\mathrm{e}$-N/O plane by the comparison of the high-$z$ and local-dwarf galaxies. The scenario 1) suggests that the overabundant helium and nitrogen are not explained by the standard chemical enrichment of core-collapse supernovae, but the CNO-cycle products and equilibrium ratios, respectively. The scenario 2) indicates that the strong helium lines are originated from the central dense clouds of the high-$z$ galaxies by excessive collisional excitation.

We investigate the dynamics of GN-z11, a luminous galaxy at $z=10.60$, carefully analyzing the public deep integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data taken with JWST NIRSpec IFU. While the observations of the IFS data originally targeted a He II clump near GN-z11, we find that C III]$λ\lambda1907,1909$ emission from ionized gas at GN-z11 is bright and spatially extended significantly beyond the point-spread function (PSF) in contrast with the GN-z11's compact UV-continuum morphology. The spatially extended C III] emission of GN-z11 shows a velocity gradient, red- and blue-shifted components in the NE and SW directions, respectively, which cannot be explained by the variation of [C III]$λ$1907/C III]$λ$1909 line ratios. We perform forward modeling with GalPak$^\mathrm{3D}$, including the effects of PSF smearing and line blending, and find that the best-fit model is a nearly edge-on disk with a rotation velocity of $v_\mathrm{rot}$=$376_{-151}^{+110}$ km s$^{-1}$, a velocity dispersion of $σ_v=113_{-48}^{+24}$ km s$^{-1}$, and a ratio of $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_v=3.3_{-1.5}^{+1.7}$, indicative of a rotation-dominated disk at $z=10.6$. Interestingly, the disk rotation velocity is faster than the circular velocity at the virial radius, $v_\mathrm{c}(r_{200})=205_{-34}^{+28}$ km s$^{-1}$, estimated from the stellar mass, suggesting a compact disk produced under weak feedback such predicted in numerical simulations. In fact, the half-light radius of the C III] emitting gas disk is only $294\pm45$ pc, while the one of the stellar UV component is even smaller, $196\pm12$ pc. While higher S/N data are necessary for a conclusion, these observational results would suggest that GN-z11 has a fast-rotating gaseous disk whose center possesses luminous stellar components or AGN providing weak feedback.

SN2018ibb is a recently observed hydrogen poor super-luminous supernova which appears to be powered by the decay of $30\;\rm{M_\odot}$ of radioactive nickel. This supernova has been suggested to show hybrid signatures of a pair instability supernova and an interacting supernova. In a previous paper, we found that rotating, metal enriched pair instability supernova progenitors appeared to check both of these boxes. In this paper, we model the lightcurves of the pair instability supernovae using STELLA. We find that the STELLA models can explain the overall shape of the bolometric lightcurve of SN2018ibb, though not specific morphological features such as the luminosity peak or the bump at roughly three hundred days after the peak. We also estimate the contribution from interaction, and find that with relatively low wind velocities, the circum-stellar medium originating from the stellar winds is consistent with the evidence for interaction in the spectra. The observed values of the photosphere velocity in the hundred days after peak luminosity are similar to the STELLA models, but the deceleration is lower. This leads to the biggest inconsistency which is the black body temperature of SN2018ibb being much hotter than any of the STELLA models. We note that this high temperature (and the flat velocity) may be difficult to reconcile with the long rise time of SN2018ibb, but nevertheless conclude that if it is accurate, this discrepancy represents a challenge for SN2018ibb being a robust PISN candidate. This result is noteworthy given the lack of other scenarios for this supernova.

Because the anomalous Balmer decrements are not reproduced under the Case B recombination, we explore the nebulae with the optical depths smaller and larger than the Case B recombination by physical modeling. We find two cases quantitatively explaining the anomalies; 1) density-bounded nebulae that are opaque only up to around Ly$γ$-Ly8 transitions and 2) ionization-bounded nebulae partly/fully surrounded by optically-thick excited H{\sc i} clouds. The case of 1) produces more H$β$ photons via Ly$γ$ absorption in the nebulae, requiring fine tuning in optical depth values, while this case helps ionizing photon escape for cosmic reionization. The case of 2) needs the optically-thick excited H{\sc i} clouds with $N_2\simeq 10^{12}-10^{13}$ $\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$, where $N_2$ is the column density of the hydrogen atom with the principal quantum number of $n=2$. Interestingly, the high $N_2$ values qualitatively agree with the recent claims for GS-NDG-9422 with the strong nebular continuum requiring a number of $2s$-state electrons and for RXCJ2248-ID with the dense ionized regions likely coexisting with the optically-thick clouds. While the physical origin of the optically-thick excited H{\sc i} clouds is unclear, these results may suggest gas clouds with excessive collisional excitation caused by an amount of accretion and supernovae in the high-$z$ galaxies.

Simulations of pre-supernova evolution suggest that some intense shell burning can be so active that, in extreme cases, it can merge with the outer shell, changing the initial conditions for the supernova explosion. However, such violent activity in the interior of stars has been difficult to confirm from observations of stars. Here we propose that the elemental composition of O-rich ejecta in supernova remnants can be a tool to test for this kind of intense shell burning activity in the final stages of progenitor evolution. As an example, we discuss the origin of "Mg-rich" ejecta in the supernova remnant N49B. A high Mg/Ne mass ratio $\gtrsim 1$ suggests that the Ne- or O-burning shell has broken into or merged with the outer shell before the collapse. Such Mg-rich (or Ne-poor) ejecta has been identified in some other supernova remnants, supporting the idea that some destratification process, such as a shell merger, does indeed occur in the interiors of some massive stars, although they may not be the majority. Our results suggest that X-ray observations of O-rich ejecta in core-collapse supernova remnants will be a unique tool to probe the shell burning activity during the final stage of a massive star's interior.

These galaxies fall on the star-formation main sequence and are the typical star-forming galaxies with UV magnitudes of $-22.5\leq M_\mathrm{UV}\leq-17.0$. We find that 15 out of 53 galaxies show Ly$α$ emission at the $>3σ$ levels, and obtain Ly$α$ equivalent width (EW) measurements and stringent $3σ$ upper limits for the 15 and 38 galaxies, respectively. Confirming that Ly$α$ velocity offsets and line widths of our galaxies are comparable with those of low-redshift Ly$α$ emitters, we investigate the redshift evolution of the Ly$α$ EW. We find that Ly$α$ EWs statistically decrease towards high redshifts on the Ly$α$ EW vs. $M_{\rm UV}$ plane for various probability distributions of the uncertainties. We then evaluate neutral hydrogen fractions $x_{\rm HI}$ with the Ly$α$ EW redshift evolution and the cosmic reionization simulation results on the basis of a Bayesian inference framework, and obtain $x_{\rm HI}<0.79$, $=0.62^{+0.15}_{-0.36}$, and $0.93^{+0.04}_{-0.07}$ at $z\sim7$, $8$, and $9-13$, respectively. These moderately large $x_{\rm HI}$ values are consistent with the Planck CMB optical depth measurement and previous $x_{\rm HI}$ constraints from galaxy and QSO Ly$α$ damping wing absorptions, and strongly indicate a late reionization history. Such a late reionization history suggests that major sources of reionization would emerge late and be hosted by moderately massive halos in contrast with the widely-accepted picture of abundant low-mass objects for the sources of reionization.

Lyman-Werner (LW) radiation photodissociating molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) influences the thermal and dynamical evolution of the Population III (Pop III) star-forming gas cloud. The effect of powerful LW radiation has been well investigated in the context of supermassive black hole formation in the early universe. However, the average intensity in the early universe is several orders of magnitude lower. For a comprehensive study, we investigate the effects of LW radiation at $18$ different intensities, ranging from $J_{\rm LW}/J_{21}=0$ (no radiation) to $30$ (H-cooling cloud), on the primordial star-forming gas cloud obtained from a three-dimensional cosmological simulation. The overall trend with increasing radiation intensity is a gradual increase in the gas cloud temperature, consistent with previous works. Due to the HD-cooling, on the other hand, the dependence of gas cloud temperature on $J_{\rm LW}$ deviates from the aforementioned increasing trend for a specific range of intensities ($J_{\rm LW}/J_{21}=0.025-0.09$). In HD-cooling clouds, the temperature remained below $200$ K during $10^5$ yr after the first formation of the high-density region, maintaining a low accretion rate. Finally, the HD-cooling clouds have only a low-mass dense core (above $10^8\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$) with about $1-16\, M_{\odot}$, inside which a low-mass Pop III star with $\leq\!0.8\,M_{\odot}$ (so-called "surviving star") could form. The upper limit of star formation efficiency $M_{\rm core}/M_{\rm vir, gas}$ significantly decreases from $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-5}$ as HD-cooling becomes effective. This tendency indicates that, whereas the total gas mass in the host halo increases with the LW radiation intensity, the total Pop III stellar mass does not increase similarly.

We identify 30 out of the 130 galaxies with broad components of FWHM~200-700 km/s in the emission lines of H$α$ and [OIII] that trace ionized outflows, and find no excesses from the star-formation main sequence. Four out of the 30 outflowing galaxies are Type 1 AGN whose H$α$ emission lines include line profile components as broad as FWHM>1000 km/s. With the velocity shift and line widths of the outflow broad lines, we obtain ~80-500 km/s for the outflow velocities. We find that the outflow velocities as a function of star-formation rate are comparable to or higher than those of galaxies at z~1, accounting for the selection bias, while the outflow velocities of AGN are large but not significantly different from the others. Interestingly, these outflow velocities are typically not high enough to escape from the galactic potentials, suggestive of fountain-type outflows, which are concluded on the basis of thorough comparisons with recent JWST results. We estimate mass loading factors $η$ to be 0.1-1 that are not particularly large, but comparable with those of z~1 outflows. The large fraction of galaxies with outflows (30% with high resolution data) provides constraints on outflow parameters, suggesting a wide opening angle of >45 deg and a large duty-cycle of >30%, which gives a picture of more frequent and spherical outflows in high-z galaxies.

We derive morphologies of our high-$z$ galaxies, carefully evaluating the systematics of SB profile measurements with Monte Carlo simulations as well as the impacts of a) AGNs, b) multiple clumps including galaxy mergers, c) spatial resolution differences with previous HST studies, and d) strong emission lines, e.g., H$α$ and [OIII], on optical morphologies with medium-band F410M images. Conducting Sérsic profile fitting to our high-$z$ galaxy SBs with GALFIT, we obtain the effective radii of optical $r_{\rm e, opt}$ and UV $r_{\rm e, UV}$ wavelengths ranging $r_{\rm e, opt}=0.05$-$1.6$ kpc and $r_{\rm e, UV}=0.03$-$1.7$ kpc that are consistent with previous results within large scatters in the size luminosity relations. However, we find the effective radius ratio, $r_{\rm e, opt}/r_{\rm e, UV}$, is almost unity, $1.01^{+0.35}_{-0.22}$, over $z=4$-$10$ with no signatures of past inside-out star formation such found at $z\sim 0$-$2$. There are no spatial offsets exceeding $3σ$ between the optical and UV morphology centers in case of no mergers, indicative of major star-forming activity only found near a mass center of galaxies at $z\gtrsim 4$ probably experiencing the first phase of inside-out galaxy formation.

Neutrino interactions with stellar material are widely believed to be fundamental to the explosion of massive stars. However, this important process has remained difficult to confirm observationally. We propose a new method to verify it using X-ray observations of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. The elemental composition in its Fe-rich ejecta that could have been produced at the innermost region of the supernova, where neutrinos are expected to interact, allows us to examine the presence of neutrino interactions. Here we demonstrate that the amount of Mn produced without neutrino nucleosynthesis processes (i.e., the $ν$- and $ν$p-process) is too small to explain the Mn/Fe mass ratio we measure (0.14--0.67\%). This result supports the operation of significant neutrino interactions in the Cassiopeia A supernova. If the observed Mn/Fe mass ratio purely reflects the production at the innermost region of the supernova, this would be the first robust confirmation of neutrino-matter interactions in an individual supernova. We further show that the Mn/Fe mass ratio has the potential to constrain supernova neutrino parameters (i.e., total neutrino luminosity, neutrino temperature). Future spatially-resolved, high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy will allow us to investigate the details of neutrino-supernova astrophysics through its signatures in elemental composition not only in Cassiopeia A but also in other remnants.

In this paper we revisit metal-enriched rotating pair instability supernovae (PISNe) models for metallicities consistent with the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 0.1$Z_\odot$. By calculating multiple models, we intend to clarify mass ranges and the ejected $^{56}$Ni masses from the PISNe, and mass loss histories for progenitors. We find the choice of the Wolf-Rayet (WR) mass-loss rates are important and we adopt the recently proposed rate of Sander & Vink (2020), which covers the mass ranges for PISNe progenitors. We show that slow rotation lowers the PISN range due to the increase in core mass by rotational mixing. On the other hand, if we assume typical rotation speed for observed OB stars, the mass loss increase becomes more significant and the final stellar masses are smaller than non-rotating models. As a result, typical mass range for bright SNe, with $^{56}$Ni mass more than 10${ M}_\odot$ for such fast rotating models are more than 400, 350 ${ M}_\odot$, for LMC and 0.1$Z_\odot$ metallicities, respectively. It is interesting that, unlike previous works, we find Oxygen rich progenitors for most cases. This O-rich progenitor may be consistent with the recently identified PISN candidate SN2018ibb. He-rich progenitors are seen only for relatively dim and metal poor ($Z \lesssim 0.1 Z_\odot$) PISNe. We also discuss the black hole mass gap for metal-enriched PISNe, and show that the upperbound for the gap is lower than in the Pop III case.

We present chemical abundance ratios of 70 star-forming galaxies at $z\sim4$-10 observed by the JWST/NIRSpec ERO, GLASS, and CEERS programs. Such low C/N and high N/O ratios found in CEERS_01019 and GLASS_150008 (additionally identified in GN-z11) are largely biased towards the equilibrium of the CNO cycle, suggesting that these 3 galaxies are enriched by metals processed by the CNO cycle. On the C/N vs. O/H plane, these 3 galaxies do not coincide with Galactic HII regions, normal star-forming galaxies, and nitrogen-loud quasars with asymptotic giant branch stars, but globular-cluster (GC) stars, indicating a connection with GC formation. We compare C/O and N/O of these 3 galaxies with those of theoretical models, and find that these 3 galaxies are explained by scenarios with dominant CNO-cycle materials, i.e. Wolf-Rayet stars, supermassive ($10^{3}-10^{5}\ M_{\odot}$) stars, and tidal disruption events, interestingly with a requirement of frequent direct collapses. For all the 70 galaxies, we present measurements of Ne/O, S/O, and Ar/O, together with C/O and N/O. We identify 4 galaxies with very low Ne/O, $\log(\rm Ne/O)<-1.0$, indicating abundant massive ($\gtrsim30\ M_\odot$) stars.

We performed $42$ simulations of the first star formation with initial supersonic gas flows relative to the dark matter at the cosmic recombination era. Increasing the initial streaming velocities led to delayed halo formation and increased halo mass, enhancing the mass of the gravitationally shrinking gas cloud. For more massive gas clouds, the rate of temperature drop during contraction, in other words, the structure asymmetry, becomes more significant. When the maximum and minimum gas temperature ratios before and after contraction exceed about ten, the asymmetric structure of the gas cloud prevails, inducing fragmentation into multiple dense gas clouds. We continued our simulations until $10^5$ years after the first dense core formation to examine the final fate of the massive star-forming gas cloud. Among the $42$ models studied, we find the simultaneous formation of up to four dense gas clouds, with a total mass of about $2254\,M_\odot$. While the gas mass in the host halo increases with increasing the initial streaming velocity, the mass of the dense cores does not change significantly. The star formation efficiency decreases by more than one order of magnitude from $ε_{\rm III} \sim 10^{-2}$ to $10^{-4}$ when the initial streaming velocity, normalised by the root mean square value, increases from 0 to 3.

We present statistics of $z\sim 6-9$ galaxy outflows indicated by spatially-extended gas emission and broad lines. With a total of 61 spectroscopically confirmed galaxies at $z\sim 6-9$ in the JWST CEERS, GLASS, and ERO data, we find four galaxies with [O{\sc iii}]+H$β$ ionized gas emission significantly extended beyond the kpc-scale stellar components on the basis of the emission line images constructed by the subtraction of NIRCam broadband (line on/off-band) images. By comparison with low-$z$ galaxies, the fraction of galaxies with the spatially extended gas, 4/18, at $z\sim 6-9$ is an order of magnitude higher than those at $z\sim 0-1$, which can be explained by events triggered by frequent major mergers at high redshift. We also investigate medium- and high-resolution NIRSpec spectra of 30 galaxies at $z\sim 6-9$, and identify five galaxies with broad ($140-800$ km s$^{-1}$) lines in the [O{\sc iii}] forbidden line emission, suggestive of galaxy outflows. One galaxy at $z=6.38$ shows both the spatially-extended gas emission and the broad lines, while none of the galaxies with the spatially-extended gas emission or broad lines present a clear signature of AGN either in the line diagnostics or Type 1 AGN line broadening ($>1000$ km s$^{-1}$), which hint outflows mainly driven by stellar feedback. The existence of galaxies with/without spatially-extended gas emission or broad lines may be explained by different viewing angles towards outflows, or that these are galaxies in the early, late, post phases of galaxy outflows at high redshift, where the relatively large fractions of such galaxies indicate the longer-duration and/or more-frequent outflows at the early cosmic epoch.

We present volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fractions $x_{\rm \HI}$ and ionized bubble radii $R_{\rm b}$ measured with Ly$α$ damping wing absorption of galaxies at the epoch of reionization. We combine JWST/NIRSpec spectra taken by CEERS, GO-1433, DDT-2750, and JADES programs, and obtain a sample containing 27 bright UV-continuum ($M_{\rm UV}<-18.5~{\rm mag}$) galaxies at $7<z<12$. We construct 4 composite spectra binned by redshift, and find the clear evolution of softening break towards high redshift at the rest-frame $1216$ Å, suggesting the increase of Ly$α$ damping wing absorption. We estimate Ly$α$ damping wing absorption in the galaxy spectra with realistic templates including Ly$α$ emission and circum-galactic medium absorptions. Assuming the standard inside-out reionization picture having an ionized bubble with radius $R_b$ around a galaxy embedded in the intergalactic medium with $x_{\rm \HI}$, we obtain $x_{\rm \HI}$ ($R_{\rm b}$) values generally increasing (decreasing) from $x_{\rm \HI}={0.53}^{+0.18}_{-0.47}$ to ${0.92}^{+0.08}_{-0.10}$ ($\log R_{\rm b}={1.67}^{+0.14}_{-0.16}$ to ${-0.69}^{+0.89}_{-0.24}$ comoving Mpc) at redshift $7.12^{+0.06}_{-0.08}$ to $9.91^{+1.49}_{-1.15}$. The redshift evolution of $x_{\rm \HI}$ indicates a moderately late reionization history consistent with the one previously suggested from the electron scattering of cosmic microwave background and the evolution of UV luminosity function with an escape fraction $f_{\rm esc}\sim 0.2$. Our ${R_{\rm b}}$ measurements suggest that bubble sizes could be up to a few dex larger than the cosmic average values estimated by analytic calculations for a given $x_{\rm \HI}$, while our $R_{\rm b}$ measurements are roughly comparable with the values for merged ionized bubbles around bright galaxies predicted by recent numerical simulations.

We select secure $>5σ$ sources showing narrowband color excesses via Ly$α$ break screening, taking into account the spatial inhomogeneity of limiting magnitudes. After removing spurious sources by careful masking and visual inspection of coadded and multi-epoch images obtained over the 7 yr of the surveys, we construct LAE samples consisting of 6995, 4641, 726, 6124, 2058, 18, and 5 LAEs at $z=2.2$, 3.3, 4.9, 5.7, 6.6, 7.0, and 7.3, respectively, although the $z=7.3$ candidates are tentative. Our LAE catalogs contain 241 spectroscopically confirmed LAEs at the expected redshifts from previous work. We demonstrate that the number counts of our LAEs are consistent with previous studies with similar LAE selection criteria. The LAE catalogs will be made public on our project webpage with detailed descriptions of the content and ancillary information about the masks and limiting magnitudes.

We present ionizing spectra estimated at 13.6--100 eV for ten dwarf galaxies with strong high ionization lines of He {\sc {ii}}$λ$4686 and [Ne {\sc{v}}]$λ$3426 ([Ne {\sc{iv}}]$λ$2424) at $z=0$ ($z=8$) that are identified in our Keck/LRIS spectroscopy and the literature (the JWST ERO program). With the flux ratios of these high ionization lines and $>10$ low-ionization lines of hydrogen, helium, oxygen, neon, and sulfur, we determine ionizing spectra consisting of stellar and non-thermal power-law radiation by photoionization modeling with free parameters of nebular properties including metallicity and ionization parameter, cancelling out abundance ratio differences. We find that all of the observed flux ratios are well reproduced by the photoinization models with the power law index $α_{\rm EUV}$ of $α_{\rm EUV}\sim (-1)-0$ and the luminosity $L_{\rm EUV}$ of $L_{\rm EUV}\sim 10^{40}-10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at $\sim 55-100$ eV for six galaxies, while four galaxies include large systematics in $α_{\rm EUV}$ caused by stellar radiation contamination. We then compare $α_{\rm EUV}$ and $L_{\rm EUV}$ of these six galaxies with those predicted by the black hole (BH) accretion disk models, and find that $α_{\rm EUV}$ and $L_{\rm EUV}$ are similar to those of the intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) in BH accretion disk models {albeit with possibilities of the other scenarios.} Confirming these results with a known IMBH having a mass $M_{\rm BH}$ of $M_{\rm BH}=10^{5.75} \ M_\odot$, we find that four local galaxies and one $z=7.665$ galaxy have ionizing spectra consistent with those of IMBHs with $M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^3-10^5 \ M_\odot$.

We present pure spectroscopic constraints on the UV luminosity functions and cosmic star formation rate (SFR) densities from 25 galaxies at $z_\mathrm{spec}=8.61-13.20$. By reducing the JWST/NIRSpec spectra taken in multiple programs of ERO, ERS, GO, and DDT with our analysis technique, we independently confirm 16 galaxies at $z_\mathrm{spec}=8.61-11.40$ including new redshift determinations, and a bright interloper at $z_\mathrm{spec}=4.91$ that was claimed as a photometric candidate at z~16. In conjunction with nine galaxies at redshifts up to $z_\mathrm{spec}=13.20$ in the literature, we make a sample of 25 spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies in total and carefully derive the best estimates and lower limits of the UV luminosity functions. These UV luminosity function constraints are consistent with the previous photometric estimates within the uncertainties and indicate mild redshift evolution towards z~12 showing tensions with some theoretical models of rapid evolution. With these spectroscopic constraints, we obtain firm lower limits of the cosmic SFR densities and spectroscopically confirm a high SFR density at z~12 beyond the constant star-formation efficiency models, which supports earlier claims from the photometric studies. While there are no spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies with very large stellar masses violating the $Λ$CDM model due to the removal of the bright interloper, we confirm star-forming galaxies at $z_\mathrm{spec}=11-13$ with stellar masses much higher than model predictions. Our results indicate possibilities of high star-formation efficiency (>5%), hidden AGN, top-heavy initial mass function (possibly with Pop-III), and large scatter/variance. Having these successful and unsuccessful spectroscopy results, we suggest observational strategies for efficiently removing low redshift interlopers for future JWST programs.

GN-z11 is an unusually luminous high redshift galaxy which was recently observed to have strong nitrogen lines while at the same time lacking traditional signatures of AGN activity. These observations have been interpreted as a super-solar nitrogen abundance which is challenging to explain with standard stellar evolution and supernovae enrichment. We present simulations of four models of metal enriched supermassive stars after the zero age main sequence which produce super-solar nitrogen consistent with the observations of GN-z11. We then show that the most massive model ends its life in a violent explosion which results in even greater nitrogen pollution.

Such a population of galaxies, represented by SBS 0335-052E, is intensively studied as a laboratory of galaxy formation, and interpreted as galaxies with hard emission and energetic outflows driven by massive stars\cite{1990Natur.343..238I, 2004ApJ...606..213T, 2009AA...503...61I}. Here we report the temporal flux variability of SBS 0335-052E in $3-4 \ μ$m bands on timescale of months to years with dimming and brightening up to 50\% over 12 years. This is a clear signature of dust torus emission of an active massive black hole in SBS 0335-052E. The deep optical spectrum reveals a very broad component with $1.24\ (\pm 0.01) \times 10^{4}$ km s$^{-1}$ in H$α$ emission, suggesting emission originated from broad line regions around the massive black hole. The black hole mass is estimated to be $\sim 100$ thousand solar masses from the spectral energy distribution. This is the first example of the massive black hole existence in a long-considered young star-forming dwarf galaxy.

Exploiting the resolution high enough for the low-mass galaxies, we derive gas dynamics with the H$α$ lines by the fitting of 3-dimensional disk models. We obtain an average maximum rotation velocity ($v_\mathrm{rot}$) of $15\pm3~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ and an average intrinsic velocity dispersion ($σ_0$) of $27\pm10~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ for 15 spatially resolved EMPGs out of the 33 EMPGs, and find that all of the 15 EMPGs have $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_0<1$ suggesting dispersion dominated systems. There is a clear decreasing trend of $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_0$ with the decreasing stellar mass and metallicity. We derive the gas mass fraction ($f_\mathrm{gas}$) for all of the 33 EMPGs, and find no clear dependence on stellar mass and metallicity. These $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_0$ and $f_\mathrm{gas}$ trends should be compared with young high-$z$ galaxies observed by the forthcoming JWST IFS programs to understand the physical origins of the EMPGs in the local universe.

Among the 185 galaxies at $z_\mathrm{spec}=3.8-8.9$ confirmed with NIRSpec, our systematic search for broad-line emission reveals 10 type-1 AGNs at $z=4.015-6.936$ whose broad component is only seen in the permitted H$α$ line and not in the forbidden [OIII]$λ$5007 line that is detected with greater significance than H$α$. The broad H$α$ line widths of $\mathrm{FWHM}\simeq1000-6000\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$ suggest that the AGNs have low-mass black holes with $M_\mathrm{BH}\sim10^6-10^8\ M_\odot$, remarkably lower than those of low-luminosity quasars previously identified at $z>4$ with ground-based telescopes. JWST and HST high-resolution images reveal that the majority of them show extended morphologies indicating significant contribution to the total lights from their host galaxies, except for three compact objects two of which show red SEDs, probably in a transition phase from faint AGNs to low luminosity quasars. Careful AGN-host decomposition analyses show that their host's stellar masses are systematically lower than the local relation between the black hole mass and the stellar mass, implying a fast black hole growth consistent with predictions from theoretical simulations. A high fraction of the broad-line AGNs ($\sim5\%$), higher than $z\sim0$, indicates that a number density of such faint AGNs is higher than an extrapolation of the quasar luminosity function, implying a large population of AGNs including type 1 and type 2 in the early universe. Such faint AGNs contribute to cosmic reionization, while the total contribution is not large, up to $\sim50\%$ at $z\sim6$, because of their faint nature.

We present the evolution of the mass-metallicity (MZ) relations at z=4-10 derived with 135 galaxies identified in the JWST/NIRSpec data taken from the three major public spectroscopy programs of ERO, GLASS, and CEERS. Because there are many discrepancies between flux measurements reported by early ERO studies, we first establish our NIRSpec data reduction procedure for reliable emission-line flux measurements and errors successfully explaining Balmer decrements with no statistical tensions via thorough comparisons of the early ERO studies. Applying the reduction procedure to the 135 galaxies, we obtain emission-line fluxes for physical property measurements. We confirm that 10 out of the 135 galaxies with [OIII]4363-lines have electron temperatures of (1.1-2.3)*10^4K, similar to lower-z star-forming galaxies, that can be explained by heating of young massive stars. We derive metallicities of the 10 galaxies by the direct method and the rest of the galaxies with strong lines by the metallicity calibrations of Nakajima et al. (2022) applicable for these low-mass metal-poor galaxies, anchoring the metallicities with the direct-method measurements. We thus obtain MZ relations and star-formation rate (SFR)-MZ relations over z=4-10. We find that there is a small evolution of the MZ relation from z~2-3 to z=4-10, while interestingly that the SFR-MZ relation shows no evolution up to z~8 but a significant decrease at z>8 beyond the error. This SFR-MZ relation decrease at z>8 may suggest a break of the metallicity equilibrium state via star-formation, inflow, and outflow, while further statistical and local-baseline studies are needed for a conclusion.

We present electron densities $n_{\rm e}$ in the inter-stellar medium (ISM) of star-forming galaxies at $z=4-9$ observed by the JWST/NIRSpec GLASS, ERO, and CEERS programs. We carefully evaluate line-spread functions of the NIRSpec instrument as a function of wavelength with the calibration data of a planetary nebula taken onboard, and obtain secure [OII]$λλ$3726,3729 doublet fluxes for 14 galaxies at $z=4.02-8.68$ falling on the star-formation main sequence with the NIRSpec high and medium resolution spectra. We thus derive the electron densities of singly-ionized oxygen nebulae with the standard $n_{\rm e}$ indicator of [OII] doublet, and find that the electron densities of the $z=4-9$ galaxies are $n_{\rm e}\gtrsim 300$ cm$^{-3}$ significantly higher than those of low-$z$ galaxies at a given stellar mass, star-formation rate (SFR), and specific SFR. Interestingly, typical electron densities of singly ionized nebulae increase from $z=0$ to $z=1-3$ and $z=4-9$, which is approximated by the evolutionary relation of $n_{\rm e}\propto(1+z)^{p}$ with $p\sim 1-2$. Although it is not obvious that the ISM property of $n_{\rm e}$ is influenced by global galaxy properties, these results may suggest that nebula densities of high-$z$ galaxies are generally high due to the compact morphologies of high-$z$ galaxies evolving by $r_{\rm e}$ approximately proportional to $(1+z)^{-1}$ ($r_{\rm vir} \propto (1+z)^{-1}$) for a given stellar (halo) mass whose inverse square corresponds to the $p\sim 2$ evolutionary relation. The $p\sim 1-2$ evolutionary relation can be explained by a combination of the compact morphology and the reduction of $n_{\rm e}$ due to the high electron temperature of the high-$z$ metal poor nebulae.

The assembly of supermassive black holes poses a challenge primarily because of observed quasars at high redshift, but additionally because of the current lack of observations of intermediate mass black holes. One plausible scenario for creating supermassive black holes is direct collapse triggered by the merger of two gas rich galaxies. This scenario allows the creation of supermassive stars with solar metallicity, where the enhanced metallicity is enabled by extremely rapid accretion. We investigate the behavior of metal enriched supermassive stars which collapse due to the general relativistic radial instability during hydrogen burning. These stars contain both hydrogen and metals and thus may explode due to the CNO cycle (carbon-nitrogen-oxygen) and the rp process (rapid proton capture). We perform a suite of stellar evolution simulations for a range of masses and metallicities, both including and neglecting mass loss. We evaluate the stability of these supermassive stars by solving the pulsation equation in general relativity. When the stars becomes unstable, we perform 1D general relativistic hydrodynamical simulations coupled to a 153 isotope nuclear network with cooling from neutrino reactions, in order to determine if the stars explode. If the stars do explode, we post process the nucleosynthesis using a 514 isotope network which includes additional proton rich isotopes. These explosions are characterized by enhanced nitrogen and intermediate mass elements ($16\geq\rm{A}\geq25$), and suppressed light elements ($8\geq\rm{A}\geq14$), and we comment on recent observations of super-solar nitrogen in GN-z11.

The current gravitational wave (GW) detectors have successfully observed many binary compact objects, and the third generation ground-based GW detectors such as Einstein telescope and space-borne detectors such as LISA will start their GW observation in a decade. Ahead of the arrival of this new era, we perform a binary population synthesis calculation for very massive ($\sim$ 100--1000 $M_\odot$) population (Pop.) III stars, derive the various property of binary black hole (BBH) mergers with intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) and investigate the dependence on common envelope parameter $αλ$ which is still not a well understood parameter. We find that the maximum mass of primary BH mass is larger for smaller value of common envelope parameter. In this study, we adopt double power law initial mass function (IMF) for Pop. III stars, and put some constraints on Pop. III IMF by comparing our obtained merger rate density at the local Universe with that derived from gravitational wave (GW) observation. We compute the detection rate and show that the third generation ground-based GW detector, Einstein telescope, have a potential to detect $\sim$ 10--1000 BBHs with IMBHs per year. We also find that we may be able to obtain the insight into $αλ$ if a BBH with total mass $\gtrsim500M_\odot$ are detected by advanced LIGO (O4) or LISA.

The origin of high-redshift quasars and their supermassive black hole engines is unclear. One promising solution is the collapse of a primordial supermassive star. Observational confirmation of this scenario may be challenging, but a general relativistic instability supernova provides one avenue for such. Previous studies have found that a general relativistic instability supernova has a potentially decades-long plateau phase visible to JWST at high redshift. In this work, we examine stars with mass just below the general relativistic instability supernova mass range. These stars pulsate, ejecting a portion of their envelopes. They then contract quasi-statically back to an equilibrium temperature, at which point they again become unstable and pulsate once more. Because each pulse consumes a small amount of the available nuclear fuel, there exists the possibility of multiple pulsations. We present simulations of the contracting phase, the pulsation, and the light-curve phase. We find that the lower mass pulsating models are even brighter than the higher mass supernovae because the pulsations occur in the late helium burning phase when the stars have extremely large radii. The fact that the pulsations are more luminous and occur in a wider mass range than the supernovae bodes well for observation.

Our sample consists of $22$ galaxy candidates identified by stringent dropout and photo-$z$ criteria in GLASS, CEERS, SMACS J0723, and Stephan's Quintet flanking fields, one of which has been spectroscopically identified at $z=11.44$. We perform surface brightness (SB) profile fitting with GALFIT for $6$ bright galaxies with S/N $=10$-$40$ on an individual basis and for stacked faint galaxies with secure point-spread functions (PSFs) of the NIRCam real data, carefully evaluating systematics by Monte-Carlo simulations. We compare our results with those of previous JWST studies, and confirm that effective radii $r_{\rm e}$ of our measurements are consistent with those of previous measurements at $z\sim 9$. We obtain $r_{\rm e}\simeq 200$-$300$ pc with the exponential-like profiles, Sérsic indexes of $n\simeq 1$-$1.5$, for galaxies at $z\sim 12$-$16$, indicating that the relation of $r_{\rm e}\propto (1+z)^s$ for $s=-1.22^{+0.17}_{-0.16}$ explains cosmic evolution over $z\sim 0$-$16$ for $\sim L^*_{z=3}$ galaxies. One bright ($M_{\rm UV}=-21$ mag) galaxy at $z\sim 12$, GL-z12-1, has an extremely compact profile with $r_{\rm e}=39 \pm 11$ pc that is surely extended over the PSF. Even in the case that the GL-z12-1 SB is fit by AGN$+$galaxy composite profiles, the best-fit galaxy component is again compact, $r_{\rm e}=48^{+38}_{-15}$ pc that is significantly ($>5σ$) smaller than the typical $r_{\rm e}$ value at $z\sim 12$. Comparing with numerical simulations, we find that such a compact galaxy naturally forms at $z\gtrsim 10$, and that frequent mergers at the early epoch produce more extended galaxies following the $r_{\rm e}\propto (1+z)^s$ relation.

We conduct a comprehensive study on dropout galaxy candidates at $z\sim9-16$ using the first 90 arcmin$^2$ JWST/NIRCam images taken by the early release observations (ERO) and early release science (ERS) programs. With the JWST simulation images, we find that a number of foreground interlopers are selected with a weak photo-$z$ determination ($Δχ^2>4$). We thus carefully apply a secure photo-$z$ selection criterion ($Δχ^2>9$) and conventional color criteria with confirmations of the ERO NIRSpec spectroscopic redshifts, and obtain a total of 23 dropout galaxies at $z\sim9-16$, including two candidates at $z_\mathrm{phot}=16.25_{-0.46}^{+0.24}$ and $16.41_{-0.55}^{+0.66}$. We perform thorough comparisons of dropout galaxies found in our work with recent JWST studies, and conclude that our galaxy sample is reliable enough for statistical analyses. We derive the UV luminosity functions at $z\sim9-16$, and confirm that our UV luminosity functions at $z\sim 9$ and $12$ agree with those determined by other HST and JWST studies. The cosmic star-formation rate density decreases from $z\sim9$ to $12$, and perhaps to $16$, but the densities at $z\sim12-16$ are higher than the constant star formation efficiency model. Interestingly, there are six bright galaxy candidates at $z\sim10-16$ with $M_\mathrm{UV}<-19.5$ mag and $M_*\sim10^{8-9} M_\odot$. Because a majority ($\sim80$\%) of these galaxies show no signatures of AGNs in their morphologies, the high cosmic star-formation rate densities and the existence of these UV-luminous galaxies are explained by no suppression of star-formation by the UV background radiation at the pre-reionization epoch and/or an efficient UV radiation production by a top-heavy IMF with Population III-like star formation.

We present kinematics of 6 local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with low metallicities ($0.016-0.098\ Z_{\odot}$) and low stellar masses ($10^{4.7}-10^{7.6} M_{\odot}$). Taking deep medium-high resolution ($R\sim7500$) integral-field spectra with 8.2-m Subaru, we resolve the small inner velocity gradients and dispersions of the EMPGs with H$α$ emission. Carefully masking out sub-structures originated by inflow and/or outflow, we fit 3-dimensional disk models to the observed H$α$ flux, velocity, and velocity-dispersion maps. All the EMPGs show rotational velocities ($v_{\rm rot}$) of 5--23 km s$^{-1}$ smaller than the velocity dispersions ($σ_{0}$) of 17--31 km s$^{-1}$, indicating dispersion-dominated ($v_{\rm rot}/σ_{0}=0.29-0.80<1$) systems affected by inflow and/or outflow. Except for two EMPGs with large uncertainties, we find that the EMPGs have very large gas-mass fractions of $f_{\rm gas}\simeq 0.9-1.0$. Comparing our results with other H$α$ kinematics studies, we find that $v_{\rm rot}/σ_{0}$ decreases and $f_{\rm gas}$ increases with decreasing metallicity, decreasing stellar mass, and increasing specific star-formation rate. We also find that simulated high-$z$ ($z\sim 7$) forming galaxies have gas fractions and dynamics similar to the observed EMPGs. Our EMPG observations and the simulations suggest that primordial galaxies are gas-rich dispersion-dominated systems, which would be identified by the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations at $z\sim 7$.

Observed supermassive black holes in the early universe have several proposed formation channels, in part because most of these channels are difficult to probe. One of the more promising channels, the direct collapse of a supermassive star, has several possible probes including the explosion of a helium-core supermassive star triggered by a general relativistic instability. We develop a straightforward method for evaluating the general relativistic radial instability without simplifying assumptions and apply it to population III supermassive stars taken from a post Newtonian stellar evolution code. This method is more accurate than previous determinations and it finds that the instability occurs earlier in the evolutionary life of the star. Using the results of the stability analysis, we perform 1D general relativistic hydrodynamical simulations and we find two general relativistic instability supernovae fueled by alpha capture reactions as well as several lower mass pulsations, analogous to the puslational pair instability process. The mass range for the events (2.6-3.0 $\times 10^4$ ${\rm M}_\odot$) is lower than had been suggested by previous works (5.5 $\times 10^4$ ${\rm M}_\odot$) because the instability occurs earlier in the star's evolution. The explosion may be visible to, among others, JWST, while the discovery of the pulsations opens up additional possibilities for observation.

Here we present deep Subaru NIR spectroscopy for 10 EMPGs. Combining the existing optical data, He/H values of 5 out of the 10 EMPGs are reliably derived by the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Adding the existing 3 EMPGs and 51 moderately metal-poor ($0.1-0.4 Z_\odot$) galaxies with reliable He/H estimates, we obtain $Y_\mathrm{P}=0.2370^{+0.0034}_{-0.0033}$ by linear regression in the $\mathrm{(He/H)}-\mathrm{(O/H)}$ plane, where we increase the number of EMPGs from 3 to 8 anchoring He/H of the most metal-poor gas in galaxies. Although our $Y_\mathrm{P}$ measurement and previous measurements are consistent, our result is slightly ($\sim 1σ$) smaller due to our EMPGs. With our $Y_\mathrm{P}$ and the existing primordial deuterium $D_\mathrm{P}$ measurement, we constrain the effective number of neutrino species $N_\mathrm{eff}$ and the baryon-to-photon ratio $η$ showing $\gtrsim 1-2σ$ tensions with the Standard Model and Planck Collaboration et al. (2020). Motivated by the tensions, we allow the degeneracy parameter of electron-neutrino $ξ_e$ to vary as well as $N_\mathrm{eff}$ and $η$. We obtain $ξ_e = 0.05^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$, $N_\mathrm{eff}=3.11^{+0.34}_{-0.31}$, and $η\times10^{10}=6.08^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$ from the $Y_\mathrm{P}$ and $D_\mathrm{P}$ measurements with a prior of $η$ taken from Planck Collaboration et al. (2020). Our constraints suggest a lepton asymmetry and allow for a high value of $N_\mathrm{eff}$ within the $1σ$ level, which could mitigate the Hubble tension.

We study stellar models for Betelgeuse using the HR diagram and surface abundances as observational constraints. Previous studies on Betelgeuse have not systematically investigated the surface abundances, but we believe they can be impacted by, and thus be used as an observational constraint for various parameters such as initial mass, rotation, and overshoot scheme. We investigate stellar models with varying initial mass as they evolve past the main sequence, and we examine the red supergiant (RSG) properties in detail. For each mass, we vary the initial rotation up to $\sim$ 300 $km\:s^{-1}$, and test two different overshoot parameters. Overall, the acceptable initial mass range is 12 to 25 $M_\odot$, but for non-rotating models only, the range is decreased to 15 to 24 $M_\odot$. Also for rotating models, we find that $v/v_{\rm K} = 0.3$ is the upper limit for initial rotation, as more rapidly rotating models are unable to fit to Betelgeuse's surface abundances as an RSG. In addition, we report two possibilities for the current stage of evolution, core helium burning or core carbon burning and beyond. We find that certain 17 $M_\odot$ models could fit to both stages. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results in the context of merger scenarios which have been suggested as a mechanism to attain the observed surface velocity of Betelgeuse.

Strong high-ionization lines such as HeII of young galaxies are puzzling at high and low redshift. Although recent studies suggest the existence of non-thermal sources, whether their ionizing spectra can consistently explain multiple major emission lines remains a question. Here we derive the general shapes of the ionizing spectra for three local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) that show strong HeII$λ$4686. We parameterize the ionizing spectra composed of a blackbody and power-law radiation mimicking various stellar and non-thermal sources. We use photoionization models for nebulae, and determine seven parameters of the ionizing spectra and nebulae by Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, carefully avoiding systematics of abundance ratios. We obtain the general shapes of ionizing spectra explaining $\sim 10$ major emission lines within observational errors with smooth connections from observed X-ray and optical continua. We find that an ionizing spectrum of one EMPG has a blackbody-dominated shape, while the others have convex downward shapes at $>13.6$ eV, which indicate a diversity of the ionizing spectrum shapes. We confirm that the convex downward shapes are fundamentally different from ordinary stellar spectrum shapes, and that the spectrum shapes of these galaxies are generally explained by the combination of the stellar and ultra-luminous X-ray sources. Comparisons with stellar synthesis models suggest that the diversity of the spectrum shapes arises from differences in the stellar age. If galaxies at $z\gtrsim 6$ are similar to the EMPGs, high energy ($>54.4$ eV) photons of the non-stellar sources negligibly contribute to cosmic reionization due to relatively weak radiation.

Recent multi-dimensional simulations suggest that high-entropy buoyant plumes help massive stars to explode. Outwardly protruding iron-rich fingers in the galactic supernova remnant Cassiopeia A are uniquely suggestive of this picture. Detecting signatures of specific elements synthesized in the high-entropy nuclear burning regime (i.e., $α$-rich freeze out) would be among the strongest substantiating evidence. Here we report the discovery of such elements, stable Ti and Cr, at a confidence level greater than 5$σ$ in the shocked high-velocity iron-rich ejecta of Cassiopeia A. We found the observed Ti/Fe and Cr/Fe mass ratios require $α$-rich freeze out, providing the first observational demonstration for the existence of high-entropy ejecta plumes that boosted the shock wave at explosion. The metal composition of the plumes agrees well with predictions for strongly neutrino-processed proton-rich ejecta. These results support the operation of the convective supernova engine via neutrino heating in the supernova that produced Cassiopeia A.

We calculate the neutrino signal from Population III supermassive star collapse using a neutrino transfer code originally developed for core collapse supernovae and massive star collapse. Using this code, we are able to investigate the supermassive star mass range thought to undergo neutrino trapping ($\sim 10^4$ M$_\odot$), a mass range which has been neglected by previous works because of the difficulty of neutrino transfer. For models in this mass range, we observe a neutrino-sphere with a large radius and low density compared to typical massive star neutrino-spheres. We calculate the neutrino light-curve emitted from this neutrino-sphere. The resulting neutrino luminosity is significantly lower than the results of a previous analytical model. We briefly discuss the possibility of detecting a neutrino burst from a supermassive star or the neutrino background from many supermassive stars and conclude that the former is unlikely with current technology, unless the SMS collapse is located as close as 1 Mpc, while the latter is also unlikely even under very generous assumptions. However, the supermassive star neutrino background is still of interest as it may serve as a source of noise in proposed dark matter direct detection experiments.

We perform for the first time a 3D hydrodynamics simulation of the evolution of the last minutes pre-collapse of the oxygen shell of a fast-rotating massive star. This star has an initial mass of 38 M$_\odot$, a metallicity of $\sim$1/50 Z$_\odot$, an initial rotational velocity of 600 km s$^{-1}$, and experiences chemically homogeneous evolution. It has a silicon- and oxygen-rich (Si/O) convective layer at (4.7-17)$\times 10^{8}$ cm, where oxygen-shell burning takes place. The power spectrum analysis of the turbulent velocity indicates the dominance of the large-scale mode ($\ell \sim 3$), which has also been seen in non-rotating stars that have a wide Si/O layer. Spiral arm structures of density and silicon-enriched material produced by oxygen-shell burning appear in the equatorial plane of the Si/O shell. Non-axisymmetric, large-scale ($m \le 3$) modes are dominant in these structures. The spiral arm structures have not been identified in previous non-rotating 3D pre-supernova models. Governed by such a convection pattern, the angle-averaged specific angular momentum becomes constant in the Si/O convective layer, which is not considered in spherically symmetrical stellar evolution models. Such spiral arms and constant specific angular momentum might affect the ensuing explosion or implosion of the star.

We perform a binary population synthesis calculation incorporating very massive population (Pop.) III stars up to 1500 $M_\odot$, and investigate the nature of binary black hole (BBH) mergers. Above the pair-instability mass gap, we find that the typical primary black hole (BH) mass is 135-340 $M_\odot$. The maximum primary BH mass is as massive as 686 $M_\odot$. The BBHs with both of their components above the mass gap have low effective inspiral spin $\sim$ 0. So far, no conclusive BBH merger beyond the mass gap has been detected, and the upper limit on the merger rate density is obtained. If the initial mass function (IMF) of Pop. III stars is simply expressed as $ξ_m(m) \propto m^{-α}$ (single power law), we find that $α\gtrsim 2.8$ is needed in order for the merger rate density not to exceed the upper limit. In the future, the gravitational wave detectors such as Einstein telescope and Pre-DECIGO will observe BBH mergers at high redshift. We suggest that we may be able to impose a stringent limit on the Pop. III IMF by comparing the merger rate density obtained from future observations with that derived theoretically.

We present 3D hydrodynamics simulations of shell burning in two progenitors with zero-age main-sequence masses of 22 and 27 $M_{\odot}$ for $\sim$65 and 200 s up to the onset of gravitational collapse, respectively. The 22 and 27 $M_{\odot}$ stars are selected from a suite of 1D progenitors. The former and the latter have an extended Si- and O-rich layer with a width of $\sim$10$^9$ cm and $\sim$5$\times 10^9$ cm, respectively. Our 3D results show that turbulent mixing occurs in both of the progenitors with the angle-averaged turbulent Mach number exceeding $\sim$0.1 at the maximum. We observe that an episodic burning of O and Ne, which takes place underneath the convection bases, enhances the turbulent mixing in the 22 and 27 $M_\odot$ models, respectively. The distribution of nucleosynthetic yields is significantly different from that in 1D simulations, namely, in 3D more homogeneous and inhomogeneous in the radial and angular direction, respectively. By performing a spectrum analysis, we investigate the growth of turbulence and its role of material mixing in the convective layers. We also present a scalar spherical harmonics mode analysis of the turbulent Mach number. This analytical formula would be helpful for supernova modelers to implement the precollapse perturbations in core-collapse supernova simulations. Based on the results, we discuss implications for the possible onset of the perturbation-aided neutrino-driven supernova explosion.

We investigate the multi-azimuthal angle (MAA) effect on collective neutrino oscillation by considering the three-dimensional neutrino momentum distribution in a realistic electron-capture supernova model with an $8.8 M_{\odot}$ progenitor. We find that the MAA effect induces collective flavor conversions at epochs when it is completely suppressed under the axial-symmetric approximation. This novel activity is switched on/off by the growth of the MAA instability and imprints additional time evolution in the expected neutrino event rate. We validate our results by extending the linear stability analysis into the three-flavor scheme including mixing angles, and confirm that the onset of collective neutrino oscillation matches the steep growth of flavor instability. We discuss how the MAA effect alters neutrino detection at Super-Kamiokande and DUNE.

We calculate the mass ejection of Pop III stars by the pulsational pair-instability (PPI) process using a stellar evolution and hydrodynamical code. If a relatively small, but reasonable value is adopted for the overshooting parameter, the stars do not become red super giants during the PPI phase. We show that in this case most of the hydrogen envelope remains after the mass ejection by PPI. We find that the BH mass could be at most $M = 109 M_\odot$ below the mass range of pair-instability supernovae.

GW190521 is a merger of two black holes (BHs), wherein at least one BH lies within the pair-instability (PI) mass gap, and it is difficult to form because of the effects of PI supernovae (PISNe) and pulsational PI (PPI). In this study, we examined the formation of GW190521-like BH-BHs under Population (Pop) III environments by binary population synthesis calculations. We reveal that convective overshooting in stellar evolution strongly affects the formation of GW190521-like BH-BHs. A model with a small overshoot parameter (similar to GENEC) can form GW190521-like BH-BHs. The derived merger rate is $4 \times 10^{-2}$ ${\rm yr}^{-1}$ ${\rm Gpc}^{-3}$ at a redshift of $\sim 0.82$, which is comparable to the merger rate of GW190521-like BH-BHs inferred by gravitational wave (GW) observations. In this model, a $\sim 90~M_\odot$ star collapses to form a $\sim 90~M_\odot$ BH by avoiding PPI and PISN even if it is a member of a binary star. This is because it expands up to $10^2~R_\odot$, and lose only little mass through binary evolution. However, a model with a large overshoot parameter (similar to Stern) cannot form GW190521-like BH-BHs at all. Thus, we cannot conclude that a Pop~III binary system is the origin of GW190521 because determination of the overshoot parameter involves highly uncertain. If a Pop~III binary system is the origin of GW190521, the merger rate of BH-BHs including a $100-135~M_\odot$ BH is substantially smaller than that of GW190521-like BH-BHs. This will be assessed by GW observations in the near future.

We investigate the possibility of a supernova in supermassive ($5 \times 10^4 \;M_\odot$) population III stars induced by a general relativistic instability occurring in the helium burning phase. This explosion could occur via rapid helium burning during an early contraction of the isentropic core. Such an explosion would be visible to future telescopes and could disrupt the proposed direct collapse formation channel for early universe supermassive black holes. We simulate first the stellar evolution from hydrogen burning using a 1D stellar evolution code with a post Newtonian approximation; at the point of dynamical collapse, we switch to a 1D (general relativistic) hydrodynamics code with the Misner-Sharpe metric. In opposition to a previous study, we do not find an explosion in the non rotating case, although our model is close to exploding for a similar mass to the explosion in the previous study. When we include slow rotation, we find one exploding model, and we conclude that there likely exist additional exploding models, though they may be rare.

We report, for the first time, the detection of the Mn-K$α$ line in the Type IIb supernova (SN IIb) remnant, Cassiopeia A. Manganese ($^{55}$Mn after decay of $^{55}$Co), a neutron-rich element, together with chromium ($^{52}$Cr after decay of $^{52}$Fe), is mainly synthesized at the explosive incomplete Si burning regime. Therefore, the Mn/Cr mass ratio with its neutron excess reflects the neutronization at the relevant burning layer during the explosion. Chandra's archival X-ray data of Cassiopeia A indicate a low Mn/Cr mass ratio with values in the range 0.10--0.66, which, when compared to one-dimensional SN explosion models, requires that the electron fraction be 0.4990 $\lesssim Y_{\rm e} \lesssim$ 0.5 at the incomplete Si burning layer. An explosion model assuming a solar-metallicity progenitor with a typical explosion energy ($1 \times 10^{51}$ erg) fails to reproduce such a high electron fraction. In such models, the explosive Si-burning regime extends only to the Si/O layer established during the progenitor's hydrostatic evolution; the $Y_e$ in the Si/O layer is lower than the value required by our observational constraints. We can satisfy the observed Mn/Cr mass ratio if the explosive Si-burning regime were to extend into the O/Ne hydrostatic layer, which has a higher $Y_{\rm e}$. This would require an energetic ($> 2 \times 10^{51}$ erg) and/or asymmetric explosion of a sub-solar metallicity progenitor ($Z \lesssim 0.5Z_{\odot}$) for Cassiopeia A. The low initial metallicity can be used to rule out a single-star progenitor, leaving the possibility of a binary progenitor with a compact companion (white dwarf, neutron star or black hole). We discuss the detectability of X-rays from Bondi accretion onto such a compact companion around the explosion site. We also discuss other possible mass-loss scenarios for the progenitor system of Cassiopeia A.

We report on robust measurements of elemental abundances of the Type IIn supernova SN 1978K, based on the high-resolution X-ray spectrum obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton. The RGS clearly resolves a number of emission lines, including N Ly$α$, O Ly$α$, O Ly$β$, Fe XVII, Fe XVIII, Ne He$α$ and Ne Ly$α$ for the first time from SN 1978K. The X-ray spectrum can be represented by an absorbed, two-temperature thermal emission model, with temperatures of $kT \sim 0.6$ keV and $2.7$ keV. The elemental abundances are obtained to be N $=$ $2.36_{-0.80}^{+0.88}$, O $=$ $0.20 \pm{0.05}$, Ne $=$ $0.47 \pm{0.12}$, Fe $=$ $0.15_{-0.02}^{+0.01}$ times the solar values. The low metal abundances except for N show that the X-ray emitting plasma originates from the circumstellar medium blown by the progenitor star. The abundances of N and O are far from CNO-equilibrium abundances expected for the surface composition of a luminous blue variable, and resemble the H-rich envelope of less-massive stars with masses of 10-25 M$_\odot$. Together with other peculiar properties of SN 1978K, i.e., a low expansion velocity of 500-1000 km s$^{-1}$ and SN IIn-like optical spectra, we propose that SN 1978K is a result of either an electron-capture SN from a super asymptotic giant branch star, or a weak Fe core-collapse explosion of a relatively low-mass ($\sim$10 M$_\odot$) or high-mass ($\sim$20-25 M$_\odot$) red supergiant star. However, these scenarios can not naturally explain the high mass-loss rate of the order of $\dot{M} \sim 10^{-3} \rm{M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}}$ over $\gtrsim$1000 yr before the explosion, which is inferred by this work as well as many other earlier studies. Further theoretical studies are required to explain the high mass-loss rates at the final evolutionary stages of massive stars.

(Abridged) We aim at linking the dynamical and radiative properties of the remnant of SN 1987A to the geometrical and physical characteristics of the parent aspherical SN explosion and to the internal structure of its progenitor star. We performed 3D hydrodynamic simulations which describe the long-term evolution of SN 1987A from the onset of the SN to the full-fledged remnant at the age of 50 years, accounting for the pre-SN structure of the progenitor star. The simulations include all physical processes relevant for the complex phases of SN evolution and for the interaction of the SNR with the highly inhomogeneous ambient environment around SN 1987A. From the simulations, we synthesize observables to be compared with observations. By comparing the model results with observations, we constrained the initial SN anisotropy causing Doppler shifts observed in emission lines of heavy elements from ejecta, and leading to the remnant evolution observed in the X-ray band in the last 30 years. In particular, we found that the high mixing of ejecta unveiled by high redshifts and broadenings of [FeII] and $^{44}$Ti lines require a highly asymmetric SN explosion channeling a significant fraction of energy along an axis almost lying in the plane of the central equatorial ring around SN 1987A, roughly along the line-of-sight but with an offset of 40 deg, with the lobe propagating away from the observer slightly more energetic than the other. We found unambiguously that the observed distribution of ejecta and the dynamical and radiative properties of the SNR can be best reproduced if the structure of the progenitor star was that of a blue supergiant resulted from the merging of two massive stars.

We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of aspherical core-collapse supernovae focusing on the matter mixing in SN 1987A. The impacts of four progenitor (pre-supernova) models and parameterized aspherical explosions are investigated. The four pre-supernova models include a blue supergiant (BSG) model based on a slow merger scenario developed recently for the progenitor of SN 1987A (Urushibata et al. 2018). The others are a BSG model based on a single star evolution and two red supergiant (RSG) models. Among the investigated explosion (simulation) models, a model with the binary merger progenitor model and with an asymmetric bipolar-like explosion, which invokes a jetlike explosion, best reproduces constraints on the mass of high velocity $^{56}$Ni, as inferred from the observed [Fe II] line profiles. The advantage of the binary merger progenitor model for the matter mixing is the flat and less extended $ρ\,r^3$ profile of the C+O core and the helium layer, which may be characterized by the small helium core mass. From the best explosion model, the direction of the bipolar explosion axis (the strongest explosion direction), the neutron star (NS) kick velocity, and its direction are predicted. Other related implications and future prospects are also given.

We extend the multi-angle computational framework and investigate the time evolution of the neutrino halo on collective neutrino oscillation in the core collapse of an iron core progenitor. We find that in the case of the $9.6\, \rm M_\odot$ progenitor adopted in this work, there are windows of time when the effects of neutrino halo and collective neutrino oscillation are not simultaneously large. Inside the shock, the impact of the inward-scattered halo neutrino cannot in general be neglected compared to the outward-propagating neutrino flux. However, during early epochs, collective neutrino oscillation is effectively shut down by multi-angle matter suppression. During the intermediate epoch, collective neutrino oscillation is not suppressed, but its onset radius is beyond the still relatively small explosion shock front where the halo is prominent. We also find in the case of the $9.6\, \rm M_\odot$ progenitor the halo neutrinos induce a delay in the onset of collective neutrino oscillations. This causes novel flavor conversions which sharpen collective neutrino oscillation spectral features. We predict that the inclusion of neutrino halo effects makes neutrino signals that are more clearly distinct from thermal emission that when halo neutrinos are omitted.
