It was recently proposed that five-dimensional inflation can relate the causal size of the observable universe to the present weakness of gravitational interactions by blowing up an extra compact dimension from the microscopic fundamental length of gravity to a large size in the micron range, as required in the Dark Dimension proposal. Here, we compute the power spectrum of all primordial fluctuations emerging from a 5-dimensional inflaton in a slow-roll region of its potential, showing an interesting change of behaviour at large scales corresponding to angles larger than about 10 degrees in the sky.

Late time acceleration in Palatini gravity

We investigate the effect of the quadratic correction $αR^2$ and non-minimal coupling $ξφ^2 R$ on a quintessence model with an exponential potential $V(φ) = M^4\exp(-λφ)$ in the Palatini formulation of gravity. We investigate the effect of the quadratic correction $αR^2$ and non-minimal coupling $ξφ^2 R$ on a quintessence model with an exponential potential $V(φ) = M^4\exp(-λφ)$ in the Palatini formulation of gravity. We use dynamical system techniques to analyze the attractor structure of the model and uncover the possible trajectories of the system. We find that the quadratic correction cannot play a role in the late time dynamics, except for unacceptably large values of the parameter $α$; although it can play a role at early times. We find viable evolutions, from a matter-dominated phase to an accelerated expansion phase, with the dynamics driven by the non-minimal coupling. These evolutions correspond to trajectories where the field ends up frozen, thus acting as a cosmological constant.

The concept of a small, single-layer water Cherenkov detector, with three photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), placed at its bottom in a $120^{\circ}$ star configuration (\emph{Mercedes} Water Cherenkov Detector) is presented. The PMTs are placed near the lateral walls of the stations with an adjustable inclination and may be installed inside or outside the water volume. To illustrate the technical viability of this concept and obtain a first-order estimation of its cost, an engineering design was elaborated. The sensitivity of these stations to low energy Extensive Air Shower (EAS) electrons, photons and muons is discussed, both in compact and sparse array configurations. It is shown that the analysis of the intensity and time patterns of the PMT signals, using machine learning techniques, enables the tagging of muons, achieving an excellent gamma/hadron discrimination for TeV showers.
This concept minimises the station production and maintenance costs, allowing for a highly flexible and fast installation. Mercedes Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCDs) are thus well-suited for use in high-altitude large gamma-ray observatories covering an extended energy range from the low energies, closing the gap between satellite and ground-based measurements, to very high energy regions, beyond the PeV scale.

The heritage Andean churches of Arica and Parinacota are representative of the majority of Christian churches in the region. Judging by their architecture, materiality and decoration, they have many features in common and are faithful to the intentions of their original builders. However, their geographical locations and the landscape that surrounds these churches show specific features for each of them. In particular, the orientation of the main axes (towards the altar of the churches) shows some diversity. In this extended area, with little attention from parish priests, the local Aymara culture, with its own worldview, surely engaged in a dialogue with the Western tradition in order to design and build the Indian Reductions. In this paper we present the results obtained from the analysis of the precise spatial orientations of all the cataloged churches, employing the tools of archaeoastronomy, as a complement to the architectural, historical and cultural research of the temples. We also comment briefly on some progress that we hope to make in neighboring areas to the region here studied, which include a large number of very old temples and are part, along with the churches here considered, of a common and widespread cultural koine.

Deep neural networks are a powerful technique that have found ample applications in several branches of Physics. In this work, we apply machine learning algorithms to a specific problem of Cosmic Ray Physics: the estimation of the muon content of extensive air showers when measured at the ground. As a working case, we explore the performance of a deep neural network applied to the signals recorded by the water-Cherenkov detectors of the Surface Detector Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We apply deep learning architectures to large sets of simulated data. The inner structure of the neural network is optimized through the use of genetic algorithms. To obtain a prediction of the recorded muon signal in each individual detector, we train neural networks with a mixed sample of light, intermediate and heavy nuclei. When true and predicted signals are compared at detector level, the primary values of the Pearson correlation coefficients are above 95\%. The relative errors of the predicted muon signals are below 10\% and do not depend on the event energy, zenith angle, total signal size, distance range or the hadronic model used to generate the events.
