We study the edge-on galaxy NGC 5775, utilizing a 58.2 ks {\sl Chandra} ACIS-S observation together with complementary {\sl HST} ACS, {\sl Spitzer} IRAC and other multi-wavelength data sets. This edge-on galaxy, with its disk-wide active star formation, is particularly well-suited for studying the disk/halo interaction on sub-galactic scales. We detect 27 discrete X-ray sources within the $D_{25}$ region of the galaxy, including an ultra-luminous source with a 0.3-7 keV luminosity of $\sim7\times10^{40}\rm ergs s^{-1}$. The source-removed diffuse X-ray emission shows several prominent extraplanar features, including a $\sim10\rm kpc$ diameter ``shell-like'' feature and a ``blob'' reaching a projected distance of $\sim25\rm kpc$ from the galactic disk. The bulk of the X-ray emission in the halo has a scale height of $\sim$1.5 kpc and can be characterized by a two-temperature optically thin thermal plasma with temperatures of $\sim$ 0.2 and 0.6 keV and a total 0.3-2 keV luminosity of $\sim3.5\times10^{39}\rm ergs s^{-1}$. The high-resolution, multi-wavelength data reveal the presence of several extraplanar features around the disk, which appear to be associated with the in-disk star formation. We suggest that hot gas produced with different levels of mass loading can have different temperatures, which may explain the characteristic temperatures of hot gas in the halo. We have obtained a sub-galactic scale X-ray-intensity-star formation relation, which is consistent with the integrated version in other star forming galaxies.

HST/ACS Observations of Star Formation Driven Outflows in Nearby Edge-on Spiral Galaxies: Dependence of Halo Morphology on Star Formation Activity

(Abridged). We present new high spatial resolution narrowband imaging observations of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) in four late-type, actively star forming edge-on spirals, obtained with ACS on-board HST. Our F658N (H-alpha) observations reveal a multitude of structures on both small and large scales. Whereas all four galaxies have been studied with ground-based telescopes before, here the small scale structure of the extended emission line gas is presented for the first time at a spatial resolution of 0.05", corresponding to 5.0 pc at the mean distance to the target galaxies. The eDIG morphology is very different for all four targets, probably as a result of their different levels of star formation activity. We find that the morphology of the eDIG, in particular the break-up of diffuse emission into filaments in galaxy halos, shows a strong dependence on the level of star formation activity per unit area, and eDIG can be arranged into a morphological sequence. NGC4634 and NGC5775 have the highest SF rate per unit area in our sample and the observed morphology suggests that the break-up of the smooth eDIG layer into individual resolved filaments occurs only above a certain threshold of SF activity per unit area. Combined with ground-based data for samples that span a larger range of galaxy mass our results indicate that the gravitational potential also plays an important role in the eDIG morphology. In low-mass galaxies the gas can be expelled due to shallow gravitational potentials more easily and couple with strong star formation driven outflows on a local scale. This is in contrast to the more massive galaxies, which show smooth eDIG layers, unless they are powered by a superwind, as in the case of nucleated starburst galaxies.

The Toomre Sequence Revisited with HST/NICMOS: Nuclear Brightness Profiles and Colors of Interacting and Merging Galaxies

We discuss the near-infrared properties of the nuclei in the 11 merging galaxies of the Toomre sequence, based on high spatial resolution J, H, and K imaging data using NICMOS onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The observations are less affected by dust extinction than our previous HST/WFPC2 observations and offer higher spatial resolution than existing ground-based near-IR data. We see a marginal trend for the nuclei to become bluer with advancing merger stage, which we attribute to a dispersal of dust at late times in the merging process. Our data also indicate a statistically significant trend for the nuclei in the sequence to become more luminous, within an aperture of fixed physical size and after correcting for dust extinction, with advancing merger stage. We derive K-band surface brightness profiles for those nuclei for which the morphology allows a meaningful isophotal analysis, and fit the profiles with a ``Nuker law'' for comparison with other samples of galaxies observed with HST. The majority of the nuclei have steep profiles that can be characterized as power-law type. In general, the Toomre sequence galaxies tend to have steeper profiles and higher central luminosity surface densities than E/S0's. We derive V-K color profiles for the nuclei to further address this possibility, but find that the large amounts of dust extinction complicate their interpretation. Overall, our results are consistent with the generic predictions of N-body simulations of spiral galaxy mergers. If left to evolve and fade for several Gyrs, it is possible that the properties of the Toomre sequence nuclei would resemble theproperties of the nuclei of normal E/S0 galaxies. Our results therefore support the view that mergers of spiral galaxies can lead to the formation of early-type galaxies (Abridged).

HST observations have revealed that compact sources exist at the centers of many, maybe even most, galaxies across the Hubble sequence. These sources are called "nuclei" or also "nuclear star clusters" (NCs), given that their structural properties and position in the fundamental plane are similar to those of globular clusters. Interest in NCs increased recently due to the independent and contemporaneous finding of three groups (Rossa et al. for spiral galaxies; Wehner & Harris for dE galaxies; and Cote et al. for elliptical galaxies) that NC masses obey similar scaling relationships with host galaxy properties as do supermassive black holes. Here we summarize the results of our group on NCs in spiral galaxies. We discuss the implications for our understanding of the formation and evolution of NCs and their possible connection to supermassive black holes.

Such outflows have been seen both in starburst galaxies, actively star forming galaxies and galaxies with an AGN. In the latter galaxies it is unknown whether the large-scale outflows are driven by star formation activity or purely by the active nucleus. The aim of our investigation is to study the frequency of extended minor-axis outflows in edge-on Seyfert galaxies to investigate the role of the AGN, the circumnuclear environment and star formation activity within the disk regions, and their importance for IGM enrichment on large scales. Narrowband imaging in two different ionizational stages (H-alpha and [OIII]) was performed to attempt a discrimination between processes associated with the active nucleus and those connected to star forming activity within the disk. The H-alpha morphology of the Seyfert galaxies is usually complex, but only in three out of 14 galaxies did we find evidence for minor axis disk outflows. At the sensitivity of our observations [OIII] emission is generally detected only in the nuclear region. Overall, our results show that extraplanar emission of similar brightness and extent as in the previously known cases of NGC3079 and NGC4388 is not common in Seyfert galaxies of otherwise similar properties. Comparison with our previous results shows that for nearby edge-on spiral galaxies star formation may be a more powerful mechanism for producing DIG than AGN activity. While in general AGN activity undoubtedly plays some role in driving minor-axis outflows, this probably requires higher AGN luminosities than are encountered in our small distance-limited sample.

We investigate the relation between the existence and size of radio halos, which are believed to be created by star formation (SF) related energy input into the interstellar medium, and other galaxy properties, most importantly star formation activity and galaxy mass. Based on radio continuum and H-alpha observations of a sample of seven late-type spiral galaxies we find a direct, linear correlation of the radial extent of gaseous halos on the size of the actively star-forming parts of the galaxy disks. Data of a larger sample of 22 galaxies indicate that the threshold energy input rate into the disk ISM per unit surface area for the creation of a gaseous halo depends on the mass surface density of the galaxy, in the sense that a higher threshold must be surpassed for galaxies with a higher surface density. Because of the good prediction of the existence of a radio halo from these two parameters, we conclude that they are important, albeit not the only contributors. The compactness of the SF-related energy input is also found to be a relevant factor. Galaxies with relatively compact SF distributions are more likely to have gaseous halos than others with more widespread SF activity. These results quantify the so-called "break-out" condition for matter to escape from galaxy disks, as used in all current models of the interstellar medium and first defined by Norman and Ikeuchi (1989).

In Paper I we showed that multi-phase gaseous halos of late-type spiral galaxies, detected in the radio continuum, in Halpha, and in X-rays, are remarkably well correlated regarding their morphology and spatial extent. In this work we present new results from a statistical analysis in order to specify and quantify these phenomenological relations. This is accomplished by investigating soft X-ray (0.3-2.0keV) luminosities, FIR, radio continuum, Halpha, B-band, and UV luminosities for a sample of 23 edge-on late-type spiral galaxies. Typical star formation indicators, such as SFRs, are determined and a statistical correlation analysis is carried out. We find strong linear correlations, covering at least two orders of magnitude, between star formation indicators and integrated (disk+halo) luminosities in all covered wavebands. In addition to the well established L_FIR/L_1.4GHz-relation, we show new and highly significant linear dependencies between integrated soft X-ray luminosities and FIR, radio continuum, Halpha, B-band, and UV luminosities. Moreover, integrated soft X-ray luminosities correlate well with SFRs and the energy input into the ISM by SNe. The same holds if these quantities are plotted against soft halo X-ray luminosities. Only a weak correlation exists between the dust mass of a galaxy and the corresponding X-ray luminosity. Among soft X-ray luminosities, baryonic, and HI-gas masses, no significant correlations are found. There seems to exist a critical input energy by SNe into the ISM or a SFR threshold for multi-phase halos to show up. It is still not clear whether this threshold is a physical or an instrument dependent sensitivity limit. These findings strongly support our previous results, but conflict with the concept of halos being due to infalling gas from the IGM.

(Abridged) We study the nuclear star clusters in spiral galaxies of various Hubble types using spectra obtained with STIS on-board HST. We observed the nuclear clusters in 40 galaxies, selected from two previous HST/WFPC2 imaging surveys. The spectra provide a better separation of cluster light from underlying galaxy light than is possible with ground-based spectra. To infer the star formation history, metallicity and dust extinction, we fit weighted superpositions of single-age stellar population templates to the spectra. The luminosity-weighted age ranges from 10 Myrs to 10 Gyrs. The stellar populations of NCs are generally best fit as a mixture of populations of different ages. This indicates that NCs did not form in a single event, but instead they had additional star formation long after the oldest stars formed. On average, the sample clusters in late-type spirals have a younger luminosity-weighted mean age than those in early-type spirals (log(age/yr) = 8.37+/-0.25 vs. 9.23+/-0.21). The average cluster masses are smaller in late-type spirals than in early-type spirals (log(M/Msun) = 6.25+/-0.21 vs. 7.63+/-0.24), and exceed the masses typical of globular clusters. The cluster mass correlates strongly with both the Hubble type of the host galaxy and the luminosity of its bulge. The latter correlation has the same slope as the well-known correlation between supermassive black hole mass and bulge luminosity. The properties of both nuclear clusters and black holes are therefore intimately connected to the properties of the host galaxy.

(Abridged) As part of an ongoing effort to study the stellar nuclei of very late-type, bulge-less spirals, we present results from a high-resolution spectroscopic survey of nine such nuclear star clusters, undertaken with VLT/UVES. We fit the spectra with population synthesis models and measure Lick-type indices to determine mean luminosity-weighted ages, which range from 4.1*10^7 to 1.1*10^10 years and are insensitive to assumed metallicity or internal extinction. The average metallicity of nuclear clusters in late-type spirals is slightly sub-solar (<Z> = 0.015) but shows significant scatter. The fits also show that the nuclear cluster spectra are best described by a mix of several generations of stars. This is supported by the fact that only models with composite stellar populations yield mass-to-light ratios that match those obtained from dynamical measurements. The last star formation episode was on average 34 Myr ago, while all clusters experienced some star formation in the last 100 Myr. We thus conclude that the nuclear clusters undergo repeated episodes of star formation. The robustness with respect to possible contamination from the underlying galaxy disk is demonstrated by comparison to spectra obtained with HST/STIS. Combining these results with those from Walcher et al. (2005), we have thus shown that the stellar nuclei of these bulge-less galaxies are massive and dense star clusters that form stars recurrently until the present day. This unique set of properties is likely due to the central location of these clusters in their host galaxies.

This study presents first results from an X-ray mini-survey carried out with XMM-Newton to investigate the diffuse Hot Ionized Medium in the halos of nine nearby star-forming edge-on spiral galaxies. Diffuse gaseous X-ray halos are detected in eight of our targets, covering a wide range of star formation rates from quiescent to starburst cases. For four edge-on spiral galaxies, namely NGC3044, NGC3221, NGC4634, and NGC5775, we present the first published high resolution/sensitivity detections of extended soft X-ray halos. EPIC X-ray contour maps overlaid onto Halpha imaging data reveals that in all cases the presence of X-ray halos is correlated with extraplanar Diffuse Ionized Gas. Moreover, these halos are also associated with non-thermal cosmic ray halos, as evidenced by radio continuum observations. Supplemental UV-data obtained with the OM-telescope at 210nm show Diffuse Ionized Gas to be well associated with UV emission originating in the underlying disk. Beside NGC891, NGC4634 is the second non-starburst galaxy with a diffuse soft X-ray halo (|z|<4kpc). In case of NGC3877, for which we also present the first high resolution X-ray imaging data, no halo emission is detectable. EPIC pn spectra (0.3-12keV) of the diffuse X-ray emission are extracted at different offset positions from the disk, giving evidence to a significant decrease of gas temperatures, electron densities, and gas masses with increasing distance to the plane. A comparison between dynamical and radiative cooling time scales implies that the outflow in all targets is likely to be sustained. We find very strong indications that spatially correlated multi-phase gaseous halos are created by star forming activity in the disk plane.

We present deep narrowband observations with high spatial resolution of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas in the halo of NGC891, obtained with the WFPC2 on-board the HST. Our H-alpha observations, centered on the northern part of NGC891, reveal an extended gaseous halo, which fills almost the entire field of view of our WFPC2 observation. The majority of the H-alpha emission is diffuse. Several discrete features (e.g., filaments) are visible as well. Some of the filaments reach distances of up to 2.2 kpc above the galactic plane, and are extremely collimated, even at high galactic latitudes. We compare the morphology of these filaments with theoretical models, which describe possible transport mechanisms in a general way. We also investigate extraplanar dust features, which are best visible in unsharp-masked images of our broadband F675W image, and we compare them to the spatial distribution of DIG filaments. Individual dust features, however, are not spatially correlated with diffuse ionized gas counterparts, such as individual filaments. Quite interestingly, the orientation of the dust features changes from being mostly aligned perpendicular to the disk at low galactic latitudes, to a parallel alignment at high |z|. We compare the diffuse ionized gas distribution to the hot ionized medium, traced by X-ray observations performed by Chandra. There exists a good correlation of the presence of the warm and hot ionized gas, in particular, an X-ray bright region at |z| ~ 1-1.5 kpc fills the entire northern halo region, whereas the intensity in the midplane is considerably depressed. We also compare the sizes of individual H-alpha emission line features in the midplane of NGC891 with similar structures that are known in our Milky Way and in the LMC.

We report on the properties of nuclear regions in the Toomre Sequence of merging galaxies, based on imaging data gathered with the Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 camera. We have imaged the 11 systems in the proposed evolutionary merger sequence in the F555W and F814W broad-band filters, and in H-alpha+[NII] narrow-band filters. The broad-band morphology of the nuclear regions varies from non-nucleated starburst clumps through dust-covered nuclei to a nucleated morphology. There is no unambiguous trend in the morphology with merger stage. The emission-line morphology is extended beyond the nucleus in most cases, but centrally concentrated (within 1 kpc) emission-line gas can be seen in the four latest-stage merger systems. We have quantified the intrinsic luminosity densities and colors within the inner 100 pc and 1 kpc of each identified nucleus. We find little evidence for a clear trend in nuclear properties along the merger sequence, other than a suggestive rise in the nuclear luminosity density in the most evolved members of the sequence. The lack of clear trends in nuclear properties is likely due both to the effects of obscuration and geometry, as well as the physical variety of galaxies included in the Toomre Sequence.

In this second paper on the investigation of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas in nearby edge-on spiral galaxies we present the actual results of the individual galaxies of our H-alpha imaging survey. A grand total of 74 galaxies have been studied, including the 9 galaxies of a recently studied sub-sample (Rossa & Dettmar 2000). 40.5% of all studied galaxies reveal extraplanar diffuse ionized gas, whereas in 59.5% of the survey galaxies no extraplanar diffuse ionized gas could be detected. The average distances of this extended emission above the galactic midplane range from 1-2 kpc, while individual filaments in a few galaxies reach distances of up to |z| ~ 6 kpc. In several cases a pervasive layer of ionized gas was detected, similar to the Reynolds layer in our Milky Way, while other galaxies reveal only extended emission locally. The morphology of the diffuse ionized gas is discussed for each galaxy and is compared with observations of other important ISM constituents in the context of the disk-halo connection, in those cases where published results were available. Furthermore, we present the distribution of extraplanar dust in these galaxies, based on an analysis of the unsharp-masked R-band images. The results are compared with the distribution of the diffuse ionized gas.

In a series of two papers we present results of a new H-alpha imaging survey, aiming at the detection of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas in halos of late-type spiral galaxies. We have investigated a sample of 74 nearby edge-on spirals, covering the northern and southern hemisphere. In 30 galaxies we detected extraplanar diffuse emission at mean distances of |z|~1-2 kpc. Individual filaments can be traced out to |z|<= 6 kpc in a few cases. We find a good correlation between the FIR flux ratio (S_60/S_100) and the SFR per unit area (L_FIR/D^2_25), based on the detections/non-detections. This is actually valid for starburst, normal and for quiescent galaxies. A minimal SFR per unit area for the lowest S_60/S_100 values, at which extended emission has been detected, was derived, which amounts to (dE/dt)_A25^thres = (3.2+-0.5)x10E+40 erg/s/kpc^2. There are galaxies where extraplanar emission was detected at smaller values of L_FIR/D^2_25, however, only in combination with a significantly enhanced dust temperature. The results corroborate the general view that the gaseous halos are a direct consequence of SF activity in the underlying galactic disk.

Contrary to recent findings for galactic winds, the correlation between H-alpha and X-ray surface brightness is not good. The X-ray spectrum of this diffuse gas cannot be fitted with the LMC abundance pattern, but implies an overabundance of at least oxygen and neon, consistent with recent enrichment from supernovae type II. Some indications for enhanced mixing at the brightest region of the H-alpha shell and for a beginning outflow of the hot gas were also detected.

In this letter we present first results from spectroscopic observations of Diffuse Ionized Gas (DIG) in the halo of NGC5775 obtained with FORS1 attached to UT1/Antu of the Very Large Telescope (VLT). At our slit position perpendicular to the disk (41" SE of the nucleus) the emission of [NII]6583, [OIII]5007, and [OII]3727 is detected out to 9 kpc into the halo, allowing possible ionization mechanisms of the DIG to be examined. Photoionization models which assume a dilute radiation field are able to fit the data for the disk, but they cannot account for the line ratios measured in the halo (e.g., [OI]/Halpha or [OII]/Halpha). In particular they fail to predict the observed increase of [OIII]5007/Halpha with increasing z. The most striking result concerns the kinematics of the halo gas. Velocities at high galactic latitudes drop from the midplane value to reach the systemic velocity at z ~ 9 kpc. An analysis of VLA archive data of the polarized radio-continuum emission at 4.86 GHz and 1.49 GHz reveals that magnetic fields in the halo have a strong component perpendicular to the disk and are aligned with the Halpha and radio-continuum spurs in the halo. This can result either from a strong wind action or, more likely, from the generation of dipolar magnetic fields. We briefly discuss the interrelation of the magnetic field structure and gas dynamics, in particular the role of magnetic fields in gas outflows, as well as the possible heating of DIG by magnetic reconnection.

We present a high spatial and spectral resolution 2-D echelle spectrogram of the Narrow-Line Region in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1386. This Seyfert galaxy was observed with CASPEC in the wavelength range 5270-7725 Angstrom which covers the H-alpha and the [N II] lines. With the use of spatially high resolved images taken with the WFPC2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope we could identify individual components of the Narrow-Line Region in our spectra. A Gaussian decomposition of the spectra revealed 9 distinct emission-line complexes. The brightest component is blue-shifted by -120+-10 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity and shows an offset of -1.6" relative to the nucleus of the galaxy. The true nucleus of NGC1386 has a much lower apparent H-alpha luminosity than this component. The nucleus is probably highly absorbed. Although the majority of the Narrow-Line Region components follows a regular velocity field, we find evidence for a separate kinematic component. The Narrow-Line Region is aligned anti-parallel to the radio-jet which propagates from the center of NGC1386 to the south.

We present narrowband H-alpha imaging data of a small survey of nearby edge-on spiral galaxies, aiming at the detection of `extraplanar' diffuse ionized gas (DIG). A few of our studied edge-on spirals show signs of disk-halo interaction (DHI), where extended line emission far above the galactic plane of these galaxies is detected. In some cases an extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) layer is discovered, e.g., NGC4634, NGC 3044, while other galaxies show only filamentary features reaching into the halo (e.g., IC 2531) and some galaxies show no sign of eDIG at all. The extraplanar distances of the DIG layer in our narrowband H-alpha images reach values of z<= 2 kpc above the galactic plane. The derived star formation rates (SFRs) from the H-alpha flux of the studied galaxies range from 0.05-0.7 M_{sun}/yr, neglecting a correction for internal absorption. The variation of the SFR values among our sample galaxies reflects the diversity of star formation within this sample. A diagnostic diagram is introduced, which allows to predict the existence of gas halos in `quiescent' galaxies based on the ratio S_{60}/S_{100} versus L_{FIR} / D^2_{25} in this diagram. We compare the positions of the non--starburst galaxies with starburst galaxies, since these galaxies populate distinct positions in these diagrams.
