The effective mass of Abrikosov vortices in superconductors remains a challenging problem with limited experimental verification. In this paper, we present a method based on observation of the vortex mass in magnetic circular dichroism at terahertz frequencies. We demonstrate the emergence of dichroism with decreasing temperature in two YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ thin films of different doping. The experimental results can be explained within a theoretical model that takes into account the vortex mass and provides an expression for the optical complex conductivity. We discuss the model parameters and show how they are obtained from the supporting experiments.

Abstract:
The complex conductivity of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ samples representing the optimally doped, the underdoped and the overdoped stoichiometry was measured using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. In the normal state, the frequency dependence is described by the Drude model. Below the critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$, the two-fluid model was successfully employed to fit all the spectra, from 5 K up to $T_\mathrm{c}$. The temperature behaviour of fundamental parameters such as the scattering time $τ$, the superfluid fraction $f_\mathrm{s}$ and the conductivity $σ$ was investigated at given frequencies. The real part of the conductivity $σ_1(T)$ exhibits a coherence-like peak at low frequencies, which slightly shifts with increasing frequency whereas its height decreases. It can be observed for all three stoichiometries and its exact shape depends on the quality of the sample. A further analysis shows that this peak is a consequence of the competition between the scattering time $τ(T)$ and the superfluid fraction $f_\mathrm{s}(T)$. The decrease of the superfluid fraction towards $T_\mathrm{c}$ depends on the reduced temperature with a power law close to 2, suggesting a dirty d-wave superconductor case for all levels of doping.

Optical conductivity of a moderately disordered superconducting NbN film was investigated by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in external magnetic field applied along the film plane. The film thickness of about 5 nm was comparable with the coherence length, so vortices should not form. Optical conductivity of a moderately disordered superconducting NbN film was investigated by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in external magnetic field applied along the film plane. The film thickness of about 5 nm was comparable with the coherence length, so vortices should not form. This was confirmed by the fact that no marked difference between the spectra with terahertz electric field set perpendicular and parallel to the external magnetic field was observed. Simultaneous use of Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory and the model of optical conductivity by Herman and Hlubina proved to correctly reproduce the terahertz spectra obtained experimentally in a magnetic field of up to 7 T. This let us conclude that the magnetic field tends to suppress the superconductivity, resulting in an inhomogeneous state where superconducting domains are enclosed within a normal-state matrix. The scattering rate due to pair-breaking effects was found to linearly increase with magnetic field.

Mass of Abrikosov vortices defied experimental observation for more than four decades. We demonstrate a method of its detection in high-temperature superconductors. Similarly to electrons, fluxons circulate in the direction given by the magnetic field, causing circular dichroism. We report the magneto-transmittance of a nearly optimally doped thin YBaCuO film, measured using circularly polarized submillimeter waves. The circular dichroism emerges in the superconducting state and increases with dropping temperature. Our results confirm the dominant role of quasiparticle states in the vortex core and yield the diagonal fluxon mass of 2.2 x 10^8 electron masses per centimeter at 45 K and zero-frequency limit and even larger off-diagonal mass of 4.9 x 10^8 electron masses per centimeter.

Abstract:
Transmission of terahertz waves through a thin layer of the superconductor NbN deposited on an anisotropic R-cut sapphire substrate is studied as a function of temperature in a magnetic field oriented parallel with the sample. A significant difference is found between transmitted intensities of beams linearly polarized parallel with and perpendicular to the direction of applied magnetic field.

We studied a thin superconducting NbN film in magnetic fields up to 8 T above the zero- temperature limit by means of time-domain terahertz and scanning tunneling spectroscopies in order to understand the vortex response. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy was used to determine the optical gap and the upper critical field of the sample. The obtained values were subsequently used to fit the terahertz complex conductivity spectra in the magnetic field in the Faraday geometry above the zero temperature limit. These spectra are best described in terms of the Coffey-Clem self-consistent solution of a modified London equation in the flux creep regime.
