The honeycomb Mott insulator $α$-RuCl$_3$ loses its low-temperature magnetic order by pressure. We report clear evidence for a dimerized structure at $P>1$ GPa and observe the breakdown of the relativistic $j_{\rm eff}$ picture in this regime strongly affecting the electronic properties. A pressure-induced Kitaev quantum spin liquid cannot occur in this broken symmetry state. We shed light on the new phase by broad-band infrared spectroscopy of the low-temperature properties of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ and ab initio density functional theory calculations, both under hydrostatic pressure.

Single-crystal x-ray diffraction studies with synchrotron radiation on the honeycomb iridate $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ reveal a pressure-induced structural phase transition with symmetry lowering from monoclinic to triclinic at a critical pressure of $P_{c}$ = 3.8 GPa. According to the evolution of the lattice parameters with pressure, the transition mainly affects the $ab$ plane and thereby the Ir hexagon network, leading to the formation of Ir--Ir dimers. These observations are independently predicted and corroborated by our \textit{ab initio} density functional theory calculations where we find that the appearance of Ir--Ir dimers at finite pressure is a consequence of a subtle interplay between magnetism, correlation, spin-orbit coupling, and covalent bonding. Our results further suggest that at $P_{c}$ the system undergoes a magnetic collapse. Finally we provide a general picture of competing interactions for the honeycomb lattices $A_{2}$$M$O$_{3}$ with $A$= Li, Na and $M$ = Ir, Ru.

Starting from an {\it ab initio}-derived two-site dimer Hubbard hamiltonian on a triangular lattice, we calculate the superconducting gap functions and critical temperatures for representative $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X superconductors by solving the linearized Eliashberg equation using the Two-Particle Self-Consistent approach (TPSC) extended to multi-site problems. Such an extension allows for the inclusion of molecule degrees of freedom in the description of these systems. We present both, benchmarking results for the half-filled dimer model as well as detailed investigations for the 3/4-filled molecule model. Remarkably, we find in the latter model that the phase boundary between the two most competing gap symmetries discussed in the context of these materials -d$_{xy}$ and the recently proposed eight-node gap s+d$_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry- is located within the regime of realistic model parameters and is especially sensitive to the degree of in-plane anisotropy in the materials as well as to the value of the on-site Hubbard repulsion. We show that these results provide a more complete and accurate description of the superconducting properties of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X than previous Random Phase Approximation (RPA) calculations and, in particular, we discuss predicted critical temperatures in comparison to experiments. Finally, our findings suggest that it may be even easier to experimentally switch between the two pairing symmetries as previously anticipated by invoking pressure, chemical doping or disorder effects.

The absence of both spin freezing and of a static Jahn-Teller effect have lead to the proposition that Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$ is a quantum spin-orbital liquid. However, theoretical understanding of the microscopic origin of this behavior has been hampered by a lack of consensus on the lattice structure. Cu ions have been proposed to realize either a triangular lattice, a short-range ordered honeycomb lattice or a disordered lattice with stripelike correlations. Here we analyze the stability of idealized versions of these arrangements using density functional theory. We find stripe order of Cu ions to be energetically favored, hinting towards stripelike local Cu-Cu arrangements, while long-range order is presumably hindered due to disorder effects. Furthermore, we find evidence of significant interlayer interactions between Cu-Sb dumbbells, which affects the out-of-plane arrangement. Analysis of the relaxed crystal structures, electronic properties and tight-binding parameters provides clues as to the nature of the Jahn-Teller distortions.

In the framework of a multiorbital Hubbard model description of superconductivity, a matrix formulation of the superconducting pairing interaction that has been widely used is designed to treat spin, charge and orbital fluctuations within a random phase approximation (RPA). In terms of Feynman diagrams, this takes into account particle-hole ladder and bubble contributions as expected. It turns out, however, that this matrix formulation also generates additional terms which have the diagrammatic structure of vertex corrections. Here we examine these terms and discuss the relationship between the matrix-RPA superconducting pairing interaction and the Feynman diagrams that it sums.

The symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in quasi-two-dimensional BEDT-TTF organic superconductors is a subject of ongoing debate. We report ab initio density functional theory calculations for a number of organic superconductors containing $κ$-type layers. Using projective Wannier functions we derive parameters of a common low-energy Hamiltonian based on individual BEDT-TTF molecular orbitals. In a random phase approximation spin-fluctuation approach we investigate the evolution of the superconducting pairing symmetry within this model and point out a phase-transition between extended $s + d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{xy}$ symmetry. We discuss the origin of the mixed order parameter and the relation between the realistic molecule description and the widely used dimer approximation. Based on our ab initio calculations we position the investigated materials in the obtained molecule model phase diagram and simulate scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments for selected cases. Our calculations show that many $κ$-type materials lie close to the phase transition line between the two pairing symmetry types found in our calculation, possibly explaining the multitude of contradictory experiments in this field.

Motivated by recent spin- and angular-resolved photoemission (SARPES) measurements performed on the two-dimensional electronic states confined near the (001) surface of SrTiO$_3$ in the presence of oxygen vacancies, we explore their spin structure by means of ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations of slabs. Relativistic nonmagnetic DFT calculations display Rashba-like spin winding with a splitting of a few meV and when surface magnetism on the Ti ions is in- cluded, bands become spin-split with an energy difference ~100 meV at the $Γ$ point, consistent with SARPES findings. While magnetism tends to suppress the effects of the relativistic Rashba interaction, signatures of it are still clearly visible in terms of complex spin textures. Furthermore, we observe an atomic specialization phenomenon, namely, two types of electronic contributions: one is from Ti atoms neighboring the oxygen vacancies that acquire rather large magnetic moments and mostly create in-gap states; another comes from the partly polarized t$_{2g}$ itinerant electrons of Ti atoms lying further away from the oxygen vacancy, which form the two-dimensional electron system and are responsible for the Rashba spin winding and the spin splitting at the Fermi surface.

We report a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the superconducting state in the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br. Applying spin-fluctuation theory to a low-energy material-specific Hamiltonian derived from ab initio density functional theory we calculate the quasiparticle density of states in the superconducting state. We find a distinct three-peak structure that results from a strongly anisotropic mixed-symmetry superconducting gap with eight nodes and twofold rotational symmetry. This theoretical prediction is supported by low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy on in situ cleaved single crystals of $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br with the tunneling direction parallel to the layered structure.

We investigate these three systems within density functional theory and find that the $α'$ layer shows different degrees of charge order for the two $κ$-$α'$ systems and directly influences the electronic behavior of the conducting $κ$ layer. We discuss the origin of the distinct behavior of the three polymorphs and propose a minimal tight-binding Hamiltonian for the description of these systems based on projective molecular Wannier functions.

We have investigated experimentally and theoretically the series (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_{x}$)$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$. Contrary to what has been believed so far, only for $x\leq0.25$ the system forms uniform solid solutions. For larger Li content, as evidenced by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and density functional theory calculations, the system shows a miscibility gap and a phase separation into an ordered Na$_{3}$LiIr$_2$O$_{6}$ phase with alternating Na$_3$ and LiIr$_2$O$_6$ planes, and a Li-rich phase close to pure Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$. For $x\leq 0.25$ we observe (1) an increase of $c/a$ with Li doping up to $x=0.25$, despite the fact that $c/a$ in pure Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ is smaller than in Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$, and (2) a gradual reduction of the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_{N}$ and ordered moment. The previously proposed magnetic quantum phase transition at $x\approx 0.7$ may occur in a multiphase region and its nature needs to be re-evaluated.
