Spin-nematic and spin-smectic phases have been reported in magnetic materials, which break rotational symmetry while preserving translational symmetry along certain directions. However, until now the analogy to liquid crystals remained incomplete because no magnetic analog of cholesteric order was known. Here we show that the bilayer perovskite Sr$_3$Fe$_2$O$_7$, previously believed to adopt a simple single-$\mathbf{q}$ spin-helical order, hosts two distinct types of multi-$\mathbf{q}$ spin textures and the first "spin-cholesteric". Its ground state represents a novel multi-$\mathbf{q}$ spin texture with unequally intense spin modulations at the two ordering vectors. This is followed in temperature by the new "spin-cholesteric" phase with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry, in which the translational symmetry is broken only along one of the crystal directions while the weaker orthogonal modulation melts, giving rise to intense short-range dynamical fluctuations. Shortly before the transition to the paramagnetic state, vortex-crystal order spanned by two equivalent $\mathbf{q}$ vectors emerges. The "spin-cholesteric" phase completes the spin analogy with liquid crystals and renders Sr$_3$Fe$_2$O$_7$ a touchstone for studying transitions among multiple-$\mathbf{q}$ spin textures in a centrosymmetric host.

EuAl$_4$ is a rare earth intermetallic in which competing itinerant and/or indirect exchange mechanisms give rise to a complex magnetic phase diagram, including a centrosymmetric skyrmion lattice. EuAl$_4$ is a rare earth intermetallic in which competing itinerant and/or indirect exchange mechanisms give rise to a complex magnetic phase diagram, including a centrosymmetric skyrmion lattice. These phenomena arise not in the tetragonal parent structure but in the presence of a charge density wave (CDW), which lowers the crystal symmetry and renormalizes the electronic structure. Microscopic knowledge of the corresponding atomic modulations and their driving mechanism is a prerequisite for a deeper understanding of the resulting equilibrium of electronic correlations and how it might be manipulated. Here, we use synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction, inelastic X-ray scattering, and lattice dynamics calculations to clarify the origin of the CDW in EuAl$_4$. We observe a broad softening of a transverse acoustic phonon mode that sets in well above room temperature and, at $T_\mathrm{CDW}=142$ K, freezes out in an atomic displacement mode described by the superspace group $Immm(00γ)s00$. In the context of previous work, our observation is a clear confirmation that the CDW in EuAl$_4$ is driven by electron-phonon coupling. This result is relevant for a wider family of BaAl$_4$ and ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type rare-earth intermetallics known to combine CDW instabilities and complex magnetism.

The topology of electronic and phonon band structures of graphene is well studied and known to exhibit a Dirac cone at the K point of the Brillouin zone. Here, we applied inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) along with $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations to investigate phonon topology in graphite, the 3D analogue of graphene. We identified a pair of modes that form a very weakly gapped linear anticrossing at the K point that can be essentially viewed as a Dirac cone approximant. The IXS intensity in the vicinity of the quasi-Dirac point reveals a harmonic modulation of the phonon spectral weight above and below the Dirac energy, which was previously proposed as an experimental fingerprint of the nontrivial topology. We illustrate how the topological winding of IXS intensity can be understood in terms of atomic displacements, and highlight that the intensity winding is not in fact sensitive in telling quasi- and true Dirac points apart.

The cubic perovskite SrFeO$_3$ was recently reported to host hedgehog- and skyrmion-lattice phases in a highly symmetric crystal structure which does not support the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions commonly invoked to explain such magnetic order. Hints of a complex magnetic phase diagram have also recently been found in powder samples of the single-layer Ruddlesden-Popper analog Sr$_2$FeO$_4$, so a reinvestigation of the bilayer material Sr$_3$Fe$_2$O$_7$, believed to be a simple helimagnet, is called for. Our magnetization and dilatometry studies reveal a rich magnetic phase diagram with at least 6 distinct magnetically ordered phases and strong similarities to that of SrFeO$_3$. In particular, at least one phase is apparently multiple-$\mathbf{q}$, and the $\mathbf{q}$s are not observed to vary among the phases. Since Sr$_3$Fe$_2$O$_7$ has only two possible orientations for its propagation vector, some of the phases are likely exotic multiple-$\mathbf{q}$ order, and it is possible to fully detwin all phases and more readily access their exotic physics.

We present a comprehensive study of static and dynamic magnetic properties in the Ising-like dipolar antiferromagnet (AFM) DyScO$_3$\ by means of DC and AC magnetization measurements supported by classical Monte-Carlo calculations. Our AC-susceptibility data show that the magnetic dynamics exhibit a clear crossover from an Arrhenius-like regime to quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) at $T^* = 10$ K. Below $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 3.2$ K DyScO$_3$ orders in an antiferromagnetic $GxAy$-type magnetic structure and the magnetization dynamics slow down to the minute timescale. The low-temperature magnetization curves exhibit complex hysteretic behavior, which depends strongly on the magnetic field sweep rate. We demonstrate that the low-field anomalies on the magnetization curve are related to the metamagnetic transition, while the hysteresis at higher fields is induced by a strong magnetocaloric effect. Our theoretical calculations, which take into account dipolar interaction between Dy$^{3+}$ moments, reproduce essential features of the magnetic behavior of DyScO$_3$. We demonstrate that DyScO$_3$ represents a rare example of inorganic compound, which exhibits QTM at a single-ion level and magnetic order due to classical dipolar interaction.
