The local electric field gradients and magnetic dynamics of TaSb$_2$ have been studied using $^{121}$Sb, $^{123}$Sb, and $^{181}$Ta nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) with density functional theory (DFT) calculations using XRD-determined crystal structures. By measuring all structurally expected thirteen NQR lines, the nuclear quadrupole coupling constant ($ν_Q$) and asymmetric parameter ($η$) for Ta, Sb(1), and Sb(2) sites were obtained. These values are all in good agreement with the presented DFT calculations. Principal axes of the electric field gradients was determined for a single-crystal sample by measuring the angular dependencies of NMR frequency under a weak magnetic field. The unusual temperature dependence of $η$(T) of Sb(2) hints at the suppressed thermal expansion along the $a$-axis. Spin lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1T$) measurements reveal an activated-type behavior and an upturn below 30 K. Neither the low temperature upturn nor the high temperature activation type behaviors are reproduced by the calculated $1/T_1T$ based on the calculated density of states (DOS). On the other hand, the agreement between the calculated DOS and specific heat measurements indicates that the band renormalization is small. This fact indicates that TaSb$_2$ deviates from the simple semimetal scenario, and magnetic excitations are not captured by Fermi liquid theory.

Following how the electrical transistor revolutionized the field of electronics, the realization of an optical transistor in which the flow of light is controlled optically should open the long-sought era of optical computing and new data processing possibilities. However, such function requires photons to influence each other, an effect which is unnatural in free space. Here it is shown that a ferroelectric and photovoltaic crystal gated optically at the onset of its bandgap energy can act as a photonic transistor. The light-induced charge generation and distribution processes alter the internal electric field and therefore impact the optical transmission with a memory effect and pronounced nonlinearity. The latter results in an optical computing possibility, which does not need to operate coherently. These findings advance efficient room temperature optical transistors, memristors, modulators and all-optical logic circuits.

Our studies evidence an anisotropic magnetic order below $T_N = 32$~K. Susceptibility data in small fields of about 1~T reveal an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order for $H \perp c$, whereas for $H \parallel c$ the data are reminiscent of a field-induced ferromagnetic (FM) structure. At low temperatures and for $H \perp c$, the field-dependent magnetization and AC susceptibility data evidence a metamagnetic transition at $H^+ = 5$~T, which is absent for $H \parallel c$. We assign this to a transition from a planar cycloidal spin structure at low fields to a planar fan-like arrangement above $H^+$. A fully FM polarized state is obtained above the saturation field of $H_{\perp S} = 23.7$~T at 2~K with a magnetization of $M_s = 2.8$~$μ_{\rm B}{\rm /Cr}$. For $H \parallel c$, $M(H)$ monotonously increases and saturates at the same $M_s$ value at $H_{\parallel S} = 25.1$~T at 4.2~K. Above $T_N $, the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat indicate signatures of two dimensional (2D) frustration related to the presence of planar ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. We found a pronounced nearly isotropic maximum in both properties at about $T^* = 45$~K, which is a clear fingerprint of short-range correlations and emergent spin fluctuations. Calculations based on a planar 2D Heisenberg model support our experimental findings and suggest a predominant FM exchange among nearest and AFM exchange among third-nearest neighbors. Only a minor contribution might be assigned to the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction possible related to the non-centrosymmetric polar space group $R3m$. Due to these competing interactions, the magnetism in AgCrSe$_{2}$, in contrast to the oxygen based delafossites, can be tuned by relatively small, experimentally accessible, magnetic fields, allowing us to establish the complete anisotropic magnetic $H-T$ phase diagram in detail.

Crystals of the chemical elements manganese, tellurium, and selenium can show the effects of handedness. In order to sense the possible effects of a changing sense of chirality on the properties of samples from these elements, the potential presence of two, enantiomorphic, physically different, variants of these elemental crystal structures needs to be resolved in crystallographic analyses. Due to fundamental limitations of kinematical X-ray scattering in crystals, however, the effects of chirality in single-element crystals are very difficult to sense using standard X-ray diffraction techniques. In the present paper, we show that dynamical Kikuchi diffraction in the scanning electron microscope is sensitive to the local sense of chirality in crystals of single chemical elements. We demonstrate chirality assignment in $β$-manganese, and we determine the sense of crystal chirality from Kikuchi diffraction patterns of the trigonal structures of tellurium and selenium.

The search for topological states in strongly correlated electron systems has renewed the interest in the Kondo insulator SmB6. One of the most intriguing previous results was an anomalous electron spin resonance spectrum in Gd-doped SmB6. This spectrum was attributed to Gd2+ ions because it could be very well decribed by a model considering a change in the valence from Gd3+ to Gd2+, a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect and a 4f7 5d1 ground state in the Hamiltonian. In our work, we have revisited this scenario using electron spin resonance and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy measurements. Our results suggest that the resonance is produced by Gd2+ ions; however the resonance stems from an extrinsic oxide impurity phase that lies on the surface of the crystal.

The notion of a simple ordered state implies homogeneity. If the order is established by a broken symmetry, elementary Landau theory of phase transitions shows that only one symmetry mode describes this state. Precisely at points of phase coexistence domain states formed of large regions of different phases can be stabilized by long range interactions. In uniaxial antiferromagnets the so-called metamagnetism is an example of such a behavior, when an antiferromagnetic and field-induced spin-polarized paramagnetic/ferromagnetic state co-exist at a jump-like transition in the magnetic phase diagram. Here, combining experiment with theoretical analysis, we show that a different type of mixed state between antiferromagnetism and ferromagnetism can be created in certain acentric materials. In the small-angle neutron scattering experiments we observe a field-driven spin-state in the layered antiferromagnet Ca3Ru2O7, which is modulated on a scale between 8 and 20 nm and has both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic parts. We call this state a metamagnetic texture and explain its appearance by the chiral twisting effects of the asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) exchange. The observation can be understood as an extraordinary coexistence, in one thermodynamic state, of spin orders belonging to different symmetries. Experimentally, the complex nature of this metamagnetic state is demonstrated by measurements of anomalies in electronic transport which reflect the spin-polarization in the metamagnetic texture, determination of the magnetic orbital moments, which supports the existence of strong spin-orbit effects, a pre-requisite for the mechanism of twisted magnetic states in this material.

Thermodynamic measurements reveal magnetic transitions at $T_{\mathrm{N1}}\approx$ 2.9 K and $T_{\mathrm{N2}}\approx$ 2.4 K. Electrical resistivity shows behaviour typical for Kondo lattices. The coexistence of magnetic order and valence fluctuations in a Kondo lattice system we attribute to a peculiar crystal structure in which Ce ions occupy two distinct lattice sites. Analysis of the structural features of Ce$_2$Rh$_3$Sn$_5$, together with results of electronic band structure calculations and thermodynamic data indicate that Ce2 ions are in an intermediate valence state with the ground state electronic configuration close to 4$f^0$, whereas Ce1 ions are trivalent (4$f^1$) and contribute to the low temperature magnetic ordering. Thus, our joined experimental and theoretical investigations classify Ce$_2$Rh$_3$Sn$_5$ as a multivalent charge-ordered system.

We present a comprehensive study of synthesis, structure analysis, transport and thermodynamic properties of the C14 Laves phase Ta(Fe1-xVx)2. Our measurements confirm the appearance of spin-density wave (SDW) order within a dome-like region of the x - T phase diagram with vanadium content 0.02 < x < 0.3. Our results indicate that on approaching TaFe2 from the vanadium-rich side, ferromagnetic (FM) correlations increase faster than the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ones. This results in an exchange-enhanced susceptibility and in the suppression of the SDW transition temperature for x < 0.13 forming the dome-like shape of the phase diagram. This effect is strictly related to a significant lattice distortion of the crystal structure manifested in the c/a ratio. At x = 0.02 both FM and AFM energy scales have similar strength and the system remains paramagnetic down to 2 K with an extremely large Stoner enhancement factor of about 400. Here, spin fluctuations dominate the temperature dependence of the resistivity ρ~ T ^ 3/2 and of the specific heat C/T ~ - log(T) which deviate from their conventional Fermi liquid forms, inferring the presence of a quantum critical point of dual nature.

This new type of structure with space group $P$6/$mmm$, comprises $TM$ slabs containing isolated planar hexagonal [B$_6$] rings and iron centered $TM$ columns in a Kagome type of arrangement. Chemical bonding analysis in Nb$_7$Fe$_3$B$_8$ by means of the electron localizability approach reveals two-center interactions forming the Kagome net of Fe and embedded B, while weaker multicenter bonding present between this net and Nb atoms. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order below $T_N$ = 240 K for Nb$_7$Fe$_3$B$_8$ and $T_N$ =265 K for Ta$_7$Fe$_3$B$_8$. Small remnant magnetization below 0.01 $μ_B$/f.u. is observed in the antiferromagnetic state. The bulk nature of the magnetic transitions was confirmed by the hyperfine splitting of the Mößbauer spectra, the sizable anomalies in the specific heat capacity, and the kinks in the resistivity curves. The high-field paramagnetic susceptibilities fitted by the Curie-Weiss law show effective paramagnetic moments $μ_{eff}$ about 3.1 $μ_B$/Fe in both compounds. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity also reveals metallic character of both compounds. Density functional calculations corroborate the metallic behaviour of both compounds and demonstrate the formation of a sizable local magnetic moment on the Fe-sites. They indicate the presence of both antiferro- and ferromagnetic interactions.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) were used to probe the oxidation state and element specific magnetic moments of Mn in Heusler compounds with different crystallographic structure. The results were compared with theoretical calculations, and it was found that in full Heusler alloys, Mn is metallic (oxidation state near 0) on both sublattices. The magnetic moment is large and localized when octahedrally coordinated by the main group element, consistent with previous theoretical work, and reduced when the main group coordination is tetrahedral. By contrast, in the half Heusler compounds the magnetic moment of the Mn atoms is large and the oxidation state is +1 or +2. The magnetic and electronic properties of Mn in full and half Heusler compounds are strongly dependent on the structure and sublattice, a fact that can be exploited to design new materials.

These compounds are found to crystallize in the hexagonal perovskite structure (space group \textit{P6$_{3}$/mmc}), as previously reported. The $ρ(T)$, $χ(T)$ and C($T$) data confirm the bulk ferromagnetic ordering of itinerant Cr moments in LaCrGe$_{3}$ and CeCrGe$_{3}$ with $T_{C}$ = 90 K and 70 K respectively. In addition a weak anomaly is also observed near 3 K in the C($T$) data of CeCrGe$_{3}$. The T dependences of $ρ$ and finite values of Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ obtained from the specific heat measurements confirm that both the compounds are of metallic character. Further, the $T$ dependence of $ρ$ of CeCrGe$_{3}$ reflects a Kondo lattice behavior. An enhanced $γ$ of 130 mJ/mol\,K$^{2}$ together with the Kondo lattice behavior inferred from the $ρ(T)$ establish CeCrGe$_{3}$ as a moderate heavy fermion compound with a quasi-particle mass renormalization factor of $\sim$ 45.

Here, we focus on the members of the $A$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ family whose sample composition, quality and single crystal growth are better controllable compared to the other systems. Using first principles band structure calculations we focus on understanding the relationship between the crystal structure, charge doping and magnetism in $A$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ systems. We will elaborate on the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural distortion along with the associated magnetic order and anisotropy, influence of doping on the $A$ site as well as on the Fe site, and the changes in the electronic structure as a function of pressure. Experimentally, we investigate the substitution of Fe in SrFe$_{2-x}TM_{x}$As$_{2}$ by other 3$d$ transition metals, $TM$ = Mn, Co, Ni. In contrast to a partial substitution of Fe by Co or Ni (electron doping) a corresponding Mn partial substitution does not lead to the supression of the antiferromagnetic order or the appearance of superconductivity. Most calculated properties agree well with the measured properties, but several of them are sensitive to the As $z$ position. For a microscopic understanding of the electronic structure of this new family of superconductors this structural feature related to the Fe-As interplay is crucial, but its correct ab initio treatment still remains an open question.

Abstract:
The ground state properties of CeCoPO, a homologue of the new high temperature superconductors RFePnO1-xFx, were studied by means of susceptibility, specific heat, and resistivity measurements on polycrystals. The observation of a well defined Curie-Weiss behavior above 230K with mu_eff=2.9mu_B and a ferromagnetic ordering below T_C=75K is similar to what was observed in LaCoPO and points to mag…

The observation of a well defined Curie-Weiss behavior above 230K with mu_eff=2.9mu_B and a ferromagnetic ordering below T_C=75K is similar to what was observed in LaCoPO and points to magnetism of the Co-3d electrons. However, the Ce-ions are on the border to magnetism with a Kondo scale of T_K~40K and show an enhanced Sommerfeld-coefficient of γ~200mJ/molK^2.

Abstract:
The structural parameters of $ε$-FeGe have been determined at ambient conditions using single crystal refinement. Powder diffraction have been carried out to determine structural properties and compressibility for pressures up to 30 GPa and temperatures as low as 82 K. The discontinuous change in the pressure dependence of the shortest Fe-Ge interatomic distance might be interpreted as a symmetr…

The discontinuous change in the pressure dependence of the shortest Fe-Ge interatomic distance might be interpreted as a symmetry-conserving transition and seems to be related to a magnetic phase boundary line.

Abstract:
The spin polarization of ferromagnetic alkali-metal iron antimonides KFe4Sb12 and NaFe4Sb12 is studied by point-contact Andreev reflection using superconducting Nb and Pb tips. From these measurements an intrinsic transport spin polarization Pt of 67% and 60% for the K and Na compound, respectively, is inferred which establishes these materials as a new class of highly spin polarized ferromagnet…

The spin polarization of ferromagnetic alkali-metal iron antimonides KFe4Sb12 and NaFe4Sb12 is studied by point-contact Andreev reflection using superconducting Nb and Pb tips. From these measurements an intrinsic transport spin polarization Pt of 67% and 60% for the K and Na compound, respectively, is inferred which establishes these materials as a new class of highly spin polarized ferromagnets. The results are in accord with band structure calculations within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) that predict nearly 100% spin polarization in the density of states. We discuss the impact of calculated Fermi velocities and spin fluctuations on Pt.
