Itinerant ferromagnetism in dilute Fermi gases is predicted to emerge at values of the gas parameter where second-order perturbation theory is not accurate enough to properly describe the system. We have revisited perturbation theory for SU(N) fermions and derived its generalization up to third order both in terms of the gas parameter and the polarization. Our results agree satisfactorily with quantum Monte Carlo results for hard-sphere and soft-sphere potentials for $S = 1/2$. Although the nature of the phase transition depends on the interaction potential, we find that for a hard-sphere potential a phase transition is guaranteed to occur. While for $S= 1/2$ we observe a quasi-continuous transition, for spins $3/2$ and $5/2$, a first-order phase transition is found. For larger spins, a double transition (combination of continuous and discontinuous) occurs. The critical density reduces drastically when the spin increases, making the phase transition more accessible to experiments with ultracold dilute Fermi gases. Estimations for Fermi gases of Yb and Sr with spin $5/2$ and $9/2$, respectively, are reported.

We present exact analytic results for the energy of a SU(N) repulsive Fermi gas as a function of the spin-channel occupation at second order in the gas parameter. This is an extension of an old result that now incorporates the degree of polarization of the system. Therefore, the magnetic properties of the gas can be obtained, free from numerical uncertainties. For spin 1/2 we find that second-order corrections change the itinerant ferromagnetic transition from continuous to first-order. Instead, for spin larger than 1/2 the phase transition is always of first-order type. The transition critical density reduces when the spin increases, making the phase transition more accessible to experiments with ultracold dilute Fermi gases. Estimations for Fermi gases of Yb and Sr with spin 5/2 and 9/2, respectively, are reported.

We present a method based on the Path Integral Monte Carlo formalism for the calculation of ground-state time correlation functions in quantum systems. The key point of the method is the consideration of time as a complex variable whose phase $δ$ acts as an adjustable parameter. By using high-order approximations for the quantum propagator, it is possible to obtain Monte Carlo data all the way from purely imaginary time to $δ$ values near the limit of real time. As a consequence, it is possible to infer accurately the spectral functions using simple inversion algorithms. We test this approach in the calculation of the dynamic structure function $S(q,ω)$ of two one-dimensional model systems, harmonic and quartic oscillators, for which $S(q,ω)$ can be exactly calculated. We notice a clear improvement in the calculation of the dynamic response with respect to the common approach based on the inverse Laplace transform of the imaginary-time correlation function.

Influence of the backflow correlations on the ground state energy of the systems is explored. The equilibrium densities for D$\downarrow_2$ and D$\downarrow_3$ liquids are obtained and compared with ones obtained in previous approximate prediction. The density and the pressure at which the gas-liquid phase transition occurs at $T$=0 is obtained for D$\downarrow_1$.

In a recent study we have reported a new type of trial wave function symmetric under the exchange of particles and which is able to describe a supersolid phase. In this work, we use the diffusion Monte Carlo method and this model wave function to study the properties of solid 4He in two- and quasi two-dimensional geometries. In the purely two-dimensional case, we obtain results for the total ground-state energy and freezing and melting densities which are in good agreement with previous exact Monte Carlo calculations performed with a slightly different interatomic potential model. We calculate the value of the zero-temperature superfluid fraction ρ_{s} / ρof 2D solid 4He and find that it is negligible in all the considered cases, similarly to what is obtained in the perfect (free of defects) three-dimensional crystal using the same computational approach. Interestingly, by allowing the atoms to move locally in the perpendicular direction to the plane where they are confined to zero-point oscillations (quasi two-dimensional crystal) we observe the emergence of a finite superfluid density that coexists with the periodicity of the system.

The feasibility of path integral Monte Carlo ground state calculations with very few beads using a high-order short-time Green's function expansion is discussed. An explicit expression of the evolution operator which provides dramatic enhancements in the quality of ground-state wave-functions is examined. The efficiency of the method makes possible to remove the trial wave function and thus obtain completely model-independent results still with a very small number of beads. If a single iteration of the method is used to improve a given model wave function, the result is invariably a shadow-type wave function, whose precise content is provided by the high-order algorithm employed.

High order actions proposed by Chin have been used for the first time in path integral Monte Carlo simulations. Contrarily to the Takahashi-Imada action, which is accurate to fourth order only for the trace, the Chin action is fully fourth order, with the additional advantage that the leading fourth and sixth order error coefficients are finely tunable. By optimizing two free parameters entering in the new action we show that the time step error dependence achieved is best fitted with a sixth order law. The computational effort per bead is increased but the total number of beads is greatly reduced, and the efficiency improvement with respect to the primitive approximation is approximately a factor of ten. The Chin action is tested in a one-dimensional harmonic oscillator, a H$_2$ drop, and bulk liquid $^4$He. In all cases a sixth-order law is obtained with values of the number of beads that compare well with the pair action approximation in the stringent test of superfluid $^4$He.

Going down to as low densities as na^2 ~ 10^{-100} permits us for the first time to obtain agreement on beyond mean-field level between predictions of perturbative methods and direct many-body numerical simulation, thus providing an answer to the fundamental question of the equation of state of a two-dimensional dilute Bose gas in the universal regime (i.e. entirely described by the gas parameter na^2). We also show that the measure of the frequency of a breathing collective oscillation in a trap at very low densities can be used to test the universal equation of state of a two-dimensional Bose gas.

Results for the one-body density matrix show the existence of off-diagonal long-range order with a very small condensate fraction $\sim 10^{-4}$. The superfluid density of the commensurate system is below our resolution threshold, $ρ_s/ρ< 10^{-5}$. The calculation is exact within statistical errors since we sample the exact ground state wave function, whose analytical expression is known. The numerical results are in good agreement with known asymptotic expansions valid for Luttinger liquids. We find that the difference between the absolute value of the bosonic and fermionic density matrices becomes marginally small as the density increases. In this same regime, the corresponding momentum distributions merge into a common profile that is independent of the statistics. Non-analytical contributions to the one--body density matrix are also discussed and found to be less relevant with increasing density.

The analysis of the static structure factor and the pair distribution function indicates that a solid-like and a gas-like phases exist at high and low densities, respectively. The one-body density matrix decays following a power-law at large distances and produces a divergence in the low density momentum distribution at k=0 which can be identified as a quasi-condensate.

Extending a previous calculation by Vallés and Schmidt, which used the Green's function Monte Carlo method, we study the surface of liquid $^4$He within a slab geometry using a larger number of particles in the slab and an updated interatomic potential. The surface tension is accurately estimated from the energy of slabs of increasing surface density and its value is close to one of the two existing experimental values. Results for the density profiles allow for the calculation of the surface width which shows an overall agreement with recent experimental data. We consider a homogeneous 1D Bose gas with contact interactions and large attractive coupling constant. This system can be realized in tight waveguides by exploiting a confinement induced resonance of the effective 1D scattering amplitude. By using a variational {\it ansatz} for the many-body wavefunction, we show that for small densities the gas-like state is stable and the corresponding equation of state is well described by a gas of hard rods. By calculating the compressibility of the system, we provide an estimate of the critical density at which the gas-like state becomes unstable against cluster formation. Within the hard-rod model we calculate the one-body density matrix and the static structure factor of the gas. The results show that in this regime the system is more strongly correlated than a Tonks-Girardeau gas. Improvements beyond the primitive approximation in the path integral Monte Carlo method are explored both in a model problem and in real systems. Two different strategies are studied: the Richardson extrapolation on top of the path integral Monte Carlo data and the Takahashi-Imada action. The Richardson extrapolation, mainly combined with the primitive action, always reduces the number-of-beads dependence, helps in determining the approach to the dominant power law behavior, and all without additional computational cost. The Takahashi-Imada action has been tested in two hard-core interacting quantum liquids at low temperature. The results obtained show that the fourth-order behavior near the asymptote is conserved, and that the use of this improved action reduces the computing time with respect to the primitive approximation.

A final-state-effects formalism suitable to analyze the high-momentum response of Fermi liquids is presented and used to study the dynamic structure function of liquid $^3$He. The theory, developed as a natural extension of the Gersch-Rodriguez formalism, incorporates the Fermi statistics explicitely through a new additive term which depends on the semi-diagonal two-body density matrix. The use of a realistic momentum distribution, calculated using the diffusion Monte Carlo method, and the inclusion of this additive correction allows for a good agreement with available deep-inelastic neutron scattering data.

The equation of state of H2 adsorbed in the interstitial channels of a carbon nanotube bundle has been calculated using the diffusion Monte Carlo method. The possibility of a lattice dilation, induced by H2 adsorption, has been analyzed by modeling the cohesion energy of the bundle. The influence of factors like the interatomic potentials, the nanotube radius and the geometry of the channel on the bundle swelling is systematically analyzed. The most critical input is proved to be the C-H2 potential. Using the same model than in planar graphite, which is expected to be also accurate in nanotubes, the dilation is observed to be smaller than in previous estimations or even inexistent. H2 is highly unidimensional near the equilibrium density, the radial degree of freedom appearing progressively at higher densities.

The implementation and reliability of a quadratic diffusion Monte Carlo method for the study of ground-state properties of atoms are discussed. We show in the simple yet non-trivial calculation of the binding energy of the Li atom that the method presented is effectively second-order in the time step. The fulfilment of the expected quadratic behavior relies on some basic requirements of the trial wave function used for importance sampling, in the context of the fixed-node approximation. Expectation values of radial operators are calculated by means of a pure estimation based on the forward walking methodology. It is shown that accurate results without extrapolation errors can be obtained with a pure algorithm that can be easily implemented in any previous diffusion Monte Carlo program.

The influence of the interatomic potential in one-dimensional systems is also studied by comparing the properties of D$_2$ and $^4$He which have nearly the same mass but a sizeably different potential. The results provide a significant improvement with respect to the Feynman approximation $ω_F(q)= q^2(2mS(q))^{-1}$. A further, stronger bound, requiring the additional knowledge of the current correlation function is also investigated. New results for the current correlation function are presented.

By means of a Quadratic Diffusion Monte Carlo method we have performed a comparative analysis between the Aziz potential and a revised version of it. The results demonstrate that the new potential produces a better description of the equation of state for liquid $^4$He. In spite of the improvement in the description of derivative magnitudes of the energy, as the pressure or the compressibility, the energy per particle which comes from this new potential is lower than the experimental one. The inclusion of three-body interactions, which give a repulsive contribution to the potential energy, makes it feasible that the calculated energy comes close to the experimental result.
